Cover Story

Melissa’s love affair with law started young. And not just any field, she had a favorite – complex, dangerous, gritty Criminal Law! Attorney Chester’s tales would have scared most kids. Melissa felt inspired and empowered. She imagined fighting for innocent clients – she loved the idea of it, the thrill of it… But, first she had to graduate from her high school… In 10th grade I thought about girls and movies – Melissa thought about “DNA Defenses.” Few teens are so clear about their career choice. Even as adults most of us are still unsure. “Why can’t I change my job title to Rock God?” So, Melissa was unique in her clarity – and her destiny walked right through her front door… Ira Chester grew up with Melissa’s mother. Meaning he’s known Melissa her entire life. And in her home, over dinner, his stories of criminal law came alive.

Ira’s legendary cases have graduated to near folklore. We fast-forward to Melissa’s graduations. High school, undergraduate degree, law school… She’s working at a top law firm in New York City. After that she worked in the Brooklyn DA’s office… Osmosis is happening, fashion takes root. Melissa’s originality develops: the tough New York Lawyer and Diva Stylist.

A mix of Carrie Bradshaw “…And Justice For All.” Criminal Defense in New York is boot camp. We’ve all seen “Big Apple” characters in movies: just imagine representing them in court. Melissa learned to interact with everyone. Brooklyn, Harlem, the Bronx, Melissa knew you – and yet, equally at home in Central Park West… A true cosmopolitan chameleon. Able to discuss Biggie Smalls, Santana, Miles – and can tell you Dvorák’s best string quartet… Melissa became a woman for all seasons…

Back in L.A. Ira continued his work. Building on his decades-long commitment to law… Most people in L.A. view Ira as a sort of tough, moral Harper Lee creation. A lawyer of substance. A throwback to a time when local lawyers knew everybody in town. And your reputation determined whether you stayed in business… But more than that, you cared about your neighbors. These were people you knew growing up. If the police arrested “James Hopper” for arson – to you, that was still “little Jimmy.” A kid you knew was innocent.

Without revealing the names, that was a real case; Ira and Melissa’s client was facing life for murder – they got him 36 months for manslaughter… Ira says there’s a story behind everything. Things are rarely as they appear on the surface. They see their job as getting to the truth. Regardless of how crazy it looks going in. It’s about seeing past sensation and looking for substance... But it all starts with honesty, and your trust… Those are the ground rules for this lawyer from the trenches of LA’s criminal justice system and his dynamic partner.

Los Angeles is too big for Ira to know everybody. So, he goes by his instincts. Are you a decent, respectable person who made a mistake? Or are your actions the tip of a criminal iceberg? Ira will know after his first meeting with you… You think you’re having a relaxed talk with a charming lawyer – what’s really going on is a litmus test of sorts. Ira is determining whether you’re lying to him. He can’t defend you if you’re not honest with him… But, if you come in his office showing all your cards – the good,

No surprise, Ira majored in philosophy. The Nicomachean Ethics his work of choice… In this setting his bond with Melissa makes sense. His older Aristotle to her young Plato… Ira was thinking about retiring when Melissa came back to Los Angeles. Ira and her talked about possibilities. He marveled at how far his protégé had come. Fierce articulation, confidence and style – she walked in court as if dressed by Patricia Field!

Melissa’s love affair with law started young. And not just any field, she had a favorite – complex, dangerous, gritty Criminal Law! the bad and the ugly, as Clint would say… Well, let’s just say “little Jimmy” will be alright… Ira’s legendary cases have graduated to near folklore. Almost unbelievable scenarios. Situations where “guilt” seems beyond logical. You stabbed your best friend in the neck. Your fingerprints are all over the murder weapon. In the victim’s dying breath, he blames you for stabbing him. You were found covered (dripping!) in the victim’s blood! With all that evidence how could you get a break? The prosecutor’s convinced it’s a slam dunk – they’re already planning their afterparty.

