ollywood has always been known for its glitz and glamor, the ability for actors and directors to enrapture us in fantastical escapes from the realities of the world. But occasionally the purpose of a film is to keep us present in the reality of those subjects we often seek to escape or gain solace from; Director/Producer
Stanley Kramer is a name that we deeply associate with this. There have been times throughout the history of Hollywood film-making and movie producing when the passionate, focused vision of a single voice reaches and touches the lives of many sparking controversy, awareness, connection and community. Among those who can be included (and in many’s eyes, the only name on that list)...the great Stanley Kramer (1913-2001).
biggest names and media, Kat and Karen are pioneering the next wave of provocative cinematic expression. Among the many dedicated supporters, Lily Tomlin has been actively involved in three world premieres for “Kat Kramer’s FTCTW” tackling three important issues: elephants in captivity, bullying/ violence in America’s schools and homophobia, as well as nuclear holocaust. She is the only celebrity activist to have hosted and participated in interviews promoting the movement, as well as being a primary speaker during the opening introductions for Kat’s film series. Also, being a longtime friend of Dr. Helen Caldicott, Lily gave the introductory speech for her at the “Fallout” screening.

Stanley Kramer dedicated his life and career to raising social awareness on global scales relating to matters that apply to everyone; from racism to fascism and everything in between -but rarely do we see such passionate dedication live on beyond the grave. That’s why it has been such a pleasure and an honor to watch the unfolding of a new era continuing the legacy of the late Stanley Kramer through the vision of his daughter Kat and surviving wife, Karen Sharpe Kramer. Together and in conjunction with “Kat Kramer’s Films That Change The World” film series, the resurrection of Stanley Kramer’s vision is realized. The “Kat Kramer’s Films That Change The World” (FTCTW) franchise is in its fifth segment, showcasing a wide array of socially aware films and documentaries. innovative collaboration melding new and nostalgia was born. The documentary “Fallout” by Australian filmmaker Lawrence Johnston (relating to our use and dependence on nuclear energy and weaponry) was premiered paired with the making of Stanley Kramer’s original “On The Beach”. Following the movie, celebrity panelists took to the stage to discuss the relevance of these two movies in relation to each other as well as the topic of nuclear disarmament, dangers, expanding awareness and potential resolution. The celebrity panel, which was moderated by Kat Kramer, included (in order of appearance); Kat Kramer (actor/ singer/producer/journalist), Rick Overton (screenwriter/actor/ comedian), Ric O’Barry (activist/appearance in “The Cove”), Lou Gossett Jr. (Actor), Karen Sharpe Kramer (actor/model/
producer), Dr. Helen Caldicott (physician/author/anti-nuclear advocate), Lily Tomlin (actor/comedian/writer/producer), Heather Mayfield (daughter of On The Beach novelist Nevil Shute) and Donna Anderson (actor). Donna Anderson made her screen debut in “On The Beach” and later played a pivotal role in Stanley Kramer’s “Inherit”. Friends of the Kramer Family Legacy that were in attendance included Lois Aldrin, George Chakiris, Marsha Hunt, Jerry Mathers, Beverly Todd, Mark Rydell, Glynn Turman, Mark Russell, Charles Shaughnessy & Susan Fallender Schaughnessy, Wayne Jobson, Lila Garrett, Ian Masters, Christy Oldham, Arnold Schwartzman & Isolde Schwartzman, Jason Cozier and Trinity Marquez.

