MANAGING EDITOR Jenny Werth DIR. OF MARKETING Launy Rhem

Dearest Readers, “Hollywood Weekly Magazine” is excited to showcase Nollywood’s superstars. Each of them offer such a unique talent and contribution to the world of entertainment. Speaking of entertainment, you’ll also notice that “Hollywood Weekly” has added some new exciting features. We hope our coverage on health, international fashions, hot-spot restaurants and even cool ‘celeb-tweets’ will add to your enjoyment! We also take a look at a World War II poster girl who quite literally kept G.I.’s alive with hope to return home safely. With over 94-million “Get There and Back” campaign posters plastered all over the world, Margie Stewart’s passing has caused the entire nation to take a moment of silence. Why? Because we must remember the veterans of a war that helped light the way to the freedom we all enjoy today. Plus, we have some exciting coverage of our favorite celebs at the Cannes Film Festival. And remember, summer is just around the corner, so get that bikini out, or not- a cool tunic will work just as well- and get ready to lather on those self-tanners (and killer shades!) Most of all, may you enjoy the gorgeous weather and remember that at “Hollywood Weekly” we’ve got ‘Everything-Hollywood’ covered!

HONORS I

JOHN CUSACK

t looks like John Cusack really is one of the most likeable men in Hollywood. “The Raven” star was joined not just by his sister Joan, but his former co-stars Jack Black and Billy Bob Thornton at at the unveiling of his star on the Walk of Fame last month. The “Grosse Point Blank” star looked delighted to be surrounded by his friends and family as he enjoyed the applaudes at the special ceremony. The quartet happily posed together as they waited for the showpiece event to kick off in earnest. And when it did, the smile on 45-year-old John’s face could not be wider. Of course that could also have been because his “Toy Story” star sister had delivered a crowd pleasing speech in honour of her little brother. John said it was working with other actors that motivated him to keep active for almost 30 years. “I love working with actors, I love being around them, they’re such great spirits. To the best of my knowledge, I’ve tried to screw my career up

as much as I possibly could, but even with all my best efforts to screw it up, I managed to have lasting friendships, and some of the best friends I’ve ever met in the business.” His friends were out in force, with Jack Black, Billy Bob and Dan Ackroyd all in attendance. John starred with the former in the 2000 hit “High Fidelity.” He has also featured alongside Oscar-winner Billy Bob in several other memorable films. The jubilant actor was happy to pose with fans as he enjoyed his moment on the famous Hollywood walkway. There was a special moment when a Raven, which just happens to be the movie he is currently starring in, landed on his star for a photo opportunity. Appropriately enough, the actor seemed to be wearing just a hint of eyeliner. Considering he is starring as Edgar Allen Poe in the Gothic-tinged film, it was the perfect compliment to his jet black suit. He even wore a black belt, a subtle hint at the fact he holds a sixth degree rating at that level in kickboxing. MAY

BEFORE THEY WERE FAMOUS

I

’M NOT AFRAID OF SUCCESS BECAUSE THAT BEATS THE HELL OUT OF FAILURE. IT’S BEING IN THE MIDDLE THAT SCARES ME!” - ROBERT DOWNEY JR. + NOVEMBER 1988

8 - HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

WHAT I LE ARNED FROM

ROBERT

DOWNEY JR. PHOTO AND ARTICLE BY: KAREN BYSTEDT

Robert Downey Jr. once said, “I’m not afraid of success because that beats the hell out of failure. It’s being in the middle that scares me!” Maybe what resurrected Downey from his years in the depths of a sordid past, which included rehab, prison, and Hollywood’s career penalty box, was his love of life. In Downey’s own words: “I love life, I would never give up. I put myself here. I’m certainly not going to cop out, and I really feel blessed that there is some Gabriel, or whatever entity, that is watching over me.” (November 1988, quoted from my book “They Dared To Dream.”) Downey’s brilliance has never been in question. When I first met him at a reggae club in LA, I was struck by his intelligent humor and charisma. I spent time getting to know him through numerous phone conversations, where he poured his heart out about his deep feelings of contradiction between demons of pain and liberation, while seeking higher enlightenment. Robert was reading books like Way of the “Peaceful Warrior” and exploring spirituality as a way of redemption. At the time, Robert was a rising star in Hollywood, with films like the “Pick Up Artist” and “Less Than Zero” under his belt. Downey explained to me how a woman came up to him and told him her two friends went into rehab after seeing “Less Than Zero.” He said, “I got chills up and down my spine and thought, ‘fuck, now I know why I do what I do.’” Robert Downey Jr. is an inspiration, because even though he went to the depths of his own pain and addiction, through his love of life and deep sense of trust he was able to pull himself up, and use his beliefs in a positive way. His star is shining brighter than ever now with his recent hit films such as “The Avengers,” and “Sherlock Holmes.” Now we’re all just waiting for what’s sure to be his brilliant performance in “Iron Man 3.” Geoff Boucher from the “LA Times” October 9, 2011 cover article aptly described Downey as a “wickedly smart guy who dances on life’s edges.” Today we see an elated RDJ married to Ms. Susan Downey since ‘05 and excelling at what he’s always done best: acting. Karen collaborated with artists Tonia Calderon and Logan Anderson for an exhibit at The Arclight Pasadena running now through July 2012. The show features Karen’s photographs combined with unique mixed media to create one-of-a-kind art pieces. It’s a show that dazzles the senses- it’s full of sensitivity, creativity and passion for exceptional photography. She has appeared on many TV interviews and speaking engagements, and continues to photograph up-and-coming actors and models, while living in Hollywood with her husband Fredrik and their bulldog, Gunnar. She has recently released a book on actors, “They Dared to Dream,” with early photographs and inspirational interviews as an eBook, available on Amazon Kindle, iPad, Nook and all eBook formats and as a hard copy at the Hollywood ArcLight. Pregnancy and Motherhood with

