Another Family's Success Story The birth of a child is such an exciting time – there are no limits for the future! But for some families, the dream is suddenly limited when their baby does not pass their newborn hearing screening. For Ian Lawrence’s parents, the news was not concerning, but they agreed to come in for further testing. The diagnosis was difficult to process. Ian had significant hearing loss in both ears. The Lawrence family considered pursuing American Sign Language, but for many reasons they wanted to try spoken language first. However, if they wanted the best opportunity, they needed to get hearing aids quickly, and work with a therapist to use them appropriately. Ian had his first set of tiny hearing aids when he was only two months old, and the Lawrence family found a specialized therapist through
St. Joseph Institute. By the time Ian was one, he was making good progress – babbling and responding to sound, but he needed stronger amplification. They made the decision to pursue cochlear implants. Ian recovered from the surgery quickly, and was wrestling with dad the next day. Therapy was not simple, but the results were remarkable. By the time Ian was two, he was speaking in phrases of two or more words. At three, Ian’s communication skills were close to other children his age, and after preschool at St. Joseph he will soon enter Kindergarten at his local school. He loves to talk about dinosaurs and rockets. There are no limits to his future!

Parental Burnout Can Be Prevented Parenting is a demanding job because you’re always on duty 24/7. Regardless of whether you are a stay at home parent, or you work outside of the home you may experience periods of “parental burnout.” Parental burnout occurs when you no longer feel that you can manage your household duties, your childrearing, and the other expectations of your life. You typically feel bad about your decisions which effects your confidence as a parent. If you are a single parent, you may be more prone to burnout because your stressors oftentimes double and more is expected of you. In today’s society, parents can experience much isolation. You may have the inclination to do everything by yourself and you may resist asking others for help. This may leave you feeling that there is never enough time to handle all of the responsibilities. Parental burnout can lead to some serious complications. You can experience a variety of physical problems when burnout occurs. Mental health issues such as depression, increased anxiety, and physical ailments like heart disease, obesity, and diabetes also increase as a result of burnout. You may ask yourself, what can I do to prevent burnout? There are many things that you can do to assess your life and determine what you may need to add or delete from it. As you look at your schedule, do you make time to take care of your own needs? Intentional self-care is essential when balancing the needs of your family with your own. Are you able to ask people for help? It takes a village to raise children and therefore, you need to strategize with other parents how you can work together, to give each other time off.
If you’re in a committed relationship, it’s important to have date nights so that you can focus on the relationship without talking about the kids. It’s often helpful to “physicalize” the stress of burnout, which means creating a regularly Carol Juergensen Sheets scheduled time to improve your fitness regime and adhere to it. Exercise will offset burnout because it will allow you an opportunity to de-stress and focus on building your physical, emotional and mental acuity. These sorts of tools can be very helpful in self-care so that you can balance your work and your family life. Homework assignment: What is one thing that you enjoy doing that you have put on the back burner because your life seems too hectic? Give yourself an opportunity to fit that into a weekly schedule. It can be very helpful to write it down on the calendar and find a time when it is least likely to be interrupted. This may look like going for a run in the morning before the kids are up or getting a babysitter and doing a “wine and canvas” party with your girlfriends, or scheduling basketball with the guys on Sunday morning before church. When people burnout, they oftentimes fear that they’ll never find the energy to take care of themselves again. In reality, when you systemize your life to include more self-care you decrease the amount of burnout that you feel. It is so important to organize your time so that you take better care of yourself. It shows the kids that you matter too, and that you have a life that includes them and also is separate from them. There is only one of you, so you need to conserve your precious energy. Make sure that you treat yourself as healthily as you can.
