The Audacity To Reinvent Your Life There is a saying “bad things always happen to good people.” For some of us there comes moments in our lives where it seems that all the walls have caved in and there is nothing to look forward to. I believe it’s in these moments of true chaos and fear that we discover the person we are going to be, the person we were meant to be. I then begin to wonder are these “bad things” happening to these “good people” to guide them or to help them be the best version of themselves? Valerie Grandury was born in France where she lived until 2000 when she moved to Los Angeles, to open the US office of her successful film production company. In 2004 Valerie was diagnosed with breast cancer. Here she found herself facing the walls caving in. She had a choice “fight and flight”… or “crumble and surrender”? After receiving a dreadful prognostic, Valerie turned to inner reflection and realized that something in her life wasn’t right and she had to find a way to make it right. This is where her quest to reinvent her life began. She created a battle plan against her disease through a complete detoxification of her environment. Starting with selling her house in the polluted Hollywood Hills, along with her production company. She was now on the path to begin a healing journey to healing her life. Grandury turned to the therapeutic power of plants, started meditating and practicing yoga. In conjunction with this she adopted a raw food diet and became a Health and Wellness coach. One day after reading about the campaign for safe cosmetics, Valerie discovered with shock something she never had suspected: the high toxicity in most skin care products. Some even being “cocktails” of dangerous known carcinogens! Obviously this led her to turn to “organic” skin care products, but this too let her down when she discovered that the products she was buying did not have manufacturing dates. How could natural ingredients retain any active properties after so many years in a jar? If a fresh, organic product sits for more than six months it will loose all the good qualities it once contained. Valerie Grandury began making her own skin care products, sourcing only the freshest ingredients. She even surprised herself by the difference she was seeing in her skin. Naturally her friends began wondering what she was using, and how they could get their hands on it. Not

Valerie Grandury and Romain Gaillard, Founder and Co-Founder of Odacité Freshly made skin care products
to their surprise did they discover that Valerie was the catalyst behind her glowing skin. Quickly, they all started taking part in Valerie’s at home skin products. Valerie began developing these products on a regular basis for friends and some private clientele. Then Valerie’s long time friend Romain Gaillard convinced her that everything that happened to her was for a reason. That she had something truly unique to share with the world, he said to her “all you need is the audacity to do it!” She took his advice (quite literally) Valerie Romain partnered and odacité was born. Today odacité ships their fresh products all over the world. What is truly unique about Odacité is that you will NEVER find it at stores; this is because most major stores require that each product that is brought in is to have a shelf life of two years. How is an organic product supposed to be helpful to your skin if it’s been sitting around for two years? With odacité you get the creator of the revolutionary “Freshiency™System.” Each product is made fresh for you, dated and then immediately shipped to your door, personally guarantying that each ingredient remains 100% active. In fact when I ordered my products, I was pleasantly surprised to see them at my door the very next day. The package was absolutely beautiful each product individually wrapped in white silk paper. The bottle and the jars so elegant... I could already feel the special care. But my real surprise was when I tried the products, they are truly out of this world. I am really skeptical when it comes to skincare but this is really different. My skin felt alive and some of my friends even asked me what I did. When I am choosing my skin care products, I am usually someone who chooses based on what sort of gimmicky label they have on the front that is promising me some sort of outrageous result in some sort of outrageous time frame. Well let me tell you something, quite literally the week before I started learning about odacité
Freshly made skin care and using it, my skin was a mess. I was a 25 year old with the skin of 15-year-old boy. I came to discover that it was a combo of my makeup and skin care products, which were irritating my skin and clogging my pores… resulting in… well you get the picture. So I thought what the heck dacité a whirl. I kid you and gave odacité not, after two…maybe two and half days I noticed a huge difference in my skin. As if my skin cells were recognising the healing power of the products, deeply absorbing all the fresh active ingredients…. It all made sense to me, the freshness, the natural ingredients, no toxins, my skin finally started to breathe and gain nutrients. All I was doing before day in and day out was putting toxins all over my face. I tend to be an obsessive person when it comes to getting on to “new” things, so when I began my skin craze my fiancé thought, “o gosh what has she fallen into now”. But odacité even converted him; he fights me for the products now as we both have seen a difference. The skin care ritual is morning and night cleanse with the gentle cleanser, apply a few drops of eye cream morning and night. Then apply the day moisturizer in the morning and at night apply the night serum. This is most important because the skin goes into repair mode at night. Where it gets rid of toxins, so if you put on “oily” moisturizers the toxins will stick to those oils and go back into the skin. once or twice a week use the exfoliant and Masque. I have to say that I am a huge fan of the exfoliant. After you use it, it feels that you have a brand new skin. The products are designed for all ages and as my fiancé proved all genders. As well as all skin types, in fact it is especially good for those with sensitive skin and is
