Our three children started learning karate in kindergarten and it was one of the best decisions we took. Jerry Hansman’s Okinawan Karate has been a very positive experience in our family and over the last four years we have seen incredible growth in all our children in terms of leadership, discipline and motor skills. Jerry is a wonderful role model and provides a safe and fun environment for learning. All the teachers at the Dojo are friendly and encourage learning. Our eldest is now a black belt and our twins are steadily progressing towards the same. They learn various kata and sparring. 2
Weapons training is probably one of the most enjoyable parts for them and the children learn to manipulate six different types through the year. Having a wide choice of class times also allows flexibility for our busy family of five. The In-School tournaments are a great way to allow the children to gain confidence and experience and the awards they win are proudly displayed in their rooms. We hope our children continue this karate journey for many years to come. We would recommend this to anyone who is interested in teaching their children or themselves a valuable life skill.

i-Read is Coming! Is Your 3rd Grader Ready? At j&R Tutoring a few of our third graders have already shared with us that they fear the upcoming i-Read exam. Whenever I hear that, it makes me very sad. I wonder what children are hearing at school that would instill fear months before an event? Sadly, the children’s test results reflect on the teacher. Is that fair? I’m not so sure that it is. The never-ending tide of developmental standards has literally strangled the education process. Standards used to be a goal for which a student strived. Now it is a barometer that determines if the teacher is doing the job. How did we get so turned around? Not all third graders reach the same developmental level at the same time,
or more importantly, specifically in March! There are so many variables that determine a young child’s development!! One test – in my humble opinion – cannot and should not be the final word! Personally, I do not think this is fair to either the student or the teacher. At j&R we are trying to help. Beginning in January, we will offer a special course designed to prepare students for iRead. We will cover subject matter, but we also will address how to take a standardized test. I know this may sound a little silly, but this may be the first “real” test a student takes. They need to be comfortable not only with the subject matter, but also with the test taking process.

Help Your Children to Build Positive Thoughts Creating a positive day requires positive, confident thoughts. As a parent, you have one of the most valuable tools in the world to share with your kids. Most parents don’t acknowledge the power they have in influencing the way their child perceives the world. You have a very special tool to teach your children that they are not a victim to life but, they can create the life they deserve. This means that you need to spend time cultivating this very important message that the way they view their life is dependent on their thoughts. In other words, if they organize their thoughts in a confident way they can affect the outcome of their day. When children feel inadequate, they oftentimes perceive themselves as inferior, and they don’t realize that if they create stronger thoughts, they can change how they interact with the world. You as their parent, can manifest how to do this by sharing with them how you create your world by cultivating your special thoughts. I know you may be thinking “I am not sure that I am utilizing this process to the best of my ability.” So now I’m going to encourage you as a parent to practice the methodology of strengthening your own empowering thoughts to create the life you deserve by practicing the method of learning how to turn your thoughts into more proactive ones. This means when you come upon a very tough situation, that you ask yourself how can I use my thinking to overcome this challenge. Let’s look at a specific situation. Perhaps you are facing a very busy day and you are questioning whether you can get everything done. Instead of telling yourself that you will never be able to achieve all the things that you want during this very hectic day, you say to yourself, “I am going to chunk this day down
and figure out how I can schedule the different activities in a way that works for me.” When you have these kinds of thoughts it produces three things. • You can look at the Carol Juergensen Sheets day and eliminate the activities that are not necessary. • You’re able to assess the day and decide who you might ask to help you with your time management that you will need to get your activities done. • You will have more confidence and assuredness in the way you handle these activities. The next step is to share how you did this with your child so that you role model the very behaviors that you would like for your child to adopt. Your child will also have to assess the day and figure out how he will get accomplish the many goals he has scheduled for the day e.g. soccer practice, studying, his gaming, and his social networking. You can help him work those things out by chunking them down. That might mean that you spend the evening before talking with him about what he can do differently for the next day or helping him to chunk the day in a way that helps him to organize it more efficiently or send him positive messages that he too, is capable of making the right decisions which instills a sense of confidence and assuredness in your child. Assisting your children in organizing their day and role modeling how you do this for yourself teaches your children that they have the ability to create the kind of day they desire and it all starts with a belief in themselves!

Signs of Autism in Younger Children Many children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may show differences in development when they are infants. This is often noted in their social and language skills. Many children with ASD can sit, crawl, and walk on time so the less obvious differences to look for may involve spontaneous gesturing, pretend play, and social language. Another difference to look for in addition to language and behavioral differences involves social interactions with peers.
Behavior Symptoms may include repetitive and obsessive behavior: • Lining up items • Resistance to change • Seems to be unaware of pain • Rocking, spinning, twirling fingers, flapping, or hopping • Walking in toes • Obsessed by unusual activities or objects • Sensitivity to smells, sounds, lights, etc.
The broad spectrum lends to many variations of symptoms so one child with ASD may look very different from another with the same diagnosis. The symptoms can vary greatly in severity from one child to the next.
Communication Differences: • Doesn’t respond to name • Few or no words by 16 months of age • May lose language or other milestones • Repeats what others are sayingecholalia
Some social symptoms may include deficits or an absence of: • Eye contact or makes very little eye contact • Responding to a parent's smile or other facial expressions • Looking at objects or events a parent is looking at or pointing to • Pointing to objects or events to get a parent to look at them • Bringing objects of personal interest to show to a parent • Appropriate facial expressions • Understanding of others thoughts and feelings based on their facial expressions • Concern or empathy for others • Interest in making friends
Early intervention is key, so if any of the symptoms are occurring a pediatrician or psychologist can guide in diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorders and assist in linking with Applied Behavior Analysis therapy.
