r. Michael K. Obeng is a Beverly Hills plastic and reconstructive surgeon currently on staff at Cedars Sinai Hospital. He was born in Ghana, where the abundance of medical and anatomical problems surrounding him made him aware of those less fortunate than himself. Since childhood, he has had the vision of becoming a physician in order to make a positive difference in the world. After completing boarding school in Ghana, Dr. Obeng was accepted to Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he began his journey toward becoming a plastic surgeon. After completing medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Dr. Obeng did a five-year residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery. He then furthered his training by completing a hand & micro-neurovascular surgery fellowship at Harvard. During tht time he served as an assistant surgeon at the prestigious Massachusettes General Hospital. Dr. Obeng went on to become the youngest Chief of Plastic Surgery at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center in Youngstown, Ohio, a position he held for over five years before settling in Beverly Hills. Dr. Obeng takes a unique approach to solving complex cosmetic and reconstructive issues. He is one of the few surgeons in the world to successfully reattach a limb. He was named among “America’s Top Plastic Surgeons” by the Consumer’s Research Council of America in 2011. In November of 2013, he was honored by Mercy Mission Bear Hospital as “Doctor of the Year” for his tireless effort to help underserved children through his non-profit organization R.E.S.T.O.R.E. The NAACP also took the measure of honoring Dr. Obeng in 2013, with the coveted NAACP Humanitarian Award, alongside house hold names such as Vanessa Williams, and Loretta Devine. Dr. Obeng prides himself on being accessible to his patients at all times. “Each and every patient is an opportunity to touch a life in a positive way. I try and set myself apart from other physicians by caring for each patient as I would for a close family member,” says the Harvard-trained and board-certified surgeon. “I provide my cell number so my patients can reach me any time.” Dr. Obeng travels around the world with his charitable organization “R.E.S.T.O.R.E.,” providing free reconstructive surgery to people who have been abused, battered, or with congenital and accidental deformities. His endless perseverance and determination has brought him through unimaginable obstacles and ultimately led him to being one of the most renowned and sought-after plastic and reconstructive surgeons in the world. The following is an exclusive interview between Hollywood Weekly and Dr. Michael K. Obeng:
8 - HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
HW: You were born in Ghana, a small, medically challenged country in Africa. Tell us about the experiences you had at an early age and how they pushed you to seek a career in the medical field. Ghana is a very poor country, with a population of about 25 million. Poverty is prevalent and you see a lot of people who are sick and do not have access to good health care. There are many who are born with deformities and defects – and these people are shunned. Some of these children are referred to as “river babies.” These kids don’t have a chance; people hide their own children just to prevent them from being killed or ridiculed. When you witness things like that, it can only make you a stronger person. Growing up, I was always fascinated with the human body. In Ghana, many people idolize educated individuals because these are the people who are well dressed, live in nice homes, and drive nice cars. There was a gynecologist who had an office in our neighborhood and when I would see the way he carried himself and how he was respected, I wanted to be a physician. The idea of going into plastic surgery goes back to when I was about 15, when I witnessed Operation Smile visit Ghana. There was a woman in our town who was a victim of an acid attack, this left her with severe burns to her face. She never left her home until Operation Smile performed a life changing surgery on her. After seeing the remarkable difference after the surgery, I knew I wanted to be a plastic surgeon. In addition, witnessing the premature deaths of my mother and grandmother – the two most important people in my life growing up, further pushed me to seek a career as a physician. That is why medicine became such a natural fit for me.
“I pride myself in the fact that my patients have access to me.” HW: What do you focus on during a patient’s first consultation visit? Our main focus is patient comfort. We all like to work with some one we feel we can trust. Our main goal is to gain the patients’ trust and we treat each patient the way we would like to be treated. Honestly, I don’t like doctors. I think some doctors can be too cocky. I like to put myself in every patient’s shoes. No matter your ethnicity, gender, clothing or otherwise, I never judge a patient. I get to know them; not only as a patient, but also as a person. I always ask my staff to do the same as well, and the patient feels it. HW: What recent advances in the field of plastic surgery have you incorporated into your own practices? Right now there is a movement towards minimally invasive methods. A lot of patients are afraid of general anesthesia. They want to have results with little or no downtime so you have to adapt. There are so many things I’ve incorporated into my practice. For example, right now I do most of my facelifts under local anesthesia. The whole face is numbed; we do the surgery,
the patient is fine, they’re awake and they talk to you. It also lets me know exactly how much to adjust the face. We call it quite literally “wide-awake facial sculpting.” Younger patients don’t need to be cut because there are different lasers to rejuvenate the face. We also do thermi-tightening, a machine that uses the application of heat to melt fat and tighten skin. It’s great for young people. It can also be used for the neck, jowls, arms and thighs, pretty much any problem area that needs thightening. HW: I understand that most of your patients are women anywhere from ages 25 to 65. What are the different procedures you provide for each of these age groups? The younger demographics come to us more for breast and body contouring. Younger patients are also starting to pay more attention to their faces. We all know that we only have one face. The face is our passport to the world. Your face can help gain you entrance through many doors, and sadly even denied so putting your best “face” forward is a must. Younger patients are now focusing on getting Botox at an earlier age because they don’t want to have wrinkles. They are being preemptive about the way they look. When you get to more mature patients, they come in because their faces are starting to sag, and they’re beginning to see signs of aging. If they see us sooner, we don’t have to do surgery; we can use non-surgical procedures to rejuvenate the face: Botox, fillers, chemical peels, lasers, etc. All these are great methods for rejuvenation. But when it gets to the point where the skin is too loose and too droopy, that’s when the knife comes in. We have to make incisions and move skin and tighten the muscles underneath.
HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY - 9
HW: What is the spectrum of services that you offer? We do hair transplantation for men and women who are balding, forehead/brow lifts, eyelid surgery, cheek implants, chin implants, lip augmentation with fat or fillers, rhinoplasty (nose jobs), we fix breathing problems, Botox, lasers, fillers, and chemical peels for
“We study the way patients have progressed and then try to reverse the clock and turn back the hands of time.” the face and neck. When it comes to the breasts, we lift them up, make them bigger, reduce them. For men, we do male breast reduction, scrotal lifts, pec and ab implants, and more. We offer transgender procedures, liposuction, tummy tucks, fat transfer, vaginal tightening, labial reduction, calf implants, butt implants, weight loss surgery and so on. With a knife and a couple of lasers, we can do anything. In addition, we do reconstructive surgery of all types. I also have specialized training in hand surgery. I’m very well trained and glad that I took the extra steps to be highly skilled in complex reconstruction. HW: You offer a large variety of services and procedures. Which of these would you consider to be your focus and area of expertise? I enjoy doing faces because I’ve mastered the face. I’ve been able to figure out how to rejuvenate the face without going under, without using general anesthesia. Over 90 percent of my facelifts are done under local anesthesia. It’s a quicker recovery and patients love it. It’s cheaper because you don’t need to pay an anesthesiologist. It’s also safer because every time you go under general anesthesia there is a risk of blood clot. And because we don’t give the patient lots of IV fluids, there is less swelling. Breast and body contouring comes very natural to me as my artistic prowess combined with my knowledge of anatomy makes
it a nice fit. I also love doing hand surgery and reconstructive surgery; these surgeries are a lot more rewarding than some of the other procedures that we do. HW: Anatomy is truly an art in its endless different forms. What is your approach to achieving a balanced and harmonious physical appeal in each person? Going back to their old photos. A lot of times, especially when dealing with the aging face you cannot overdo the face and make someone look unlike themselves. Patients are always terrified because we’ve seen what comes on TV, what’s portrayed in the media. We like to study people and see how a patient’s face has changed over the years by looking at their photos. We then reposition the tissues to where they once belonged. Anatomy is very important, you’re absolutely right. I always used to tell my students when I was in academic medicine that anatomy is 75% of the job. If you know your anatomy, surgery is only 25%. We study the way patients have progressed and then try to reverse the clock and turn back the hands of time. HW: You’ve mentioned before that a phrase that has stuck with you since childhood is, “Perseverance conquers all difficulties.” You have fought and overcome a tremendous amount of obstacles to get to where you are today and an important part of your career is giving back to people of all ages and to help improve their lives. You’ve done this in countless different ways, whether it’s by giving a motivational speech or improving one’s self esteem and image. What are some words of advice you can give readers pertaining to achieving one’s goals? Perseverance conquers all difficulties. In life you will encounter so many obstacles, but if you stick to your original plan and hold stead fast, navigating around the obstacles you can achieve your goals both large and small, each and every day. There is a Japanese proverb that says, “if you fall down seven times, get up eight.” If you are willing to get up many more times then you have fallen, you can seize the goals that are ahead of you. There is nothing that you can dream of that you cannot achieve. Many times people think success is just hard work or just good planning. But you can never achieve success without a combination of both. Success is a combination of hard work and good planning. One last thing, you don’t have to live with what your mama gave you. NAACP members voted on the winners, which were announced when the envelopes were opened on Friday, February 21, during the Awards Ceremony for non-televised categories. Nahm takes top honours at
ASIA’S 50 BEST RESTAURANTS AWARDS in Singapore
Nahm in Bangkok has secured the No.1 spot at the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2014 awards in Singapore, earning the title of The S.Pellegrino Asia’s Best Restaurant. Opened in 2010, the Bangkok restaurant is also named The S. Pellegrino Best Restaurant in Thailand.
N
ow in its second year, Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna and organized by William Reed Business Media, announced the 2014 winners at an elegant awards ceremony at Capella Hotel, Singapore. At Nahm, Australian-born chef David Thompson celebrates the bold flavours of authentic Thai cuisine by reviving and reinterpreting centuries-old recipes of former Thai matriarchs. Nahm’s fiery, feisty menu strikes a delicate balance between tradition and innovation, cultural practices and contemporary style. Ranked No.3 at the inaugural Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants awards last year, the restaurant gained global attention when it first appeared on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list in 2012 at No.50, jumping to No.32 a year later. China leads Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2014 with 16 establishments ranked on the list, followed by Japan and Singapore landing 10 and eight restaurants respectively. The 2014 list welcomes 10 new entries, including first-time representation from restaurants in Korea (Jungsik, No.20), and Taiwan (Le Moût, No.24). Individual Country Awards: Among the 16 China entries, Amber (No.4) in Hong Kong earns the title of The S. Pellegrino Best Restaurant in China. New additions to China’s rankings include Family Li Imperial Cuisine (No.46) in

Securing the No.6 position on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list, Restaurant André is named The S.Pellegrino Best Restaurant in Singapore for the second consecutive year. Chef-owner André Chiang also picks up the respected Chefs’ Choice Award, voted for by his peers on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list. India is well represented on the list with six entries. Bukhara (No.27) leads the contingent, securing the coveted title of The S.Pellegrino Best Restaurant in India. The country is represented by returning favourites, including Indian Accent (No. 29), Dum Pukht (No. 30) and Varq (No.32). The winners’ circle also includes Ivan Li of Family Li Imperial Cuisine in Shanghai (No.46), who is the worthy recipient of The Diners Club® Lifetime Achievement Award.
