Managing Dental Trauma What to do if your child falls and injures their teeth
The first thing to do after the injury is to make sure that your child has not sustained any type of head injury or loss of consciousness. If you suspect this is the case or you are not sure, go immediately to the closest hospital to have your child evaluated. Next, apply pressure with a wet cloth and attempt to determine the extent of the dental injury. If your child has knocked out their tooth try to find the tooth. Do not attempt to wash off the tooth at this time. A permanent tooth may sometimes be re-implanted depending upon the extent of the injury to the mouth and most importantly the time that has elapsed. Put the tooth into milk (whole milk is preferred, but skim, 1% or 2 % is acceptable) and take your child to the dentist or emergency room. If you are not sure if is a permanent or a baby tooth, go ahead and put it in milk until it can be determined by the dentist. If your child has broken or displaced their tooth, follow the same steps as with a tooth that has been knocked out, and confirm there has been no other head injury. Contact your dentist who can determine if you need to be seen right away or wait until the next day depending upon the extent of the injury. It is always best to err on the side of caution. This will put your mind at ease and help you make an informed decision. Please say “I found it in the IndyKids’Directory! Thanks!

Parenting—Doing Less It is difficult to raise a family in today’s society. There is so much emphasis on providing the right opportunities and affording the right things. It can be mind-boggling to know when you might be doing too much for your child. You are doing too much if: • You can’t afford the activities your child is involved in. • You are cutting into your workday or down time to transport your child more than 25% of the time. • If the only life you have is arranging your child’s activities. • If your child sets up an agenda without asking you—that translates into they don’t ask if they can go and they don’t ask if it will fit into your plans. Entitlement syndrome by my definition, is when minors expect their parents to provide a lifestyle that totally centers around them. When children receive too much money, time or attention, three natural processes occur: • Children become self-centered and begin to expect the world to revolve around them. • They develop a skewed sense of reality that is not reflective of the real world. • They are most likely doing too much and do not have enough down time for the “kid essentials” like studying, cleaning their room, or interacting with family, especially their parents. Children with entitlement syndrome either develop narcissistic tendencies— “everything revolves around me”—or they become discouraged because secretly they feel inferior unless everything is provided to them. They, like so many adults, crave a lifestyle that is not realistic. At 15, they are planning spring breaks to other states or in some cases other countries. They are inundated with mailers soliciting them as potential credit card holders. They experience adult-like situations at an age when
developmentally they don’t have the internal mechanisms to say no and they don’t know how to handle situations appropriately. A growing trend that is occurring is parents who allow their children’s boyfriends Carol Juergensen Sheets or girlfriends to spend the night at their home. The rationale is that they won’t be sleeping in the same room. Whether they sleep together or not, it emphasizes that kids should be together that much. That is too much closeness. Teens need separation from their love interests. That helps them to develop individuality. Parents also allow co-ed slumber parties, which puts children in a situation where they are expected to have good impulse control. If, as a parent, you see yourself falling into the trap, there are several techniques that can rein the child back into a slower, gentler lifestyle: • Stop doing so much! Yes, they will be mad and yes, they will try to make you feel guilty. You have the right to say no and use it as a complete sentence (remember that column?) • Start re-prioritizing their needs and saying things like, “I can’t afford to give you the charge card” or “I have discontinued the cellular phones because it didn’t fit into our budget” or “Mom’s too tired to pick you up.” • It’s okay to emphasize that you have had a wake-up call and that things are going to be different. Staying at home, being with the family, watching a video or eating a regular meal together builds character. Don’t be afraid to refocus your efforts. Know that you will be in for a battle because you set up this decadent lifestyle when you didn’t know better. Sometimes doing less is more. It builds character. Isn’t that really your job as a parent?

Each of our centers offers a unique blend of amenities including custom-crafted indoor gyms and individual therapy rooms. In addition to Applied Behavior Analysis Therapy and Behavior Consulting we offer the following services to ALL children with Special Needs: Diagnostic Testing, Indoor Swim Lessons, and Speech Therapy. The best part is we are enrolling now at select locations! ABA Therapy All seven of our locations treat patients on a one-onone basis with a treatment known as applied behavior analysis. Behavior analysis is a scientific approach to understanding how the environment influences behavior. The term “behavior” refers to all types of performance, not only inappropriate or undesirable actions. Speech, language, social, learning, daily living, leisure and vocational skills all are behaviors. ABA focuses on using proven procedures to increase desired behaviors and decrease unwanted behaviors. These techniques can be used in structured settings (e.g., classrooms and therapy clinics) and more natural settings (e.g., playgrounds and restaurants). ABA has been used successfully with people of all ages, with and without disabilities, in a variety of settings to promote independence, quality of life and happiness. Once a child receives the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), it’s important to get him or her into a therapy program, as ABA therapy has the best track record of scientifically demonstrating effective treatments. Through individualized plans for each child and tracking daily progress at The Applied Behavior Center, we see the quality of life improve not only for the child but for the whole family.
Diagnostic Testing At The Applied Behavior Center, we provide specialists who offer diagnostic services for any suspected condition whether it be mental health, special needs or other circumstances. Unlike many of our competitors, our current wait time is less than two weeks and you receive written assessment results within 7-10 days of your appointment! Indoor Swim Lessons Open to all disabilities, ABC is thrilled to offer special needs swim lessons for ages 3 and up of all abilities through our Carmel Facility. Private and semi-private lessons are done in our indoor, heated, therapeutic pool and taught by our experienced staff with years of aquatic training. Did you know? The CDC has reported “Drowning is the leading cause of death for individuals with Autism.” Speech Therapy At ABC, we use Verbal Behavior style ABA which promotes the development of language with children on a functional level. We are now enrolling with minimal wait time! We Provide Full Insurance Management Services *Free of Charge* At ABC, we understand that there are several stresses and pressures that come with searching for the right services for your child. Sorting through insurance struggles should not be another stressor added to that list. Because of this, our trained team of experts handles all insurance processing on behalf of our clients. This is a service that we offer to all families completely free of charge.
