“BORAT,” MOVE OVER…
ENTER THE “REAL”
SHANNA
MAY! by JENNY WERTH
Shanna May is creating So-Cal worthy tidal waves with her ingenious TV Program and parlays into pageants. Already being aired in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties on the Community Access Channels, the CEO behind today’s newest genre of “enticing and meaningful TV” keeps us on our seats. The world is indeed her oyster… that’s why we had to catch up with this iridescent pearl before she left our shores! 12 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
Here we are offer an exclusive Q & A with the mastermind, Shanna May. She indulges our senses with her natural talent for connecting all of us that represent the lovely “melting pot” that defines America. Plus, she gives us pointers for how to celebrate our uniqueness while allowing each of the stars of our heritage to shine within the borders that make up the United States. And it doesn’t stop there; see, Shanna is here to show us that there’s A LOT more to Kazakhstan than the silliness (yet admittedly, funny scenes) in the celebrated movie “Borat.” For with Shanna May, we reveal a woman who is pure heart, total beauty and proud of her country! An aspiring actress, she already hosts a celebrated TV show. Her show “On the Planet of Culture with Shanna May” shines the spotlight on the gems from other cultures that make up our daily lives, all while celebrating their unique and unparalleled role in our American heritage. However, we must pause to applaude the caring heart that makes this woman a truly dazzling display of dignity, delight and darn-right beauty! From her efforts to unite all of us with respect and admiration for our differences, to her influences in a recent pageant, we’re thrilled to introduce you to the glamour and humility of Shanna May. And finally, thirdly, I realized I wasn’t getting any younger; therefore I wanted to create a legacy for my only son, Justin. I wanted him to remember that moment when I was dancing on stage, in complete ecstasy, and pass that on to his grandchildren. Honestly, I’m not sure what other people learn from their pageant experience, but I’ve learned that real beauty comes from the inside; the outside ‘look’ is truly just the “cover of the book.” But, this is the most essential lesson I’ve learned: when a person puts others ahead of their own needs, that person becomes the long-distance winner. People keep asking me if I’d consider participating in other beauty pageants. And I’d have to say probably not, because I now have found another powerful “outlet” through my TV Program titled “On the Planet of Cultural with Shanna May.” HW: What is it that makes you feel so compassionate and concerned about others? SM: You know, after the pageantry was over, I really felt lost. I just didn’t know what to do next. I didn’t want to dive into my routine days again: home-work-home. No, I wanted to do something special; something useful; I needed to be somebody! I realized that I had gained priceless knowledge about the cultures of so many diverse countries in the pageant and simply couldn’t let it be wasted. And that’s how I came up with

And, my third dream is to act in the TV hit comedy-drama series “Orange is the New Black.” The main reason I want to play in this series is because I want viewers to know how “nice people” would survive in jail. All my life I’ve been nice and respectful to myself and others; I’ve never used bad language and have never got into physical or verbal altercations. I come from an Asian country where I was taught to follow ‘proper manners.’ Therefore, I wonder how my character would act if I was sent to jail. I ask myself: What am I capable of in vulnerable situations? Would I be able to stand up for myself physically? What would I do without my favorite black cocktail dress? Would “orange clothes” fit me? It’s not my favorite color, but I don’t mind trying it on if it’ll help me learn something new in life. I realize I’d be a complete opposite to the other prisoners, and that’s what makes it so enticing.” I’ve sent my resume and headshots to those in charge of auditions for this series. We’ll see... HW: How can you best be supported? AM: Of course, I’d like to have people’s support! My TV show is an educational program and is designed for people of all ages, including children. If someone wishes to participate in my program and share the uniqueness of his or her country’s culture, I encourage them to contact me. I also hope people would be willing to support me by sponsoring my program or by helping me with its management. I’m open to any business suggestions and propositions.

Our guest, Lucy Alex, is a wellknown personality in the Russian-Los Angeles community where she’s a coveted TV-hostess. She continues her career in Hollywood, which started 20 years ago in her home city in the dazzling south of Russia…
HW: Lucy, did you always imagine yourself as a TV personality? LA: Yes, I came to a local TV channel in my home city, when I was only 19 years old with many dreams and imaginations. But, my dreams were crashed right after my first interview with the producer of that TV channel. She told me that my face was ‘inappropriate’ for the television screen, and that

