She found herself in a predicament not uncommon to many college students in America: she no longer had financial support from her parent to finance her college education. She was faced with the decision of quitting school at Emory University and transferring to a less expensive state school or quitting college altogether. It was at this crossroad in Lisa’s life that she made a crucial decision. A decision that changed the course of her life and would ultimately affect the lives of all the people her success has touched. Lisa chose to stay in school and fight the circumstances she found herself in. She made a plan. A business plan for her life. She wrote down exactly what she would have to do to earn enough money to stay in school and graduate. It was a plan filled with puzzle pieces of part-time jobs, possible grants and even less dependable school loans

“SHE RULES HER LIFE LIKE A BIRD IN FLIGHT,” – but part-time jobs is the operative phrase. Lisa worked a full time job, as a pre-med major at a very prestigious school. Lisa was determined she would finish what she started at Emory even if it meant going to class in the morning, working a job until 10 pm at night and then studying in the computer lab until the early hours of the morning. This discipline and perseverance shaped her into the person she is today and changed Lisa’s way of thinking. When making a plan for anything, just like writing a screenplay, things look amazing on paper – filming a movie is a different story. So, when Lisa wrote down those long hours of work needed to meet her financial criteria… that was the easy part: sticking to that plan was harder than you could imagine. Lisa was in unchartered territory; how could she be so sure this plan that she created would work? Somewhere, deep inside of her subconscious she believed that she had the strength to follow her script – she knew her movie would have a happy ending...and, of course, it did. Lisa graduated from Emory majoring in Psychology/Pre-Med and moved on to attend Johns Hopkins University and complete their prestigious and esteemed Leadership Development Program for Minority Managers. A Cinderella story? Yes, but without the Fairy Godmother. This was the lesson where Lisa learned she had to be her own Fairy Godmother and grant her own wishes – and it all starts with making a

I had the pleasure of covering the Hollywood Weekly’s 1ST Annual Film Festival on Saturday, September 20th at the iconic William Morris Building’s Charles Aidikoff Screening room. This event paid tribute to legends in the film and TV industry at a really iconic place as Aidikoff who is a renowned projectionist and a living legend in Hollywood. He has worked in the industry for over 75 years and claims to have seen over 50,000 films. Aidikoff’s grandson, Josh, was in attendance to show his support for the festival. “It was an incredible honor to have someone of Mr. Aidikoff’s stature lend his name and talent to this festival, especially since it’s our first year. And we have amazing films, performers and sponsors,” said Prather Jackson, the Publisher and Editor-inChief of Hollywood Weekly Magazine and the founder of the festival.

Guests were treated to a wonderful live jazz performance by Debbie Joyce featuring the Tony Campodonic Trio along with a screening of their winning submissions originating from 60 foreign countries. The star-studded red carpet event brought artist from not just film and TV, but legends in the realms of cuisine, fashion and the spiritual and fine art world. The beverages at this event were sponsored by the fine folks at Hula Girl and the very tasty sushi was catered by the spunky and personable celebrity Chef Jack Lee. “I think this festival is absolutely amazing and I stand by what Prather creates,” said Hula Girl’s Brand Ambassador BJ Drake. “It was an honor to work with Mr. Prather Jackson and be a part of this wonderful film festival,” added Chef Lee. Renowned fashion designer Sue Wong was in

