A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT According to the CDC, older adults and people who have severe chronic medical conditions like heart, lung or kidney disease are at a higher risk of serious illness if they contract the COVID-19 virus. This means that most people with Medicare are at a higher risk. Your health, safety, and welfare is our highest priority. In addition to practicing good everyday prevention through things such as hand washing and avoiding touching your face, the CDC says there is more you can do to take precautions against COVID-19 and reduce your risk of exposure: • Avoid crowds, especially in poorly ventilated spaces with limited air circulation. • Defer all cruise ship travel worldwide, particularly if you also have underlying health issues. • Avoid situations that put you at increased risk, including non-essential travel such as long plane trips.

Remember: Medicare covers the lab tests for COVID-19 — you pay no out-of-pocket costs. And Medicare also covers all medically necessary hospitalizations. Please say “I found it in Indy Metro Woman Magazine!” Thanks!

When Someone Shows You Who They Are, Believe Them. In your relationships, you hope that people will be honest, faithful, loyal and trustworthy. There is a certain sense of security inherent in a trustworthy relationship. When you have been betrayed, it affects you Carol Juergensen Sheets internally and externally. You have trouble trusting others, and more importantly you have trouble trusting yourself. When people let you down, it creates a sense of uncertainty. Betrayal happens to everyone at some point in his or her lives. Betrayal can occur with a spouse, a family member, a friend or a coworker. Most people who experienced betrayal saw the signs but continued to give that person the benefit of the doubt. The reality is that people will fail you— due to their own motivations, impulses, stupidities, and rivalries. Approximately 25% of all betrayal occurs with absolutely no forewarning. This is by far the most difficult type of betrayal because it leaves you shellshocked and devastated. I worked with a woman who was chronically betrayed by her family. They had badmouthed her and colluded against her. Although she was devastated, she continued to hope that she could rebuild the trust. Many of our sessions were spent breaking through that layer of denial that she could get what she needed from her family. Unfortunately, this woman fell into the “abused child syndrome”. She emotionally wanted to return to her abusive family no matter what the cost to her emotionally. So how much should you put up with when you are chronically abused? When a pattern has been established whereby a person multiply betrays you, it is your responsibility to avoid contact with them at any cost. If your boyfriend has cheated on you multiple

times and he has a history of unsavory behavior there is no reason to expose yourself to the betrayal that will continue to occur. People make honest and unintentional mistakes. In these situations, you must clarify your feelings and expectations, before trust can be rebuilt.

When you have been betrayed: 1. Handle it with integrity: It’s normal to want to retaliate. Don’t stoop to their level. 2. Assess the risk factors: Decide whether you’re going to rebuild trust or end the relationship. 3. Confront: Confrontation is a necessary step in growth. Although some theorists believe that you have the choice to say nothing and walk away, I believe that confrontation increases self-growth and may even assist you in breaking patterns if you fall prone to betrayal-type relationships. 4. Be clear and direct. 5. Set boundaries that keep you safe. It is important for you to assess your relationship with the betrayer. Look at the person’s history. Have there been a lot of chaos, boundary violations, and drama in this person’s previous life? Has the person repeatedly violated smaller boundaries in your life? Perhaps they have shared too much of your personal life, used your credit cards, borrowed your things without asking? If you question the past choices that the betrayer has made- you are likely headed for a rocky road with that person. Is the person generally honest with others? If your partner or friend is telling small white lies there is a good chance that you will also, be a recipient of that type of relationship behavior. In dealing with betrayal, the most important thing you can do is work on creating boundaries that keep you safe. Don’t ignore the warning signs. Keep your eyes open and trust your gut. Betrayal has much to teach you—not only about others, but also about yourself.

ELECTION SPOTLIGHT

Our nation faces many challenges—rising healthcare costs, public health crisis, insufficient support for education, increasing gun violence, crumbling infrastructures and pressing threats to our environment and economy. Difficult as these challenges are, we can resolve these challenges with effective leadership and working together. Throughout the history of our country, Americans have risen to the occasion time after time, and I have no doubt that we will do it again. We need leadership in Washington that listens to your concerns and works for what is right. That’s why I am running for Congress in Indiana’s 5th District. As your Representative in Congress, I will be guided by Principled Leadership, Accountability and Accessibility, and Family-Centered Policies. Principled Leadership: In these polarized times, it’s important to have a Representative who places country over party. You deserve a public servant, not a self-serving politician. My 30 years’ experience in business provides me the skills required to get things done in Congress. Leadership requires listening, humility and working with the highest standards of integrity, honesty and transparency. Accountability and Accessibility: Government plays an important role in overcoming our challenges, but government cannot do it alone. Government, Business and Individuals all have a role in building a brighter future. For every issue, it is critical to consider who is best suited to act and be held accountable. I will be accessible and actively listen to your concerns and suggestions. Family-Centered Policy: Legislation shouldn’t just be about the future, but about making life better now. I envision a world where all children are safe at school and can receive a public education that prepares them to meet the challenges of the 21st Century. A world of strong families, where everyone has a job that provides an acceptable standard of living, adequate healthcare, and compassionate support for our seniors.

