Have You Ever Caught A Leprechaun? With March, comes that sneaky little leprechaun who loves playing tricks. Lucky for us, building leprechaun traps can be a great way to target language!

First, you can brainstorm with your child what materials you will need to build a trap. Anything around the house will work: straws, toilet paper rolls, Popsicle sticks, napkins, yarn or even cups. By using tape or glue, you can work together to engineer a creative trap that is sure to capture that tricky leprechaun. While you are

constructing your trap, describe what you think the leprechaun is like (sneaky, little, tiny, quick) and what he will need to do to get through your trap (climb, crawl, roll, slide). Make predictions about what you think is going to happen. Having your child follow directions containing prepositions (put the plate on top of the cup) while building the trap together works on both listening and language! Don’t forget to use sequencing words like first, then, next, and last. If you have multiple children, they can work together as a team to make a creative trap while working on social language skills through negotiation and compromise. As a bonus, this engineering task targets motor skills! When you are all done, have your child retell how they built the trap to other friends and family. Spending time with your child while fostering their creativity and language is better than any pot of gold at the end of a rainbow!

Three Tips for Keeping Your Kids Safe

pril is National Child Abuse Prevention month and it’s just around the corner. Chaucie’s Place has worked to protect A children for almost two decades. After recent legislation passed,

an enormous opportunity presented itself to reach children and teens across the state with our programs. Our mission to end youth abuse and suicide has not changed, but our name has. Chaucie’s Place is now the Indiana Center for Prevention of Youth Abuse and Suicide (ICPYAS). ICPYAS aims to give families, schools and churches the tools to keep kids safe from abuse and suicide. You can be a part of the solution to end abuse. Here are three things you can do to help keep your kids safe: 1. Take a class. ICPYAS offers classes for adults who want to learn about how to protect children from abuse. Our Stewards of Children class teaches adults how to prevent and respond to child sexual abuse. Visit www.indianaprevention.org to see our upcoming classes. 2. Teach your child about secrets. Abusers often tell children that abuse should be kept secret. ICPYAS teaches kids that secrets can always be told to a trusted adult. Teach your children that they can be open and honest with you to combat this common predator technique. 3. Ask your child’s school about their body safety program. Indiana schools are now required to teach staff about preventing child abuse and neglect, and to educate their students about staying safe. Many Indiana schools use ICPYAS’s trained staff to educate students and teachers. Ask your child’s school about what program they use and if they have any parent materials for you to learn about their program. Don’t be afraid to ask your child what they learned and if they have any questions. ICPYAS is passionate about creating a safe community for all children to learn, grow, and play. ICPYAS provides prevention education to over 90,000 Indiana students each school year. We also offer volunteer opportunities for families each year at our Carmel office. To find out more about ICPYAS and our life-saving educational programs, visit www.indianaprevention.org. Anna and Catherine are presenters. Anna is educating high school students with our Teen Lures program. Catherine is educating a class of adults in the Stewards of Children program.

You Can Always Turn a Negative into a Positive Are you ready to develop better parenting skills, which in turn, will create a sense of better mastery for 2019? If you know that you are not happy with your childrearing, then you need to shift your energy to create the parenting skills you need to become a more effective parent. This requires looking at your situation differently. When something negative is occurring, is there a way to glean something positive from it? This will definitely require a shift in how you think. If your kids are challenging you, they’re being disrespectful, they’re telling you no; you can practice good emotional maturity and not react to their negativity. Instead you can give them a consequence for their disrespect and choose to notice their effort, not their outcome. You can ask yourself, “what can I do to make this a win?” Maybe you tell yourself, I reacted with more confidence and didn’t let them see me sweat. You may have disengaged and said to yourself, I will no longer stay in the room when they are disrespecting me. Practicing shifting your thoughts helps you to detach and not be as affected by misbehavior. It also gives you a better sense of mental health. This stuff is hard, but once you start doing it, it becomes a normal practice. So, if something bad happens, let’s say your child gets detention for not turning in homework, you can say to yourself, “I’m the poster child for believing that eventually my child will learn from this consequence and will make better choices in the future.” Or you can say, “I am thankful that the school is helping me create the village that my child needs to function in today’s society.” When you do that, you feel better.

I’m not asking you to be Super Parent, but I am saying that you have the power to determine what you will tolerate from your children. When you do, then you get to say, “I am no longer going to give them the power to make me feel like Carol Juergensen Sheets I am a bad parent because of their misbehavior.” I can choose to give them consequences and watch them decide if they are going to learn from them. Then you keep the faith that eventually they will get it and you breathe a sigh of relief. We have 60,000 thoughts a day and most of them are negative. You may walk around thinking thoughts like “I’m so tired, or we’ve got a blizzard coming tomorrow, or my kids are so disrespectful, or my spouse treats me poorly, or I hate my job.” For every negative thought you have you can experience a turnaround to empower you. Change statements like “I didn’t do this right” to “I could have done this better.” Or “I wish I would have had more time to organize my closet” to “I will spend more time on the important things in life.” Or, “I’m always thinking about me” to “It is good to meet my needs first so that I can meet the needs of others.” You get the gist. Can you turn that around and at least settle into what you need to do to have a better life? When you work at things, when you look at life with a positive spin, when you make the effort, it all works to your advantage, and that’s what good mental health entails. It’s about feeling good about your life.