Alyson Hannigan

Alyson Hannigan, her husband Alexis Denisof and their adorable daughter Satyana are one of our favorite celebrity families. And now we have even more reason to celebrate: the “How I Met Your Mother” star is currently expecting the couple’s second child this summer. Alyson opens up about remaining mum on the baby’s gender, her “fantastic” and “hilarious” daughter Satyana who turns 3 next month, and her plans for a second home birth. “I think that the home is the best place for me to feel comfortable.” CBS: Congratulations on your second pregnancy! How are you feeling? AH: “Thank you! I’m feeling tired, but great. We’re so excited! Satyana is going to be a fantastic big sister and we’re really looking forward to that.” CBS: When are you due? Do you know the gender yet?

AH: “Honestly, when she was younger I didn’t want to share. I wanted her to have all of me. And now she’s a little girl and so much more independent and self-sufficient. I see that she was ready, which made me ready. I was an only child and I hated it, so I always wanted her to have a sibling. But I just wasn’t ready when she was a baby. I wanted to give her those years.”

CBS: Are you planning another home birth with a midwife? Did you receive lots of negative comments about your choice to have a home birth?

CBS: What are some of your favorite motherhood moments with Satyana? AH: “There’s so many in a day. It’s hard to choose any of them, but they’re all so special. I love her perspective on life and I love getting to be a part of her world. She’s just such a sweet, sweet person and I love the things that come out of her mouth. She’s just so full of personality and so lovely. [Motherhood is] just the greatest thing ever!”

AH: “Yes, that is the plan. Hopefully all will go well. And yes, we had lots of comments about it. And we had the doctor that scared us tremendously. There was definitely more concern the first time around. For me, that was just the perfect place. I am absolutely terrified of hospitals. So I think that the home is the best place for me to feel comfortable. I had a midwife, her assistant and a doula. It will be the same again this time.”

CBS: We just saw some pictures of Satyana dressed up like a princess. You don’t seem like a princess-pushing kind of mama!

CBS: How’s Satyana doing?

Satyana

CBS: Is Satyana potty trained? AH: “During the day she’s - I want to say - 100 percent potty trained. We haven’t had an accident in a long time. But we haven’t started the nighttime yet. I’ll pick a day, but not while I’m working because I’m already sleepdeprived!”

12 - HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

AH: “I’ve been trying to figure out the best birthday party. But I think we might actually just do a trip to Disneyland with a few close friends instead of a big party. I think that would be really special for her and for all of us.” CBS: Awhile ago, you said you weren’t sure about having a second child. What sealed the deal for you and Alexis?

AH: “I’m due in the summer. We know [the gender] but we haven’t announced it to the world, but Satyana might because she’ll tell anybody. But for now, we’re keeping that to ourselves.”

AH: “She’s fantastic; she’s hilarious! She’s going to be 3 next month and she’s just the best. She’s very excited about the baby and already showing signs of being a fantastic big sister. She rubs and talks to my belly. It’s so sweet.”

CBS: Do you have any plans for her upcoming third birthday party?

AH: “I know! We support whatever she’s into. I thought it wasn’t going to happen because she didn’t really care about clothes, and then one day it was all about whatever she wants to wear! She went to a friend’s house and they had a lot of dress-up clothes. And that was it - she was set! So we got her a couple little princess dresses and she loves them! She picks them out all the time and insists on wearing them, like when we go get our little Boba drinks.I support whatever she wants. If she wants to wear striped tights with a tutu, then she can do that. I love her expressions, so I embrace it. As long as she’s going to be warm enough, she can wear whatever she wants.”

Celebrities Give

Parenting Advice Who do you turn to for parenting advice? Your own mother, your friends or other family members? Or maybe you look to celebrity parents for their thoughts on parenting? Angelina Jolie advises parents to let their children “express themselves,” while Gisele Bündchen feels all new moms should be legislated to breastfeed. Take a look through our list of 10 celebrities and their top parenting advice.

Move over Beyoncé. New Mom Jessica Simpson

New mama Jessica Simpson gave birth May 1 to daughter Maxwell Drew Johnson in a suite that includes salon services, a personal assistant and flatscreen TVs, sources confirm. It seems Jess and family enjoyed their new baby girl in a luxurious, threebedroom deluxe maternity suite at Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles, Calif. which reportedly costs $3,784 per day. Some of the suite amenities include a “mother’s assistant” who attends to the needs of you and your baby during your hospital stay, a stereo, a DVD player, full-sized bathtubs, complimentary chilled juices, basket of fresh fruit and muffins and an in-room refrigerator. There are also salon services offered ranging from mani-pedis to hair cuts and blow-outs.

• Angelina Jolie: Academy Award-winning actress Angelina Jolie and her longtime love Brad Pitt are parents to six kids. And although they have such a big brood, their 5-year-old sure knows how to make headlines with her tomboy image! Angie has said that Shiloh is “fascinating,” and elaborated on the fact that her daughter dresses “like a little dude.” I would never be the kind of parent to force somebody to be something they are not,” Angelina said. “I think that is just bad parenting... Children should be allowed to express themselves in whatever way they wish without anybody judging them because it is an important part of their growth.”