This is 5th installment of “Kat Kramer’s FTCTW” featuring “Fallout”; a documentary focusing on Nuclear War and the real-time and real world dangers which also includes discussions about Stanley Kramer’s film “On The Beach” (1959) and Nevil Shute, author of same titled novel (1957). Keeping in line with the other movies she has previously screened for her cinema series; titles include: 1. Barbra Streisand’s “Yentl,” 2.”The Cove”, 3. “Elephants And Man: A Litany Of Tragedy, and 4. “Teach Your Children Well”, “Fallout’s” relevance to current global events unite and activate the human side in us all and attempt to serve as a reminder of our humanity and the necessity to make better decisions for our current and future generations. Jenni Gold’s “CinemAbility”, is the 6th movie in the series and will be featured in 2014; confirmation of the film screening date and location to be determined. This film addresses how characters with disabilities have been depicted in film over the past few decades
and includes scenes from two of Stanley Kramer’s movies, “The Men” and “Ship Of Fools.” Narrated by actress Jane Seymour and with appearances by Jane Fonda, Jamie Foxx, Jon Voight and William H. Macy, “CinemAbility” is not to be missed. Dr. Caldicott is considered the authority on nuclear disarmament, anti-nuclear advocacy and awareness. She advised President Reagan during the Cold War and continues to travel and teach based on her years’ experience, professional training and research, in conjunction with writing her many books: The New Nuclear Danger, If you Love This Planet, Loving This Planet & A Desperate Passion (her autobiography), to list a few. Dr. Caldicott was quoted as saying she believes “Kat Kramer is doing fantastic work and I think Stanley Kramer was a prophet
and his work is incredibly important and should be kept for the public [eye], but particularly ‘On The Beach’, which is now even more relevant than when he made it. We’re in more danger. The Cold War has become Hot; no one knows about it. We’re all
practicing psychic numbing, the media is ignoring it and I’ve said we’re walking like lemmings toward the cliff of nuclear annihilation without even knowing or understanding…so, what Kat’s doing is excellent.” The 1st Annual Stanley Kramer’s Film Festival in Palm Springs, CA was launched on November 15-17, 2013 at the Camelot Theatre in remembrance of the great work and active voice that he strived to maintain throughout his life and on until his passing. Director Randal Kleiser was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the festival and emerging filmmaker Del Shores was in attendance. The Festival is established by Michael C. Green of The Palm Springs Cultural Arts Center, Janie Hughes of The
Palm Springs Walk-Of-Stars and sponsored by Ric & Rozene Supple. In 2014, Stanley Kramer will receive a posthumous “Star” on the Palm Springs Walk-Of-Stars, which he will be honored with over the March 19-23 weekend. The Andreas Hotel and Spa (andreashotel.com) in Palm Springs is establishing a new ‘Mad World’ inspired suite. 2013 marks the 50th Anniversary of “It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World”, and considering most of the comedy classic was filmed in Palm Springs, this was a perfect venue for the inaugural launch of this Film Festival. Be prepared for more upcoming events in the near future from the Stanley Kramer Legacy. Production on a film in which Kat Kramer will be acting and co-producing has begun. In 2014, she will launch her new one-woman show titled “My Duet With Mick,” tentative date is March 19-23, 2014, location TBD. As for Karen Sharpe Kramer, she continues to oversee the Stanley Kramer Library and is actively involved with “Kat Kramer’s FTCTW.” She and Kat are celebrating 100 years of inspiration with The Stanley Kramer Centennial Collection at The Filmmakers’ Gallery (www.thefilmmakersgallery.com). Opening reception is Saturday, December 14, 2013 and the exhibit will continue through January 31, 2014. uckle your seat belts and get ready for the ride of your life. High energy, quick witted, charming, and undeniably talented LA based musical act ‘The Shakers’ prepares as they get ready to hit the stage once again for an exhilarating performance. If you have never heard of them, where have you been hibernating? Often compared to where’ ACDC meets the Supremes’, The Shakers are anything but ‘ordinary’. The band consists of: Jodie Schell (lead singer), Chris Lee (guitarist), Nick Woods (drummer), and Kyle Kozlowski (bassist) all having that remarkable charm and incredible talent. Hollywood Weekly Magazine had the pleasure of speaking with Jodie Schell of ‘The Shakers’ to

discuss: their latest album, their quirks, and just why everyone is in love with The Shakers. The following has been edited for continuity purposes. Meagan Sargent: How did the band originate? Jodie Schell: Chris Lee was a Philly musician who packed up and moved to LA in 2009. Our mutual friends had already started grooming me to step up my own music-career choices (write more, be a LEAD singer instead of a back up singer) when they brought Chris to my punk band’s show at The Roxy. The story goes that when he saw me smash my tambourine onstage, he immediately decided I’d be the lead singer of his project THE SHAKERS.
