For more than 10 years, passion has driven Banneker Watches CEO Derrick Holmes to deliver classic timepieces and share the story of pioneering African-American clockmaker and scientist Benjamin Banneker. Over the past few months, the Denver businessman returned to his musical roots to create a new timeless classic – a love song for the ages. HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY 17
Ne’Vaeh Holmes
“ we have to keep a close eye on my God Niece Ne’Vaeh Holmes – she could be our future Beyoncé; that kid can sing,” – WILLIAMS
Holmes teamed up with multi-Grammy nominated producer and multi-platinum composer and songwriter Herb Middleton and Motown legend and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Otis Williams, the last original surviving member of The Temptations to record “It’s Time for Love”. The single, which will be released on January 1, 2016, is a gentle rallying call for people to come together and love each other. “It was great working with Herb Middleton. He is a great talent. And it was fun seeing D-Man [his nickname for Holmes] hit those notes and bring his special sound to this song. And we have to keep a close eye on my God Niece Ne’Vaeh Holmes – she could be our future Beyoncé; that kid can sing,” said Williams. Middleton shared that positive experience. “To record this was a legendary experience with Mr. Williams and then having this vocal presence with Derrick singing this song was great,” he said. Middleton, who wrote the lyrics to It’s Time for Love, has been a musician since childhood and began his songwriting career under the mentorship of Emmy award-winning musical director and composer Loris Holland. The CEO of NuVybe Records in Philadelphia, Middleton has written and produced for such artists as Bobby Brown, Sean “Puffy” Combs, Mary J, Al Green, Usher, Raheem DeVaughn, Faith Evans, and the late Teddy Pendergrass. The music producer and Holmes were introduced by phone through mutual friend Warren Wortham of Waterloo, Iowa. “Derrick sung to me, and listening to him and hearing him talk blew me away. His story and Banneker’s story was cool. Plus, he has a range from high alto, maybe even higher with falsetto, down to a bass that rumbles,” Middleton explained. Holmes also pulled Williams, who is the Chief Ambassador for the Banneker brand and a loyal customer, into the project. Still performing at 74 years old, more than 50 years after founding
18 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
The Temptations, Williams recorded a spoken introduction over the song’s entrance. “We’re in the sound engineer’s booth and we heard this voice talking and I’m listening to what he’s saying – I was literally fighting back tears. The way he sounded, it went right to the heart. It was a historical moment, one of those moments that can’t ever be duplicated. It was spontaneous. I love spontaneity as a producer – those moments you don’t plan for, where the artists sing from or talk from their soul. It generates reality,” Middleton said. Holmes was just as blown away. “We looked at each other and were like, ‘Did we just experience that?’ It shows how Otis was really doing music before we were born. His microphone cred just kicked in. For him it was like nothing;
Otis Williams and Derrick Holmes for us it was like boom. Watching Herb, too, I thought about how many people he’s worked with and what a musical genius he is. So for him to be so visually touched by it said a lot,” Holmes recalled.
Middleton explained, “The song promotes Banneker Watches and Derrick’s gift but more than that it has a message, which is something I believe in very strongly and the world needs to be conscious of: the need to love.”
The watch designer has always loved music, and sang in groups in high school and college, making money singing at parties and weddings. He also wrote and sang commercial jingles for his advertising company, but has concentrated on promoting Banneker for the past decade. When he had the epiphany to create a song for his watch company, he realized he could return to his early love of singing, and the song could have deeper meaning.
“The song deserves attention. It could stand the test of time. It’s not a song created on a whim just for today. The message that it represents is timeless,” he added.
Williams agreed. ”This song is more than a song – it is a call, and a cry for change. it should be the world’s new mission,” he said.
Reality inspired his lyric writing, as he reflected on life in America today. “I want my children and grandchildren to grow up in a world where they won’t have to fear for their lives. Why do we have to fear for our lives? I understand being angry, but murdering people comes so easy these days. I can’t make it any simpler – look at what we are doing to one another,” he implored.

While the elder statesman, Williams, starts out the song, the ending is graced by the sweet voice of Holmes’ 7-year-old daughter, Ne’Vaeh. “There’s nothing like the love between a father and daughter. I wanted to leave listeners with that and send that message of love out,” Middleton explained.
Editor’s note:
He concluded, “My hopes for the song are that people tie into this brilliant brand of watch wear, that people really see this product and start to read into the history, not just of Benjamin Banneker but also Derrick Holmes, who to me is a hero with a really special mission. I hope that people buy into the idea that it is time for love and we see unity displayed among people.”