• Jennifer Garner: Jennifer became a mother-of-three earlier this week

when she welcomed her third child, son Samuel, with husband Ben Affleck. She is one of our favorite celebrity moms year after year, and when she talks about role modeling for her daughters Violet, 6, and Seraphina, 3, it’s easy to see why she gets the popular vote. “I try really hard to put my phone down [ever since] my daughter pretended to take something out of one of her little purses and was like, ‘I’ve got an email – hang on one second,’” Jen said.

• Mayim Bialik: We first loved her as Blossom, now we love Mayim

Bialik as one of the most hands-on moms in Hollywood. The mom-of-two opened up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about her views on attachment parenting, homeschooling and breastfeeding on demand until the child self-weans. When speaking about her new book on attachment parenting, “Beyond the Sling,” Mayim shared some advice for all parents. “All parents should receive at least a minimal education from doctors, nurses and all sorts of people in medical positions to understand why people make decisions that lead to choices like attachment parenting.”

• Michael J. Fox: The father-of-four often speaks out on the importance

of family. “Always be available to your kids,” Michael advised. “Because if you say, ‘Give me five minutes, give me ten minutes,’ it’ll be 15, it’ll be 20. And then when you get there, the shine will have worn off whatever it is they wanted to share with you. I’ve never gotten up to see something one of my kids wanted to show me and not been rewarded.”

• Gisele Bündchen: Model mom Gisele has been known to speak her

mind! Seven months after welcoming her son Benjamin with husband Tom Brady, the Brazilian beauty declared that breastfeeding should be made mandatory by law. “Some people here (in the US) think they don’t have to breastfeed, and I think ‘Are you going to give chemical food to your child when they are so little?’ I think there should be a worldwide law, in my opinion, that mothers should breastfeed their babies for six months,” Gisele said.

The happy mama posted a birth announcement on her personal website officially announcing her wonderful news. “Eric and I are elated to announce the birth of our baby girl Maxwell Drew Johnson,” she wrote. “We are so grateful for all the love, support and prayers we have received. This has been the greatest experience of our lives!!!”

Celebrity Moms Pregnant Under 30 Some say over 40 is too old for pregnancy, while others argue that under 30 is too young. Let’s take a look within Hollywood and see who has entered motherhood in their teens and 20s. Snooki: In the worst-kept secret in reality TV history, Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, 24, recently confirmed that she is pregnant and engaged to the father, beau of one and a half years Jionni LaValle. And the “Jersey Shore” star and LaValle, also 24, know just what onlookers are thinking. “I have different priorities now,” the reformed party girl said. “I don’t care what anybody else thinks. As long as I know I’m ready and he’s ready.” Miranda Kerr: On January 6, 2011, Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr, then 27, welcomed their first child, son Flynn. In our 4th Annual Readers’ Choice Awards, baby Flynn topped the charts as our favorite new tot in Tinseltown! [Flynn is] “the best thing I’ve ever done!,” Miranda gushed. “Every day it just gets better,” she added. Britney Spears: When pop princess Britney Spears was 22, she wed her second husband Kevin Federline. At the tender age of 23, Brit gave birth to her first child, Sean Preston. Just one year later, the “Oops!... I Did It Again” singer welcomed her second son, Jayden James. Brit has opened up about how motherhood has changed her life. “As a mother, the one thing that always goes through your head is, You’re never enough. You never can be enough—or do enough—for your kids.” Visit www.celebritybabyscoop. com for daily celebrity baby news!

DESMOND ELLIOT

Meet E4 PR Stars And Some Of

Nollywood’s Most Prolific A-List Actors & Actresses: Desmond Elliott, Monalisa Chinda, Jackie Appiah & Joseph Benjamin.

E4 PR (Best Entertainment, Artiste Management & PR Company Award Winner 2011 - AAMMA), in conjunction with “Hollywood Weekly Magazine,” is the first to profile and feature their Multiple Award Winning A-List Nollywood Stars internationally. Indeed, after reading about these super talented four stars, you’ll agree they’re definitely worthy of international accolade; especially since many of their movies have been premiered worldwide, including the United States and the United Kindgom, and some of them have been featured with Hollywood stars. With enviable endorsement deals as well, they are all University graduates and have made Nollywood very proud. Meet the talented four stars and see what Egor Efiok (CEO of E4 PR) has to say about each of them. 18 - HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

E

gor Efiok says: Multi-talented Desmond Elliott, who started his acting career in 1999, has been nick-named the Denzel Washington of Nollywood. Undeniably one of the best actors in Nigeria, Desmond has featured in hundreds of films, too many to list here and many of which were major hits. From a popular leading actor, Desmond continued to evolve steadily in his career, winning so many Best Actor awards along the way, that it was inevitable when he ventured into movie producing in 2007, followed by movie directing in 2009, also winning Best Producer and Best Director Awards. Almost all the movies that Desmond has produced and directed have been Blockbusters and he has recently been nominated in the category of Best Directing for “Kiss N’ Tell,” in the Nollywood Movies Awards (NMA) The ceremony is taking place next month. Please visit link: http://e4pr.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/nma-press-conference-press-release.html “Kiss N’ Tell” was also separately nominated in three different categories.