I should try radio work, but for TV – NO WAY… So, I didn’t have any other choice, but to start my career at a radio station as a host and a DJ. However, after only a few months my face was ‘approved’ by the TV producer and I started to host many live-air TV shows almost daily. HW: That’s funny… You did not pass a face-control test? I think that all Russian women are genetically beautiful! LA: Yeah! Thank you! But, anyway, I reached my goal and got the job of my dreams by becoming the youngest radio and TV hostess in my home city. People started to recognize me in public places, took photos with me and asked for my autographs. I was involved as a media-person in all types of entertainment activities. For many years, I was one of the judges of my city’s beauty pageants; wrote many scripts for commercials and produced several documentaries. Plus, I did voice-overs for tons of audio productions. And I also still hosted a weekly live TV and radio show. HW: What kind of shows did you host and what were they about? LA: Well, I was multifunctional! I hosted music shows, talk shows, techno shows, interviewed business owners, artists, and other studio guests… Sometimes, I worked until the middle of the night because I hosted a latenight radio talk show… In other words, I practically lived at my job. I am sure that no one from show business is surprised to hear that… It’s a celebrity’s lifestyle.
HW: How about your personal life? If you spent almost half the night at work, were you able to find anyone who was able to tolerate that? LA: Nobody! That’s why I was single for a long time as any crazy workaholic would be. I didn’t have any chance to develop my personal life; I couldn’t start a family or have many dates… During the 90s in Russia we certainly didn’t have any virtual dating services or websites. And of course, we didn’t have Facebook! HW: I can’t believe that any brave man, who saw you on a TV screen, would not show any signs of affection. LA: Yes, sometimes they did, but I concentrated on my career and didn’t care much about that. HW: Okay, well that was almost 20 years ago…. Now, you are in Hollywood with tons of international experience. How do you plan to use your entertainment skills in our American reality? LA: Good question! It seemed difficult at a first glance, but I was surprised at how huge the Russianspeaking community is in Los Angeles! And I became certain, that here, in Hollywood, I would have my new TV studios, my new projects, and my new audience. So far, many of my goals and dreams have already came true! www.LucyAlex.net

24 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
HW: How does having someone with your expertise enable another to make their dreams a reality? You are able to remain focused on what you are good at, knowing that your online presence, branding, technology and marketing are being taken care of and you are getting the guidance you need to navigate the online world so your objectives can be met. HW: Why do so many people who are already successful still require your help?
“Tracy is today’s premiere online marketing and social media strategist!” HW: As a child you had some challenging situations occur; how did you channel that “difficulty” into positivity?
Successful people and companies got that way by surrounding themselves with the best people for whatever they need. If you want to have the best technology, web, and social media guidance on your team, either that does the work, or guides your in-house staff with the strategy to help accelerate your growth, I’m definitely someone you can turn to with confidence. HW: Are there any misconceptions about your business that you’d like to clarify? In general, online web, social media, is about branding and lead generation. The core skills of your business such as sales and general marketing don’t go away. This is a primary element that needs to be clearly established, and integrated to success strategies you currently have or should have.
I was the type of person that didn’t let anything stop me, even as a child. When I was in a full leg cast with multiple broken bones after getting hit by a car at the age of 3, I just worked with what I had, and continued to go after what I wanted. The same still holds for today. I believe things happen for a reason, so I take my lesson, situation, circumstances, or obstacle and go around it, over it, under it or through it.
HW: What are the most important pieces to your successpuzzle?
HW: What are the primary reasons someone would turn to you for help? Please write out the top ones.
HW: What most inspires you and why?
My ability to look at a person/company from a 360 degree holistic view point, so that the strategy I develop for someone in their online and marketing gives them the confidence to know that their growth has been addressed, as well as any immediate needs they have will be met. It’s a strategy that is built on in layers, so that the foundation is rock solid and works. Also my experience of having started a software company at the age of 19, marketing and developing brands and products for 30 years that are sold and distributed world wide, with the added skills of speaking in over 35 countries, appearing as a trusted resource for TV, a 7 Time International bestselling author, and as someone who has been on the internet for as long as it’s been around - you know you are with someone who delivers, has stability, reliability, is trustworthy and has outlasted and outperformed the competition to get to where I am for 3 decades.
Clarity on who I serve, what I do, and constantly continuing to educate myself on all the latest technologies and testing them within my own business before I introduce them to my clients. Then the application of persistence, focus and an unwavering commitment for my clients to succeed. What inspires me is the spiritual awakening that is happening, the courage others are exercising to get their messages out, the access we have to technology that allows us to reach millions in minutes with our message, and the knowingness that we can make this world a better place when we work together for positive change. COME MORNING
Naturally, the East Village in the heart of New York City is the ideal place to meet with the spectacular actress Elise Rovinsky. She’s made her mark in the industry and there’s no better way to get to know her than in the iconic lounge of the The Dirty French restaurant. This hotspot has a slight feeling of being in the Moulin Rouge district of Paris. It’s not as extravagant of course, but it does have the ecclectic French Cabaret interior design. Add that with a lovely ambiance and it becomes easy to see why people flock here in hoardes. From the moment Ellise passes the restaurant’s threshold, people turn around to stare. It’s as if they’re all silently questioning “who is this charismatic and elegant person who just made an entrance?” I stand up to greet her and diligent staff leads us to a table. Elise orders a salad; but I can’t help myself (got to let that diet go sometimes!), so I opt for the Duck L’orange (a favorite at this restaurant). Elise is a petite woman, but her personality is large. She’s full of an outgoing style and encompasses great integrity. In fact, she contains a positive aura that makes everybody feel happy when she’s in their company.

