Sounds in Play
There are plenty of opportunities during the day to present sounds that will help children engage in the process of learning language. Using a variety of sounds presented during play times are not only fun, but also add more meaning to the activity. Check out a few ideas to get you going during playtime and daily routines! Bubbles, baby dolls, and cars offer opportunity for repetitive sounds to be presented and imitated. With bubbles, you could use words such as “open”, “more”, and “my turn”. Hold the wand and pause…”Blowww!” following with “pop pop ” as you pop the bubbles. Baby dolls are great to incorporate sounds and words such as “ahh” as you hug the baby, “shhh” and “wake up!”. Cars are not only exciting but offer anticipation and opportunity for the child to use spontaneous sounds and words. This can be accomplished through modeling “1, 2, 3…GOOOO!!” Allow wait time after “3” to give the child the opportunity to say “GO!” and watch the car speed away! Daily routines are another great way to incorporate these sounds and words. During meal time, you could say “mmm mmmm” or “yummy” after a bite. Words and phrases such as “that’s hot!” and “more” are also great to include in a repetitive way. While brushing teeth, you could include “turn on the water, shhh, it’s cold, brrr!”, “Sqeeeeeze (the toothpaste)” and “all done!”. The most important thing to remember when incorporating sounds in play and routines is to have fun! Kelli Blankenship, Early Intervention Specialist St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf

Teach Your Child Healthy Coping Skills Kids are different no matter how similarly you raise them. Blame it on differences in genetics from generations before, or how they were incubated in the womb, kids just turn out differently and as result it requires a whole host of parenting skills to raise them up into emotionally mature adults. I was working the other day with a conscientious mother who had a very difficult daughter. For whatever reason, her daughter tends to be controlling and bossy and often times mean. I en-couraged this woman to take her daughter to a professional so that this child would have an op-portunity to share her feelings with a neutral person with absolutely no repercussions. Mom has begun to see some mild changes in her daughter's behavior, yet she continues to be puzzled and frustrated because she can't read her emotions. It would appear that the family lost their cat of 18 years and Susie did not act affected in the least. Obviously this lead mother to fear that her daughter did not own the “compassion gene” for a family member that has lived with Susie all her life. Mom who is prone to anxiety felt badly for the recently deceased cat but also for her daughter who was missing out on real compassion and loyalty. Later that night as she was walking up the stairs, she heard sniffles only to be surprised that her daughter was sobbing about the dead cat. As you can imagine mother comforted her child, and as she did she felt a sense of relief that her daughter indeed possessed a healthy dose of grief and sadness. Do you have at least one child who is hard to read? A child who has difficulty expressing emo-tions? A child who may appear to lack healthy emotions? Don't despair, this takes an extra dose of patience and consistency when dealing with your child. Spend extra time
sharing how other people feel to make sure that your child develops empathy and understanding. Combine this with a healthy dose of role modeling so that your child hears how you feel about situations both at home and in the Carol Juergensen Sheets neighborhood. That may require that you share when you're feeling hurt, angry, sad, or even scared. Parents show good role modeling skills when they share their own vulnerabilities and feelings and match them up with healthy problem-solving skills like the following: I'm angry with my boss because she wants me to stay late to finish this report. I guess I'll have to turn this around in my own head and realize that sometimes you have to work extra hard to get a difficult project done. Or I'm sad that Aunt Karen hasn't called me for a really long time and I'm tired of always being the one to call her. I suppose I'm going to have to be the bigger person and see myself as a connector and do the calling because if I don’t … I won't get to find out about Aunt Karen and your cousins. When children are exposed to healthy problem-solving it can further their ability to apply it in their lives. Parenting is difficult. What works at one developmental stage does not necessarily work in an-other. What works for one child does not necessarily work for his or her sibling. But there are some universal skills that you can teach and display to know that you're making a healthy in-vestment in increasing coping skills forever!

Kennedy's Story... Robert Brault once said, “Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize that they were big things.” Isn’t that what the basic ideology behind applied behavior analysis really is: little things, when put together add up to very big things? For nearly three years, the amazing team at ABC has been working on each small step in my daughter Kennedy’s progress -- her little things. Kennedy was diagnosed with autism shortly before her third birthday. After trial and error, we decided to give ABA a try in hopes that it would be what we were looking for to open doors that had once appeared to be locked tight. I still remember her enrollment meeting like it was yesterday; I was anxious and wondered how she would handle working eight hours a day five days a week. It was a big leap of faith to trust that she could do it and that these were the right people to help her. It didn’t take long, however, to start seeing really positive changes in my little girl. I can honestly say that was the best decision I ever made. When she first started, her language was limited to only labeling things and a few basic commands. She didn’t socialize with other kids and while she was loving, there was disconnect between her and the rest of the world- including me. Over the years she has blossomed into a smart, funny, and caring young lady, and I am so proud of her and how far she has come. Now Kennedy never stops talking! She talks about her favorite movies and which characters she likes. She tells me what she did at school and who her friends are. She tells me it makes her sad
when her brother pulls her hair and that spiders scare her. She loves to play with kids at the playground and often asks to play with me as well. These are things that to most parents wouldn’t seem like much at all, but to me, these little things are very big things! The next big thing is coming quicker than I can blink. This summer was truly bittersweet because Kennedy started kindergarten in August, which means that our time at ABC has come to an end. I am so excited to see what the next chapter holds for her, and I’m sure she will do amazing. However, I am a little saddened that she will no longer be working with her therapists or seeing her friends that she has grown to love at ABC. They have become family. There is nothing I could say to express how grateful I am to have these wonderful people in our lives. The world is waiting for my sweet girl, and they have made her ready. There was a time when I was terrified at the thought of enrolling her in school. It seemed like such an unobtainable goal. There isn’t an ounce of that fear left. I have complete confidence that she will love school and learn new things and make new friends quickly. She will thrive. So to ABC: thank you. You have made the world of difference for Kennedy. My hat is off to all of you, and every small thing that you do. It really does add up to big things. And to my sweet Kennedy: in the words of the great Dr. Suess, “You’re off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way!”
