Making a Difference. Together. Volunteering at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana is a rewarding experience – from heartwarming moments helping families at the House, to the thankfulness for one’s own life and privileges that service to others often shines a light on. But for Christine “Chris” Jackson and Vicki Browne, volunteering has also kindled a close friendship. Chris and Vicki didn’t know one another prior to volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House – Chris started volunteering in 2015, and Vicki followed about a year later. From their first shift together, the pair hit it off. You would think the two have been lifelong friends. They interact in much the same way they serve the House – as a pair, finishing each other’s thoughts or tag-teaming work projects. Chris explains, “I don’t think we take each other very seriously,” while Vicki finishes “we’re very compatible.” It’s this back and forth that has made them an endearing and appreciated pair of volunteers at the House, engaging families and children, and putting them at ease during trying times. Volunteering can put life in perspective. “You think you have all the problems of the world, you think you have a big heavy load, but then you step outside of your box,” Chris explains. “I try to imagine some of these families that have been here for months, and they have jobs and they have homes and they probably have pets. You think about something small that goes wrong in your own home, about what an inconvenience it is. This puts it in perspective, and you quit thinking about yourself for a bit.” The experience unveils treasured moments at every turn. Guest Services Volunteers are the first faces people see when they stay at the House and that allows them the opportunity to witness
the profound impact staying at the House has on those families. It’s an impact that volunteers help create. Chris recounts how a sick child’s sister staying at the House recently celebrated her birthday. Volunteers, including Chris, stepped up to make it a special day for the little girl. They gathered a collection of donated toys and decorations and put together a party – a memory she and her family will carry for a lifetime. It can be a fast-paced environment. “You hit the ground running when you come in. There’s physical work like cleaning rooms or doing laundry, we are busy the whole time we’re here. It’s good to have the variety of things to do,” Vicki shares. But despite the fast pace, taking time for families has an impact on volunteer and family alike. Chris puts it all into perspective, “For me, it’s making the personal connection with another person. I think for the families, it makes them feel like they aren’t another number. They’re more than just an illness.” Donating your time and talent to the Ronald McDonald House makes a difference in the lives of the more than 5,000 families we serve annually. Opportunities for groups and individuals are available, including guest services, preparing and serving meals, and much more. Guest Services Volunteers receive 12 hours of hands-on training with staff and veteran volunteers. The 4-Step Formula to Achieving Your Goal If you are somebody who dreams and wishes they could implement their visions, you might begin by following this 4-step formula. Initially, when you have a goal or a Carol Juergensen Sheets dream or a vision, it can be very helpful if you write that vision down so that you can stay cognizant of it, not only in your mind, but in your schedule. Asking yourself what you might need to do to actualize that dream requires that you write down five things a week that will move you closer to your goals. After you have written it down and you’ve created some chunkable steps toward your action plan, you should find the time every day to imagine yourself having already accomplished that goal. This by far is the hardest part of goal actualization. Most people want to have a vision that affords them more money, a different house, or a unique lifestyle, but they can’t actually picture what that would look like for them. So, think of that goal and what it means to you. Want children in your life but aren’t able to conceive? Write down what it would like to have that first adopted child. Who would you need to contact to make that happe? Share it with a best friend so you can hear yourself speak it out loud. Then ask someone wiser and more knowledgeable than you to help you to identify what it is you need to do to make that happen. When you create a social network that supports you, you are much more likely to actualize your goals, and that social network will help to hold you accountable by checking in with you! The social network supports, inspires, and
encourages you to move you closer to the outcome. So, let them know that you would like for them to take an active part in being part of your team. Many people are uncomfortable asking for help so recognize that this is a new behavior for you too. Asking for what you need adds energy to your goals. When you follow this formula of writing down what you would like, creating some action steps that move you closer to goal completion, visualizing what it would look like to have actually accomplished your goal, and creating that social network to help hold you accountable, you are much more likely to believe in yourself and to believe in the process. Belief in one’s self is absolutely crucial to completing your goal. Homework: Think about something that you want and ask yourself on a scale of 1-10, 10 being “I one hundred percent believe I can get that accomplished” and 1 being “There is no way I have what it takes to make my dreams happen.” What number did you give yourself? If it’s a 4, ask yourself what it would take to make it a 5. If it’s a 7, ask yourself what it would take to make it an 8? Next incorporate that into your work strategy for success, because the most important thing for you to believe is that you can accomplish your goal. You’ve heard the old adage, “If you conceive it and believe it, you will achieve it.” Put that mantra in several places around the house, the office, or in places that you’ll see it frequently. As you visualize yourself accomplishing the goal, use the mantra over and over and over again; “If I can conceive it and believe it, I will achieve it.” You have everything you need to make your goals happen!