Each product is dated to guarantee the freshness formulated to be anti aging. odacité specializes in delivering amazing results without the toxicity. Why is the toxicity bad? Well let me tell you… According to the Academy of dermatology the two main sources of skin irritation are due to Fragrance and Preservatives. Many doctors are beginning to believe that large amounts of women are suffering from highly toxic Skin Care, some of them being directly linked to eczema, asthma, dermatitis and cancer. In 2004 a study found higher than normal concentrations of Parabens in human breast tumor tissue. Today most of the products you see on the shelves at stores are pumped with Parabens as a preservative in the skin care product. Studies are showing that Parabens have estrogen- mimicking properties and raised estrogen levels are thought to be a primary factor increasing the risk of breast cancer. Valerie, more than anyone believes in quality and freshness over anything else; as she was one to feel the direct effects of our chemically induced environment. This is why at odacité their commitment is to bring you the freshest skin care available with no toxicity, because healthy skin is beautiful skin. I can’t reiterate enough how important the freshness in organic products is; because after time the product will start loosing some of the potent vitality of each ingredient. Which is why Valerie makes sure the “Freshiency™

Date” stamp is on each product (I challenge you to find someone else who does this… they don’t… trust me I went to many Sephora’s) In this stamp there is a date that represents the date the product was manufactured and the date when the product should stop being used, because it will start to loose the active properties. (This date is usually six months) Most skin care products use water, which really has no healing properties in it. In Odacité products they use organic fresh aloe vera juice, which will go deep into the skin and hydrate. You have to be gentle with your skin if you get too aggressive it will damage it. That’s why their exfoliator is organic Jojoba beads, which are perfectly round so it does not leave little cuts on the skin. They choose their ingredients that are organically grown or Wild Crafted in remote natural areas that are far away from any pollution. The oils they use are cold pressed in order to preserve the highest content of antioxidants and vitamins. Even the best ingredients in this world age…once they age they become inactive. So no matter how much money you spend on “the best products out there,” if you don’t know the exact date it was manufactured, then you don’t know how fresh it is. Without this freshness you have nothing. I repeat you have nothing! When Valerie reinvented her health and wellness, she discovered how important it is to take care of one’s self in the entire spectrum so she applied this to when she was creating her skin care line. When you order Odacité products they come in a nice clear compact case for you to store everything in, a head band for you to tie your hair back, facial sponges to thoroughly remove your cleanser and beauty book; which includes tips on using natural ingredients in your house to make your skin look and feel better. (i.e. Avocado facemask). Aside
from all that…on each bottle are words of encouragement, love, or dedication. They explain in the guide book that comes with the product that you should pick a word each morning when you are doing your morning cleanse and let that word carry you throughout the day. Then at night, pick another word or stay with the one from the morning. It’s not just about slapping products on our face; it’s about caring for ourselves inside and out. Valerie even offers suggestions on how to turn you bathroom into your own private spa for an hour or so, emphasizing how important one’s time to themselves is. Valerie Grandury fought a powerful disease that some of us will never know and someone of us will never over come. This disease to Valerie was a wake up call for the chance to start fresh, and fortunately she is here to share her discoveries with the world. Valerie says, “ Cancer was the catalyst that allowed me to dare, explore, learn, dream and create. Odacité is a tribute to the courage of reinventing your life ” After learning of her journey to health and wellness, and the benefits of “real” skin care, I actually feel myself agreeing with her. Luckily today Valerie is five years cancer free, so we will enjoy her insight and knowledge for years to come. If you have any question about your skin’s specific needs, email skincoach@Odacité. com . And if like Valerie you are fighting cancer contact her directly valerie@Odacité.com she wants to help by offering a special discount to cancer patients. Odacité is a unique skin care line for many reasons. The largest one, I think is how much care, thought, time and dedication is put into each product, manufactured just for you and shipped just for you. It’s founded in passion, knowledge and desire for helping people all over the world rid themselves of toxins.