"Where I stand on the Issues"

Healthcare: Everyone in the United States should have adequate health care. No one should experience medical bankruptcy. I support exploring early access to Medicare to enroll seniors ages 55 to 64, who have paid into the system for decades and need these benefits now. I support strengthening the Affordable Care Act and moving toward a universal coverage system for every American. We must focus on preventive healthcare to catch problems when they are more easily resolved. Education: I am a strong advocate for public education. A well-educated population is required to compete globally, preserve our democracy, and meet our myriad future challenges. We must support our teachers through professional development programs. We must renew the focus on early childhood education including Head Start. Every child deserves the opportunity for a quality education to be prepared for a successful future. Student loan forgiveness programs must also be protected and enhanced. Gun Violence Prevention: I support Second Amendment rights. At the same time, we must acknowledge that everyday, more than 100 Americans are killed with guns and 200 more are 12

shot and wounded. Suicide, homicide, children and teens, domestic violence are all part of these statistics. We must do better. I strongly support common sense gun reform, such as thorough background checks, licensing requirements and keeping guns out of the hands of those with mental illnesses. I support increased Federal research into gun violence prevention. Environment: Climate change presents a very grave threat. We must tackle this massive problem head-on to protect our environment for ourselves, our children, our country, and the planet for generations to come. While many try to deny its significance and duck responsibility, I support efforts to reduce our carbon footprint. We must invest in renewable energy sources, launch large scale reforestation and everyone should consider altering the mix of foods we eat. We must rejoin the Paris Climate Accord. Immigration: We must develop a humane and sensible approach to immigration, considering the needs of American citizens and our economy, and America’s role in the world, particularly as climate change forces more people to leave their homes. I strongly support the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which permits law-abiding young people who were brought to the United States as minors to continue to live here, go to school, fight for our country, pay taxes and contribute to our communities.

"Who I am"

I grew up in a small rural town with a community school that fueled my love of learning. Outside the classroom I was a Girl Scout and 4-Her. An early love of sports led me to earn a scholarship to play basketball at the University of Louisville, shortly after the passage of Title IX. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications and Computer Science. I also pledged a service sorority, Delta Sigma Theta, and through that organization, I made a commitment to a lifetime of service. In that spirit, I’m running to represent Indiana’s 5th District in the U.S. House of Representatives. I will bring substantial business experience to my work in Congress. After college, I started my career with Xerox Corporation. During 30 years with the company, I earned increasing levels of responsibility, managing people, budgets and strategy before retiring early as a managing principle and consultant. Through my work at Xerox, I came to the great state of Indiana. While working full time and balancing the demands of raising a family, I earned my Master’s in Business Administration from Indiana Wesleyan University. During my career, I worked with a diverse mix of people and cultures, from all industry sectors, to accomplish common goals. My work included business process reengineering and I am certified in Lean Six Sigma – a terrific tool for problem-solving. I’ve been a business coach for women-owned businesses. I’ve owned two small businesses and I understand the importance of small business in creating jobs and powering our economy. Currently, as a full-time candidate I find time to speak to high school students on the skills needed to transition from school to work or further education. I particularly like to speak about ethics, budgeting and investing. I have served on the board for one of the oldest STEM programs in the country, the Minority Engineering Program of Indianapolis. I currently serve on the Mayor’s Advisory Commission on Human Relations for the City of Carmel, the Madison County 4-H Extension Board and the board of Families First. Family is a huge part of who I am. Don and I have been married 35 years. We have three adult children, three grandchildren and one on the way. We are blessed to have three of our parents still with us at the young ages of 95, 94, and 91. As your Representative in Congress, I will use my experiences and skills to lead our community and deliver results to all Hoosiers. My experiences have prepared me well. I am ready for what lies ahead and ask for your support and your vote to be the Representative for Indiana’s 5th District.