DESMOND ELLIOTT

Extremely good-looking, polished and dapper, Desmond Elliott commands the Brad Pitt/George Clooney kind of public reaction. This ladies man is off the chain and cannot even eat in public without being mobbed! Happily married with four children (two sets of twins), Desmond Elliott has worked judiciously and tirelessly to carve a niche for himself not only as a good actor, movie producer & director, but also as a good role model to the society. Despite his superstar status, Des still continues to maintain a clean-cut life style. He is incredibly focused and discipled; and he tries to find a balance between fatherhood and his demanding work schedule. Indeed, a lot of Desmond’s fans will be surprised to discover here that he also has the natural Brad Pitt super-dad genes in him and no matter how hectic his work schedule is, it is important to him to give his children their morning bath and breakfast whenever he is at home, before he jets off to his movie set. Desmond’s contribution to the world of acting in Nigeria was recognized when he was made an Ambassador for Glo (Globacom), the telecommunications giant, which comes with its perks and is one of the most high profile brand endorsements to have in Africa. This honour is usually bestowed upon the best icons from different genres of the African Entertainment industry like acting, music et al. Also an avid golfer, Desmond provides support for orphans and homeless children through his charity, Desmond Elliot Foundation http://desmondelliotfoundation.webs.com Desmond’s recent movie projects, which he also starred in and directed, “Kiss N’ Tell” & “I’ll Take My Chances,” are still premiering worldwide, while “Catwalq” (Glamour Soap TV Series) debuted last week on Nigerian TV. Desmond Elliott and some other Nigerian stars, are filming Tony Abulu’s “Doctor Bello,” alongside Vivica A. Fox, Isaiah Washington, Bern Cohen, Victor Brown, Andrea Leigh and Jimmy Jean-Louis. MONALISA CHINDA

E

gor Efiok says: Monalisa Chinda is definitely the Halle Berry of Nollywood. Widely famed as the darling of Nigeria and referred to as ‘beautiful soul’, due to her fragile sweet demeanour, Monalisa, who started acting in 1996 and debuted as movie producer in 2011, has also featured in over 100 movies that are too many to list here, winning so many awards, with her most celebrated ones being, Afro Hollywood Award for Best Actress in 2009, Most Outstanding African Actress 2010 (Afro Australian Music and Movie Awards) and Face Of Nollywood 2011. Monalisa Chinda is among the select few to be honoured with a Glo (Globacom) Ambassadorial endorsement and was crowned Carnival Queen - Face Of Port Harcourt 2011. Strikingly beautiful and incredibly soulful, talented Monalisa and mum to pretty Tamarlily, is often described as ‘beautiful inside and out’, as her aura depicts, and her most distinctive and remarked-upon traits are her lovely green eyes and sexy pout. She has had so many ‘beautiful’ accolades, that I have lost count. Also a Domestic Violence survivor, Monalisa garnered much respect, as her bold decision of speaking out against this normally taboo/stereotype subject in a 3rd world country, helped raise awareness and influenced rehabilitation for victims. Monalisa spends a lot of her free time campaigning against Domestic Violence, promoting & making donations to Autism Awareness and Motherless Babies Homes. You can see excerpts from here: http://www.youtube. com/watch?v=yqJGxlopgro and http://e4pr.blogspot. co.uk/2011/09/monalisa-chinda-donates-to-patrick.html Monalisa, who keeps fit with Cardio Salsa work out and daily runs, has become a source of inspiration and entertainment to well-loving Nigerians and others alike. Monalisa produced and starred in romantic comedy, “Kiss N’ Tell,” which has recently been nominated by Nollywood Awards (NMA) in three different categories of Best Movie, Best Cinematography & Best Original Screenplay. See it here: http://e4pr.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/nma-press-conference-press-release.html Monalisa Chinda also produced and starred in the glamour soap tv series, “Catwalq,” which has an “Ugly Betty” meets “Gossip Girl” kind of theme about it and has been making huge waves since its debut last month on Nigerian TV. JACKIE APPIAH

gor Efiok says: Jackie Appiah, Ghana’s biggest and most sought after female actress, can best be described as the Angelina Jolie of Ghana. Her multiple awards include a prestigious African Movie Academy Award (AMAA) for Best Supporting Actress in 2007. Widely acclaimed as one of the best actresses in Africa, easy going and soft spoken Jackie, is also Ghana’s original sexpot. Beautiful seductress, talented, daring and not afraid to take on controversial movie roles. As a result, she has a massive fan base. This happily married mum of one beauty, has a way of slipping into any given role with captivating ease and expertly weaves her way through them so convincingly, that she never fails to invoke an emotional response from her audience. Jackie recently starred as the lead female character in the soon to be premiered movie, “Turning Point,” in the US, with Hollywood actors Joe Estevez, Ernie Hudson, Cynda Williams, K.D. Aubert and Todd Bridges. Below are two different remarks that the director of the film, Niyi Towolawi, made about Jackie in a recent interview here.” “Jackie Appiah is simply phenomenon. I have never seen a case where a subdued, professional crew would break into applaud take after take as Jackie was able to conjure up. There was a highly charged scene that I knew that regardless of how much rehearsal or blocking would have to be largely improvised, and that’s where the Nollywood actor owns the stage. Jackie would repeatedly hit marks, while stumbling backwards and in a headlock, all the while making goading noises to be beaten further.” “I would love to offer Jackie Appiah $2m for a role that takes a year to prepare for; that’s how Oscars are won.” Jackie is also one of the recognised African celebrities to be made a Glo (Globacom) Ambassador and was last month chosen by the telecommunications giant to be the face of their new TV ad. Jackie stars in the television commercial, currently running on CNN among other international television networks, selling their green and white brand to the world. JOSEPH BENJAMIN

