Do You Have a Narcissist in Your Life? I recently met with a woman who came in to discuss techniques she could use to improve her relationship with her boss. She explained that he ranted and raved when things did not go his way and that Carol Juergensen Sheets everything needed to revolve around him. She stated he could do no wrong and seemed to be self-inflated. He had become especially difficult when he made advances toward her and she did not sleep with him.

exploitation of others. Narcissists tend to form friendships that they can benefit from or who will enhance their self-esteem. They expect great dedication from others and they overwork them without regard for the impact on their lives.

Once she refused him sexually, his whole demeanor changed. She was no longer important and he pretended that she did not exist. This left her feeling puzzled, confused, and eventually she even doubted herself. She couldn't figure out why, months after his sexual advances, was he continuing to ignore and discredit her as an employee. Her feelings shifted from being angry with him about his inappropriate sexual advances to questioning what she had done to make him dislike her so.

What can you do if you have a narcissist in your life? Since a person with NPD will likely never change, it is generally advisable to get out of the situation or minimize contact whenever possible. Here are some tips to keep you sane while you figure out your coping plan: • Create your own supports to validate and encourage you. • Develop that "Teflon" approach, so that the NPD's criticism won't stick. Never internalize the criticism; don't let it affect your self-esteem. • Find ways to validate yourself. • Create distance whenever possible. • Know your boundaries to protect you. • You may need to play the game… to survive. Minimize the dysfunction. You may have to boost the NPD's ego, complimenting him or her on their appearance, their performance, or their abilities.

As my client described this man, he seemed to fit perfectly into a specific personality type called a narcissist. People with Narcissistic Personality Disorder have a pervasive pattern of grandiosity. Their self-importance keeps them from acknowledging their weaknesses. People with NPD are typically very arrogant. They generally require excessive admiration. They appear arrogant but their self-esteem is invariably very fragile. A sense of entitlement is evident in these individuals, as well as unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment. The narcissist expects to be catered to and is puzzled or furious when this does not happen. This sense of entitlement, combined with a lack of sensitivity to the wants and needs of others, may result in a conscious or unwitting

A person with NPD is a master of turning the table back on you. Once you challenge them, they will have to discredit you to diffuse the situation. Since it is ego dystonic (not compatible to how they think they are), to have made a bad choice, they have only one alternative, which is to discredit your character.

Just remember, an independent person is threatening to someone with NPD. It is almost impossible to have a normal relationship with him or her. Know that this is not a personal issue against you, it's a personality issue with them.

SPOTLIGHT The mission at Joy’s House is to serve adults living with life-altering diagnoses and their families by providing exceptional adult day and caregiver services. At Joy’s House our clients are called Guests, which invokes a feeling of compassion and care that is a tangible part of our culture. Ninety-eight percent (98%) of our Guests are living with challenges related to basic aging as well as various other diagnoses. Of these, over 70% have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. Life-altering diagnoses can be difficult for one’s sense of self and spirit. Adult Day Services Our Guests benefit from the physical and mental stimulation we provide through daily interactive activities. The challenges our Guests face do not define who they are while at Joy’s House. We acknowledge personal needs and limitations, but focus even more on each person’s interests, hobbies, and skills. We host Guests seeking safety, companionship, and engagement in the community. Many of our Guests are no longer able to stay at home alone safely due to their diagnoses, including Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, Parkinson’s disease, autism, multiple sclerosis, Down syndrome, and Traumatic Brain Injury. Joy’s House services are designed for those with a wide range of abilities and interests and is a non-medical adult day service. Caregiver Support Services We understand that caring for a loved one is beautiful and a highly rewarding experience but can also be exhausting and stressful for families. We offer innovative educational and service opportunities to caregivers. We answer questions, listen to concerns, and provide resources to help support caregivers as they then care for their loved one. 6