Sargent: Meaning behind the band name.
We fit all four of us in a Honda Element, with gear, merch and pajamas, and we travel the NATION with JUST. Maybe that’s where the classic rock mentality comes in, because we’re road warriors and there’s no other noise except guitar, drums, bass, and voice.
Schell: It was a suggestion from the early stages of the band back on the east coast. Chris loved how it evoked so much excitement and movement. We worried the name was used before but he promised to trademark it - which finalized in 2011. Also, there are Performing is everything I’ll ever spooky coincidences, I have want or need in my lifetime. It’s found, between our band and other organizations called better than money. Especially ‘shakers’. I think it’s an omen.
Sargent: Your newest album is called ‘Rescue Team’, what is the album about?
Schell: Rescue Team encapsulates everything the band has gone when the words are lyrics from through since our 2011 release OH Sargent: Describe your LOUD. OH SO LOUD was such my own poems and confessions. It SO sound and how are ‘The a celebration of finding eachother will just never ever get old. Shakers’ different from and feeling inpenetrable. RESCUE similar musical acts? TEAM is what happened when we went out to take on the world. It got messy, and I can explain why I ‘think’ we started to be described as challenging, and scary at times. But we were there ACDC meets the Supremes. Well Chris Lee’s melodic for eachother so we made it. I think we even pushed rock background is also rooted in the soulful music eachother further creatively, and I’m BEYOND excited history of Philly. And though I felt like I graduated by the results. from punk rock bootcamp in my first steps as an LA musician, my roots are in Detroit’s motown sensibilities. Sargent: If you could do a future collaboration I think Nick Woods’ style of drumming has taken that with anyone/band who would it be? hybrid into an even tastier and unique direction, since Schell: We have a few heroes. I think Queens of his roots are jazz and progressive rock. I guess what the Stone Age, Foo Fighters, Rush, and Heart are make us different from other musical acts is because our living icons. Meeting them, opening up for them, we create this ruckus in the most simple/basic form.

collaborating,... even massaging their feet would be fine for us. Couple mimosas... a lil pool party... I think I’d give Ann Wilson a wicked good foot massage. Maybe a bonus hair braiding sesh’ Sargent: What’s it like being on stage and performing in front of a crowd that is rocking out and yelling the words right back at you. Schell: It’s everything I’ll ever want or need in my lifetime. It’s better than money. Especially when the words are lyrics from my own poems and confessions. It will just never ever get old. Sargent: To me, I think it is really important for a band/ artist to connect with it’s audience. Would you agree? How so? And how do you feel you guys as a group do this? Schell: Audiences are smart. You can’t force it. They connect with you, and when you’ve earned that, it’s your responsibility to keep it. You have to go to their hometown, you have to give them an EXPERIENCE. As our audience continues to expand in number and in the amount of states, it gets harder and harder to do this as a 4 man team. I can’t wait for help. But in the meantime, the internet allows you to reach any fan at any time, and they can reach you. That’s not a burden. That’s a gift. Sargent: Describe the relationship with your band mates. Schell: I am very lucky. We have to work really hard together to maintain the momentum building since 2009, but we each juggle day jobs on top of it. Barely

anyone gets any sleep. So once we are all in the car on our way to a show, it’s such a fantastic relief!!!! We don’t talk too much about road shenanigans because they’re just kinda dorky. I love it, though. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Sargent: Character traits? (ie: jodie is the silly one, nick is the serious one, etc) Schell: Chris Lee is the ringleader. Even when he isn’t trying to command, we all look to him quite a bit. Nick Woods is the friendliest. He’ll complain the least, but he’s also insatiable which earned him the nick name: The Honey Mustard Badger. Kyle Kozlowski is my back seat buddy. He’s unapologetically diplomatic, and he’ll either be bouncing off the walls in the car or sitting quietly with a book. There’s no inbetween. We’re so grateful he joined the band last fall. As for me, they sarcastically accuse me of being highmaintanence - because I’m really not. I’m low key and pretty comfortable as a whipping post. But they started calling me Tallcock last year. I think it’s because I’ve been pushed too far on a couple of occasions, and my bandmates know the other side of my politeness ;) Sargent: What’s the writing process like? Do you all write together? Schell: Some songs are written front to back by Chris Lee, but the majority of the songs start at rehearsal. The guys will let out some steam during a break by just playing with a hook or riff or fill. If something catches, we record it and email it out so everyone can brainstorm directions for the song to go. It’s very collaborative. Sargent: Most touching thing a fan has done, thus far?