Born and raised in Russia, Galina first discovered her love of clothing and fashion as a young girl when spending time with her grandmother, an established dressmaker. Her grandmother saw the spark in little Galina’s eyes when she watched her create her dresses, and at that moment realized her granddaughter’s vibrant potential. She took Galina under her wing, and taught her how to sew, crochet, and create patterns. It was learning the technique from her grandmother, combined with a limitless dash of unbridled creativity, which encouraged Galina to pursue her dream of becoming a fashion designer. Galina attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in new York City, where she cultivated her love of design while finely honing her craft. Galina graduated with high honors, and shortly thereafter relocated to England where she continued her studies and started her own line, Single. Galina considers her time living and designing in England to be one of the most influential periods in her life. A line for the modern, confident, sexy, and stylish woman, Galina truly designs for a woman’s body, as she is an expert on the female form. With pieces mostly made from silk, Single dresses possess the desirable qualities of longevity, vitality, and meticulous construction. These pieces are designed to last, and are almost like wearable art; created from Galina’s passionate mind, Single dresses are acquired by women all over the world with the zest of an avid contemporary art collector. The print on every Single dress is hand-painted

Product development students going to overcome this hurdle? Is faith and hard work enough? Well, let’s take the perspective of a soon to be Entrepreneur, Arian Khatibi. I had the privilege of interviewing Arian, a very good friend of mine that I deeply respect and admire. Arian Khatibi is a 25 year old, ambitious, determined and coincidentally a recent FIdM graduate. He is into the extremes and not one to settle for what’s in between. Playing it safe or worring about what people say or think is not his approach. His style is all his own and he doesn’t seek out to fit in with all the new trends. It’s a guarantee and a bet I’m willing to make that whatever move Arian makes next in his career, people will be eager to find out who this young man is. He’s a Bay Area native but he’s already dug his roots deep in downtown LA, in the heart and soul of Southern California’s Fashion district.
Marjaneh: Tell us a little about yourself: career, hobbies, interests…etc? Arian: I am a wholesale sales rep for a clothing line called Superdry. I’m originally from the Bay Area but [I currently] reside in downtown Los Angeles. I am very spontaneous, hence, my move from the Bay to LA, at such short notice. I enjoy learning and experiencing the novelties in life, and I possess a deeprooted passion for fashion, as well as motorsports. I have a tendency to take an extreme approach to situations, such that if I intend to embark on something, I strive to excel at it all the while making a statement as I go along. Marjaneh: What does your current job entail? Arian: Basically, my job is to generate new accounts with retail stores, maintain these accounts, and also maintain the showroom. I participate in the purchasing aspect for the upcoming seasons in the US market, which gives me the opportunity to travel for trade shows and for meetings with potential buyers. The best part about my job is that I have some say in what goes on with the whole process, which is significant in the fact that a mixture of opinions are welcome and beneficial for the growth of the company. Marjaneh: Going back just a little, what made you decide to go to FIDM? Arian: I was really miserable just taking the standard GE classes. I wasn’t passionate
about anything I was learning and I knew right away that the conventional college life was not designed for me. It wasn’t until I started helping my cousin with some of his street art adventures that I actually discovered my calling, silk screening T-shirts. I was quickly drawn to the art after attending MAGIC that year. It was that very weekend that I decided that if I was to continue with schooling, I’d opt for a field that I’m fascinated with. now that I had the “what to study” part down, the next step was “where do I go?” Since I decided to move to LA, FIdM seemed like the only logical choice. There I began studying fashion/apparel manufacturing.
I got an interview on the spot. Sometimes, opportunity doesn’t come knocking on your door, so you go out and pursue it yourself. I would tell other graduates to also be persistent and proactive. You have to act like a sponge and absorb as much information as you can. Also, plan ahead and es-
Marjaneh: In the next 5 years, what do you predict for the economy and where do you think you will be? Arian: I’m no economist, but I do predict the economy will be back to “normal” if not better than ever. You can only go up from here. As for myself? Ideally the world can witness the debut of Arian Khatibi, the creative director of a thriving brand, or I could possibly take ownership of my own company in this competitive apparel industry.
Marjaneh: Did you find after attending FIDM that many more opportunities came your way? Arian: In a way, yes. FIdM taught me how to apply my creativity and my natural business senses to start my own career. I learned how the industry really works in regards to a real-world setting, so once I graduated it was an easy transition. I also met a great deal of influential people in the industry who helped steer me in the right direction. Marjaneh: That’s wonderful! How did you get a job so fast after graduating? What advice could you give to others trying to get into a career like yours? Arian: Well, like most of my generation, I happened to graduate in the worst economy ever. I tried finding a job for a long time and I never got a quick response back, but I remained persistent and eager. I landed this particular position by randomly walking into the showroom and asking for a job.
Arian: I want to express myself in my own work and inspire other people to do the same. I really enjoy tailored clothing. I appreciate quality fabrics, hand-craftsmanship, and excellent fit. I would love to start my own brand and manufacturing company in the relatively near future, but I still have a lot of learning and expertise to acquire. I’m not in any rush.
tablish your connections early on. Talk to as many people as you can and when you actually go for it, do it 100% - go big or go home! Lastly, always be prepared and expect the unexpected: you never know when you’re going to be in an interview. Marjaneh: I love the way you think. After all that you’ve learned and knowing that this is the right field for you, where do you see yourself in the future? And do you have plans to start your own company or clothing line?
