A LETTER FROM

THE EDITOR

AUGUST 2014, VOL. 16

Dear Readers, Our August issue of Hollywood Weekly Magazine is a study in the power of creativity. Our Cover Story on French Actress, Model and Producer Clotilde Delavennat is a rare example of the great heights one can reach in Hollywood while still holding on to the basic principles of love and humanity -- essentially keeping the ideals that are the true motivation for any real artist who wants to connect with people on an emotional level. Her words and thoughts will resonate with anyone interested in using their art as a positive voice to be heard in this world. Visual art is at the heart of our second Feature Story on John Felix and his creative haven, Petra Gallerie & Boutique. An artist himself, John has founded a gallery which has hosted a worldwide community of artists, and now features the vibrant colors and spectacular artwork of Johnny Romeo -- direct from Australia and now a part of John Felix’s Petra Gallerie. The story of the formation of this gallery will touch your heart, as it has with our entire staff. Enjoy this August issue of HWM, and I hope you all tap into your personal creativity and share your unique voice with the world. Sincerely,

Anthony Ewart

Clotilde Delavennat Actress Model Producer . . .

WRITTEN BY: ANTHONY EWART FEATURING A PHOTO SHOOT BY DHRUMIL DESAI

“I AM GRATEFUL FOR EVERYTHING I’VE RECEIVED” 10 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

W

illiam Blake began “Auguries of Innocence” with the immortal line “To see a world in a grain of sand.” This line is the pure embodiment of the creative energy, romanticism and love of humanity that is Clotilde Delavennat. She is an actress whose aesthetic sensibilities are both classic and modern – she is Ingrid Bergman and Angelina Jolie, or a luminous character created by F. Scott Fitzgerald or Cameron Crowe.

C

lotilde Delavennat will tell you that being an Actress and Producer both require one to be an artist, but she considers herself an actress first. Producing a film she’s acting in is only testament to her level of passion for the project. Her new feature film with Writer/Director Odera Ozoka, “Hollywood Street,” is such a project. Ozoka wasted no time attaching Clotilde to his upcoming feature films in development “A Forgotten Place,” about Biafra, the Nigerian civil war, in the vein of Terrence Malick’s “The Thin Red Line,” and “Stick Figueroa,” a horror/psychological thriller Ozoka initially filmed as a short with Clotilde, and about to enter film festivals around the world. In addition, Clotilde is currently developing her first feature script with actress/ writer Isadora Ortega and multitalented artist Ruben Hernandez; a film dealing with the various ethnic faces and aspects of the Latino Diaspora in the United States.

S

o, where did all this begin? Where many beautiful things do – France. Clotilde is the oldest of three girls; all of them talented, educated and musical. Clotilde knew from the age of eleven she wanted to make movies – and dance. “Dirty Dancing” was a big influence on Clotilde because it combined her two passions: acting and dancing. To this day, in whatever country or city Clotilde finds herself in you can find her in one of the Latin dancing clubs when she’s not filming.

A

ll three Delavennat girls learned to play musical instruments. Clotilde plays piano; one of her younger sisters has mastered the harp to such a degree that she’s become a professional performer: singing, dancing and strumming that instrument of the Gods.

C

lotilde was raised by educators, both her mom and dad worked in schools, but her parents provided Clotilde and her sisters more than the equivalent of growing up in the Library of Alexandria – they were taught to love all people,

regardless of their religion, culture or nationality. This may have been the greatest gift Clotilde’s parents gave her, because it has shaped her life and her art.

T

he first time Clotilde witnessed a friend experiencing racism all the lessons her parents taught her about treating everyone equally and fairly suddenly came to life. This is the world they were preparing her for, and she made up her mind that this was the world she was going to change – and she would do it as an artist.

T

here aren’t many languages Clotilde doesn’t speak fluently: French, English, Spanish – a little rusty German; she’s currently mastering Italian. For a woman on a quest to unite this world through love and cultural tolerance, being multilingual is a necessary tool.

I

was curious, though: a woman who gives so much of her time and talent and energy to making a difference in this world – does she ever stop to do things for herself? Clotilde considered my question and switched gears. She reflected on things that make her smile. “The ocean,” she began, and then, “I like moments of beauty, whether it’s people interacting candidly or a scene in nature that makes you feel something. I like capturing the essence of a mood.” Discovering that Clotilde loves photography for this very reason doesn’t surprise me: artists are always artists, in everything they do and whatever situation they find themselves in.

