Motivation for Weight Loss and Fitness Goals
Despite good health and a reasonable level of fitness, our bodies can develop disproportionate contours or stubborn localized fat deposits. These problem areas can be frustrating and demotivate us from sticking to our fitness regimen and weight loss goals.
While there is no substitute for a healthy diet and consistent exercise, treatments exist that compliment and enhance existing fitness programs. New non-surgical and minimally invasive therapies can remove fat cells, smooth out the appearance of cellulite, and tighten skin. These treatments combined with regular exercise can act as motivation to stick with weight loss and fitness goals. What treatments exist for fat reduction, cellulite improvement & skin tightening? • CoolSculpting is a non-surgical treatment that freezes and destroys fat cells. This no downtime treatment is excellent for targeting stubborn fat pockets on the body and under the chin. • BodyTite (RF) treatment reduces fat and tightens skin. RF waves pass through the top layers of the skin and reach the subcutaneous fatty layer to reduce fat and cellulite. At the same time, RF energy passes through the dermal collagen layer to tighten the skin. Dr. Chernoff will often combine BodyTite with other treatments such as LipoSculpting. 2
• UltraSculpt is a non-invasive treatment that uses ultrasound and bio stimulation to target and reduce stored fat cells. The treatment uses high intensity pulses to activate muscles to burn up fat – similar to several hours of intense exercise. UltraSculpt is commonly used on the lower abdomen, thighs, buttocks, upper arms, and flanks • MicroNeedling RF is a fractionated collagen generating treatment that improves skin on the face and body. The treatment infuses skin with rejuvenating energy using a device with innovative fine needles. The needles create tiny punctures in the top layer of the skin triggering the body to create new collagen and elastin that remodel and improve skin. • Surface RadioFreqency energy employs the power of thermal energy to shrink fat cells and stimulate and strengthen collagen. Chernoff Cosmetic Surgery offers two treatments using RF energy: Exillis and IntraGen. These treatments speed up the metabolic activity of fat cells causing the fat cells to shrink. At the same time, the RF energy stimulates and strengths collagen and elastin fibers for improved skin tone. • LipoSculpting RF is a minimally invasive procedure performed by Dr. Chernoff that removes fat using liposuction and sculpts

contours to create beautiful natural results. Additionally, Dr. Chernoff combines BodyTite RF with LipoSculpting to shrink excess tissue and tighten skin. • Kybella fat dissolving injections use enzymes and proteins to open the fat cell membrane and release stored fat. Kybella is most often used under the chin. What treatments are most effective? Dr. Chernoff’s patients have the best results when a treatment plan is matched with their specific concern and the patient follows the treatment plan. For example, some non-surgical treatments require consecutive sessions performed weekly. If a patient does not believe they can follow this plan, our office will suggest an alternative option that is more of a “one and done” type treatment. What causes skin laxity and cellulite? As we age, the collagen in our skin weakens. When skin is thinner and weakened, it can take on a lumpy and dimpled skin appearance, also known as the 'cottage cheese' appearance, associated with cellulite. Treatments such as MicroNeedle RF that strengthen elastin and collagen fibers combined with fat reducing treatments, improve the appearance tone and texture of skin. Do skin tightening and cellulite creams work? Cellulite creams have a limited impact on actually reducing cellulite but are
beneficial for maintaining skin tone. We suggest products that increase collagen and elastin fibers such as Alastin, DefenAge, and UnderSkin products. Is there a way to permanently remove fat? Yes. We offer several treatments that permanently remove fat. LipoSculpting is the most effective for removing fat permanently in a single procedure. CoolSculpting is effective at removing up to 25% of fat cells in the area treated. Most patients require several CoolSculpting treatments to reach their fat reduction goals. Other treatments such deep MicroNeedle RF can effectively remodel skin reducing fat and shrinking tissue. Before considering fat reducing treatments, Dr. Chernoff reinforces that cosmetic treatments are not a replacement for regular exercise and proper nutrition. Individuals with stubborn areas of fat who exercise regularly are the best candidates for these procedures. The best plan is to use the body sculpting procedures as a reward for successfully sticking with your fitness regimen.