But it was her voracious research skills he loved… Endlessly, tirelessly sifting through case files. Looking for the best precedent to help their trial… And she was tech-savvy, a great yin for his yang. In other words, they were old school and new school. A formidable legal team by all standards… And they haven’t gone unnoticed by Hollywood… Jerry Shevick of Shevick*Zupon Entertainment is currently creating a Reality Show about the duo. Some of the focus on the show will be about their philanthropic work. Ira created a documentary about D.U.I.’s inspired by his desire to save lives through

Ira Chester education and information. Ira and Melissa are trying to get the DVD distributed to local schools. And both Ira and Melissa are working on a project for the homeless. The idea is that many people with legal problems can’t find work because they’re afraid of being arrested. So, they end up on the street… Melissa and Ira want to set up his RV at a downtown homeless shelter to work out of. Homeless men and women will be able to visit them

Melissa Lewkowicz and explain their situations. One by one, their issues will be reviewed. And, if possible, their cases rectified – because resolving their warrants and legal issues is the first step in getting them off the streets and productive… Noble actions by a couple of noble lawyers… Meeting Ira and Melissa proved many things… First, fictional

lawyers are sometimes real people. Ira Chester is Atticus Finch manifest… There are still heroes out here, walking among us… As for Melissa, she’s clearly changed the game… Lawyers can be smart, sexy and cool, but still tough… In court her dazzling smile hides a knockout punch. So, watch out all you prosecutors in waiting

– don’t be so quick to assume anyone’s guilt. You might want to work out a deal with these two… And for the falsely accused and first offenders – and good people who made really bad choices… I’d Google Melissa and Ira today! …And if that’s not fast enough, try their website.

The Ivanka Trump Shoe Collection will offer a wide range of options from flip-flops and stilettos, to ballet flats and sneakers specifically designed for the modern everyday women. I am always inspired when I see an opportunity in the marketplace to introduce something new. Industry extraordinaire, Ivanka Trump gives Hollywood Weekly a glimpse of what to expect from her designs, how she balances her passions and her vision for her future.

There is a great opportunity to position stylish, yet refined shoes. What you tend to see out there are unwearable, over- the-top styles, or looks that are comfortable to the point of forgoing any appealing aesthetic. On the personal front, I look forward to growing by family.

HW: What is your approach to work/life balance? As hard as I work, it is important to make the most of time I can spend with my husband and friends. When I am not working, I give the people I am with my full attention; I think that is very important. Because I travel so much for work, and often to very exciting places, I also try to take advantage of sightseeing opportunities when I can – it is another way to strike a balance between business and pleasure.

HW: What do you do to relax? Because our work lives are so busy, Jared and I really enjoy relaxing at our home. Sometimes we go to the park or go biking, I have also learned to cook, and one of our favorite things to do is gather friends for small dinner parties. One night a week, each Friday, I cook a huge dinner for just the two of us, we turn everything off and we catch up.

HW: What pearls of wisdom can you offer to entrepreneurs? I recently published a book called “The Trump Card: Playing to Win in Work and Life”. In the book, I encourage young entrepreneurs to get out there and try different things; knowing what you love is also in part eliminating the things you do not enjoy doing. Young people in the business world should not be afraid to be bold, work incredibly hard and ask smart questions. The level of drive that stems from passion is what will separate someone from being moderately successful to being very successful.

niki: What is your title anD your involvement With los angeles fashion night out? My name is Cynthia Ruiz. I serve in the capacity as Mayor Villaraigosa’s Fashion Ambassador. I worked as the lead for Fashion’s Night Out along with Nicole Williams who is the Project Manager. This was the first year that the City of Los Angeles was involved in Fashion Week and we are extremely happy with the results.

niki: What Was your favorite moment at la fashion night out? My favorite monument was walking on stage at the opening ceremony and feeling the excitement in the air and looking around seeing all the people that came out to support our efforts.

niki: What Designers are on the rise in la? There are so many designers who are on the rise in Los Angeles. Picking one is very hard. The unique thing about LA Fashion is the diversity. We are home to a variety of designers. We are very well known for denim but we also have some great designers like Kevan Hall and Lloyd Klein who are high style.

niki: Do you feel that la’s fashion community came together for this event? I know the Fashion Community in Los Angeles came together for that one night. There were events happening all over the City from Venice, to the Valley and from Loz Feliz to Melrose. There is no down side to Fashion’s Night Out. In LA we have celebrities, fashion and fun.