His outlook on the future doesn’t have a wrinkle of worry. Instead of dreading the inevitable, he opens his arms and welcomes any and every opportunity, whether it’s what he expected or not. With an attitude and spirit of an eager industrialist, Arian is always two steps ahead of himself. His back up plans, also have back up plans, and if it were up to Arian and the proper resources were readily available, he would already be on top of his game. In the years to come, I predict that with the mention of his name the reactions wouldn’t be of puzzled faces. Instead, it would be of impatient fans awaiting his next venture.

The Road To A Media Empire www.hollyscoop.com

our years ago, three young LA girls had a dream to break into the entertainment news industry, but with the world saturated with media giants and thousands of eager hopefuls looking for a way in, the road ahead of them seemed long and laborious. That was no deterrent for Diana Madison, Ani Esmailian and Nora Gasparian who, while firmly believing in making their own fate, set out to launch their own entertainment news blog that would deliver showbiz news to their peers around the world. Thus Hollyscoop was born, and right out of the gates, the girl’s personalities resonated with first hundreds, then thousands, then hundreds of thousands of loyal readers from across the globe. Now followed by millions of unique worldwide visitors monthly, Hollyscoop has grown into a loved and trusted source by both the readers and the celebrities alike. Together with CEO, Raymond Attipa, the girls quickly realized that the key to their success would lie in delivering up-to the minute hot dish, while staying friendly, accurate and out of the gutter, as well as keeping ahead of the pack and taking advantage of all of the innovations that the internet has to offer. All of this translated to one thing: work... and tons of it. “The past three years have been pretty intense for the Hollyscoop family,” said Diana. “We’ve been working around the clock to create a brand that represents us; fun, positive, edgy and entertaining. In Hollywood, it’s challenging keeping a good reputation. Somehow we’ve managed to find the secret to having celebrities trust us and fans love us. Most of our exclusives come straight from the celebrities themselves. I believe people who read our website and watch our Hollyscoop news show could see that we are just like them, fans. we are representing their interests.” Nora added, “We weren’t raised with a silver spoon in our mouths so everything we have accomplished so far is through hard work. We hear many “NO’s” in our line of work, which is why we have become more determined to reach our goals. We want to be a good influence for college graduates and make them understand that hard work does in fact pay off.” Clearly the all of the hard work has been paying off. Hollyscoop is growing in popularity daily and is often used by other international news organizations as a loved and respected news source. Hollyscoop exclusives appear in newspapers, magazines, on the radio and television around the globe. So as the Hollyscoop brand grows its grasp on the worldwide audience, it was only natural for the team to take things to the next level – Television. Hollyscoop’s long time friend and associate, talent manager and producer Phil Viardo, shared in their vision and in early 2009 he brought Hollyscoop and it’s parent company DNA Group Inc. together with Natural 9 Entertainment, an Emmywinning production company headed by Carol Sherman and Jeff Androsky. With over 20 years in the business and thousands of hours of produced television under their belt, combined with a hot new media brand and the progressive thinking of the team at Viardo Artists – all the pieces began to fall into place. Just a few short weeks after the meeting of the minds, the Hollyscoop TV Series pilot was shot in four different languages and made its debut at the 2009 MIP marketplace in Cannes, France days later. On August 30th, 2009 the Hollyscoop Show premiered on Los Angeles’ popular Tribune Media station KTLA (CW). The half our weekly series is hosted by Diana Madison and Brian Corsetti airs on Sunday nights and brings its viewers the latest in celebrity news, fashion, lifestyle, music and more in a program fueled by exclusives and unique segments that keep the fans and the Industry tuning in every week. Rounding out the on-air talent are Nora, Ani, as well as Matthew Hoffman, Bridget Daly, Chima Simone, Carly Steel and Chelsea Cannell. “It is truly an amazing process to watch the Hollyscoop brand grow and expand into the TV arena,” said Phil Viardo, the show’s Executive Producer. “With the team that we have behind the show, the sky is the limit”. The show is Co-Executive produced by Randy Blacker, Lee Campbell, Roger Cross, Laurent Planeix, and LoveLea
Film’s Kirsten Lea. Nina Ngo is the show’s fearless Talent Producer, while Viardo, Attipa, Sherman and Androsky serve as the Executive Producers. Recently, DNA Group inked a deal with Shine International, a powerhouse international distributor who is currently placing the Hollyscoop Show on TV screens around the world. Domestically, the producers expect to be on nationally by the first quarter of 2010. Domestically, the producers expect to be on nationally by the first quarter of 2010 and fully syndicated by 2011. So now busier than ever, how do the girls feel about the never-ending work? “We don’t treat our job like work,” said Ani. Rather it’s a natural extension of ourselves- we are the brand. As such we always strive to make sure our image is a reputable and hardworking one since that’s who we are. After three years with them she decided it was time to freelance. Schutter’s first movie was From Earth to the Moon with Tom Hanks. Whom she speaks very highly of, in fact she said they had a very “enlightening” conversation about sunscreen. After being invited by the Key Make-Up artist Gina LaMendolla to key second unit that was outside, Andrea consequently got to much sun resulting in a sunburn. After this film she went on to work on Mortal Combat, Forever Mine, with Ray Loitta and was continually doing projects with Universal and MGM. After having established herself in the Florida/ Hollywood Make-up scene she decided that she wanted to return to her roots and go back to Texas. In Houston she has done lots of print work, as well as working with MSNBC Hardball, the Latin Grammies, and several National Commercials. Andrea is also talented in special effects make-up .Some other quite notably credits include: Barack Obama, People Choice awards, The Superbowl, Nicole Richie and Rapper Nelly as well as work with Luminous Air Brush.
