HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY - 3

Dear Readers, Our April Edition of Hollywood Weekly Magazine celebrates a breakout star, breathtaking creativity in fashion and the launching of a new global media empire – all buzz words and phrases you’ve come to know and expect from HWM. We begin with the most exciting business merger in the entertainment world that we may have ever covered. With an enormously strong media presence on multiple continents, Daemon Hillin’s partnership with Thailand film giants Rachvin and Kulthep Narula, is going to change the game of international film and television productions. Daemon’s Hillin Entertainment USA and Rachvin and Kulthep’s Benetone Films – the largest foreign film production company in Thailand – has now become Benetone Hillin Entertainment. Both companies have always had a high standard of excellence and integrity in filmmaking, and now that they’ve joined forces the world of cinema and television has just been enriched. Our second feature story is one of our favorite segments here at HWM. As you know, we’ve always had an eye for finding new, fresh talent in the entertainment world, and our interview with actor, Tiey Young, is a perfect example of a gifted artist on the rise. Working both in front of the camera and also behind the scenes (even helping to build a set for “The Big Bang Theory”), Tiey has an almost inexhaustible energy and enthusiasm, which is why we’re sure he’ll become a recognizable face to audiences very soon. Fashion has always been Hollywood’s pièce de résistance, and in our third feature we explore the unbelievably creative mind of Jessica Minh Anh, who is now literally and figuratively topping her last Fashion Show which was, astonishingly, staged at the Grand Canyon Skywalk, 4,000 feet above the Colorado River! Her new J Spring Fashion Show at the Gardens by the Bay SKYWAY, in Singapore, boasts an equally vertigo-inducing view – but, then again, the world of fashion has never been for the faint hearted. An actor’s journey, exhilarating fashion divas in exotic locales, and the birth of a new film production powerhouse in the world – we hope you enjoy “the rush” and “the read” of our April Edition of HWM. As always, thank you all for your support. Sincerely,

Anthony Ewart Associate Editor

HW: How has the merging of Benetone Films and Hillin Entertainment helped to expand and build upon the services that each of you have offered? My partners, Rachvin and Kulthep Narula, have fifteen years of experience in production services. They know the ins and outs of filmmaking like no other, and with the production value that we get in Thailand, we are able to make a one million dollar film look like five million. There, we had a crew of 80, multiple locations, car crashes, helicopter shots-- I can’t do that here, and it adds incredible production value. They have great experience in the marketplace and a strong understanding of India and Asia. They are one of the oldest Indian families in Thailand. They took me on a tour and showed me how everything works in India. We talked to big distributors including EROS; there are so many avenues that I could never even go down without them. What I bring is the US side. I bring my new and established relationships with Hollywood agencies and a keen understanding of the US marketplace. We are able to build equity in a project before we make it. We add value in various ways including attaching key talent in front of and behind the camera. There are many factors involved on the US side that we handle here, while the Narula brothers take care of things in Thailand and throughout Asia. Together, we make up a welloiled movie-making machine. HW: I understand that Benetone Films is well known for not only producing feature films, but also for documentaries, television shows, commercials and still photography. Do you plan on incorporating those areas into Benetone Hillin Entertainment? Yes, we do. We plan on and have already started servicing productions from India in the states and are helping Thai producers that want to film in the US. We’re bridging that gap because Benetone has established that marketplace in Thailand. We take existing clients and invite them to HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY - 11

come to us when they want to shoot in the US instead of going elsewhere. They know we have a presence here and can handle it. We do all kinds of budgets for films, commercials, and music videos which is really interesting. HW: It’s evident that BHE emphasizes on making beautifully shot, high quality films. How does your approach differ from other companies when it comes to producing exceptional films? A lot of that deals with the production value that comes with shooting in Asia, which is hard to find in other countries or in the States. That alone is invaluable. Lots of movies are shooting in Georgia, Louisiana, Michigan; you see the same things over and over. It’s not often you see such exotic locations, so that definitely sets us apart right now. HW: Although your company produces films of all genres, which best represents BHE? BHE is content-driven, and we love high concept. We try to find what is missing in the marketplace by talking to sales companies and distributors and giving them what is needed. As far as a specific genre goes, it depends on our mood and the mood of the marketplace. HW: Tell us about your evolution. What steps did you take that facilitated your success? I was in mortgage, real estate finance. There was a market crash and I lost everything. My sister was working at CAA talent agency at the time, and I had been in entertainment back in the day, so I moved to LA and slept on my sister’s floor. I did all sorts of odd jobs-- catering, bartending-- barely making ends meet. I had a wealthy real estate investor who had done a lot of business with me. He came to me and said, “I want to get into Hollywood. I want to do something in filmmaking. What do you think?” I suggested doing a documentary and he wrote me a check for $100,000. No contract, nothing. He just looked me 12 - HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