asPiring WritErS

niki: What events DiD you Personally attenD at la’s fashion night out? The Mayor and I attend the Opening Ceremony at the Beverly Center with Will.i.am (Black Eyed Peas). We then made a few stops including Hilary Rush & House of Petro Zililla on 3rd street. From there we traveled over to Melrose to visit Fred Segal where we ran into Lisa Love. On Robertson we visited Intermix and Rock & Republic. The Mayor also traveled to Venice where Anjelicia Huston hosted a party.

niki: What Designers are you a fan of? I am a big fan of many the designers that have been in LA for a while including Louis Verdad and his line Louver. I was actually wearing one of his dresses that night. I also love Kevan Hall, Sue Wong, Lloyd Klien, Skingraft, Stop Staring and rising stars like Yotam Solomon.

niki: Who is your fashion icon? I think Anjelicia Huston is a great fashion icon. She is so classy yet sexy. I was glad she was a part of FNO!

niki: What is your favorite retail shoPPing sPot in la? I shop all over the city and do not have one favorite place. I am always looking for new places.

niki: are you PleaseD With the results of the first la fashion night out? We are very please with the results. We are still calculating the results but know that at our hub, the Beverly Center, there were 20,000 people in there that night with many retailers doubling their sales. On the official city web site which was up only three weeks we had over 22,000 visitors. Our social media was also very successful.

niki: Will there Be another los angeles fashion night out? Will you ParticiPate? Yes. The Mayor made a promise while we were visiting Intermix that the City will do it again next year. We need to mention that the tee shirts proceeds go to scholarships fashion students California fashion foundation!

thee unknoWn goD We are one with the Earth, the animals and those in the spirit worlds, one with all there is. When the darkness grows too strong Nature’s spirit begins to rise and a mystical force begins to gather those who listen to a voice, to an unknown god from within, for the darkness, must be made weak again. This is such a time. The dark souls of the Roman Empire want to maintain a rule by the elite few and a dominance over the people but the Emperor’s popularity is falling so in secrecy they devise a plan of deception. One where army units disguised as Amazons and foreigners will attack the people of the Empire and burn their buildings... so they can create fear, gain more control and go to war. As the Gathering of Divine watch they are left with no choice; freewill the Romans will no longer have. Ascended Masters begin to gather warriors of the light. They seek Lanay, a Druid priestess born with great powers of the earth to protect Britannia but who was captured by the Romans with the help of the Greek gods. She lost her way as she sought revenge but gave her life so many could move on to the worlds of the souls. Journeying from the far East is the medium, Eve, who enters the oasis city of Tudmur, Syria, now under Roman rule and called Palmyra. She performs a miracle but a male priest says she is a demon and with Mars, the Roman God of War, they turn the crowd against her. They begin to stone her but a stranger intervenes. As the attacks unfold the people are deceived and good people are helping the darkness to grow as they live in fear, their anger, wanting revenge, wanting the armies to go to war and kill their attackers. They choose to follow the leaders with dark souls and no longer listen to their unknown god from within, but there are those who do not. Lanay chooses to reincarnate. She journeys with a dragon and an animal spirit guide to an ancient sea temple where a war between the Roman army and the Amazons has begun. As Queen Lakota leads the Amazons they reunite with their ally Lanay. After the battle, White Eagle, a descendent of Atlantis appears and asks the survivors to come. The Amazons and Lanay journey to meet the Aegeans, spiritual opposites of Rome, a mystical people who posses great knowledge. They discover the origin of the Amazons, see amazing things and learn that the Universe speaks to us in many ways. As Lanay has a deathly dream, far away Eve is visited by her spirit guide who asks her to journey to an alter created by Socrates and spoken of by the Apostle Paul, the one of Thee Unknown God. Lanay speaks with an Aegean diviner about the dream and when a sign manifests from the spirit world she and Lakota are taken to Thessaloniki. They are about to cross paths with Eve but Mars’ thugs intervene and wound Lakota. Mars may slow them down but he no longer has the freewill to stop them. Through tragedy, wonder..., and a great distance the Druid priestess, Amazon queen, medium and stranger enter the altar. But then death comes calling as Emperor Nero and his army enter and converge upon them. Nero who burned and sacrificed the lives of his own people in order to create chaos and war now stands before them. Greatly outnumbered they know they were brought here for a purpose by a force and a voice from within. As the arrow in Lanay’s dream comes for her heart...