Our caregivers come from all walks of life and different stages in their caregiving journey. Some caregivers utilize our adult day services for years, while some families are only with us for a short time. By utilizing our adult day services, caregivers are able to have respite – whether one day a week or all five weekdays. For those caring for individuals experiencing significant memory loss and other life-altering diagnoses, witnessing their loved ones engaging in enjoyable experiences can bring relief and reconnection. During the temporary closure of our adult day services due to COVID-19, many of our Guests declined more rapidly than they would have if they had been able to attend our onsite services. In our survey, over 80% of caregivers reported that their loved one had experienced decline, such as: • Decreased verbal skills

• Increased isolation • Depression • Falls • Anxiety • General communication issues • Lack of self-care • Roaming • Delusions • Agitation • Sleeping issues • Less physical movement and stimulation • Nutritional issues • More assistance needed with toileting • Lack of interest in general activities and happenings

If there was ever a question about the impact of our adult day or caregiver support services, it has been erased in 2020. The time of shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic has shined a bright light on the importance of what we do for those most vulnerable in our society. In response, Caregiver Crossing, originally a weekly radio show and video series, has now relaunched as a podcast. It was created to address the myriad of issues facing families and caregivers. It features experts across the country who provide comfort, resources, and joy to caregivers. The podcast is co-hosted by Tina McIntosh (Founder & CEO of Joy’s House) and Terri Stacy (WIBC radio host) and you can listen here https://joyshouse.org/programs/ caregiver-support/caregiver-crossing/.

So, our doors are open, and we love serving Guests like Ms. Allene, and caregivers like her daughter, Carole, as you see in the photos. (You can view a video of their story at https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=lEbNOkk0izo.) We wear masks, social distance, and clean every surface repeatedly. We welcome new friends into our home as we continue to be Joy’s House. Find Us Joy’s House has two locations: Joy’s House Broad Ripple, 2028 E. Broad Ripple Avenue, Indianapolis, IN, 46202. Meals on Wheels of Central Indiana is more than a home meal delivery service; it is the only provider of medically-tailored meals to the area’s homebound and chronically-ill community. These meals are prepared by Central Indiana’s world class healthcare institutions and delivered each weekday by our volunteers. At Meals on WheeIs’ core is the belief that food is medicine. Their clients receive meals that are prescribed by their physician, taking out the guesswork when trying to meet their dietary needs. Most special diets can be accommodated (i.e. heart healthy, diabetic, low sodium, renal, etc.). Malnutrition is costly for the healthcare system and studies show that access to nutritious meals improves health outcomes, lowers healthcare costs, and improves the quality of patient care. Simply put, medically-tailored, home-delivered meals are high-impact and low-cost for homebound and chronically-ill neighbors. At the beginning of the year, Meals on Wheels could not have known just how quickly the organization would be thrust into the front-lines of a global pandemic. COVID-19 exacerbated the financial and logistical challenges in accessing food, and the program became a critically necessary resource. As the impact of the pandemic deepened 14

and spread, so did the anxiety among many of our clients, wondering if they will get their meals or if they should let anyone into their homes. With the recent implementation of a “no-touch” delivery protocol, Meals on Wheels is creating a safer home for the client by limiting outside exposure; and additionally, reducing the needs of personal transportation. Throughout these unprecedented times, Meals on Wheels can be proud that they have had zero delivery disruptions and in fact, were able to step up by serving additional family members in the household also adversely affected by COVID-19. Meals on Wheels of Central Indiana relies on the generous support of individuals, corporations, foundations, and grants for the majority of funds that make their mission possible. In fact, 88 cents of every dollar go to clients through their Virginia Wesley Financial Assistance Fund, which means your donations will have an immediate impact on their clients. Meals on Wheels also has a community of individual and corporate volunteer delivery drivers who are the backbone of their organization. Your time is as valuable as your treasure and they welcome both. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact their Volunteer Development Director, Barb Renshaw at brenshaw@ mealsonwheelsindy.org. To learn more about their program and ways you can donate, please visit www.mealsonwheelsindy.org.