ER: Well, I like both because they are so different. For instance if I am on stage it is a new adventure every night depending on who is in the audience. Sometimes I feel I can control a sentence or scene and make it more powerful, or funnier if the audience is with me. Also, my fellow actors and I feed off each other and make the resulting work better. However, film lasts forever. The moments are captured for years to come while stage acting is here and now. HW: I have seen some of your work and you seem to have fabulous timing both in comedy and drama.
Japanese in another. To be honest, I love languages and have an easy time with accents and dialects. Elise dreamed of living and acting in New York from an early age. One summer she and her family were on vacation in Greece when a friend of her dad’s asked Elise what she wanted to do with her life. Elise expressed her passion to become an actress and live in New York City. The man said to me that he had an apartment in New York that I could rent, but I’d have to come right away. My parents gave me the best gift of all at that moment. They said “we don’t want you to go, but you have to.” So, in a few short weeks I was on my way to The Big Apple... the center of the universe. My journey had begun. HW: How did you support yourself in those early days? ER: Well, I was a waitress of course, like every actor should be! (Elise recalls this with a mischievous smile). And I took a summer class in acting where someone important from the Stella Adler Conservatory found me interesting. I was told I had a talent, and there was a place for me in the Graduate Program if I wanted it. Eventually, Elise completed the Conservatory Graduate Program at Stella Adler in New York where she had the legendary teacher Alice Winston.

“Why can’t you get a real job?” “Stop being so impractical.” These are words that every aspiring star will hear during their career. We are told as children that “we can be anything we want to in life.” We’re told to believe in ourselves, and 32 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
Noel VanBrocklin never took them to heart. Noel is a twenty-year-old girl who risked everything to follow her dream. Growing up in the Arizona desert, she began life a long way from stardom. Noel was orphaned from a young age and raised in foster care. She was forced to continually abandon her friends and schooling as she was
shuffled between dispassionate strangers and reluctant family. It would have been so easy to have given up, but she didn’t. Noel saved every penny she made until she was able to make the trip to Los Angeles. She didn’t know anyone except her boyfriend who moved with her. She didn’t have an agent, head shots, or a demo reel. She didn’t have any tools to help her besides online guides and an indomitable desire to become someone. But that’s all this amazing woman needed. “The world gets to choose where you start out,” Noel said “but not where you end up.” She began by building a portfolio of herself. Simple snapshots on her phone and constant submissions were enough for Noel to meet with aspiring photographers and acquire a few unprofessional head shots. She recorded herself giving a monologue and submitted it to every film casting in the city. Enough of them replied to her to begin building her credibility and give her samples of the quality of her work. With savvy and creativity, Noel kept gaining momentum. Every time she had a new photo, or was given a new dress, or acquired some footage from a student film she volunteered in, she started all over. New submissions, more contacts, better products. Her contagiously cheerful and down-to-earth personality was a refreshing change from the superficiality commonly associated with show business. That’s why supporters swiftly began rallying to her cause.

“I want to be hope. I don’t want to attract all of the ‘rich and famous’ people to sit at my table. I want the lost, and the confused, and the broken-hearted to hear me because that’s where I started out too. I want them to look at me and see proof that it can get better” However, none of this would mean anything if it weren’t for Noel’s remarkable talent. She took all of the pain, abandonment and confusion of her life and channeled it into the raw emotion she displays while acting. Seasoned casting directors were brought to tears with her moving speeches and photographers kept wanting her to come back for another shoot. Noel was everywhere.
In fact, some of her photographs
were so stunning that she began to attract the attention of bigger names.
Even three time Emmy-award-winner
Romaine Markus volunteered to do her hair and makeup for a competition after seeing her photos. She’s worked with legendary actor Ed Asner, and immediately attracted the attention of his personal publicist who spotted her potential as a rising star. Five short months after moving to Los Angeles, she’s already becoming everything she set out to be. Noel VanBrocklin is representing “Miss Russia” in the international beauty pageant “Miss Asia America,” and she’s already earned the lead role in a trilogy of feature films titled “Witchcraft.” Plus, she’s the lead female in a web series titled “Nostalgia.” “I never wanted to be just another celebrity. I don’t want to be a scandal. I don’t want to be something to gossip about. I want to be hope. I don’t want to attract all of the ‘rich and famous’ people to sit at my table. I want the lost, and the confused, and the brokenhearted to hear me because that’s where I started out too. I want them to look at me and see proof that it can get better.”

