Brody’s Story Our Brody was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder at 18 months old. We’ve heard many times, “That’s so young, how did you know?” It became very clear at 15 months old. He was born healthy, and met all of his milestones on time. He was happy, social, great eye contact, and he even spoke a few words. At 15 months old, I started to become concerned. Over a period of 4-6 weeks, he began to lose many of the things that defined our Brody. He stopped smiling as much, no longer responded to his name, he lost the few words that he had achieved, he stopped waving hi and bye, he stopped giving kisses on commands. He began to resist eating food; we had to regress back into pureed baby foods and he would only drink out of one Sippy cup. He became so clumsy, always falling for no apparent reason. He began to stare at lights, ceiling fans, and became hyper focused on spinning objects. In a nutshell he began withdrawing from our world, into his own. I remember crying myself to sleep many nights; feeling like someone stole the life out of my little boy, and left me with his precious body. At that point, we insisted on our pediatrician referring for an evaluation, and began speech therapy and occupational therapy thru our local First Steps. Being an RN, I knew in my gut, that my son had Autism. The official medical diagnosis came at 18 months. I took about a month to process the information, and deal with my emotions, while working on a game plan for his treatment. From there, we began to tour different ABA centers in Indy. We toured three and were terrified, so we quit touring facilities, and thought there’s no way we can send our son to those places at two years old and feel confident about it. We were scared out of our mind. When Brody was 23 months old and still not
making many notable gains, we decided to tour one more facility. That being the VBCA. We instantly felt safe, warm, and optimistic. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate. They listened to our story, our fears, and our hopes. The facility was clean and inviting. Each kid had their own unique room and that was important to us. For the first time, we felt like there was some light at the end of our tunnel. The staff helped every step of the way with insurance. The very next month Brody turned two and he began attending VBCA 32 hours a week. This was a big adjustment for our family, and our little boy. But, it was the best decision for our son and he immediately made gains. His eye contact drastically improved, he began stacking blocks, and playing with puzzles. He learned how to CLAP! He began giving kisses again, and WAVING. The list goes on and on. Now, he is 3 1/2 years old and he’s still making gains. He is now beginning to make sounds, and say words. He is also now working on potty training! He’s doing amazing! VBCA has been excellent with these skills. They’re always collaborating and making the changes necessary for growth. We don’t know where we’d be without The VBCA, and the staff. They have literally changed our life, and given us hope for a bright future. Isaac’s Autism Journey
By: Krista Schultz (Isaac’s Mother) Isaac was 4 when he started attending The Applied Behavior Center for Autism. It was somewhat hard sending our little guy off for 8 hours a day, but from day 1, everyone at ABC was so wonderful in making us feel like Isaac was safe and secure and being well cared for. The changes in Isaac these last 2 years have been phenomenal. His speech and communication have increased dramatically. I can ask him questions about his day and he can answer me. When he talks about his friends at the center, he is referring to clients and therapists both! When we go in public places now, he says hi to people and asks their names. He asks people to play with him and works very hard to interact with those around him. These are things Isaac always wanted to do, but didn’t have the skills to do prior to ABC. To see him doing it now and bringing him such pleasure is heartwarming to us. One of Isaac’s biggest and hardest struggles has always been eating. Food was incredibly stressful to him and everyday eating was a huge battle. At the age of 5, he was only eating baby foods and other purees such as pudding, yogurt and applesauce. In all honesty, we thought Isaac may never eat solid food. When they started the food program at ABC, they were giving us daily feedback about his progress. It was unbelievable that this kid was putting these foods to his mouth and even taking bites of them. The day the Team Leader and Behavior Analyst came to our home to introduce the program here, Isaac sat down at our table and I watched him take bites and eat a banana. I can’t even put into words how this felt. We have continued to build on the program and I can proudly say that our guy no longer eats baby food. He eats real food at every meal and we even go to restaurants now and he will eat! This would never have happened a year ago. I won’t say we don’t ever struggle
with eating, but to look at where we were 12 months ago and where we are now, in our eyes is nothing short of a miracle. Another big step we are now taking is starting kindergarten. Isaac attended preschool 3 mornings a week last school session at our church and his therapist attended with him. He did extremely well. The other kids were very accepting of him and included him and he participated in all activities that they did. To see him in his cap and gown on graduation day in the sanctuary clapping his hands and singing the songs with the other kids---we couldn’t be any more proud! These things and so many others have been made possible for our Isaac by the hard work and dedication of the ABC staff. It’s hard to put into words what they have brought to our lives. Every day, they make a difference. It is so obvious how much these folks care about our kids and I hope they know how important they are to us and all those they are helping. When Isaac does something he is proud of, he can’t wait to share it with his therapists. They aren’t just staff members to us, they are family. They came into our lives at a time when we so needed them and we look so forward to seeing what the future holds for our Isaac. We are so grateful and so proud to be a part of the ABC family.

