Our Son's Samuel and Joseph’s Story For the past 5 years, I have watched my boys develop and grow at Jerry Hansman's Dojo. Karate has provided a framework of leadership, discipline and most importantly responsibility. On the road to their black belts my children have enjoyed going to karate classes. They enjoy the ability to go all year , not just during a season like other sports. Moreover their classes are staggered at different times every day so that we could always find days to fit our ever-changing schedules. Karate has helped my children outside of the dojo in many ways. Their selfconfidence has greatly improved over the years as they regularly perform in front of a large group during class, at tournaments and at belt ceremonies. This has helped them in school by dramatically decreasing performance
anxiety with presentations. Likewise, taking standardized tests like ISTEP are seen merely as another challenge much like learning a new kata or starting a new weapon. It is encouraging that my kids have demonstrated the knowledge and skills to protect themselves should those situations ever occur. Learning karate has also helped my children realize more of their potential, developing a sense of accomplishment along the way. It improved their coordination and balance. It taught them to appreciate constructive criticism and that hard work pays off. They have also learned to work with and learn from others. It has instilling in them a sense of responsibility for their actions and an understanding that actions have consequences, karate has laid a foundation for lifelong development.

Education
Spotlight In the Fall of 1974, Learning Time Preschool opened its first school, housed in the classrooms of a small local church. It was the goal of Learning Time to provide high quality educational programs for young children. The school began offering classes for three and four year old children who desired a part-time learning experience. Soon the program was expanded to include two year olds as well an extended day option. As family needs changed, many requested Learning Time to offer a full day program, with expanded hours. In 1988, my husband and I designed our first free-standing building near 91st and Meridian, and opened Learning Time North. The school was designed to provide classroom sizes that exceeded the minimum state licensing requirements, a dining room, and a large muscle room. Rooms were designed to provide a warm, home-like environment, rather than a typical school setting. Classrooms were equipped to offer Language Arts, Creative Arts , as well as Large Motor
Activities. Children had a home room, but were able to move throughout the day to the various classrooms to experience the specific activities offered in each area. Within the next several years, two additional locations opened, Learning Time West and Learning Time Geist. The schools now offer classes for Infants thru Five Year Olds, as well as both Before and After School care Today, exciting early childhood experiences remain the focus of our educational program. I continue to personally write the daily lesson plans for each classroom age group, and continue to search for new and exciting curriculum ideas. This fall, we are expanding our Creative Art experiences by opening our Art Studio, focusing on creative art activities. We are also initiating a new reading program, introducing a recently revised Letter People Program. Each week the children will look forward to meeting a new Letter Person who will focus on both letter and sound recognition. We are also introducing a new STEM lab, which will offer hands on science experiences for young children. We’re excited to present these new programs as we continue to maintain our reputation of offering a high quality educational program for young children. Jan Bisesi Ed.D.