at Department stores with Lancôme and then with the make-up brand Perspective’s. It was here that she really was taught undertones in foundation and truly became a master of foundations. She was with Perspectives for over two years and then went down to Florida to study at Joe Blasco Make-up College for 3 months. After completing school she was union tested, local 798 (east coast). Shortly after she began working with the Golf Channel doing pretty much every golfer out there’s make-up
I asked her how she managed to accomplish so much with so little? I said you must have had a really motivational mentor? She informed me that she didn’t have a mentor and that she did everything on her own and had to teach herself along the way. So it’s no wonder that it is
very important for Andrea to mentor younger make-up artist and guide them in learning the right and wrong ways of doing things. She strikes me as a good mentor not only because of her skill level, but also because she is a very positive, upbeat person, that truly believes that if you follow your dreams and work hard you will achieve what you are looking for. Schutter goes on to say that it’s easier to do this with a mentor. Andrea comes from a large family with nine brothers and sisters, so as supportive as they all were it just was not economically possible for her parents to help her financially. Consequently, she had to make it on her own. Andrea Schutter doesn’t stop at make-up she is also a licensed hair - dresser (not cut and color) but styling. Saying she loves doing people’s hair because it’s more a challenge for her, make-up was something that always came natural to her. However, hair is something she had to work for. It’s hard to find make-up artists out there that do hair and do hair “well.” Andrea is walking proof that if you work hard and persevere through the hard times (which she says there was plenty of) you will walk away doing
all that you love and making a living doing it.
Do what you love and money will follow…

Loose the Damage & Find your voice By: Brea Tisdale
I am that person who will constantly sing in the shower, the car, at work, pretty much anywhere. The “problem” (as others would like to describe it) is that I’m not very good; I am never on pitch, in tune or frankly even singing the right words. But like so many of us out there (even if you don’t admit it) we really have a desire to learn how to sing, whether it be for professional gain or for the sheer joy of sounding good at the local Karaoke bar. never have I met someone that actually gave me the confidence to think, “I could be a good singer, or actually learn how to sing and be good at it.” Then I met Roger Burnley, who much to my shock, told me he doesn’t believe people are tone deaf. He believes anyone can learn to sing, where there is a will there is a way. Roger is originally from Chicago where he began his singing career in grade school at the mere age of 12. He was selected to be a member of the Chicago All City High School chorus, which was quite an honor. It was with this choir and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, that he got his first professional experience. Roger then moved to new York City where he focused on Musical Theatre as well as some opera. In 1982 he settled in Los Angeles where he continued his studies with many different vocal coaches. Roger was dealing with his own vocal issues, and through this he began developing his own training techniques and has been teaching voice since 1988. All of this really began in a unique way when a doctor in Beverly Hills,
began referring patients to Roger for rehabilitation. The doctor would send over the “problem” in medical terms (which as we all know can seem like a foreign language) so Burnley began researching each issue and worked with each patient to take care of his or her vocal issues. A lot of this understanding came from Roger’s own insecurity in his voice; he was always having problems with his voice. Regardless of all his own personal vocal success, he never really trusted his ability. He felt there was something that he wasn’t doing quite right. So he always continued to learn. It was through all this he discovered something that he was doing wrong. Something in his voice, that was never corrected, resulting in him damaging his voice. After coming to the realization that no one needed to damage their voice in order to be a professional singer, Roger began teaching others. Roger has such a talented ear that he can hear right away, when listening to his students, what the problem is in their voice. Roger has taught the likes of Macy Gray, Brandy, Ray-J, Macy Gray, Brandy, Ray J, nona Gaye (Marvin Gaye’s daughter), James Tormé (son of Mel Tormé) Adam Yauch (Beastie Boys), Eric Balfour, dee dee Warwick,

As we all know, the Internet is a massive vessel for all sorts of good or bad information. Well… Roger has tapped into the good side. He has just realized his third vocal instructional video “Roger Burnley’s Singing-MadeSimple.” But it is so much more than an instructional video; it’s a whole vocal training program; it’s one on one lessons, without having to get out of bed. For every single person that gets “Roger Burnley’s Singing-Made-Simple”, you get access to a members only site. Here you can upload questions directly to Roger, upload MP3’s and video for Roger to critique and give feedback, read Roger’s blog, and interact with other artists and users. not only that, but there are a few extras that only members get access to. The key element that I found
to make this truly unique was that you could correspond back and forth with Roger on a personal level. He doesn’t just send his training videos to you and leave you there to figure it all out by yourself. Some people heard I was writing an article about Roger and since then, I have been getting emails from complete strangers telling me how dear and special Roger is to them, and what an impact he has had on the vocal community. I’d have to say I was the most impressed with Roger and how he uses his talents, patience, the Internet and his passion to help inspire artists and individuals all over the world. LA meets San Francisco
www.voiceoneonline.com
When looking for good voice-over and acting training, Los Angeles and New York usually top the list. That is until I found Voice One in San Francisco. For over twenty years, Voice One has offered a comprehensive voice-over and acting training program.