attendance as well as Master Romio Shrestha, who is a modern master of the Indo-Nepali-Tibetan Buddhist traditions of enlightenment art. “I came to the festival to support Chef Jack. He’s a good friend. He was going to make a special dinner for Master Romio, but since the Master has to go back to Vietnam, we were on a tight schedule, so Chef said we should stop by and check out the festival and I’m so glad we did. And BJ is a good friend too and Hula Girl sponsors my parties, so I wanted to come and show my support for him as well. As for her upcoming projects,
Wong said,” I have a huge show in October at LA Live, where the theme is “Fairies and Sirens,” which is about the dark and light side of feminine nature. It’s the sacred and the profane. The Mayor of Los Angeles and the ambassadors to China and Great Britain will be there,” added Wong. “And Master Romio is the only living artist in the Natural History Museum and has celebrity clientele like Bill Gates, Charlize Theron, Madonna, Bono, Peter and Tara Guber, Deepak Chopra and Dr. Andrew Weil, so I knew he’d enjoy the festival,” said Wong. Prominent casting director Natasha Ward (“Tupac,””The 420 Movie: Mary
and Jane”) was also in attendance. “I’m producing as well and I’m looking for other producers and investors. I’m also expanding into the realm of media with a radio show,” said a very busy Ward. Once again, I covered the festival as press and talent. In the film, I acted with multi-talented, writer-directorproducer-actor Rajeev Chhibber. This film, “I’m Not That Kind of Girl.” is about a beautiful, yet emotionally troubled young woman Parisa (Mariam Vardani), who finds it hard to be in a healthy romantic relationship with her husband Raj (Chhibber), and I play her concerned but meddlesome Aunt Vida, who is married to Parisa’s even more concerned and meddlesome uncle Nasir (Amhad Lucan from “Homeland”). Tulsi Ram plays Parisa’s caring father. Sittara Attaie, Caroline Amiguet, Steve Whelan and Rayva Sehmi round out this international cast. Chhibber was
unable to attend the festival as he booked a nation-al commercial for AT&T and was on set, but he was definitely there in spirit. “I really wanted to be there to show my support, but I booked this commercial job. I’m totally there in spirit though,” said Chhibber. “It’s great to see the end result of Rajeev’s hard work and talent lead to his film screening here. This is a wonderful festival and I’m so glad I could be a part of it during its inaugural year,” said esteemed entertainment attorney Nadia Davari, who provided legal services for the film. “It was also good to see my clients and friends work on the screen,” Davari added. I understand that you began in the mortgage industry and transition into technology. How did your previous experience help with your ability to fill a void that YouTube and others failed to address? When my partner and I met him, and explained to him what we were trying to accomplish as a company, he quickly understood our theory and wanted to come on as our CTO. It was very challenging for him to code it into 5 different languages that work seamlessly.