Baron Jay Littleton Jr. is more than an actor, entrepreneur, or filmmaker, he’s a philanthropist. Littleton is excited to talk about his Summer Arts Filmmaker Internship Program for inner-city students that will launch this summer through the “Baron Jay Foundation,” and share the steps he took to get his latest independent film “The Condo,” to the big screen. A walk down memory lane one afternoon inspired Littleton to create the Summer Arts Filmmaker Internship Program (SAFIP), a job training program that will teach high school students in Los Angeles from low- and moderate-income families about film production. “One afternoon, I came across an award I earned from the Detroit Summer Video Workshop, Littleton reminisces. “This program taught me about producing documentaries and helped me to submit my film to film festivals. This led to other opportunities in the entertainment business. A little voice in my head told me that I could provide the same opportunity.” The SAFIP job training program will give students a chance to work with professionals from the entertainment industry. They will learn to develop, write, produce and submit a sitcom to be aired on a national cable network. “This program is designed for students who may otherwise have no exposure to the entertainment industry. There are so many youth who have been stifled by the lack of opportunity, even though it’s right in their backyards. We must keep the life cycle going. If we stop giving, we stop living.” Littleton confesses. The SAFIP has partnered with Mayor Eric Garcetti’s program Hire L.A.’s Youth to elevate student’s community and quality of life through art and cultural diversity. The program will provide opportunities after graduation and encourage the students to return and become mentors and graduates of the program will even be considered for positions on his slate of films.

Baron Jay Foundation’s twelve week Summer Arts Filmmaker Internship Program and its 40-member team has joined President Barack Obama and SAGAFTRA in A Call to Arts: The One Million Mentor Hours Pledge, to reach out to young people pursuing careers in the cinematic arts. This national effort aims to generate more than a million hours of mentoring over the next three years. Students will job shadow a variety of professional entertainment industry teachers and administrators, on the set of a television sitcom entitled “MI CASA MI CASA” written by Kantz, 36 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
“MI CASA MI CASA” is about an African American couple, Metro Train Driver, and ultra conservative George Mayweather and his elementary school wife, Gladys Mayweather lives are turned upside down when their daughter Kimberly returns to the nest with her very liberal “Mexican” husband, Ramone Cervantes. Stanley and Ramone clash about politics, race, social agendas and Government. The two can’t agree on anything, and Stanley’s peaceful abode is about to get a little Latin spice! Littleton commented that President Obama’s daughter Malia Obama is interested in filmmaking and had the golden summer
job opportunity to work on Halle Berry’s show “EXTANT” on CBS, produced by prominent Obama donor Steven Spielberg. Obama helped with computer shop alignments and assisted crew by blocking people from walking through scenes during shooting. The director also let her slate a take. Obama commented on her first job: “My first time. This is a big deal.” Littleton hopes his summer program will similarly inspire L.A. students. “When students, parents and teachers hear about our program, they get very excited and asked how much it costs, and I tell them it’s free. They can’t believe it. Summer programs at USC, New York Film Academy, LA Film School and others are very expensive. The demographics we serve can’t afford that cost, nor do they have insider relationships such as Malia Obama’s.” Getting to this point in his career didn’t come easy for Littleton, but, if it wasn’t for the help of a program like the Detroit Video Workshop, Littleton admits that he may not have figured it out on his own. Soon, Littleton found himself starring in numerous television shows and commercial and living the Hollywood dream. He gained a lot of insight while executive producing the award-winning suspense thriller, “Safe House.” Armed with an amazing team, and with distribution options, Littleton is looking forward to the release of his newest comedy “The Condo,” about four married friends who secretly buy a bachelor pad. Being an independent producer comes with its highs and lows, but, he knew early on that he had to think outside the box. So, he came up with a slightly unconventional way of financing his films and it worked. “We’re (actors) usually waiting for someone to give us work. So, I thought why not invest in ourselves? We can take the capital we’d spend on classes for two months and instead invest it in a film we believe in and use the project to leverage future work.” says Littleton Wearing so many hats can be tasking, but, the upside is that you can run your ship the way you want. He prides himself in trusting his team and not being a micro-manager. The outcome always overrides anything else and the feeling of accomplishment when the final project has wrapped is priceless. “We are currently working on our next film “Deadly Reunion,” be on the lookout for “The Condo,” in theatres and on Netflix in 2016,” says Littleton. “We will recruit our first students into the SAFIP program this summer; so, tell everyone you know about it.” I also learned that Mr. Baron Littleton was married on the “Price is Right” on CBS by Drew Carey on March 31, 2015 to Tamani and they won the showcase. You can see Baron this summer on “America’s Got Talent” Season 10 on NBC on Tuesdays with his group “Chippin Doubles.” For more information please go to www.baronjayfoundation.org Written by Tanisha Quilter-Williams, author, reporter, social media expert