Sama ntha Barro ws Lala Land Rock nroll Phot ogra phy
Schell: We recently had an indiegogo campaign called “Join The Rescue Team” for help funding the recording, production, and marketing fo the album. The outpouring of support was overwhelming and we’ll never forget it. Sargent: Any traditions you all have before taking the stage. Schell: I like the shows where we have a group irish car-bomb. Haha. Those have become more and more rare as the shows grow. But if it’s a big show we huddle and bring as much energy towards eachother as possible. We also have to remind eachother of all the special quirks we added to the set. Sargent: Random fact no one knows about the band? Schell: Nick Woods was in a Sunny D commercial as a kid!! How cute is THAT?
Sargent: What’s next? Schell: Travelling!!! Once Rescue Team is in our hands, we’re distributing it ourselves! Going to all our favorite places in Cali, Utah, AZ, the east coast and BEYOND! We’ve also already started writing new songs for the next album. Every new song breathes life into another facet of the band’s talent and history, and it’s so incredible. I can’t wait for what happens next, too. Be sure to catch them live in action and they are one group you never want to miss! Music and Art for The World
Jimmy D Robinson written by Jim Strzalkowski
18 - HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
I
n a landscape of over-produced and super-hyped so-called “artistes,” one man, with a rich history, forges his way through the entertainment world. When one is a real “artiste” they do not need to continually remind their fans that they are artistic. True artists let the work they produce and create speak for itself, allowing their public to arrive at their own interpretations. One such humble artistic icon in the areas of music, poetry and fine art is Florida based Jimmy D Robinson. Long before Lady Gaga decided to call herself an “artiste” and go “ARTPOP,” Robinson was referred to as the modern day Andy Warhol with his eccentric, eclectic and pioneering artistic manner. Robinson submerges his audiences’ souls with complete amalgamation of his art through visuals, positive messages and musical sounds, while his subjects partake in the physical movements of dance. Jimmy D Robinson is a native of West Palm Beach and often refers to himself as a “Crazy Piece of Art” He has many fans around the world for his work as a visionary poet, lyricist, recording artist, musician, producer, art dealer, successful entrepreneur and activist. Truth-be-told, Robinson does not live for the applause, unlike Lady Gaga, although he inspires enormous hand clapping and accolades. Robinson is the son of a single mom who waited tables to support the family. This modest upbringing, pushed him to rely on his creativity to dream big. His grandmother taught young Robinson to write poetry and also exposed him to the World of Art, local music and dance. Imagination was valued as essential to living. During his early teen years, Robinson’s passion became the NYC disco scene. Unable to find himself artistically, Robinson, struggled to identify his path in life. Ultimately, Robinson found himself back in West Palm Beach, Florida, experiencing a period of homelessness, drug abuse, and hopelessness throughout his early years . Even in dire straits with an uncertain fate, his powerful creative talent inside his soul begged to be unleashed. While destitute, Robinson began penning abstract poems on scraps of paper or anything he could find. He would gaze at the moon, the stars, the clouds, the sun, searching for anything that would give him hope-hope to live, to overcome, and to triumph. The poetry he began to write saved Robinson’s life. Gradually, he found the more he wrote, the better he felt and the better his life got. Once he gained serenity through a clean lifestyle, Robinson was introduced to the Contemporary Art World. Today he specializes in brokering large collections of art as well as multi-million dollar paintings to elite and private clientele, luxury hotels and corporate offices worldwide after establishing is own firm Jimmy D Robinson, Inc. Robinson’s self-published works have earned him a sterling reputation in the world of media. Widely recognized as one of today’s most prolific writers, Robinson’s poems, musical stories, and lyrics reflect the hardships he has endured and the joys of overcoming them. Penning his words with stark reality-writing of the human condition-loneliness, love, desperation, and hope, Robinson uses his craft to convey his celebration of life.