eing a genius isn’t enough anymore, you have to stand for something. People have to rally behind your principles...your cause. How do you apply your brilliance in the world? Is society benefitting from your talents? To make a true impact today you have to be a genius with a compelling story to tell. Spike Rebel is that kind of genius. How an artist enters their profession is everything. It doesn’t get more storybook than Spike, whose birth name is Carnell Newbill, but Spike Rebel, a name born during his college days, is a title powerful enough to match his enormous musical talents. As a young boy Spike’s father took him to see legendary jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell. A 7 year-old Spike Rebel sat transfixed by the magic Burrell created on those guitar strings. Perhaps it was the vibrations of Burrell’s music that awakened something inside of Spike. This was a path laid down to him from the ultimate musician. Kenny Burrell would later become a Professor at U.C.L.A. teaching students the sacred body of work we call “Ellingtonia.” This was Spike’s introduction to the world of music. Jazz was Spike’s starting point, but Spike’s musical genius would end up reaching every aspect of music imaginable. In truth, film composition may be the only genre sturdy enough to encompass and withstand the power of Spike’s music. It’s the one place hi incredible creativity can take flight. “Black Coffee” and “Black Butterfly,” two films by writer/ director Mark Harris are what you’ll find on Spike on IMDB – but this is nowhere near the extent of his filmography. If there is an Achilles ’ heel to Spike Rebel, it’s that he gives without expecting you to reciprocate his generosity. He lends his talent freely. To Spike, it’s all about the music. It always has been. If he can help you sing better, or become a better musician, then he’s causing a positive ripple effect in the world. Now...the music. Good luck trying to classify the sounds that come from his guitar or the compositions he writes. Spike’s music covers all genres of music, and he can create to fit whatever style of music you desire. Jazz, rock, Latin, Brazilian, African, blues – in short, the true definition of “World Music.” But let’s talk about Soul for a moment. On the critically acclaimed CD “Soulful Integrity” by the talented songstress “Maxi,” Spike wrote every song on the album – and this only hints at Spike’s evolution of Soul Music. In fact, Spike has surpassed what we call “Neo Soul” on his own albums “Universoul ...to the Neo” and “Acoustic Soul.” If you Google Spike Rebel you’ll see a multitude of collaborations with young hip-hop artists like Common, who respect the fact that Spike’s music is the future of Soul. These artists don’t have to dig in the past to find sample hooks – all they need to do is spend an afternoon with Spike in a recording studio and they go from “Neo Soul” to “New Soul.” This is only one strand of Spike’s legacy to our generation; Spike is a musician and composer for the world, because “sounds” are what interests him. Like Beethoven who walked by the Rhine river in Germany for inspiration, or Johannes Brahms, who credited his many strolls through forests for the glory of his Symphony No. 2. Spike Rebel is a student of sounds. They come to him raw and unfiltered, and he processes them into the sweet music that has earned him the love and respect of fans and fellow musicians. Spike had a good reason to choose Rebel as his pseudonym. Throughout his life Spike always encountered people who would tell him something couldn’t be done – and then Spike would accomplish it. Believing in himself and staying positive about his dreams came naturally to Spike. As a child Spike had no doubt he would grow up to be a singer, musician and composer – guitarists were like superheroes to him with their flashy, electric guitars. Spike knew regardless of what happened in life he was going to be a part of that musical world. His early influences as a teenager were George Benson, Earl Klugh and Pat Metheny. Jazz guitarists – but as always, the myriad of sounds around him always pulled him away and into different musical explorations. Spike collaborated on a remix for Diana Ross’ “Chain Reaction” and gained a whole new flood of admirers, but just as fast as he conquers one musical genre he’s off and running into another.
There is one constant in Spike’s life, however, that I haven’t mentioned yet: Spike has always been a painter. In addition to his musical talents Spike is a visual artist, which isn’t surprising – you don’t need to have synesthesia to see the vibrant splashes of color in Spike’s music. Spike’s father was a drafting teacher so he grew up in drawing and has never stopped – but that’s not the most amazing thing about Spike’s art. Spike has combined painting and music in his many performances at renowned art galleries. This isn’t something he has to do, it’s something he loves to do. Usually he’ll have a trio with him and at a certain point he’ll stop playing music and start painting on canvas. He likes mixed media, which means Spike can paint with anything – and when I say anything you can include wine and black coffee in his arsenal. The themes of his painting vary. Images of love, city landscapes, anything that comes to mind; this is Spike’s world of creative improvisation. It takes him ten to fifteen minutes to paint, then he returns to his guitar and resumes playing. The canvas takes fifteen minutes to dry and then he auctions the painting... I may have mentioned Spike Rebel is a compelling genius. Soul Salon is another artistic venture Spike has participated in. It’s a live show that combines music, food and art. Thirteen episodes have been shot, of which Spike appears in the majority of them. In live venues like this Spike often finds poets who want him to accompany their performances; these are poets who don’t want sampled hip-hop beats, they want the real thing. Soul Salon is currently being shopped around to network executives, but this is just one project of many that Spike is working on. On Maxi’s “Soulful Integrity,” Spike’s first track is titled “Psalm 61/1-5,” and in many ways it’s a fitting example of how Spike views creating. Spike has worked with Gospel artists before and believes his songs come from a higher place, but they make their home within him – he calls this place his oil well. Spike can write songs with the ease that King David wrote his Psalms. It’s an effortless, meditative process. Over the years Spike has written over a thousand songs; he literally has archives of songs that he brings out for performances or recording sessions. This is why it’s impossible to classify exactly what kind of music Spike can produce – he has hundreds of songs you’ve never even heard. In addition to the guitar Spike is also an accomplished keyboardist...once again he found a way to get in touch with sounds. Scoring soundtracks isn’t the only visual medium Spike is interested in; he has an innate talent for commercial jingles.