Under the direction of owner/founder and author of the best selling voiceover book, There’s Money Where Your Mouth Is, Elaine Clark offers a one-stop-shop to learn how to make money as a professional voice-over, stage, film, and commercial actor.
By: Brea Tisdale
Why San Francisco rather than LA? Well, the City (that’s what the locals call it) has it all. It’s known for its creative ad agencies. In fact, many consider San Francisco the 4th largest market in advertising after LA, NY, and Chicago. Silicon Valley, home to many high tech companies like Apple, Google, Ebay, and Yahoo, provides a wealth of corporate narration and on-camera spokesperson jobs. The video game industry, which started in the Bay Area, is thriving. Toy companies like Leap Frog guarantee toy voice work for many local actors. The independent film business is steady and TV shows, like Trauma, hire local actors. Plus, the Bay Area has little companies like Pixar, Lucas Arts, Skywalker Sound, and Electronic Arts in its backyard. The driving force behind Voice One, Elaine Clark, is an award winning actor, director, producer, teacher and playwright. She is a member of SAG and AFTRA and has performed in hundreds of voiceover and on-camera commercials, industrial narrations, video
games, toys, films and TV. Voice One also performs production services in casting, directing, and recording. Curriculum at Voice One is based on four major components: Sub-text, Technique, Spontaneity, and Style. Core curriculum classes include four tracks: Commercial, Narration, Character, and Business/Marketing. Classes are ongoing throughout the year. During the summer, Voice One offers a three-week Summer Fast Track. It includes one full week each of commercial, narration, and character classes. Students from all over the world (including Japan, Germany, China, Canada, and Mexico) train at Voice One. Every teacher at Voice One is a working professional – actor, producer, director, talent agent, casting director, or engineer - with real life experiences and knowledge to share. Classes are designed to help students become professional actors or at the very least become better communicators. What I learned in talking to Ms. Clark is that the job of a great communicator is to engage the audience, make them feel the message, and take action. That, it turns out, is harder than you think! Average class size is around a dozen people but varies based on class structure. The place to start, Intro to Voice-Over and Acting, is offered every six weeks or so. Investment is only $30. Weekends and evenings are primary class times. Voice One provides a supportive, nurturing environment that offers students with the tools and strengths they need to become working professionals in the voiceover and acting business. So whether you are new to the business or want to improve your skills, Voice One in San Francisco has you covered. Indeed, like the title of Ms. Clark’s book, “There’s Money Where Your Mouth Is!” To learn more about Voice One, check out www.voiceoneonline.com, call 415.974.1103, or email vone@aol.com.

Connecting Voice with Song
We professionals all know how crucial it is to find training that propels us to break through our barriers of expectations and craft to possibilities that otherwise lie just outside our grasp.
In her Alhambra studio Suzanne trains students to do just that. “It all begins with developing sound vocal technique,” says Suzanne referring to her use of the time-honored Bel Canto method, “The speaking and the singing voice are the same voice. There is one voice; but many styles of singing.” Suzanne guides her students through the discovery of this connection navigating the technical requirements of the music which paves the way for creating compelling moments in your performance. “This is what engages the listener—critics, casting directors, musical directors, and audience members included. It’s those moments that tip the balance in your favor and separates you from the other hundred people they’ve heard,” explains Suzanne. “Which is exactly what happened in my career. I was cast in the first Broadway show I auditioned for. I was the only one called back out of the three hundred other singers auditioning that day because I had a moment that stood out from the crowd.”