in the eye and shook my hand. He bought me a camera, sound equipment, lights; I had no idea how to make a movie, but I piecemealed a production together. I found a camera operator on Craigslist and went from there. I was nervous the whole time, I had no idea what I was doing, but I ended up cutting a sizzle reel off the documentary. I found a character that I felt was special, made a promo on this guy, and took it around to all the big EP’s. I made a deal with Digital Ranch. I realized how inefficient I had been with my money, and I knew I had to rectify this. I went to work with a producer who had made 50 movies, I learned how to make a film, how to spend money, how it works. I worked for three years without pay. When I thought I could do it better than that producer, I started my own company, Hillin Entertainment. Literally six months later, I had A Stranger in Paradise going. HW: What are the company’s goals for the next five years? Increase our budgets. We need to be efficient with two to five million dollar budgets before jumping to ten million. The more money, the more problems. Right now, it’s about becoming the most efficient machine we can possibly be before we jump into higher budgets. But that’s where I want us to go. I want to do movies with Al Pacino, I want Hans Zimmer to compose them. But we need to master where we are before going where I’d like to be. HW: Tell us about your production facilities and capabilities. Benetone is a one-stop full production service house. From providing government filming permits to location permits, to sourcing the necessary equipment, hiring the local talent and crew. We also get involved with local casting and stunts. We pride ourselves on being full line producers, not just fixers or coordinators. We help our clients in finding solutions for cost effective and efficient shoots. We have consciously not purchased any of our own cameras or equipment because we feel we need to be lean and able to find the best equipment at

the best price possible from multiple sources. Our subsidiary company, Benetone Travel services, provides transportation and accommodation for clients. Over the years we have had many contacts in the business sector, government and the armed forces, all of which are very critical in getting things done.

Thai, Hindi, Punjabi, and English. We travel extensively and see wonderful cultures all over the world. We feel we are citizens of a borderless world. We want to reflect that diversity in the films we produce. The audience can expect to see a fusion of east and west.

HW: We hear of the volatile political climate and social unrest in Thailand. Is it safe to shoot there?

HW: You have worked with leading Bollywood production houses in Thailand including Yash Raj Films, Dharma Productions, Tips Industries Limited, Excel international and EROS International Media Limited. How do these relationships play into BHE’s future plans?

Thai people are friendly and gracious hosts. True, there is a climate of social unrest, but the protests are peaceful. Moreover, it’s limited to a very small part of the city. We feel that the media has over blown this. Despite protests, we did not face a single cancellation. The people who know Thailand understand that this is a local situation and there is no risk for visitors. It’s quite safe.

Bollywood is the fastest growing movie industry today. Many of the movies are shot in international locations, notably the USA and Canada. The films shot in these locations are mostly produced by those companies you mentioned. They have all worked with us in Thailand, there is a level of trust and understanding of their requirements and preferences.Due to culture differences, Bollywood has a unique way of operating and we get it. It’s easier to work with a known entity as it

HW: Tell us about your art of storytelling. What can your audience expect to see when they watch your productions? Kulthep and I are fourth generation Thai of India original. Our great-grandfather moved to Thailand in 1880. We spent our youth in Thailand, India, and the US. We are multi-lingual in

saves time and effort. Benetone is highly confident that we can extend that distinction to BHE in the US. We are in discussions with numerous Bollywood films that we have line produced for Thailand that need to shoot a portion in the US. They want BHE to handle the US portion for them as well.

THE MOST UNCONVENTIONAL SKY HIGH CATWALK

J SPRING FASHION SHOW on Gardens by the Bay’s Skyway

T

he highly anticipated J Spring Fashion Show on the world’s latest architectural wonder, Gardens by the Bay’s SKYWAY, in Singapore set new standards in fashion industry. The 128 metre long aerial walkway between two high tech Supertree structures was turned into the most unconventional catwalk yet. There is no surprise this sky high production is created by model and entrepreneur Jessica Minh Anh, who hosted the world’s highest fashion show on the Grand Canyon Skywalk at 4,000 feet above the Colorado River just a few months ago. J Spring Fashion Show 2014 further redefined modern fashion show standards against the usual catwalks inside hotels, halls, gardens, and tents. The highly anticipated J Spring Fashion Show featured an exquisite combination of Haute Couture and Prêt-à-Porter collections from various countries. “We saw a brand new take on modern beauty, with clean cut silhouettes, a mesmerizing fusion of layers and colours, and special detailing” said Jessica Minh Anh. The young director of J Model Management has previously worked with designers such as British fashion leader Paul Costelloe, Japanese power house Yumi Katsura, Dutch celebrity designer Addy van den Krommnacker, and Taiwanese sensation Shiatzy Chen among many others. Lebanese celebrity designer Ziad Nakad returned to Jessica’s

phenomenal catwalk to premier his latest Haute Couture collection. The master of shapes, texture and colours dazzled the finale with an almost unattainable balance between elegance and boldness in his every design. Besides the glamorous dresses, Jessica Minh Anh brought a menswear collection to her phenomenal catwalk for the very first time with the participation of British designer Mark Marengo. The Londonborn and Paris-raised talent is known for his signature sharp-cut tailoring and original designs. “The collection I’ve prepared for J Spring Fashion Show 2014 adds a contemporary twist to classic style. It’s elegant, chic and, fundamentally, wearable” said Mark Marengo. To compliment Jessica’s extraordinary vision, Singapore’s No 1 Action Salon designed exclusive architectural hairpieces while Japanese cosmetics brand Shu Uemura did a flawless makeup look and perfected the runway. The models walked in front of exclusive guests, which included country ambassadors, ministers, international designers, company directors and the national and international press. The guests enjoyed a complete VIP experience which started with a red carpet entrance and SoloStep photo booth. Guests were then seated at the Supertree Grove and enjoyed a panoramic view of the entire catwalk