E

gor Efiok says: Fast-rising actor, Joseph Benjamin, is truly a force to be reckoned with. His swift rise to A-list stardom in such a short time, almost defines the expression, in the twinkling of an eye, in its true meaning and has earned him the new title of Nollywood’s famous heartthrob. Joe has been nominated in the Best Actor category for almost every film that he has featured in within the last two years and went on to win the Golden City Award for Excellence in 2010, followed by Best New Actor, Best Actor Of The Year & Sexiest TV Personality Awards, respectively, in 2011. Joe has recently been nominated for two different films as well, for Best Actor In A Leading Role (“Kiss N’ Tell”) and Best Actor In A Leading Role (“Tango With Me”) by Nollywood Movies Awards. You can read it here: http://e4pr.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/nma-press-conference-press-release.html Joseph Benjamin, who also plays tennis, is like a mix of Taye Diggs and Jamie Foxx. He is such a charmer and is seriously funny, he’ll have you in stitches in no time. Also noted for his strong screen presence, Joe’s talents know no bounds. Hot, handsome, sexy and extremely eloquent, female fans have to be prised off him when he goes out in public! Joe was the lead actor in recently premiered movies, “Tango With Me,” “Kiss N’ Tell” and “Mr & Mrs;” and recently showcased his versatility in the soon to be released movie, “Stripped,” where he played lead as a forlorn character trapped in a wheel chair. See link to photos of Joe’s handsome face being bashed on set: http://e4pr.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/joseph-benjamin-becomes-reclusive-after.html Joseph Benjamin has carved out his own niche, firmly establishing himself as a brand to keep an eye out for. HOLLYWOOD ICON

Poster Girl Margie Stewart

24 - HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

Hollywood says Goodbye to its WWII

POSTER GIRL By Dana Elizabeth

During World War II, G.I.’s kept their spirits high gazing at posters of the beautiful Margie Stewart. The pin-up poster girl was indeed lovely, but in a sweet girl-next-door fashion. Truly, without undue flash or flair, she was many a G.I.’s shining star with over 94-million posters distributed throughout the war which lasted from 1939 to 1945. In fact, Margie’s “Get There and Back” campaign posters kept G.I.’s dreaming of the day they’d return to their own sweethearts. Surprisingly enough, even Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt herself tried to put the campaign to an end because she was worried that the posters would make the soldiers “too home sick.” But after countless letters poured in asking about the beautiful girl in the “Get There and Back” campaigns, Roosevelt relented and nine more posters were commissioned. The first original three were the work of noted Hollywood photographer, George Hurell; also known for his glamorous portraits of starlets during the 50s. He even had the opportunity to photograph Margie for “Esquire Magazine.” By the end of 1943 Margie’s visage was one of the most widely recognized faces even though her posters always portrayed an innocence about them. Each one encouraging G.I.’s to purchase war bonds so they could afford housing upon their return home. Her auburn hair, delicate eyes and wholesome charm had wives at home in an up-roar and soldiers falling to their knees. Margie had a style that was all her own. She was classic and beautiful yet considered less erotic than the likes of Betty Grable, notorious for her “Million dollar legs” or Veronica Lake known as the “peek-a-boo” girl. Margie, who was known to have many suitors including heart-throb Errol Flynn, met and married Captain Jerry Jeroske in July of 1945 while on tour entertaining the troops in Europe. So heartbroken were soldiers everywhere that they cried out: “Margie how could you?” in the military newspaper “Stars and Stripes.” Jeroske, who later changed his name to Johnson, had known Margie for only a handful of weeks. But that was enough for Margie. Only a year later in 1946, the couple had a son named Stephen and remained married for nearly 58-years until Jerry’s death in 2003. Jerry and Margie made their home in Studio City, CA. where Jerry produced shows at the historic Hollywood Bowl, including such acts as, “The Beatles,” Judy Garland, “The Rolling Stones,” and Frank Sinatra. Naturally, Margie continued as a supporter of the troops and worked as a humanitarian and patriot by volunteering at the UCLA Medical Center for 30 years. Margie loved receiving requests for signed photos and tried to honor each one. She retained her good looks and wholesome charm until the very end. All while living a life of grace and poise. After 92 beautiful years, Hollywood said goodbye to our only official WWII Poster girl on April 26th at Providence St. Joseph’s hospital in Burbank, California. Surrounded by her close family, Margie Stewart or “Mungy” as her family and friends so lovingly called her, peacefully passed away.

Originally from Wabash, Indiana, a small town boasting nearly 10,000 residents was where Margie got her girl-next-door charm and down-to-earth personality. When asked once why she thought she never became a super star, “The U.K.Telegraph” quoted her, “The truth was I never wanted to be a star. I still wanted to be me.” It was that small town appeal that caught the eye of an advertising executive that started her career. While at Indiana University Margie was elected freshman princess, a title that came along with a free trip to Chicago. While there she was asked to pose for an ad campaign for Johnson Outboard Motors. From there, Stewart went on to become a department store model in Chicago and then relocated to Los Angeles where she was signed as a starlet with RKO pictures. She boasted, “I was awarded a contract for 75 dollars a week.” Margie appeared in 20 films all together, none of which brought her the recognition that the “Margie Posters” did. But that was the way she liked it. Margie’s film roles were small and some not even credited at the time but to the thousands of G.I.’s during WWII, Margie Stewart was the biggest star of all. And, it has been an honor and privilege to have called her my grandmother. In her final moments here on earth, she stated how very proud she was to have the family she had. How wonderful it was to have three beautiful grandchildren and especially to have been able to call so many brave young men “her boys.” The truth is, we couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful, and passionate grandmother, whom we hope to continue to make proud for the remainder of our lives. This one’s for you, Mungy. - Your grandaughter, Dana Elizabeth Our poster girl with the troops

INTERNATIONAL STYLE

FASHION DREAMS DESIGNED IN GHANA BY: MEAGAN SARGENT

WITH A SENSE OF HUMOR, KIND HEART, AND COURAGE TINA TANGALAKIS IS A TRUE HOLLYWOOD GEM WHO HAS BEEN CHALLENGING THE INDUSTRY WHILE MAKING HER MARK AS NOT ONLY A DESIGNER BUT ALSO A ROLE MODEL.