Cultural synthesis in Los Angeles, CA Written by Dr. Laura Wilhelm

LauraWil Intercultural

“We are each of us angels with only one wing, and we can only fly by embracing each other.” Luciano de Crescenzo

(from a mural in LA’s Byzantine Latino Quarter) 24 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

It is said that Los Angeles manages diversity like nowhere else on earth. As a proud Angeleno for the past fifteen years, I find that statement to be utterly suspect. Here in LA we do not contain diversity so much as celebrate it. The divine madness of cultural synthesis is generally our method. In LA Guatemalan immigrants cook my very favorite pizza and pasta while Middle Easterners obsessed by the Italian avant-garde design some of the area’s finest pumps and party frocks. Elsewhere I have sung “Guantanamera” and snacked on Greek food, but not simultaneously. Thank the annual Greek Fest in LA’s Byzantine Latino Quarter for that. This highly successful experiment in community building has contained severe inter-ethnic tensions for the past twelve years mainly by showing everybody a good time.

I live blocks from the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and City Hall near the geographic center of a community renowned for the LGBT and Russian populations

Cultural synthesis can and does penetrate to the fundamental level of language. My company recently started to help promote a hundred-page book titled RUNGLISH. Author Nina Naydenova amusingly documents how the linguistic strategies developed by Russian- and English-speaking cosmonauts in outer space have spread to life on earth. The RUNGLISH promotion is becoming an international phenomenon involving both American and Russian media and celebrities. Muscovite sponsors include Oksana Fedorova, Russia’s only Miss Universe to date; and tenor Nikolay Baskov, the Golden Voice of Russia.

Photo Credit: Raphael Maglonzo (RunWAY ICOn) for eva skaya to the west and east. One cannot imagine a more fascinating crucible for both business and community development. Presently my Iranian American intern from the Beverly Hills High School and I are negotiating a contract to perform Farsi community outreach on behalf of a Russian-owned taxicab company. I acquired an additional two Spanishspeaking interns who want to work with the local transgender community at the recent West Hollywood Job Fair.

Fashion and the arts are international endeavors that thrive upon the broadest possible range of experience and inspiration. The entertainment industry has a real role in the serious mission of mass communications now that new global markets may number in the billions. Diversity unites us through the active pursuit of our differences. At its best, American culture lovingly embraces this apparent paradox.

My company profile is attracting other talents from all over the world. Educators, media professionals, and publishers immediately recognize the need to reach a wide global audience. New intercultural schools strive to teach the broad spectrum of skills necessary for a bright future in the twenty-first century and beyond. Politicians and public agencies are reaching out to ethnic residents in LA like never before. Like their manpower and money, the votes and voices of bicultural citizens count equally. The US Census Bureau always has great need for bilingual field workers. The Los Angeles Fire and Police Departments offer citizenship and diversity training to its multinational workforce.

POLITICS

A letter from Lucy Deutsch a Holocaust survivor to Islamic Republic of Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad: Dear President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad: I heard your speech that you gave at Columbia University. My name is Lucy Deutsch and I am a holocaust survivor, living in America. Here is what I have to say. The way I see it, my God is your God, yet they are so differently distinctive. My God created humans to have the capacity to reason, and to make the right choices, but God didn’t make us into fanatical creatures which are only limited to one thought; a thought with no compromise, or reasoning. A thought which claims only the rule of self. To have this kind of purity of thought can exist only in heaven. God gave us a mental image of himself and this fundamental capacity of thought should be used as a measuring stick, and a guideline for humans to live by. I say, if you think, Mr. Ahmadinejad, that you can exist with only one thought and there is no room for any thing else, you should climb up that ladder and stay where you can sit next to God and tell him; “you see God, I am so loyal to you, I don’t compromise, and I don’t reason. Every word spoken in your name is holy to me.” I am sure God would have an answer for you. He would probably say; “Mahmoud, I am so glad that you love me so much but whatever you do don’t use my name so often.