on the OCBC Skyway before they indulged themselves in artistically designed and freshly made cakes by The Patissier at the networking session. At the same time, the press conference was held at Gardens by the Bay’s spectacular Waterview Room with an expansive view of Marina Bay waterfront. To ensure seamless installation, Jessica Minh Anh has joined forces with Singapore’s major production company Electronics & Engineering for a high tech sound system, and logistics company Nanyang Inc who created a highly secure backstage area on the OCBC Skyway as well as the special seating arrangement for guests. Other local partners of the show included SGBanner and InsiderTV Asia besides many others.

The exquisite showcase in the morning was extended till the evening with the J Spring After Party in the Pan Pacific Orchard Hotel. VIPs had a chance to see the most unique pieces from the catwalk up close via a mini fashion exhibition. Jessica Minh Anh’s previous shows have wowed guests with a beautifully made cake dress to a spectacular dove presentation, and there were definitely some pleasant surprises at J Spring Fashion Show on Gardens by the Bay’s OCBC Skyway. YENITZA MUNOZ

ACTRESS, MODEL, AND JOURNALIST, IS A TRIPLE THREAT!

Beauty, brains, and brawn Munoz, originally from Orange County, California is a force to be reckoned and is definitely making her presence known.

M

unoz is a Mexican American multi-faceted actress and entrepreneur that holds strong values and focal points for her career. “I’m passionate within the realm of arts. Whether it’s writing, acting, hosting, or producing, I can’t get enough of it; it’s my caffeine in the morning that drives me,” Munoz exclaims.

You may recognize Munoz from her work in the past seven years within the Spanish market. Grazing the screens of major networks such as: Estrella TV, Telemundo and Univision. This hopeful has now crossed over into the American market. “Being Mexican American and fluent in Spanish, has enabled me to work in Spanish television but my ultimate goal is to crossover into the American market. It’s common for first generation Latino(a)s to work in Spanish TV more then English. I hope to be given the opportunity to display my work in US entertainment soon, says Munoz. She adds, “I admire on and off screen talent. In cinema, I’ve always been fond of Woody Allen’s work. His stories are raw and real. There’s usually no ‘happy ending’ for the protagonist, which seems depressing but it shines light on how life can be at times. Allen can also be comedic with his witty writing. Woody Allen is great. For television and now film, I admire Seth Macfarlane because he’s comedic and crosses creative boundaries that are out of norm, which is fun. As in talent, I admire; Amercia Ferrera, Selma Hayek, Sophia Vergara, and Tyra Banks because they’ve overcome the stereotypical roles that many try to place them in. They’re able to be creative with their on-screen characters. Lastly, I respect Jennifer Lopez; she’s a brilliant entrepreneur. All of these individuals conquered the art in their profession and created something for themselves!” With a degree in English with a concentration in writing from Loyola Marymount University, Munoz has decided to capitalize on her skills and put her degree to use. Adding to her roster of talents, Munoz also writes screenplays. “I love storytelling, whether fictitious or factual, it enables me to express myself. I find it beautiful,” says Munoz. Munoz has also dabbled in the art of directing and producing.

My father was a fulltime pediatrician in Mexico and then immigrated to California to practice as a certified US doctor. The hours were tough for him but he did whatever he could for his family. My mother helped my father and attempted to be a small business owner. Being raised with fulltime working parents, made my siblings and I extremely independent at a young age, says Munoz. We became adults fast. Now that my parents are aging, we want to give back by supporting them. They deserve it. Munoz’s three siblings are all important factors into molding who she is today- a strong charismatic individual. With her oldest brother Olicer Munoz being a movie director and about to premier his feature film on autism called “Nathan’s Kingdom, her 2nd brother Andy Munoz who created a non-profit organization called “Driven for a Purpose,” and her younger sister attending college for phycology, Munoz says; I admire them, they’re achieving their dreams. Sky’s the limit and that’s thousands of feet up. The best piece of advice she has ever received comes from her mother. “If you let others affect your goals or ambitions you’ll never get there, you’re the one that creates your path, says Munoz. Within your mindset is where you can be and want to be.” Her mother also loves to say, “don’t let anyone make you feel little, just remember that they’re insecure that you’re the ‘coo’ person in the room (she means to say cool, but English is her second language). My mother is comedic and loving, she enjoys a goodtime and doesn’t care about being judged.” Staying confident and striving towards her goals has landed Munoz roles in national commercials as well as roles in a movie called ‘Book of Fire’, alongside the talented Carmen Electra, also she’s in ‘Made Guys’, and ‘Bug Out’

which are both in the process of filming. In addition, Munoz was the main model for LMAFO’s Party Rock and La Freak line for two years until LMFAO took a break.