MIND JUICE, also the first book in Robinson’s poetry arsenal. From the MIND JUICE CD sprang Robinson’s first international chart hit titled, “A Tiny Shoe,” which went to #6 on the Billboard Club Play chart and #7 on the UK Music Week chart. Establishing his record label, J Music Group became the next rung on Robinson’s artistic ladder. As a record label executive and producer/songwriter, he does not worry about star meter or current pop culture relevance. He works with talent he is attracted to artistically for each song and project. With a current label roster that includes iconic singers like Melba Moore, Carol Jiani and CEEVOX, Robinson is holding the reigns as an underground club music impresario. It wasn’t long before Jimmy D Robinson stepped up to the microphone himself and recorded the single “One More Chance,” which features stunning vocals of music legend Melba Moore. With more than six U.S. Billboard and U.K. Music Weekly top-ten chart hits already under his belt, Robinson’s venture into the music world has been a stroke of creative genius and luck. Recently, Robinson, put his entire J Music Group aka Jimmyland Corporation publishing catalog on the market for sale with a price tag of $35 Million. With over 44 fulllength CDs and over 277 musical tracks, Robinson’s body of work is considered a coveted “tour de force” in the dance music world. The catalog also includes many dubs and instrumental tracks that can be licensed to film, television and new media. Today, Jimmy D Robinson is grateful for his life and is thankful he weathered the many storms of his past to arrive at where he is today. His next poetry book entitled “Electric Blue” will be out early 2014 and will also be transformed into new music featuring legendary singers to be announced soon. Interior Designer Maria Samuels Offers Tips To Add Festive Holiday Cheer To Your Home This Season
J
ust because you can already hear the sleigh bells doesn’t mean you don’t have time to prep. The below do it yourself tips and tricks as well as some fun mani ideas will ensure you are jet set and ready for a fun and festive holiday!
Through her experience in researching trends for InStyleModern.com and through being a holiday decor fanatic herself, Interior Design Guru Maria Samuels, has tried and true tips on nontraditional and creative ways to decorate your home for the season: The best part about the holidays is seeing the different decorations around the neighborhood and seeing how creative everyone can get. Skip the icicle lights and include some nontraditional cheer that will soon be your next years’ tradition. First and foremost ‘think outside the tree’ and use only what you truly want to use. You can stock up on the garlands and fill those with lights if your home is too small for a tree, or if you simply can’t stand the mess. Don’t just stop in living room, spread the cheer throughout your household! This year keeping it all white, which delivers a chic and sophisticated look, is the trend! Make it a family affair! Go natural and involved the kids by making your own decorations! Stock up on pine cones, nuts,, and other fun trinkets that nature provides! Make it a fun evening for the kiddos by letting them make their own ornaments or fun decorations such as a snowman centerpiece, a star, wreath, or Santa drawings and/or cutouts!

Last but not least have fun and find a color that fits you! Traditional ‘Christmas Colors’ are a thing of the past as everyone currently uses colors such as: purple, gold, silver, pink, and brown to decorate and accent their home. Having a holly jolly holiday doesn’t have to stop at the holidays. We want to make sure you are at your best and with the below nail trends and ideas from Katie Saxton, you are sure to stand out! Ranging from simple glam to ultimate festival pro these looks cater something for everyone. One of our simple favorites is ‘Gleeful Glitter’ nails. Simply get the Christmas ‘staple’ colors such as green, red, or gold and complete the look by adding a coat of glitter nail polish! For the ultimate ‘Christmas Morning’ mani try the ‘Pretty Presents Mani ’.
Make sure your nails are like cheerful little holiday gifts this season! To do this mani, have on-hand red polish, green polish, purple polish, gold polish, and silver polish. Paint each nail either red, green, or purple, alternating the colors for each nail.