Empower Your Child in the Morning and At Night It seems so early for the kids to be going back to school and yet you have likely already spent a couple of weeks getting them up, getting them ready, and sending them off to school. As you prepare them for each school day, I would ask you to send them a positive message in the morning before they leave for school and at night when you tuck them into bed. You have such an awesome responsibility in preparing your children for their destiny. And your primary job as a parent is to instill in them your belief and faith that they are amazing individuals and will go far in life. The best way to do that is to send them positive messages about their inherent strengths. This requires that you look at their personality and determine what you appreciate about them. Research shows that if a child has positive thoughts prior to going to bed, it will instill a sense of confidence that will help strengthen his/ her sense of self. Isn’t it nice to know that you can be the caretaker that instills this sense of personality strength? Kids need to know what you appreciate about their character. Maybe they are generous, kind, loving, and compassionate. Perhaps they are determined, focused, driven, and helpful. These are the kinds of qualities that you want to reinforce in them. When you verbally acknowledge what you appreciate about them and what makes them special and unique you are setting them up for success. Let’s face it is, as a parent it takes discipline to do this with consistency and regularity. Your days are hectic, and time is precious. Make it a point to put reminders around the house so that you remember to reinforce what you appreciate about them every morning and every night. When you do this, you invest in their “emotional love
tank” and create a sense of confident self-esteem. I know you may be saying to yourself “I have not been doing this and I may be responsible for them not feeling that sense of security in their lives” but you can Carol Juergensen Sheets start this practice any time and make a huge difference in their life. Most adults have 70,000 negative thoughts a day and this practice instills in children that they are capable human beings who have many great gifts to offer the world. How would your life have been different if you had gone to bed knowing that Mom or Dad was proud of not just what you achieved in your normal day but who you were as a person? Well isn’t it incredible that you have the capability to program positive thoughts into your child at any age. Don’t be surprised when you use these affirmations, if your child debunks them or responds with a negative. It is common for people to minimize positive comments. Just remember that this technique works for anyone...your spouse, your friends and even the dog. I know that when I use this with my husband, he teases me and says, “Who has replaced my wife?” But I also notice that big grin he has on his face because I have noticed his kindness or determination. So don’t become discouraged if your child minimizes your initial comments. I guarantee if you practice this diligently, your children will eventually look forward to leaving for school or going to bed, being reminded that they are appreciated for being the unique human beings that they are!

Alex’s Story
Brain Balance has been an amazing experience for my son Alex. Before Alex started Brain Balance he was anxious about school. Alex often times would get frustrated, after trying only once or twice when doing his homework. Alex could not tie his shoe nor ride a bike without training wheels.
After Brain Balance, I have seen a major transformation in Alex. One of the most significant changes that happened is that he became more present in his own learning. What I mean by that is Alex is dyslexic, but by doing the exercises from Brain Balance he became more determined to rise above his learning difference. Alex is not nearly as anxious about school, and homework did not have to be forced down his throat. He has shown great strides in reading. I find, that as we are out and about Alex is reading every sign he possible can. Alex can tie his shoe, and very well I might add. He also is riding a mountain bike without training wheels. That is a huge accomplishment. His balance and coordination has greatly improved, which has lead him to level up in his swim lessons. I know that when it comes to our children, we want the best for them. I truly believe that giving your child the gift of Brain Balance is a gift that just keeps giving. I’m so grateful that my son has had the opportunity to go through Brain Balance. I am also very thankful to the wonderful staff that not only supported my son, but me and my husband as well.
Sincerely, Charisse Alexander-Murphy

Early Intervention Most professionals will agree that early intervention for children with any type of developmental delay is critical. It can make a difference in the success a child is able to achieve. Often the child is able to develop the skills necessary to participate in general education, rather than needing special education services. One of my previous jobs was as a coordinator for the early childhood special education programs for a group of seven school systems. In that role, I have witnessed the power of early intervention on children with disabilities. One young boy had received therapies through First Steps (Part C of IDEA) which provides special services to children from birth through age three. Upon reaching his third birthday, the early childhood program in the local public school took over the services. As he was referred to the public school for services, testing was done to determine what types of therapies/programs would be most beneficial. The testing results indicated that this boy had a mild intellectual delay (low IQ). This information indicated that he would benefit from the early childhood special education classroom along with speech and occupational therapies. At first he attended the preschool program part time (two to three days a week) then moved on to a full time placement. Because he had a fall birthday, he was able to attend the preschool special education program for almost three full years. At the end of the preschool program, he was re-tested. The results of this testing indicated that he no longer had an intellectual delay and both his speech/language and fine motor skills were within the average range. He would not need any special services as he entered kindergarten. Was this a miracle? Had the school used magic to eliminate his disabilities? No, they 30
simply provided him with a structured, language rich environment in which he could learn. The ability to learn was always there, but due to environment that he was born into, it was unlikely that he would get the stimulation that he needed to progress. At preschool he was read to every day. He learned to use scissors, how to hold a crayon/ pencil, how to share and take turns. He learned to use a broader vocabulary to express his wants and needs. He was taught how to correct his speech errors so that others could understand him. He learned to follow directions. He learned to play cooperatively with other children, how to work together to achieve a goal. He learned how to follow the rules and behave appropriately in a school and classroom. He learned that school was a good place to be and learning was fun. He started kindergarten with all the skills that teachers want children to have. He was ready to learn. While not everyone can afford to provide a preschool program for their child, everyone can take time to read, to color, and to snip with scissors. Take time to go to the park to play with other children, go to the library for story time. Turn off the television and encourage your child to use their imaginations. Provide toys that allow them to pretend. Encourage your child to work and play with others. Take the time to talk with your child using adult language and listen to what they have to say. These activities can help any child develop the skills needed to begin school.