Sweden In 2013 the Swedish entrepreneur Christian Bergenstråhle met the artist Catrine Näsmark. He fell in love with her paintings but realized that the price for each piece was quite high for many people. His inital thought waas – it should be possible to make expensive art more accessible without losing the quality. This is how his new art concept ”plexiographies” was born… A plexiography is a reproduction of an established artist / photographer’s original piece printed on plexiglass in a limited edition. Plexiographies is a high quality product – it’s not IKEA but not high end gallery art either. It’s a way to offer art in a way so people can enjoy expensive art for an affordable price. ”We really care about the finish to make sure it is a high quality product, says Christian Bergenstråhle. The way of printing makes it possible to see the art from both sides and it’s also possible to illuminate the plexiography from behind.” XIKO ART is today representing 10 artists and 8 photographers. Most of them from Sweden but XIKO also have one Hong Kong based artist, Francesco Lietti, one American photographer, Fredric Keith Reshew and one just signed American artist; George Wilkinson III. The ambition is to grow internationally through creative collaborations and by finding creative artists in different parts of the world.
Marketing through collaborations XIKO ART is always thinking in a creative way when it comes to marketing and collaborations. One of the more unique collaborations since the start in 2013 is the one XIKO started with Project Red Card and Maria Vascsak Agency. Project Red Card is unique in itself so this made it a perfect match. Christian Bergenstråhle, Founder XIKO ART
The future is about thinking
in a new way… xikoart.com
A plexiography comes in limited edition and with a certificate of authenticity that says what number in the series it has and signed by the artist. The plexiography is offered in four different sizes and options in the form of drilled holes and mounting device (spacers or adhesive mounts). XIKO ART ship Worldwide. 32 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

there. Art can be used in many ways people never thought of” Christian Bergenstråhle
”As a small company thinking untraditionally it’s fun to collaborate with other people doing the same. Maria Vascsak and her project RED CARD was a creative way to expose plexiographies in a new setting, says Christian Bergenstråhle” The collaboration has several dimensions – a plexiography by Martina Swedmark is exposed in the promotion trailer of Red Card. It sounds like a regular product placement but it’s rather a collaboration where Maria Vascsak Agency will be profiting on sales of this particular plexiography during 12 months from launch date of the trailer. A copy of the plexiography is also the first price in a movie competition hosted by Maria Vascsak Agency. If the collaboration will lead to a good result the companies are definitly willing to to collaborate more. In the beginning of 2016 XIKO ART will start a new collaboration on the US market. Then it’s time for another exciting project together with the Swedish coffee chain FIKA, with 19 locations in New York.
ART does not have to be seen as a cost A unique way of working as a gallery is that XIKO help companies who want to purchase art with creative concepts how
they can actually earn money on art – rather than just seeing it as a cost. A hotel in Stockholm who just recently ordered art to decorate the rooms got a proposal on how to see art as a potential income. They used their own photographer and the idea is that all art will be able to purchase/order in different sizes. The profit that the hotel makes can be used for employer branding, for ways to motivate and/or educate staff. This will also give the staff something extra to talk to the guests about. Also a car company received a unique proposal using art as a way to reach the goal on increasing the amount of people coming in to test drive a new model.

Still from “Fair Play” by Alexander Wallen
What was it that made you enter the Project Red Card film scene competition? “The outline for the competition was very open and I felt that the movie I was working on at the time was perfect for a submission. It’s about a man at the peak of his career hitting rock bottom, a public hero living a dual life, plagued by fear and shame. I felt very creative working on ”Fair Play”. The entire cast was involved in the creative process. I’m constantly keeping myself busy and have exciting projects coming up”. During his first years in Los Angeles he acted in low-budget short films, took acting classes, spent a lot of time at the gym and paid his rent. In the spring of 2014, he began training at LACC Theatre Academy where he is still enrolled. In the fall of 2015 Alexander had the honor of playing ”Scanlon” in the ”Dale Wasserman” play ”One Flew Over The Cucko’s Nest. He did seven sold-out shows at the LACC Theatre Academy. Almost dying in a serious car crash in Los Angeles in May this year has made him enjoy life in the
moment, which he also applies when acting and filmmaking. His journey into arts began with the cello, but about seven years ago he read Marlon Brando’s biography which had a profound effect on Alexander. ”I have always wanted to act, but the book made me want to be a more diverse artist.”

Nat Turner: Following Faith” There were over 20 slave revolts in North America, but it was the one led by Nat Turner (1800-1831) that may be the most famed and that has left its imprint on the American imagination. In August, 1831, Turner’s band of sixty Blacks slew fifty whites, men, women and children, during the brief rebellion. In retaliation, whites subsequently killed 200 Blacks, both slaves and free men. Turner was literate, articulate, an orator and a charismatic leader. What drove Nat Turner to take this form of direct, violent action against his oppressors, especially while he may have instinctively deplored extreme violence himself? The answer lies in the institution of slavery itself. The brutalities, the beatings, the rapes, the separations of families, the broken promises, the daily affronts year after year----the accumulation

of all these indignities aggregate in a wave of forces that impel Turner to take the path he chooses, that indeed, he may have seen violent revolt as the obvious course of action. Playwright Paula Neiman, in Nat Turner: Following Faith, distinguishes her account from other accounts of Turner by making plain that it is the bitterness of slavery itself that drives him to his actions. Gabriel Prosser, a predecessor abolitionist and insurrectionist (whom Turner never actually met) is suggested as a possible inspiration, and appears as an onstage narrator. Turner quotes the Bible several times. But it is Slavery itself that ignites revolution, and it is Slavery that Turner is driven to expunge.
