i-Read is Coming! Is Your 3rd Grader Ready? At j&R Tutoring a few of our third graders have already shared with us that they fear the upcoming i-Read exam. Whenever I hear that, it makes me very sad. I wonder what children are hearing at school that would instill fear months before an event? Sadly, the children’s test results reflect on the teacher. Is that fair? I’m not so sure that it is. The never-ending tide of developmental standards has literally strangled the education process. Standards used to be a goal for which a student strived. Now it is a barometer that determines if the teacher is doing the job. How did we get so turned around? Not all third graders reach the same developmental level at the same time,

or more importantly, specifically in March! There are so many variables that determine a young child’s development!! One test – in my humble opinion – cannot and should not be the final word! Personally, I do not think this is fair to either the student or the teacher. At j&R we are trying to help. Beginning in January, we will offer a special course designed to prepare students for iRead. We will cover subject matter, but we also will address how to take a standardized test. I know this may sound a little silly, but this may be the first “real” test a student takes. They need to be comfortable not only with the subject matter, but also with the test taking process.

Spotlight MY CHILD IS STRUGGLING WITH READING... COULD IT BE RELATED TO HIS SPEECH DIFFICULTIES? By Marsha Boyer, M.A., CCC-SLP

Yes. When beginning to read, children first need to understand the sounds the letters make. In fact, many studies have shown that children who have difficulty saying speech sounds can later have difficulty reading. Multiple studies have concluded that as a group, preschoolers with speech sound disorders are at increased risk for later reading disability, or developmental dyslexia (Bird, Bishop, & Freeman, 1995; Larrivee & Catts, 1999; Lewis & Freebairn, 1992). Similarly, children with reading disability have higher rates of previous speech sound disorders (Pennington & Lefly, 2001; Scarborough, 1990). How do I know the difference between typical speech errors and speech difficulty that my child needs help with? There are many factors that can make your child’s speech development unique. A few examples include: Some children simply develop speech sounds in an atypical pattern, some have lost teeth a little earlier than most, and some have mouth muscle coordination difficulties. The following guideline for speech sound development is a starting point for checking how your child is doing: • AGE 1 ½ -3 children typically develop the sounds P,M,H,W, B and N. The B sound can be as late as age 4. • AGE 2-4 children typically develop the sounds K, G and D, T and NG. The T and NG sounds can be as late as age 6. • AGE 2 ½-4 children typically develop the sounds F and Y. • AGE 3-8 children typically develop the sounds R, L and S. This is a long range because these can be some of the most challenging sounds to say. • AGE 3 ½-7 children typically develop the sounds “sh”, “ch”and Z. Z can be as late as age 8. • AGE 4-8 children typically develop the sounds “j” as in “jump” and V. • AGE 4 ½-7 children typically develop “th” without the voice on , as in “think”. • AGE 5-8 children typically develop “th” with the voice on, as in “this”. • AGE 6-8 ½ children typically develop the sound ZH as in “treasure”. The above chart is a general guideline. Many factors can play a part in delayed speech development as well as difficulty reading. If your child is not able to say sounds in his or her age range, then a consult with a Speech-Language Pathologist is recommended. Marsha Boyer is a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist located in Greenwood. She owns Speech Connections, a private practice where she treats children of all ages and difficulties.

You Have Great Influence Kids are so impressionable but parents DO have great influence on their children. Researcher show that children hear many more negative comments then positive comments in their upbringing. Didn’t you chronically hear “don’t do that,” “watch out, “and “be careful.“ Understandably, this is about parents wanting to protect their children but it can create a sense of anxiety and insecurity. You want them to think before they act and as a result you may be instilling anxiety or fear in them without intending to do so. We know that children live in a society where they think they should have more control over what they do in their lives. Parenting is that delicate balance between working with your children to create safety and stabilization and allowing them some independence to find out for themselves. This builds confidence! I always encourage parents to give children choices so that they get to make some decisions within healthy boundaries. When you give them choices, you are telling them that you trust their decision-making and will allow them to experience the consequences of their actions. The process of brainstorming can also help them come up with possibilities for their own decision-making in their life. Because you are part of the process you can help to steer and guide them appropriately. Let’s look at a couple of situations where a child may want to make his/her own decisions. You may want to involve your younger children in what they wear to preschool or kindergarten. When you lay out three outfits for them and tell them to pick the best one for the weather you are teaching them to make decisions based on the temperature of the day. When you are helping children in peer related

situations, it may mean telling them that they can invite two people over to play and they need to decide which two people play the best together. Again, you’re inferring they should choose peers who do a good job of interacting together.

