Camp EAGLE: Summer, Sun, and Social Skills! Angelica N. Gray, MA, BCBA Clinical Director, TIIBA
We are now enrolling for Camp EAGLE. Camp EAGLE is a summer day camp for individuals who are diagnosed with Autism. We provide ABA Therapy in a camp format. Our campers typically have so much fun, that they don’t realize they’re learning new skills! Camp days are filled with opportunities to increase social and communication behaviors. We take advantage of these opportunities in multiple settings within our center–groups, our simulated classroom, and 1:1 work stations. Additionally, we take what we learn in the center and apply it out in the community. There are two weekly outings to places such as local parks, bowling alley, water parks, The Children’s Museum, music centers, Sky Zone, Monkey Joe’s, Conner Prairie, and more! Our summer program is an excellent way to keep your child engaged and learning throughout the summer months. In addition to focusing on social and 4
communication behaviors, we target functional academic skills, daily living behaviors, and work on decreasing maladaptive behaviors. We encourage parent involvement throughout our summer session. Parents are welcome to come and observe their child and meet with the clinical team to learn the strategies and techniques that are utilized within the camp. In addition, we have TIIBA Family Days scheduled for the Indianapolis Zoo and Eagle Creek Park. Our enrollment is limited and open through April 30th. Camp dates are Monday, June 5th through Friday, July 27th. Camp hours are from 8:30a – 4:00p, Monday through Thursday; 8:30a – 12:30p on Friday. Each camper’s schedule may vary between these hours depending on specific needs and recommended number of hours per week. Most major insurance and Medicaid are accepted. Call us at 317-388-8131 to begin your enrollment process!

New World Youth Orchestras was founded in 1982 by Susan Kitterman as an ensemble that would provide a unique, high-quality musical experience for young musicians in Central Indiana. Under Mrs. Kitterman’s direction, New World has matured artistically, grown in size, increased its performance and educational opportunities, and received high acclaim from the community. The 100-member, fully instrumented New World Youth Symphony Orchestra is comprised of members ranging in age from 12 to 18 years. Over the next decades the organization expanded to include the New World Philharmonic Orchestra and the New World Youth Concert Orchestra, to serve the needs of younger players seeking orchestral opportunities.
In May 2015, the New World Youth Orchestras entered into the next phase of its history when Founder and Artistic Director Susan Kitterman stepped down. Her successor was Adam Bodony, an alumnus of the New World Youth Orchestras, DePauw University, and Indiana University. In April 2016, the New World Youth Symphony 8
Orchestra made its Carnegie Hall debut followed by a full-length feature concert at Orchestra Hall, home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in April 2017. This year, the New World Youth Symphony Orchestra makes history again as the first nonscholastic orchestra to participate in Music for All’s National Orchestra Festival. Participation in NWYO gives each student the opportunity to play with some of the most talented young musicians from Indiana, work with professional coaches from the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and other nearby universities, and experience guest conductors and speakers. Students not only experience the joy of making music with other dedicated musicians, but they also develop a deeper understanding of orchestral playing and develop relationships with new people who share their passion for music. One recent graduate said of her involvement with New World, " Not only did New World teach me how to play in an orchestra, it also taught me how to play well with others within the orchestra. Too many times we are only told to learn the notes on the page. But New World went deeper than that. I am grateful for the opportunities New World has given me and the lifelong friendships that came with it. NWYO is now scheduling auditions for the Concert (strings only through 8th grade), Philharmonic, (strings, winds, and brass through 12th grade), and Symphony (full orchestra through 12th grade) Orchestras. Further details and the audition application are available on our website www.nwyso.org.

The Truth About Parenting Parents can have common misperceptions about parenting. By the time they make it into my office they are discouraged about their role as a parent. They usually subscribe to some myths that keep them in a state of confusion. Myth #1: You need to be a friend to your child. Truth: A child needs you to be a parent. Although your relationship can certainly have friendship-like qualities, you and your child are not equal; therefore, you can’t truly be a friend to your child. As a parent you are in the driver’s seat and your children need to know that you are in control of their lives. Even though you give them choices, you are ultimately the decision-maker. This lays the foundation for safety and security. I’ve seen parents who wanted to be friends with their child, so they backed down from rules, consequences, and punishments which in the long run did a disservice to their child. Myth #2: You wanted children so that someone would love you back. Truth: Childrearing can bring a great deal of self-satisfaction and yet it is challenging, and it evokes lots of emotional reactions. There will be days when you will have polarized feelings about your child. One minute you love him and the next minute you may find yourself wishing you could trade him in for another child. It is normal to have those feelings, but healthy parenting requires that you learn how to neutralize your angry feelings and not take things personally. Myth #3: It’s not how much time I spend with my child, but how I spend our time together that counts. Truth: In today’s fast-paced society, kids need to spend daily chunks of time with their parents. Life can be hectic and family time like sitting down to dinner affords a child an opportunity to de-stress and debrief. If your only one-on-one time with your child is traveling back and forth from activities, your child misses
opportunities “to be.” He will be distracted by the business of his life. As you assess the quality and quantity of your relationships with your child, you must constantly work toward providing: • Downtime • One on one time Carol Juergensen Sheets • Family time When you provide these types of opportunities, a child has a better chance of getting both quality and quantity. Myth #4: Your child’s needs should come first. Truth: It’s a delicate balance that you must be able to meet your needs simultaneously with that of your child’s. Although it can feel like a juggling act, it is imperative that you replenish your needs so that you have something to give to your child. I frequently see two types of “extreme parents” in my office. I work with parents who put their children’s needs on the forefront and cater to them one hundred percent of the time. Their world revolves around their children. They have lost the balance in their own life. The other type of “extreme parent” puts their own needs before the needs of their child. The parent frequently leaves the child to fend for himself, fitting the child into his/her life as opposed to doing the opposite. The parent finds others to provide for the child and does not have the capacity to care for others. If you believe that you subscribe to any of these myths, spend some time looking at how you can change your thinking and behaviors to support a healthier relationship with your child. Follow these foundational principals and watch the relationship grow!

Spring Language We all know that April showers bring May flowers, but have you realized flowers can be a great opportunity to get your hands dirty and have fun with your child while working on language? There are lots of engaging and exciting activities for you and your little ones to do together during this beautiful month. Working in the garden or planting flowers in a pot provides a lot of opportunities to expose your kiddo to a variety of language. You can work on growing their vocabulary by labeling everything you use (flower, dirt/soil, shovel, and water) and talking about the different parts of the flowers (pedal, stem, leaf ). Describing the flowers’ smell, feel, appearance, and size or practicing using verbs as you dig, plant¸ and pour some water before you 18
watch your flowers grow are also great targets. For older kids, you can sequence the steps of planting flowers and talk about plant lifecycles. Don’t forget to use those sequencing words, like first, then, next, and last. If you don’t have the resources to plant your own flowers, that’s no problem! Walking around your local nursery, garden, or neighborhood gives you wonderful opportunities to practice all of the same language. Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty while you’re planting new language to help your child grow. What are you waiting for? Dig in!