S

till, I dug deeper. I wanted to know about love. Her love. Clotilde is an intelligent, talented, beautiful woman; I wanted to know what could possibly make a woman this strong happy. Putting her camera down and experiencing her own moments, what would be the perfect date for her? Again, I wasn’t surprised by her answer: “Anywhere that nature reminds us that she’s Queen. I love looking up – the sky, the stars. Open spaces. Untouched landscapes – it adds a certain purity and honesty to the moment. But I also love many places in Paris for their charm and picturesque touch: Montmartre, l’île Saint Louis, les quais de Seine, des rues de Saint Michel, to name a few places.”

12 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

C

lotilde has been invited, among her many collaborations, to model for the young and amazingly talented Italian Belgian creator/fashion designer Nathanaelle Couture – and with all her success in modeling and acting, Clotilde still finds time for the important things in life. Recently, she began sponsoring a little girl through Children International who lives in the Philippines. On Clotilde’s Facebook page she posted her picture, and wrote a touching letter of gratitude for the opportunity to have an impact on her life...and there was more. Her grandfather had just passed away, a close friend was about to undergo major surgery, and she was reflecting on the passing of her mother three years earlier – somehow all these thoughts converged and Clotilde typed through love, gratefulness and hope:

w

“ hat I asked myself, after these episodes quite different in nature, was: “What makes us lucky, happy, miserable, fulfilled, depressed? What does it mean to be “rightfully sad” or again fortunate..? When I lost my mom three years ago, it was initially very hard not to think about all the things that would no longer be or that I would no longer “have” (being able to talk to her, seeing her at my wedding, graduation, birth of my children), but then I attempted to focus (not always without difficulties) on everything that Had been, everything I Had had: I had been so lucky to Have Had a mom, and had been fortunate to live everything I’ve lived. Things didn’t always feel easy growing up, but I realized later with the distance how privileged I had always been throughout my life, and I am grateful for everything I’ve received.”

Through one of the magical wonders of synchronicity he found the embodiment of this artistic love in his wife, Petra. They made each other stronger artists and always dreamed of opening their own gallery. In fact, all of their friends, who were the first art collectors of their work, agreed that John and Petra should exhibit their work in their own gallery. n summary, we judge people by the clothes, jobs cars or where they live. Sometimes a person might miss out on the love of their life because they are looking at the outward appearance instead of trying to bring out the best of a person. I’m not saying spend all of your time trying to help that person validate himself with yourself because with some people that’s work in progress and it usually is not going to happen. How about treating people the way you want to be treated that sweet and often will have better results. We often hear that saying that God don’t like ugly. And this lady told me one time and he isn’t that fun of pretty either. Sometimes I think it is innate for humans to judge but

from reading we might need to start thinking outside of the box and don’t let that love past you by. Live and love, it’s not that hard. If you meet a person and that person likes you for who you are, try loving that person back. Women or men I’m not saying lower your standards but get with somebody who accept your inner soul and try to build on what makes you both happy together. Like Teddy Pendergrass use to sing.” It’s so good loving somebody when somebody loves you back. So in Closing,

I am also a people person and have been in other States and ran into people that I grew up with. I’m often teased about this. I love to go on long train rides and talk and make friends while getting to my destination. I also have two adult sons who I love so much and will also help them to accomplish their dreams. I have traveled the world and I think I like Brazil the most. They have uptown and downtown. And also rum punch and a lot of carnivals. I also like to dance and go on cruises. I like to shop and love a bargain.

FASHION SHARPENS ITS FOCUS ON SUSTAINABILITY

C

openhagen Fashion Week has intensified its focus on sustainability and launches among other things a line of fun, exciting, and green festival events for citizens to participate in.

When Copenhagen Fashion Week week begins on Sunday it is with a larger focus on sustainability than ever before. Both professionals attending the industry event Copenhagen Fashion Week but also ordinary citizens attending the open Copenhagen Fashion Festival will get to experience it.

Fashion Week was the greenest fashion week around. That is of course a position we would love to take since we already work intensely with the industry on making it more sustainable. In April Copenhagen was the host of the world’s largest summit on sustainability in fashion, and this season of Copenhagen Fashion Week we are proud to present both brands and initiatives in the program showcasing sustainable solutions and great designs made with care to both people and planet.”