T

ina Tangalakis started out with a dream of becoming a famous costume designer. Little did she know this ‘dream’ was soon to be her reality. Tangalakis began working at the Paramount lot on Roswell as the Costume Designer’s Assistant. She also worked at other studios as a Costume Designer on various independent films and as a stylist on multiple commercials. After three years of designing clothes, Tangalakis decided to stop, and refocus her passion and talent. Oblivious to the fact that the journey she was about to embark on would be a wild rollercoaster of emotions and triumph, Tangalakis followed her heart and traveled over to Ghana solely with the purpose for volunteering. With a desire to ‘give back,’ she realized there was much more to life than “finding a pair of socks that matched,” and became a teacher and volunteer at the ‘Happy Kids Orphanage.’ Happy Kids Orphanage was founded in 1995 in order to provide housing and schooling for the wide array of orphans and underprivileged children in the local area of Ghana. Volunteers and workers work around the clock in an attempt to keep these children off the streets and provide them with the proper tools such as an education that will enable them to rise out of poverty. Although the orphanage is able to assist a few, it’s not possible to address the needs of the entire community. Through constant efforts including improved infrastructure, innovative programming and

educational as well as skills training, Happy Kids Orphanage is able to help and transform the lives of many children. Additionally, it spreads its vital message, vision, and value across the region. Ghana is a place full of energy, life, and color. Tangalakis volunteered and spent most of her time in the village of Hohoe. While walking the streets of Ghana and taking in the beautiful scenery, fabric, and textiles, Tangalakis recalls coming across a seamstress that was waiting for work. Quickly she purchased the vibrant and exuberant fabric, and asked the seamstress to make four or five purses to take back home as a souvenir. Neither of the two women were aware of how life-changing this moment would be. But once Tangalakis saw the finished product, she knew this was exactly where she was meant to be. Quickly acknowledging the fact that these beautiful bags could be sold in the United States, it was then when Tangalakis found her destiny. Using every dollar in her savings, and starting from the ground up, Tangalakis had a great foundation in Ghana and was able to get a supportive team to help make her dream a reality. With a dedicated group of seamstresses she launched her company in Ghana, and Della was born! Unparalleled to other brands today, Della not only provided those in Ghana with a stable job and source of income, but also offered skills training and an educational program. In Ghana everyone hires certified seamstresses who are trained. But thanks to Tangalakis, at Della, the certified seamstress not only become trained, but she also teaches

and trains new seamstresses which gives them a higher quality and skills set. “This is done to empower women to be team leaders,” Tangalakis says, “this is actually pretty unheard of, and quite scandalous over there.” She also has a teacher that comes out twice a week and teaches literacy courses, such as reading and writing. Humanitarianism at its finest, Tangalakis delivers tools Ghanaians can use in the future to assist them in getting out of the economic crisis Ghana is in today. Currently Della has 20 employees that help her put together the masterpieces that we see today. Each employee is educated, paid, and receives social security benefits. Within the year, Tangalakis hopes to expand their education to the entire village. “This has taken a lot of hard work, under three years I have traveled to Ghana six times,” says designer Tangalakis. I consider myself to be very fortunate to have met such an amazing business partner, Nii Addotey who believes in this as well. Without him it wouldn’t be what it is.” Nii Addotey serves as her production manager, and handles the logistical side such as sourcing fabrics and managing the team and all business aspects in Ghana. Addotey had already created the business plan, and she trusts him with making the bags and ensuring the business runs according to plan. When asked how Tangalakis’ parents initially felt about Della and the journey she had decided to embark on, along with her inspiration, she responded, “My parents have been nothing but

And as far as my inspiration, it has been humanitarian work, and not letting go of a tangible dream. My friends in Ghana have remained supportive, and it’s a great feeling knowing that I have helped them to gain more confidence through this.” Della’s current collection meshes classic and sophistication with a fun and flirty flare to create a unique, young style. Emphasizing and highlighting

“Th is

But now I am beyond excited about what’s in store!” Della prides itself upon her mission statement: “Della is committed to the long term success of our community, working to build a foundation for economic independence.” Through every sale, Della is one step closer to improving the lives in Ghana by contributing more thus diminishing the poverty and education issue. There are many ways to help and support the Della community.

We can expect to see them on her website June 1st. Also, be on the lookout for women’s clothing in the next month or two. “My style now with Della is more ‘African Prints’ that are beachy and hippie like,” revealed Tangalakis. “I plan to take a more beautiful, structured, classic approach with this (women’s) collection.” Tangalakis has taken a different approach with her women’s collection; the collection will reveal a

Each piece is made using vegan materials and fabrics, which mean that it contains no animal ‘by-products.’ Bringing the perfect mix of culture and individuality to Los Angeles- the embodiment of what our generation is today- it’s no wonder why many of Hollywood’s elite have become avid admirers of the Della Collection. The premiere design of Della is the classic ‘Hobo Bag.’ The Classic Hobo is basically your everyday bag that is multi-functional. The Classic Hobo is constructed with Ghana’s stunning textiles and gorgeous hues, which overall has made this bag desirable to consumers and drawn to Della as a brand. “This process has been very rewarding, a lot of personal risks, and facing challenges I never once