Suzanne humbly refers to as “on the job training” in over 28 shows on and off Broadway, Tours, including a sixteen year affiliation with the Disney Company, are the foundation for her practical approach. “It’s all air compression. In singing, your body is the instrument; your voice is the music. You sing with a still open throat. It takes both physical and mental coordination to accomplish this, much like playing tennis or dancing,” explains Suzanne. Summing up, she adds, “When a student stops listening to the sound of his or her own voice and starts focusing
on the visceral experience of singing, they are on the right track.” Suzanne struck me at first impression, as someone who is honest, passionate, and confident. I am happy to report after getting to know her more, first impressions are lasting. Suzanne Lukather’s professional affiliations include AEA, SAG, AFM, and NATS.

I was able to speak with Steven last week and found myself enlightened by what he had to say. I discovered that he became a teacher at the young age of 19 years old. It happened by chance in College; a teacher pulled him aside and told him that he was too qualified to be in the class. Steven needed the easy credit so he struck a deal with the professor. Steven taught part of the class for the rest of the semester; and that was when and where the magic began. Steven’s belief in people is beyond extraordinary. He truly believes that there is only one art, and that art is you. What is refreshing is that Steven doesn’t adhere to most rules, he finds them limiting. A place safe enough for Couture By: Brea Tisdale I pride myself on being someone that is always finding really unique “one of kind” vintage pieces of clothing. The thing about buying these “unique” pieces is that you don’t always/can’t really wear them without having them cleaned first, because honestly who knows where they have been…(Really who wants to know)? But, I get really nervous about taking my stuff to the cleaners…who hasn’t had your favorite one-of-a-kind coat ruined or misplaced…. I sure have! have time to be fooling around with their clothes. They are often expected to be wearing certain things at certain times or they might even be wearing something that is on loan to them… so they can’t afford costly mistakes. In fact, a good friend of mine owns a high-end boutique on Third Street and someone had come in to pull clothing for a photo shoot. Before returning it to the store they had it cleaned and the random “Joeblow” cleaners ruined the clothing… which is a loss of merchandise. My friend then started having everyone take the borrowed merchandise from her store to Beverly Crest and it’s as if the items never left.
Something else I witnessed while in Beverly Crest was a woman whose clothing had been around a lot of smoke from the fires and her clothing reflected that. At Beverly Crest they offer smoke damage cleaning which gets that ever lingering smell of smoke out of your clothes, so they They have been around since don’t have to be replaced. Another 1927. The thing I quickly discovered about what makes the way Harry runs his business different than the average “Joe-blow” cleaners you see out there, is that with “Joe-blow” cleaners you get “Joe- blow” service. Beverly Crest caters to upper estate/ celebrity clientele as well as studios. Which I know you are thinking so what, who cares…? Well I do and so should you frankly. As you may or may not know, most celebrities don’t
Also for the environmentally friendly person out there, they offer what they call “wet cleaning” where they don’t use any chemicals on your clothing… but if you are a germ-a-fob and really want to make sure to get the junk out of that jacket you brought in… you can rest assured they only use the best products out there. The reason I think this business works so well, is because they are solid from the inside out. Most of the employees have been with the
company for 10 plus years. In fact, a man who had worked for the company 9 years when Harry and david took over, continued working with them for another 20 years before he retired. The reason for this is because what I noticed from just being in there, you can see it’s a friendly lowpressure environment, where they are more about the quality than the quantity. What I mean by that is most cleaners have their employees doing 25 or 30 presses an hour where at Beverly Crest they do 7 or 8. This is because each garment is inspected before the cleaning and then inspected after the cleaning by a separate department to make sure there aren’t any tears/ discoloration or any damage. Volume doesn’t matter here, it’s quality. So, if you have a couture piece or are a production studio or someone like myself who really cares about your unique piece - this is the place to go. Every garment is treated and cared for as if it were their own personal treasure. And don’t worry about them losing anything because every item has a computer tag on it that allows them to track every movement of your piece, so they know where everything is at all times. Just ask James, who has been going there for 75 years…. Obviously they are doing something right!

Future Progressive: Three Short Conversations on Global Citizenship by Dr. Laura Wilhelm, LauraWil Intercultural For me this quotation from the Beatles’ 1967 song “Hello, Goodbye” perfectly captures the amusing and confusing aspects of human communication. The chaos only increases when dialogues occur across cultures. In vain do ESL teachers try to restructure mono-cultural student clusters. The pull of the
familiar is simply too strong for most of us. It is all too easy to say GoodBYE when the natural differences between people cease to make any sense. This series of three short conversations on global citizenship are intended for those of us who want to do it the hard way and say HELLo to cultural pluralism. The U.S. economy no longer dominates the global market. I believe that Americans literally cannot afford to overlook intercultural commercial ventures. Besides, we really don’t have a choice. In this era of globalization, almost all businesses are multinational in one way or another. Major cities like Los Angeles are a microcosm of the American melting pot. Thus, they have enormous potential to generate solutions for global challenges.

