As kids go back to school, it is important to educate them on bully prevention. 1 in 4 children report having been bullied at least once during the school year. Here are 3 ways you can help your child deal with bullies. Self-confidence and a clear list of options is a great way to arm your child against bullies. At Phoenix Rising Karate, we teach students to identify bullying behavior and positive ways they can deal with them. For a complete list visit our website at www.phoenixrisingkarate.com.

3 Ways to Help Kids Deal With Bullies 1. Watch for possible signs of bullying, including not wanting to go to school or ride the bus; “losing” clothes or other items; torn clothing; and a lack of friends. Another red flag is a child who comes home angry. 2. Forget the myths about bullies being aggressive because they’re insecure. Many are popular and use their social power to pick on weaker children. One motivating factor with bullies choosin g their target is that their victim is somehow viewed as different from them. 3. Don’t ignore bullies. That often leads to an increase in violence. Bullies are motivated by a need for power, a need to control and an inability to direct their aggressive feelings in more acceptable ways. Many children don’t have a clear response to bullying behavior. Let them know they can respond in a positive way by walking away, using their words to say they don’t like that behavior, and they can turn to friends and adults who can help.

Good Grief! School Has Started!

Although I understand the rationale for shorter summers, and more frequent and often longer vacations during the “school year,” I was not ready for the beginning of school this time!

Can you relate? At j&R Tutoring we have a summer schedule and a school year schedule. We have just moved to the school year schedule, and the past two weeks have been somewhat chaotic! Not all the schools begin at the same time or even the same week. Then there are those special back-to-school events that conflict with someone’s “new” time! This change can be troublesome for some students. Adults have the advantage of years of experience, but the younger elementary student may be experiencing this sudden change for only the first or second time. Until the new schedule becomes the comfortable normal, parents can do

their children a huge favor by making their home time as regular and stressfree as possible. I realize that some adults are just not built to follow a schedule or even a pattern of behaviors. If you are one of those, do not be surprised if your elementary student can’t find his backpack, forgets his homework or loses his notebook. In families where there are children of varying ages, varying bus schedules, varying sport practices, etc. (oh, yeah & after-school tutoring) establishing a schedule can be a Herculean effort! But if you want your child to feel confident and ready to take on each day, parents must create an atmosphere of calm and readiness as well as a willingness to do whatever is needed to achieve that. Oh, and if they are having trouble at school – give j&R a call!!

Two Common Misconceptions About ABA Therapy by Angelica N. Gray, MA, BCBA, Clinical Director

Many parents have misconceptions about what Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy is and how it is used to treat Autism. The most common misconception is “my child doesn’t have behavior problems, so we don’t need ABA.” Parents are often surprised to learn that ABA is not solely for treating problem behavior. ABA Therapy can be used to teach communication, social, and daily living behaviors.

A second misconception about ABA is “My child is 14 and too old for ABA.” Individuals with Autism have needs that change as they get older. As children get older, parents may want help to teach their child to learn how to form friendships, work within a group, or to learn interviewing and vocational skills. The techniques and procedures used in ABA can help to teach a variety of behaviors to children of all ages.

ABA teaches children how to communicate their wants and needs, to label items in their environment, hold conversations, understand sarcasm and jargon, play appropriately with toys, learn the rules of and play board games, put on clothes, brush their teeth – and so much more! Additionally, ABA Therapy can help children who have a fear of dentists, don’t like the buzz of the clippers when getting a haircut, or have difficulty shopping in stores such as Wal-Mart or Meijer.

If you have questions about how we can serve your child’s unique needs, contact us at 317-388-8131.

Choices Are Empowering What do you tell your child if you want them to begin therapy? It is likely that you have watched them go through some tough experiences and you want to make sure they have some extra resources to help them through it. First and foremost, you must demonstrate honesty with your child. That may look like "I have been worried about how this divorce has affected you and wanted to work with a professional to get some help and she asked me to bring you to talk about the issue." Or it may sound like "I have been worried about your grades and you don't seem motivated to do better.... I know part of the problem is the way that I handle things, so I called a counselor and he asked me to bring you." You always own the problem as it is what we call a "family systems" issue. it is imperative to be honest because ultimately you are asking your child to be honest with you. Don't be surprised if you meet with resistance because your child is already feeling different and probably does not want to be identified as what we call "the identified patient."

Always give your child choices because this affords them some autonomy but also allows you to guide them in a direction that is helpful. Sometimes I have encouraged parents to tell their child that he will only have to meet with the therapist 5 times. This lets the child feel like he has some choice in the matter but also leaves the responsibility to the therapist to assess the child and decide how to relate with him and make him feel comfortable. Or I might tell the parents to explain to the child that during the initial evaluation all family members will be present but after the first session the child can

determine whether to see the therapist alone or with his parents. Again, it becomes the therapist who will ask the child if she can occasionally involve the parents. I find that kids are much more amenable to do what the therapist asks as opposed to the parents. This week I had a 15-year-old adolescent in my office Carol Juergensen Sheets whose parents had tricked him to get him into my office. They had told him that they were going out for lunch and had to make a quick stop before they had lunch. That quick stop was me. You can imagine his dismay when they stopped in the parking lot and informed him that they were coming in to talk to me about his depression. As I walked them into the office I could feel the tension and sat down with them and assured him that I was sorry that his parents had not been honest with him and reminded him that they had his best interest at heart. His parents sheepishly admitted that if they had asked him to meet with me, he would have resisted. I quickly decided to give the teen back some power and after I got a brief history, I walked the parents out. Initially he said there was no way he would meet with me, but then he described his severe depression and I decided to give him a choice. I assured him I could arrange for him to meet another therapist who was a younger male. Although he thought about it, he decided to stick with me. Never underestimate the value of choice!
