Be Honest and Give Choices It can be tough to introduce the need for therapy when you are concerned about your child. It can feel like an overwhelming task because more than likely they are not talking to you, therefore, you can't imagine that they would share their feelings with a stranger. First and foremost, you must demonstrate honesty with your child. That may look like "I have been worried about your anger and wanted to work with a professional to get some help and she asked me to bring you to talk about the issue" or it may sound like "I have been worried about your grades and you don't seem motivated to do better....I know part of the problem is the way that I handle things so I called a counselor and he asked me to bring you." You always own the problem as it is what we call a "family systems" issue. it is imperative to be honest because ultimately you are asking your child to be honest with you. Don't be surprised if you meet with resistance because your child is already feeling different and probably does not want to be identified as what we call "the identified patient." Always give your child choices because this affords them some autonomy but also allows you to guide them in a direction that is helpful. Sometimes I have encouraged parents to tell their child that he will only have to meet with the therapist 3 times. This lets the child feel like he has some choice in the matter but also leaves the responsibility to the therapist to assess the child and decide how to relate with him and make him feel comfortable. Or I might tell the parents to explain to the child that during the initial evaluation all family members will be present but after the first
session the child can determine whether to see the therapist alone or with his parents. Again, it becomes the therapist who will ask the child if she can occasionally involve the parents. I find that kids are much more amenable to do what the therapist asks as opposed to the parents.

This week I had a 15-year-old adolescent in my office whose parents had tricked him to get him into my office. They had told him that they were going out for lunch and had to make a quick stop before they had lunch. That quick stop was me. You can imagine his dismay when they stopped in the parking lot and informed him that they were coming in to talk to me about his depression. As I walked them into the office I could feel the tension and sat down with them and assured him that I was sorry that his parents had not been honest with him. His parents sheepishly admitted that if they had asked him to meet with me he would have resisted. I quickly decided to give the teen back some power and after I got a brief history, I walked the parents out and insisted that I wanted to get to know their son because I knew that I would have to win him over without him feeling coerced. Initially he said there was no way he would meet with me, but then he described his severe depression and I decided to give him a choice. I assured him I could hook him up with a therapist who was a younger male and when given the choice....he picked me. Never underestimate the value of choice!

Expanding in Service to Others “I can never describe,” a parent once told me, “the feeling of utter helplessness that came over me when my child was diagnosed with autism. I didn’t know where to go. I didn’t know what to do. It was like finding out that all my concerns were real and then not having a clue what to do next. And the thing is, I needed more than answers. I needed to find people and places to support me. I needed to find a place where I belong.” As the oldest provider of ABA services for individuals with autism in the state of Indiana, the Applied Behavior Center for Autism has striven to provide such support to families. We’re proud to be opening a new location near downtown Indianapolis to support yet another community. Support and belonging are fundamental to ABC’s mission. ABC started in 1997 when our founder’s son was diagnosed with autism. At the time, 1 in 2500 children were diagnosed with autism and research on the effectiveness of ABA was only starting to be noticed. ABC was a leader in providing ABA services to individuals in Indiana. Since then, the diagnosis of autism has only grown, now at 1 in 59. Research demonstrating the effectiveness of ABA has also grown, leading to the passage of insurance mandate laws in all 50 states. Likewise, the need for family support for individuals with autism has continued to grow. ABC provides support in a variety of ways including through diagnostic testing. Autism can be diagnosed at a very young age, but some children are not diagnosed until much later in part because it can be difficult to find someone to complete the necessary testing. We offer comprehensive diagnostic testing to overcome this barrier. ABC provides support through swim lessons. Drowning is the number one cause of accidental death for young children with autism. We offer lifesaving swim lessons to individuals who have difficulty learning to swim through typical community programs. ABC provides support through high quality ABA services. Access to ABA is still a barrier in some parts of Indiana. ABC has opened centers throughout the state, including Richmond, Terre Haute, and surrounding Indianapolis areas. We are excited to add our Central West location, located near downtown Indy with easy access from the freeway, as yet another place for families to find support. ABC’s support happens in an environment where parents also feel they belong. Communication and collaboration are key from the moment a parent walks in the door to the moment we help transition individuals to greater independence. We accept a variety of funding sources, including Medicaid, and help individuals across the spectrum. We meet people where they are and help them find their way. That’s true for everyone we serve, both individuals with autism and their families. To this end, we are excited to offer Central West as a new place for people to fit.
