Our Son's Samuel and Joseph’s Story For the past 5 years, I have watched my boys develop and grow at Jerry Hansman's Dojo. Karate has provided a framework of leadership, discipline and most importantly responsibility. On the road to their black belts my children have enjoyed going to karate classes. They enjoy the ability to go all year , not just during a season like other sports. Moreover their classes are staggered at different times every day so that we could always find days to fit our ever-changing schedules. Karate has helped my children outside of the dojo in many ways. Their selfconfidence has greatly improved over the years as they regularly perform in front of a large group during class, at tournaments and at belt ceremonies. This has helped them in school by dramatically decreasing performance 2
anxiety with presentations. Likewise, taking standardized tests like ISTEP are seen merely as another challenge much like learning a new kata or starting a new weapon. It is encouraging that my kids have demonstrated the knowledge and skills to protect themselves should those situations ever occur. Learning karate has also helped my children realize more of their potential, developing a sense of accomplishment along the way. It improved their coordination and balance. It taught them to appreciate constructive criticism and that hard work pays off. They have also learned to work with and learn from others. It has instilling in them a sense of responsibility for their actions and an understanding that actions have consequences, karate has laid a foundation for lifelong development.

Two Common Misconceptions About ABA Therapy by Angelica N. Gray, MA, BCBA Clinical Director
Many parents have misconceptions about what Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy is and how it is used to treat Autism. The most common misconception is “my child doesn’t have behavior problems, so we don’t need ABA.” Parents are often surprised to learn that ABA is not solely for treating problem behavior! ABA teaches children how to communicate their wants and needs, to label items in their environment, hold conversations, understand sarcasm and jargon, play appropriately with toys, learn the rules of and play board games, put on clothes, brush their teeth – and so much more! Additionally, ABA Therapy can help children who have a fear of dentists, don’t like the buzz of the clippers when getting a haircut, or have difficulty shopping in stores such as Wal-Mart or Meijer.
child is 14 and too old for ABA.” Individuals with Autism have needs that change as they get older. As children get older, parents may want help to teach their child to learn how to form friendships, work within a group, or to learn interviewing and vocational skills. The techniques and procedures used in ABA can help to teach a variety of skills to children of all ages. Where Should We Turn? When our son Jayce was first diagnosed we weren’t sure where to start. Our 2 year old had gone from grinning and engaging with us to not even acknowledging we were in the same room or even smiling for pictures. We were devastated and had no idea what was going on or that we would ever get to see the boy we knew again. We had heard of the great success stories parents of children on the spectrum were seeing through ABA and knew that was where Jayce belonged, but we didn’t know how to start the process. So I turned to the internet and found The Applied Behavior Center for Autism (ABC) and at that point everything became so easy. We didn’t have to deal with insurance or filling out the tireless repetitive forms. It was a breath of fresh air in a whirlwind of paperwork that I had already been filling out and re-filling out for his other programs. ABC at that time was solely based out of Indianapolis but they traveled to Terre Haute several times to make sure Jayce and I understood the program and felt 100% comfortable before beginning therapy. It wasn’t long after therapy started that Jayce began following
instructions and most importantly he would grin and run to us when we would get home from work. These were some of the most exciting moments, AND THEN he started asking for his cup! He was completely nonverbal when he started the program and now we are up to 2 and 3 words at a time. He surprises us almost every day with something new. I honestly do not know what we would do without ABC and all of his supporters there. The team at ABC hasn’t just helped Jayce they have helped US as a family. We understand more about Jayce and how to incorporate what he is learning in therapy at home. They have even become advocates for me when it comes to school meetings and speaking with his teachers. They are always more than willing to be at those meetings with me and help bridge the gap between school and therapy. All of the therapists at ABC have become our Autism family, and we absolutely couldn’t be more proud of Jayce and his progress. --Jessica, Mother of Jayce

Create A Community by Joining a Parenting Group Parenting is not easy and if there was one thing that I could instill in you as a Family Therapist it would be to really believe in yourself and have confidence in your child rearing abilities. We know this job is tough but if you parent with conviction and stay true to the fact that you absolutely are the one in the family that has the ultimate control, your child will thank you for it later.
healthy values for your children.
I say this because this is a time in your children’s life when they believe they should have more say in their day-to-day functioning than you’re comfortable with and it may feel difficult to know how far you should push them or what the right directives are in managing their care. It is their job to convince you that they know best and yet you are the parent and you absolutely have more wisdom and intuition than they do. You have to trust your gut to do the next hard thing and redirect them into healthier choices.
Families First offers wonderful resources that equips parents with skills to deal with the many challenges of child rearing. They offer classes that will support you and connect you to others who are looking for positive solutions.
The key to doing this is to stay calm, identify their feelings, use reflective listening so that they know that you clearly hear them, and then come up with two additional choices to present to them as alternatives.
You don’t have to do parenting alone. There are many reasonable and free services that are available to increase your parenting tools and resources.
Carol Juergensen Sheets
The Life Recovery Center also offers affordable classes to assist parents in positive discipline, communication and problem solving. Active Parenting offers a 3-session program for parents of children ages 5-12. They also offer programs for tweens and teens, especially for children who have special challenges like mood swings, attention and focus troubles.
Despite the fact that kids want to dictate their choices to you, it is imperative that you stay calm and strong and reinforce that they need to follow your guidelines.
Systematic Training for Effective Parenting is a course that can typically be taught in a one day workshop. There skills better equip you to have more confidence and encourage consistency which is the key to healthy parenting.
This can be particularly tough when your children may be living in 2 households and you don’t necessarily want to be the bad guy but you also know that you are responsible for their guidance. Even if the other parent doesn’t find it necessary to set up a healthy structure, it is a requirement of good parenting and someone has to do it. If you are reading this column, I suspect that you want to do the next right thing and you are willing to sacrifice some peace and quiet to instill
The important thing is that you don’t have to do it alone and there are resources that will assist you in in setting up the proper expectations for healthy relationships in your family. There is no reason to do it alone. It really does take a village to raise a child so why not seek out the experts who can make your life more manageable. Don’t you think that you deserve the support and expertise of others to assist you in the most important job of your life?