Thus, when fashion week kicks off on August 5 it is with the CEO of Copenhagen Fashion Week, Eva Kruse, explains the opening show by Barbara I Gongini, a brand that designs beautiful quality fashion in sustainable materials and based enhanced sustainability focus: “A year ago Financial Times proclaimed that Copenhagen on ethical principals.

Open events on sustainable fashion With Copenhagen Fashion Festival people in town can look forward to a line of open events centered on sustainable fashion. All citizens are for instance invited to the fashion exhibition New Nordic Fashion at Nikolaj Kunsthal. The exhibition gathers contributions from almost 20 of the Nordic countries’ most prominent brands such as Filippa K, Designers Remix and Marimekko. Through the use of sustainable materials – e.g. milk, seaweed, and recycled bottles – all have created appealing designs without compromising the environment. The exhibition runs from August 4-10. Thursday August 7 the Christiansborg Palace, home to the Danish Parliament, opens its doors and invites the public inside for a debate. With the topic “Do consumers care about how clothes is produced?” representatives from the fashion industry, politicians and the industry’s CSR watchdog DanWatch discuss the

consumers’, politicians’ and the industry’s responsibility regarding production conditions. A green shopping route Green Walk maps a line of shops in Copenhagen that sell sustainable lifestyle products. The route aims at making it easier for the consumer to find the sustainable but fashionable alternatives. Friday August 8 at 1pm The Minister for the Environment Kirsten Brosbøl will leave her footprint on the route when she visits selected stores with CEO Eva Kruse. As the culmination of the fashion festival, City Hall Square will be transformed into a huge clothing swap market, Global Fashion Exchange. This happens on August 9 and everyone is invited. The purpose of the event is to come to terms with the throw-away culture and put focus on the more sustainable consumption patterns. Fashion, Hairstyles, & Hotrods! Allen Freeman Captures The New Vintage Modeled by Tracey Boateng AMC’s new hit series, Mad Men, has inspired a retro craze that has been sweeping worldwide. Fashion bloggers and creatives are taking elements of vintage fashion from the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s to create a new look called The New Vintage. Dynamite Editorials took inspiration from this concept and collaborated with Mint Salon to host a Mad Men inspired vintage photo shoot at their new location in Downtown Garden Grove California. Right next to Historic Main Street which is home to the longest running vintage car show in Orange County, this was the perfect setting for photographer, Allen Freeman, to capture a vintage inspired fashion story. For years, Orange County has been headquarters to a large niche market in the vintage pinup and rockabilly scene and this editorial spread reflects aspects of the OC’s style. Such as, local designer of vintage inspired dresses, Queen of Heartz, who provided wardrobe for this editorial. As well as local retailer, Ruche, who provided a few retro inspired statement necklaces to accentuate the looks. The fabulous retro-dos created by Mint Salon also took center stage in this editorial. Salon owner, Nicole Mesquit, recently opened her new salon specializing in everything from vintage hairstyles to precision cuts and fabulous color. For this photo shoot Nicole, along with her BFF and fellow hairstylist, Amber Grundy, offered their creative services to model, Tracey Boateng of Refresh Talent, taming her long locks and providing her with partial updos for this editorial spread. Mint Salon also services a long list of clientele for regular cut, color, styling, and special treatments. For more info go to: http://www.mintsalonoc.com/ After hitting the salon, Allen and Tracey ventured outside to capture images next to and inside extraordinary custom vintage hotrods. With hundreds of visitors and a row of colorful cars down the street, the lively environment helped to inspire and create what you see here. “The most memorable moment for me was taking Tracey to a large restaurant and photographing her on a long bright red bench seat. Very classy! All of the shop owners along Historic Main Street were very accommodating to our intrusions and we got some great shots as a result,” comments Allen Freeman. “My career began as a pinup model for brands in the rockabilly market so vintage style is very close to my heart and is at the core of my style choices today. Working with Mint Salon in this historic location made the fashion, hairstyles, and hotrods come together for a magical time warp experience that definitely shows in these images. The new vintage is all about mixing the old with the new in your own unique way and wardrobe stylist, Luis Macias, certainly did just that in this editorial spread, comments TNT Tauna, founder of Dynamite Editorials. FRENCH’ IT UP From Paris to Los Angeles arrives a personal stylist who brings style and substance. LINDA KHENE