Isaac’s Autism Journey
By Krista Schultz (Isaac's Mother) Isaac was 4 when he started attending The Applied Behavior Center for Autism. It was somewhat hard sending our little guy off for 8 hours a day, but from day 1, everyone at ABC was so wonderful in making us feel like Isaac was safe and secure and being well cared for. The changes in Isaac these last 2 years have been phenomenal. His speech and communication have increased dramatically. I can ask him questions about his day and he can answer me. When he talks about his friends at the center, he is referring to clients and therapists both! When we go in public places now, he says hi to people and asks their names. He asks people to play with him and works very hard to interact with those around him. These are things Isaac always wanted to do, but didn't have the skills to do prior to ABC. To see him doing it now and bringing him such pleasure is heartwarming to us. One of Isaac's biggest and hardest struggles has always been eating. Food was incredibly stressful to him and everyday eating was a huge battle. At the age of 5, he was only eating baby foods and other purees such as pudding, yogurt and applesauce. In all honesty, we thought Isaac may never eat solid food. When they started the food program at ABC, they were giving us daily feedback about his progress. It was unbelievable that this kid was putting these foods to his mouth and even taking bites of them. The day the Team Leader and Behavior Analyst came to our home to introduce the program here, Isaac sat down at our table and I watched him take bites and eat a banana. I can't even put into words how this felt. We have continued to build on the program and I can proudly say that our guy no longer eats baby food.
He eats real food at every meal and we even go to restaurants now and he will eat! This would never have happened a year ago. I won't say we don't ever struggle with eating, but to look at where we were 12 months ago and where we are now, in our eyes is nothing short of a miracle. Another big step we are now taking is starting kindergarten. Isaac attended preschool 3 mornings a week last school session at our church and his therapist attended with him. He did extremely well. The other kids were very accepting of him and included him and he participated in all activities that they did. To see him in his cap and gown on graduation day in the sanctuary clapping his hands and singing the songs with the other kids---we couldn't be any more proud! These things and so many others have been made possible for our Isaac by the hard work and dedication of the ABC staff. It's hard to put into words what they have brought to our lives. Every day, they make a difference. It is so obvious how much these folks care about our kids and I hope they know how important they are to us and all those they are helping. When Isaac does something he is proud of, he can't wait to share it with his therapists. They aren't just staff members to us, they are family. They came into our lives at a time when we so needed them and we look so forward to seeing what the future holds for our Isaac. We are so grateful and so proud to be a part of the ABC family.

You have to Forgive to Teach Forgiveness? Kids that come into my office typically are suffering from a sense of depression or sadness because someone has betrayed them in their life. Oftentimes it involves a parent or family member who has neglected, hurt or abandoned the child. Parents many times feel helpless to assist the child to develop strong coping skills to deal with these devastating feelings. In these type of situations, the parent can be extremely helpful in assisting the child in developing resilience. I encourage the parent to help their child to work through his/her feelings. We all know that most children are extremely resilient and yet they can be prone to guilt when they have been neglected or abandoned by a family member. The first course of action is to help the child identify how they are feeling. Most often times the child will be feeling anger, sadness, loss, fear or loneliness. Normalizing these feelings helps to validate the child's experience and helps them to decide how they should proceed with life. After they have processed their feelings and most importantly their fears, I ask parents to encourage children to decide if they are willing to forgive the person who has wronged or harm them. I must admit that this can be difficult for any adult who is supporting their child because the parent may also feel residual anger. I have met many a parent who confidentially shares that they are angry with the uncle who sexually abused the child, or the parent who abandoned the family. They describe that resentment as being locked deep inside the parent’s heart and admit that they are not sure whether they are ready to forgive the offender of pain. So the parent must work through his/her feelings to be the teacher for his/her child. This may require that the parent get some therapy to process the anger they feel.
Forgiveness is truly one of the greatest gifts a parent can teach a child. And the best way to teach forgiveness is to live forgiveness. Children need to see the parent as able to forgive others for their indiscretions. Carol Juergensen Sheets I recently did some research on the most helpful ways to assist children in the process of forgiveness and I found kids learn forgiveness when they watched their parents move beyond their anger. We all know that anger and resentment works against you if it is not processed and resolved. Now I'm a believer that anger has a lot of positive qualities however it should never go unprocessed. Forgiveness occurs when anger has been appropriately dealt with and resolved. So as a parent, are there things in your life that have occurred in which you have been unable to apply the process of forgiveness? Has your child witnessed your inability to let go of anger? Are there people in your life in which you have seething resentment towards because they were unavailable to you or because they hurt you in your past? Perhaps the perpetrator hurt you as well as your child when they betrayed your family. Your child is likely very perceptive and recognizes that you've been hurt too. So as you help your child work through the issues, make sure you have done your work too. It’s the best gift you can give to let go of the anger and to talk about forgiving the person, allowing yourself and your child to move on in your lives. When you do this you teach your children the valuable lesson of forgiveness!