THE GIVER If I had to characterize one personality type that has the most difficulty changing, it would be “the giver”. The giver is a person who spends her life doing for others. She consistently put her needs on the back Carol Juergensen Sheets burner and takes care of all of those that come before her. Invariably, she hooks up with spouses, children, grandchildren or employees that depend on her in an insatiable way. The more she gives, the more the insatiables want.
the dependency with the least amount of guilt possible. When takers are totally dependent on you for their basic needs or money, not only will they get nasty when you withdraw it, but they will understandably have difficulty maintaining their existence on their own. There are all sorts of outcomes that may occur because the giver withdraws their financial, emotional or physical giving.
After the giver has established a well-developed pattern of giving, the relationship between giver and taker gets ugly. If the giver decides to do less, the takers get desperate. They may start moaning and groaning that they can’t do it without the giver’s help. They may begin to manipulate or guilt the giver into giving.
A dependent person can’t get better, stronger, and more self-reliant without struggle. It’s imperative that a giver understands that when they help their loved one, they are hurting them because they are sending messages that they can’t do it for themselves. Psychologically, the giver thinks they have helped, but really, they have created an unhealthy dependence that has conditioned takers into thinking they can’t do it for themselves This is a hard concept for givers, because it goes against what they have been doing all of their lives.
I witness takers who tell the giver that she is selfish because she won’t provide him/her with material things. I have seen spouses expect to be totally taken care of or have the giver take care of everything in the house When a giver comes into my office, she doesn’t necessarily come to “fix the giving”. She comes because she is tired, depressed, or feels guilty because she isn’t giving enough and as a result, she feels adequate. She knows something is missing in her life, but she doesn’t know what. Givers are in serious need of boundary training. She has high expectations and is easily manipulated into guilt. She fears that if she doesn’t do things for the taker, the taker will not make it in life. The giver has created a vicious cycle where the more she gives the more dependent the other person is upon her. The challenge becomes weaning takers from
Unfortunately, the giver will have to witness things getting worse before they get better. This is an excruciating process to watch others suffer without intervening and yet it is necessary.
I generally see a giver in therapy once they have been totally depleted of their emotional and physical resources. They come in when they have no more to give. This is when they need to work on receiving. Givers are totally uncomfortable with receiving help or assistance from others. I encourage givers to look for opportunities to be passive and to receive and experience others giving to them. Givers don’t know whether it’s tougher to stop giving, or to start receiving. Once givers effectively break the pattern of giving, they will experience the benefits of receiving and being replenished. When this occurs, sometimes for the first time, they experience the give-and-take of life.

Meals on Wheels of Central Indiana is more than a home meal delivery service; it is the only provider of medically-tailored meals to the area’s homebound and chronically-ill community. These meals are prepared by Central Indiana’s world class healthcare institutions and delivered each weekday by our volunteers. At Meals on WheeIs’ core is the belief that food is medicine. Their clients receive meals that are prescribed by their physician, taking out the guesswork when trying to meet their dietary needs. Most special diets can be accommodated (i.e. heart healthy, diabetic, low sodium, renal, etc.). Malnutrition is costly for the healthcare system and studies show that access to nutritious meals improves health outcomes, lowers healthcare costs, and improves the quality of patient care. Simply put, medically-tailored, home-delivered meals are high-impact and low-cost for homebound and chronically-ill neighbors. At the beginning of the year, Meals on Wheels could not have known just how quickly the organization would be thrust into the front-lines of a global pandemic. COVID-19 exacerbated the financial and logistical challenges in accessing food, and the program became a critically necessary resource. As the impact of the pandemic deepened 18
and spread, so did the anxiety among many of our clients, wondering if they will get their meals or if they should let anyone into their homes. With the recent implementation of a “no-touch” delivery protocol, Meals on Wheels is creating a safer home for the client by limiting outside exposure; and additionally, reducing the needs of personal transportation. Throughout these unprecedented times, Meals on Wheels can be proud that they have had zero delivery disruptions and in fact, were able to step up by serving additional family members in the household also adversely affected by COVID-19. Meals on Wheels of Central Indiana relies on the generous support of individuals, corporations, foundations, and grants for the majority of funds that make their mission possible. In fact, 88 cents of every dollar go to clients through their Virginia Wesley Financial Assistance Fund, which means your donations will have an immediate impact on their clients. Meals on Wheels also has a community of individual and corporate volunteer delivery drivers who are the backbone of their organization. Your time is as valuable as your treasure and they welcome both. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact their Volunteer Development Director, Barb Renshaw at brenshaw@ mealsonwheelsindy.org. To learn more about their program and ways you can donate, please visit www.mealsonwheelsindy.org.