Individuals can buy a Della product (every purchase empowers a woman in Hohoe, Ghana), share the Della story (tell the story of Della to friends and family in hopes of encouraging discussion about our growing global community), host a Della Party (by hosting a Della party you are able to sell products and bring awareness to friends and family about the women in Hohoe, Ghana. Plus, Della community members are also available to speak at events), become a Della intern, or join the Della community to receive the newsletter for updates and information. The Della Collection includes beautiful handbags, head wraps, wallets, iPad, kindle fire, and MacBook cases, as well as jewelry such as earrings and necklaces. In addition to all of what Della has to offer, she is soon expanding the brand! In June, Della is launching with Apple, and

more personal ‘girl’ level, about which she is very excited. A-line dresses and much more, all designs will still have the bright vibrant hues, but we can expect to see a lot of new and exciting materials from this LA-based designer. A simple vision enabled Tina Tangalakis to reach milestones that were once intangible. Through collaboration and implementation without compromising values and morals, Della has quickly become a very reputable brand. Where sociallyresponsible-meets-fashion-and-commerce, Della is much more than an accessory. It’s the way to ‘carry change’ while providing opportunity. YOUR HEALTH

“Baywatch” actress Gena Lee Nolin

THYROID DISEASE “Baywatch” actress Gena Lee Nolan gives a voice to a silent and deadly disease.

T

he stunning Gena Lee Nolan- better known as “Baywatch’s” Neely Capshaw- was figuratively ‘drowning’ behind-the-scenes of the popular series.

No matter how little she ate and how much she exercised, she gained weight. Her once silky-blonde-hair became dry and brittle, and she was constantly tired. Finally it was discovered that she suffered from Hashimoto’s disease. This is a disease in which the immune system attacks and destroys the thyroid. The scary thing is that it took more than ten years (not to mention the development of increasingly frightening symptoms) for doctors to discover what was truly “eating” her. Ten years! Think of it: a decade of confusion and fear. Thyroid Disease affects a whopping 30-million Americans- more than half of which remain undiagnosed and untreated. In fact, it’s far more common than diabetes, heart disease, and breast cancer and affects more Americans than all types of cancers combined. Yet the vast majority of its victims suffer in silence. Leading Thyroid Expert and Integrative Health Owner Dr. Alan Christianson, NMD (as seen on CBS’s “The Doctors”), and co-author of “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Thyroid Disease” rescued this “Baywatch” beauty, but still too many suffer in silence without getting the help they so desperately need. A change must be made. We must learn the important signs of potential disease in order to help educate ourselves and those we love. Here Hollywood Weekly offers an important Q & A with Dr. Alan Christianson, NMD. Please read up on this; because you never know who this disease will target next. Remember, education is power.

Q & A with Dr. Alan Christianson, NMD.

Q. Dr. Christianson, please discuss the demographics most at risk for Thyroid Disease.

A. All ages and genders, 8/1 female to male ratio. More common with age. Conservative estimates say 7-10% of those 30 and over, 25% over 65.

Q. What are the Thyroid Disease warning signs you need to be on the lookout for?

A . Unexplained weight gain, hair loss, fatigue, depression or hoarseness. Q. Why does the thyroid makes some people eat too much and others too little?

A . It does not change appetite but changes metabolism. Those with under-

active thyroid glands burn 300-600 fewer calories per day than those without.

Q. How does one draw the line between binge snacking and a more serious issue?

A. Binge snacking itself is a serious issue. It is a sign that blood sugar is very unstable and risks are present for diabetes.

Q. What are some ways to combat the cravings and get your appetite back to where it should be?

A. (Try) eating more calories early in the day from high quality protein such as poultry, fish and meat and low glycemic carbohydrates such as beans, greens and yams.

Dr. Alan Christianson

RESTAURANT REVIEW

BItsarney ’ s Beanery, Very Own Legend. A Rock-N-Roll Star’s Favorite For Generations!

By Jenny Werth

Some may argue that Barney’s Beanery is almost as legendary as the Hollywood sign itself. It is Hollywood history that’s wrapped up with memories of rock stars such as Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and other infamous rockers’ who frequently dined, or rather, drank , at this well-known icon of a restaurant.

T

ruth be told, the walls inside Barney’s are still perfumed with conversations held between Marilyn Monroe and co-stars during the filming of “Some Like It Hot.” In fact, it’s well-known that Monroe loved Barney’s famous chili, while others such as Steve McQueen fancied drinking his beer over ice. Okay, that’s enough “name-dropping” for any star-struck fan. Or, is it? Indeed, the history of Barney’s, coupled with its menu featuring innumerous items, brings in a regular bandwagon of hungry and thirsty patrons.

But, what’s really fascinating is the fact that this restaurant is enjoying its ninth decade of service- practically unheard of in a city such as Los Angeles. A little history for you: it was established in 1920 by Barney Anthony as a little bungalow. A bungalow that evolved along with the evergrowing LA population into the spacious, rockn-roll style eatery it’s known for today. Music blares onto Santa Monica Boulevard from a jukebox in constant use and there’s literally a

“buzz” you feel when you walk in the place. It seems everyone in this restaurant is ready to either forget about the whole day during happy hour or start off the beginning of another crazy LA evening. It’s the kind of place where you can let loose and play pool or just zone out under one of the various neon beer signs. This was the first Barney’s opened (there are now four more locations in Southern California) but this original locale is the place best known for the stuff legends are made of.

I gave Barney’s my business on a Monday evening and from the moment I entered, I felt a wave of relief envelop me . I had entered a haven where “forgetwork” was the theme. It had been a long day and all I wanted was a good meal in a non-pretentious environment.