Carol Juergensen Sheets

As children get older, it can be more difficult because they want to make life decisions that conflict with your own values. In my practice, I am seeing teens who want to have coed sleepovers. And because so many families are allowing their children to do so, it can put extra pressure on you to say no. So, what can you do in the situation, to show the child that you’re giving them a choice? That may look like telling your child, “I will not be comfortable with us hosting coed sleepovers but I will assist you in setting up an event with 6 of your best friends and will even transport you all to and from the movie. This becomes an opportunity for you to allow your preteens or teens to explore other options All relationships are about compromise and negotiation. So, stand firm with supporting them in being social but don’t compromise your values despite the inherent power struggle that will ensue. Give your child some options, and then disengage from the verbal controversy and presuppose that they will pick the right choice. If they refuse to pick a better choice, then, that is on them. Power struggling is inherent in parenting but minimizing that to the best of your ability and still honoring your own values is essential in good healthy parenting. Look for chances to assist children in making good decisions. But honor your very important values because that is at the core of smart parenting!

Conner's Story I initially started looking for a martial arts program five years ago for my son Conner, who has always been small and shy for his age. I looked at several different programs around the area, and ultimately chose Jerry Hansman Karate for several reasons: Jerry Hansman’s Karate offered more classes per week than any other school in the area, so it fit better into our already busy schedule. As a former serviceman and police officer, Sensei Hansman can also teach students the physical and mental aspects of practical self-defense. Since Jerry and his staff have trained in Okinawa, I know we are getting the real thing. Eventually, both my daughter Kaitlyn and I also signed up for classes. What 10

we got was much more than just karate! We train as a family and the environment in the dojo creates another opportunity to connect with my children. Even though I have coached my kids in other sports, none of them have helped us bond the way karate has! The lessons Conner and Kaitlyn have learned in the dojo have helped them become better students and citizens as a whole. My son also found his confidence at Jerry Hansman’s Karate. Our once shy kid, who always avoided “the pile” in other sports, now jumps right in, whether it’s football, basketball, or anything else that requires contact. He has learned how to incorporate the fundamentals of karate into every day activities. Jerry Hansman’s Karate is a great place for kids and adults!

What are mands and why do we need to teach them? As a parent, has your little bundle of joy ever screamed at the top of their lungs? Have you ever rushed around trying to give them different things, but had real no idea what they really wanted? Have you ever given your kid your phone because the second that you took it away to look up the next ingredient for dinner, your kid started screaming in the middle of the store? Have you ever just given your kid things to keep them happy instead of making them ask for them first? TEACH MANDS! Mands are just requests. It really is that simple. You request to leave uncomfortable situations, you request to have more time with something you are enjoying, you request your favorite type of coffee when you go to the coffee shop, you can request specific information, and so on. You do these things without any thought, but some of our kids have not made the connection that if they ask for things appropriately, then they can get access to them. Many kids throw tantrums instead of asking for more time to enjoy those activities, and many parents give back those items instead of using that moment to teach an appropriate response. Think about it…how frustrating would it be if you know what you want but can’t tell anyone? So, what do we do about it? TEACH MANDS! This is an example of how ABA can help with teaching important skills. It takes a lot of time and consistency, but teaching kids how to request things opens up a whole new world for them. Many behavioral episodes decrease when there is an appropriate mand that is taught in place of those behaviors. Kids on the autism spectrum often have not made the connection that simple words can get them what they desire. It is up to us to teach them those words. It’s important to note that mand training should be done

across all environments (home, school, community, etc.). Mand training should also be done with all caregivers (mom, dad, grandparents, teachers, etc) and expectations should be consistent for the child. At the Applied Behavior Center for Autism, many times the first part of any child’s program is teaching those basic communication requests. When you come in for your initial interview, we can go over that programming and what it would look like. We can work with you to discuss certain things that your child needs help with to develop language. We can teach communication with American Sign Language, vocalizations, or even augmentative communication devices (i.e. using a tablet). It is our job as program coordinators to help program certain targets into your child’s treatment plan so that they learn those skills. The benefits of Mand Training for young children and their families can be life-changing. Once a child learns “I talk, I get,” it is likely their ability to communicate will increase. Communication will start to serve a function for the child. Jen DeRocher, M.A., BCBA Program Director
