Your Body is Hardwired for Hemp!

What the Heck is Hemp?

To understand the benefits of CBD and Hemp Oil, let’s get acquainted with the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The ECS has been found to be the most widespread receptor system in our bodies, (as well as in the bodies of all mammals), and is critical to the regulation of many important physiological pathways: including; immune & nervous systems, brain, digestion, skin, liver, cardiovascular system, genitourinary function, pain perception, hormonal regulation, and even maintenance of bone mass. Cannabinoids, (such as CBD – cannabidiol) are chemicals that activate the cannabinoid receptors in the Endocannabinoid System. Endocannabinoids occur naturally in our body, while Phytocannabinoids are plant based, found in Hemp, and can used as a supplement to support this network system.

Full Spectrum Hemp Oil vs. CBD Isolate.. what’s the difference? Full Spectrum Hemp Oil refers to the entire

plant being used for the oil. It contains over 100 cannabinoids including CBD (cannabidiol), minerals, vitamins, iron, terpenes, and antioxidants. It’s nature’s multivitamin. CBD Isolate, on the other hand, is simply purified CBD that has been extracted from the marijuana or hemp plant and isolated from the other cannabinoids. While there can be instances an isolate may be useful, studies have shown that a full spectrum offers more overall benefits and long-term results.

Cannabimimetics .. say what???

Several common plants contain compounds which are cannabimimetic, literally mimicking the biological activity of the classical cannabinoids, despite not sharing their structure. These Cannabimimetic compounds aren’t the same as those found in Hemp (meaning no CBD), yet they can have positive effects on the ECS by acting on the endocannabinoid receptors. Examples include: Echinacea, Ginger, Turmeric, Hops, Green Tea, Black Pepper, Rosemary and Copaiba.

Creating Support Do you have enough support in your life? Are there people who you could call in a heartbeat if you needed a favor, or needed to talk? Is there family in your life who Carol Juergensen Sheets would come to your rescue if you needed them? Unless your life is filled with support, it may be time to rethink your relationships and create what I call a “family of choice”. Many of my clients are socially isolated because they have concentrated on doing for others and have lost touch with what they need in their lives. It’s never too late to cultivate new friends and family. Don’t you think it’s time now to create that family of choice and make it a priority in your life? Some of you are probably blessed with strong family ties. Psychologists know that good family relationships can keep you feeling empowered. Too often, however, I work with people whose family members are negative influences. They don’t contribute to my clients’ self-esteem, as a matter of fact, they seem to contaminate it. Does your mother, father, or sibling frequently put you down? Do you feel depleted after you talk to them? Are they critical of your actions and your decisions? If so, you need to create a new family—a family of choice. This does not mean that you abandon your old family. You may need to limit your contact with negative family members and add to your support network. A family of choice is a group of people who are in your life to empower you. They feed your self-esteem instead of depleting it. They are folks who are there for you during the tough times, but also during

celebrations of life. They might represent a mother or father figure, or it may be a girlfriend who is like the sister you never had, or the male in your life who acts like a big brother. As with most projects, you will need to look at your relationships and explore and investigate new situations to find people who are like-minded. Take a look at your environment. Is there someone at church, in your neighborhood, at your gym, in your fraternity, or at your kids’ soccer game who notices your positive qualities? Groups are a great way of creating families of choice. It’s helpful to create as many lifelines as you can. There are a lot of you out there that don’t have nearly enough. The more lifelines you have, the less dependent on unhealthy relationships you will be. When you rely on just one or two people to replenish you, you end up either burning them out or being too needy and taking whatever they can give you. This can result in staying with someone even if they aren’t healthy You will need to put effort into your relationships. You will need to actively call people, write them, return favors, send cards, or go to lunch together. It’s well worth the effort. It’s like the Biblical principle—what you invest comes back a tenfold. You need to find a way to connect to people to develop those relationships. Don’t spend your life in a vacuum with only the occasional visit from an outside person. It’s important to increase your contacts to add to your family of choice. It doesn’t just happen, you must set it up that way. The healthiest thing you can do is to develop a strong network. Especially if your family continues to let you down.

Steps to Success

It’s 8:15AM on a Monday. The 40 women who live at Dove Recovery House for Women are in ‘Morning Reflection’. They start every day sharing struggles and successes, and offering encouragement to one another. Case managers challenge them and provide support to prepare the women for the next day of their journey to recovery. There is a close bond between these women who live together, and share in each other’s celebrations and fears. Now in its 20th year, Dove House serves women with Substance Use Disorder in the Indianapolis area. This nonprofit organization is the largest transitional housing and recovery program for women in Marion County. Services include housing, trauma therapy, life skills and job readiness classes, nutritious meals, parenting classes, and family reunification. A critical step to helping women access treatment is removing financial barriers so they can focus on getting healthy instead of worrying about expenses. A growing base of community and philanthropic support makes it possible for Dove House to keep housing and programming free. “Women living with addiction deserve the chance for a healthy, self-sufficient future. More importantly, they deserve someone who will be their advocate and a voice of hope, love, and encouragement”, says Dove House Executive Director Wendy Noe. “This is what drives our staff, donors, and community partners.” Since taking the helm four years ago, Noe is passionate about empowering women and addressing the stigma attached to addiction. “There is an assumption that addiction is a problem of the homeless, uneducated, or someone who doesn’t have a support network. Dove House wants to change that narrative, so the community understands addiction as a disease that can affect anyone – your coworker, a student, your spouse, parent, neighbor

or a friend.”

317-964-0450

www.doverecoveryhouse.org The impact of Dove House is significant. Last year, 71% of the women were employed, volunteered, or enrolled in training or school. Nearly 80% were reunited with family and children, and 65% successfully completed the program. Yet with the opioid epidemic there is an increased demand for recovery services. In Indiana, opioid overdose deaths have more than doubled in three years. Today at Dove House, 54 women are waiting to get a call that a bed has become available. To reduce the wait time – and to support women on the wait list – Dove House received grant funding for ‘Steps to Success’, a new community outreach and housing initiative. “Now we can start providing case management to a woman when she first calls Dove House. It’s heartbreaking when someone who has the courage to call, hears she has to wait a few months – and then we hope she’ll be there when a bed becomes available,” says Noe. “We need to start working with women when they first contact us, so we don’t lose them while they wait. We’re thankful that funders recognize this need and will provide financial support for a solution.” A groundbreaking part of ‘Steps to Success’ is that a client who successfully graduates from Dove House may receive a rental subsidy for 8 months of housing, which in turn makes a space available for someone on the wait list. “It’s incredible to see clients leave Dove House and flourish as contributing members of society”, says Noe. “We’re indebted to every person who plays a part in helping to empower the women here. With each financial gift or donation of a household good and item, our clients feel the support of others in the community and know that they’re not in this fight alone.”