BY JON SIMON

Paris and fashion are synonymous. This city has been known as the “cradle of fashion” for over 300 years. Designers like Jean Paul Gaultier, Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, Gabrielle Chanel, and Yves Saint Laurent have continued this fine tradition. These craftsmen of haute couture display to the world what to wear, but not necessarily how to wear it. What better way to make fashion accessible than to talk to a Parisian on Los Angeles soil. Linda Khene, born and bred in Paris, has recently opened her personal styling business “Linda LA Parisienne” here. Seeing the potential in someone is a favorite pastime of Linda. Her great satisfaction comes from helping clients find that inner spark that has been missing by adding her “French Touch” to their look.

HW:

How does your growing up in France inform your choices in styling?

LK:

It all starts with attention to detail. My mom taught me at an early age that detail can make anything come to life. She made everything seem effortless. I try to incorporate that feel and look when I help style someone. Growing up in Paris, I was surrounded by elegance, architecture, art, and history. I was very fortunate to have that upbringing. It is part of my DNA.

34 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

HW: When did you start styling? LK: As a teenager I would style my friends before we went

anywhere. It continued through our schooling. My friends would lineup in my house and have me help them before we could even go out. Whether it was makeup, accessories, or outfits…I did it all for them. It was my pleasure.

HW:

I noticed your business card features the phrase “confidence is everything.” Why did you choose that?

LK:

Styling is very personal for me. I lacked confidence growing up. I felt awkward in my own shoes. Today, I put myself in the shoes of others and show them they are only steps away from discovering their confidence. That is what fulfills me. When people like themselves it reflects on everything they do, the way they speak, walk, and interact with others. Your friends notice. Your family notices. Everyone notices. I have also been getting a lot of notice on my Instagram at Linda LA Parisienne.

HW: What is your process? LK: When I meet a potential client I like to just listen for

a bit. Find out what their style is and understand the image they want to portray. I do a closet check and have them try on some outfits from their wardrobe and see how they wear them. A mirror is a very helpful tool in this process. People act and move a certain way in front of their own mirror and that tells me a lot. I consider their budget next. We agree on what stores to venture to so we can make it a fun adventure. From an outlet store to Rodeo Drive, I can find the look they want at the price they desire. I also like to take a few pictures of them in new outfits to show them what their potential can really be.

HW: What are your favorite moments in styling? LK: I recently styled a mother of six in Paris who had

lost the taste for taking care of herself. I showed her that it was possible to be dressed really casual and still be and feel feminine. I don’t promise people that I am going to transform them into a model. But I do show them their positives. How they can make their hair look six different ways or some easy things to wear when going to the grocery store. Then there was Julia: A 34 year-old scientist so busy with work and study that she had no idea what to do. We worked on her potential and made some changes…shopping sessions, hairstylist, etc. She said, “I love this style you showed me Linda, but always thought it wasn’t for me.” She was developing her confidence right before my eyes. She started to walk different…even

LINDA KHENE smile different. I was honored to witness her self-esteem changing over the course of a day. Her mother didn’t even recognize her when she showed up to pick her up. It was such a joy to experience. After that I styled a math teacher named Mikael. He was overweight as a kid and still saw himself that way when I met him. He would dress like a teenager and I showed him how to dress for the job. He gained confidence, which he needed to relate better to his students. He wore his new outfits to class and his students noticed! They complimented him over and over.

HW: Are you working on anything exciting right now? LK: I just wrapped two exciting projects actually. I

received a call from the CEO at Monster Piece in France. He is opening an LA office soon and he was looking for me to cast and style every day people. The challenge was to make them look consistent with the brand, which is street wear fashion. I also did a cover shoot for an up-andcoming French actress, which has led to some more exciting upcoming opportunities.

HW: Do you adjust your style when in Los Angeles? LK: The city here is so intertwined with the entertainment

industry that people have to pay a lot of attention to their image. I like to bring to them an elegance, sophistication, you know, that French Touch. I like to call it French’it up! Although I say this, I am not pushing anything avant-garde on anyone. The client must be comfortable with the look. If they are comfortable, then they trust me. Trust is important to me.