Today I would like to share some words with you regarding the seriousness of us needing to place some thought behind important things such as integrity, honesty, loyalty, trustworthy and Love! The two that stand out the most in my opinion is what I refer to as the two “L’s “ Loyalty and Love, which should be present in any relationship personal or business. Moving forward from yesterday is going to require serious effort on the part of the entire universe. Darwin’s doing it again folk’s calling out for the Star’s among all others to take a closer look at their team’s, crew’s, group’s, circle’s and/or posse to evaluate the Loyalty which is a critical component in moving forward. We also must examine the Love aspect as well, in which I am referring to as the Love for our craft and crew. Let’s make a new beginning by placing some serious focus on the future moving forward using the two “L’s “ Loyalty for the team and Love for the game is my fun way to give my reader’s on this day which is my mission possible. Let’s make the year 2010 the best ever by making better decision’s for the world in which we live. I personally invite you to check on my topic for next month titled: “Addicted To The Right Thing’s” so stay tuned. 9 X 9 = HELL?
Nine bands, nine hours equals pure brutality! This day is the day of HELL with an arrangement of acts unlike any other, with this very special fusion of combining not one but two tours of pure adrenaline force you haven’t seen anything yet. Erupting from the sound barrier known as the Hollywood Palladium, this Sunset spot light was the ultimate sights and sounds of this unforgettable night. Round one commenced with the likeness of openers Dirge Within who performed a solid 20-minte set up that consists of tunes coming off their recent album “Forced Fed Lies” getting the crowd up and running the blood rushing to their heads pumping with energy that could not be contained. Next up metal goers Hate Eternal rubbing off their black metal style interacting with the crowd on/off shaking hands and tossing guitar picks as the on-lookers grabbed with anticipation. Soon after Born of Osiris struck a chord with the crowd getting their keyboarding techniques under control while the rest of the band played right on through until the first round of acts was soon drawn to a close. Round two soon got underway as Whitechapel took over the stage – all you would see every few seconds would be a blurry vision of a person being tossed or thrown directly onto the sea of people jumping and shouting right along to the beat of the music. The music did not stop there though because
it was Unearth who had jumped upon the stage and continued to roll with this energetic madness. These guys dealing out all the energy they possible could having a repeating occurrence of the first round but maintaining it when it was all said and done. But as soon as they’re performance had commenced it had soon ended, and it was Chimaira’s turn to turn this place upside down and inside out. That is exactly the vibration that unfolded getting the crowd up and running somewhat during their set the fans eagerly awaiting for the band that was to come up after these guys were just to energized to concentrate on Chimaira’s actions. Now that the first set of rounds was over with – it was time for the last three acts to take over and do their thing but was the crowd even up for it after those first arrangements of acts? Yes they were. Death metallers Cannibal Corpse were one of the three major headliners of that night and boy oh boy was everybody in anticipation of their arrival. Once they had appeared on stage all HELL broke loose and literally the floor was opened up in two different sections as the entire crowd of people was nothing more than a tidal wave of people. Everybody was being pushed and shoved around falling down and being picked right up right on into the last song of their set up “Hammer Smashed Face”.
the last headliners who everybody was in high hopes of witnessing was Trivium a heavy metal act whose current actions brought them humiliation. The floor had opened up and the crowd had returned but not everybody was quite into these “runner-ups” they’re performance lacked the quality of the music they’ve been known to dish out and this performance wasn’t all that great. So once the “runner-ups” were dead and gone the final act of the night was about to draw an ending point of their musical career as front man Jamey Jasta says “This will be our last time here out on the West Coast, you won’t be seeing us until next summer – so everybody get moving!” Hatebreed’s hardcore metal styling’s brings out the punk era meets metal era and combines the two fussing together such sound it remains to the point of sounding great throughout the entire set. Jasta going down the lines of performing such hits as “Live for This”, “Destroy Everything”, “As Die Heart As They Come”, and paying tribute to an act that has always been there for them as Jasta says “This band helped us out while out on tour and let us use their instruments – that is SLAYER!” “This song is “Ghosts Of War”. Hatebreed literally tearing up the crowd ten times more than any of the previous acts had done wrapping up this night as the night that truly was HELL.
Afterwards the crowd of people had disappeared and the second to