Wish granted! I started with a hearty order of Barney’s appetizers from the eight-page menu. Yes, I said an eight- page menu. Plus, it’s printed on newspaper with tons of delicious illustrations. The kind that make it very hard to decide what to order! I munched on the Philly Potato stuffed with mushrooms, onions, peppers, melted cheese and your choice of chicken or beef ($9.25). Then I had some of that oh-so-famous chili. I became spellbound. You must try it yourself to understand! Since I was feeling a bit guilty after devouring the stuffed potato and the chili, I decided to compensate by trying the fajitas for my main course. There’s an extensive south- of-the-border menu section tambien! The fajitas were as authentic as any Mexican restaurant in town. They came out sizzling with onions, peppers, cilantro and tomatoes along with rice, beans and either corn or flour tortillas. Try them with chicken or grilled shrimp (from $12.50). Ay… delicioso! Then, of course, there are all the amazing pizza-options. One must simply choose from the array of yummy-choices themselves. However, the fact that Barney’s can serve pizza as good as a stuffed potato or chili or even Mexican food is quite impressive. Also, keep in mind that whatever you are craving, Barney’s most certainly has it on the menu. But just so you know, the menu does say, “If we don’t have it… you don’t need it.” Nuf’ said amigo.

RISING STAR

JOSH VIETTI A Violinist That Leaves An Audience Spellbound.

BY JENNY WERTH

Josh Vietti’s is on a musical journey that’s going to inspire audiences world-wide from the very instant he takes out his violin. Josh possesses the incredible ability to push the limits of classical music by playing the violin while combining it with totally different styles of music such as hiphop and jazz. He makes this combination of music work perfectly. And the result is a musical melody that leaves an audience literally mesmerized. Josh himself sums it up perfectly, “I want people to be lost in my music.” Lost in an ethereal way; lost in an awakened dream-stance. Lost just enough so you can find yourself, right there inside this pulsating musical expression. Josh’s style of music reminds me of the flamenco/salsa-inspired music made famous by Otmart Liebert. Fans of every kind of music, whether it be country, classical, hard rock or pop can often relate and appreciate the melody of Ottmar Liebert’s soothing and vibrant melodies.

T

his is similar to what Josh is offering through his use of the violin combined brilliantly with hip-hop and jazz. The proof of its impact is already solid. He recently opened for the legendary band “Earth, Wind and Fire” in Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre. In fact, he played for 30-minutes in front of an audience of 10,000 people. Not surprising, members of the audience were entranced, and began contacting his manager to request Josh play in their countries. And so it begins: his journey toward international stardom. Already, Josh’s off to a jazz festival in Malaysia where he will perform jazz, hip-hop and violin. And then there’s his trip to China where he will also perform; there are simply too many venues to mention, and the list of performances grow everyday. Josh, a native of Southern California, began playing violin at four-years-old. He is a young man of energy, optimism, charisma and great talent. But all this fan-fare didn’t just happen overnight. Need I remind you that Los Angeles is, at best, a challenging town. And it’s even harder when you try to introduce a totally unique kind of music to an audience. After Josh graduated from college, he took the reins in his own hands and started doing street performances. Whether rain or shine, allowed or not allowed, Josh showed up, performed and kept the momentum going for over five years. Finally, someone in the crowd at one of his street performances led him toward the next step in catapulting his career. “I

Q. Which have been the most exciting performances you’ve done so far? And are there any you are especially excited for in the near future? A. Opening for FABOLOUS and Ne-Yo at ARIA Casino in Vegas for Michael Jordan’s Celebrity Invitational. I also got to meet MJ in person and take a picture with him! He mentioned he really liked my performances. That was pretty cool! Also, I recently opened for “Earth Wind & Fire” at Nokia Live in front of 10,000 people. After the show I shook hands and took pictures with over 1,000 people in the audience. It was a really warm reception. Q. Where do you see yourself in two years? Five years? A. My goal is to keep developing my sound and connecting with my fans. I think you have to constantly evolve as a musician and not lose sight of connecting with your audience. Hopefully I’ll be playing bigger shows and reaching more people throughout the world. Q. Any advice for aspiring musicians? A. Be yourself, practice, network, hustle, and don’t worry about what other people think. If you’re doing what you love, keep doing it and don’t give up. It will pay off!

“I want people to be lost in my music.” love it and I kind of feel very grateful, I started as a street performer in late 2006 right after I graduated college. I spent five to six years performing on the street, so I’m grateful and humble, but at the same time I feel I’ve earned it (my success).” For more information on Josh and his touring schedule please visit www.joshvietti.com

Q. Josh, after college, you decided to become a street performer. Can you tell me what made you decide to just go out there and “do it.” A. After college I was managing a coffee shop and during my free time I started making tracks using Garage Band. I created a ten song demo, printed a small batch and went out to the 3rd St. Promenade in Santa Monica one night. I played for twenty minutes before the promenade manager kicked me out, saying I needed a permit and that I was playing in a non-performance zone. During that time I created a good sized crowd and sold thirty demos at ten bucks a piece. That’s when I decided I should give street performing a shot. Q. You recently performed on the “Ellen Degeneres Show.” Tell me about that experience and what’s happened to you since the show. A. I’ve always been a big fan of Ellen. But actually walking out in front of a live studio audience, seeing Ellen in person – you can’t beat that! Did I mention that Katy Perry was in the dressing room next to me? Crazy! Since my performance on the Ellen show I’ve been touring non-stop and opening for some of the biggest acts in entertainment. I’m very grateful for the opportunity. Q. Can you tell me the inspiration behind the song “Lost Without You.” It is a simply mesmerizing melody. Wow. Are there any other songs that you find your audiences really relate too? A. Thank you! That song really means a lot to me. It was inspired by a truly special person in my life. I think that is why people really relate to it, because it comes from the heart. People also really like my original song “Street Violin”. I wrote that song while improvising on the street in front of a live crowd. It’s more hip-hop oriented, but it’s still raw and authentic – I think that’s the key.