And why are you so bothered with this small silver of land I gave to my children? It belonged to them for many thousands of years. They had to fight many, including some from your own tribe. You are harboring over events which occurred 60 years ago when most of my children finally came home. Its just a drop in the bucket, where time is concerned with their beloved Jedea. Wherever my children were, in every prayer they praised me and in the same breath they called Jerusalem their homeland. It gave them inspiration, pride of being a Jew, regardless of where they lived. And now you wanna take this land away from them? You wanna start a fight with me Mahmoud? I don’t think so.

About the Holocaust Don’t even go there. Your careless declaration about the Holocaust disturbs me. The pain my children suffered lays heavy on my heart. It was out of my hands. Sometimes I can’t control what humans do to each other. This child is called Lucy Deutsch. She became an orphan at the age of 14. Her mother and father and her two sisters and her little brother were all killed in the Holocaust. They are here with me. If you don’t believe me, while you are here, I’ll introduce you to them.”

I feel the burden is all mine. You need to take some on yourself. I gave you a brain, why don’t you use it for yourself.

And this is what I, Lucy Deutsch, have to say to you. Leave us Jews be. Remember your last words, you gave at Columbia University.

You don’t have to involve me in everything that you do. They way you cling to me is recommendable but don’t abuse my good will for your own purposes.

Live up to what you preach. Make peace with yourself and all of us.

Up here, one thought maybe alright but down there, you have to compromise. There you live in a time that is constantly changing and, you must adapt. Up here you don’t have to. Here time stands still.”

Lucy Deutsch Lucy Deutsch is a Holocaust survivor who is devoted to inspire others. Its something she still practices daily. For the past 20 years she has evolved to become an accomplished novelist, poet, lyricist, as well as a writer for screen and stage. She is a writer with compassion and insight using an innocent stile that reflects her thought of purity. SHATTERED CHILDHOOD is what Lucy calls her most important work. Its a non fiction book and screen play about her life. Its heart wrenching, but at the same time inspiring. Values of courage and compassion go hand in hand in all of her creative works, as she never lets mistrust or

alienation abandon her higher principles. Her outlook on life is always to always positive. She continues counting her blessings. Her ordeal in Auschwitz as a child didn’t stop her spirit to soar above it all. Its in that place that she learned the usefulness of being alive and it made her stronger. Loosing her family, finding herself an orphan at the age of 14, she knew what she had to do. She had to find inspiration within herself to be able to find her mission in life.

An Act of Peace or the Victory in War? Written By: Parandis Khalili

through out history extreme Muslims moralize that every one should be a Muslim or, they are not forgiven by Allah. therefore they are in agony and the entrance of paradise will be closed and the gates of hell will await for their arrival. The word Muslim is rooted from Islam, meaning you surrender to Allah. The extreme Muslims divide people by two, Moemen (surrender to Mohammad and his believes) or the Kafar (non-Muslims). Every battle the extreme Muslims went through was to gain power over the non-Muslims, persuade and force the people to become Muslim or it said that their lives was taken. Mohammad the great prophet of Islam indicated that there are two parts in this world,

36 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

DAR-OLISLAM (a place that Muslims rule) and DAR-OLHORB (a place that Muslims should act of war) and he segregated Islamics nation apart from any other culture or nation. After the death of the prophet, at khalifah-Omar-khatab, By his declaration invasion of the Persian empire was tried many times. After many attempts, they succeed because Omar convinced and manipulated his army that there is no loss there,

either way they are winners. If they are killed, they would go to heaven and a virgin woman will be awaiting for them and if they win the war, they will reside in Persia, The GOLD, THE WOMEN and much more in that country, Omar told his troops. They won the war and the day they won, extreme Muslims started building the first mosque in Persia so they called that day FATHOL FOTTOH, which means the biggest won war.

Thereafter, anytime Muslims went to a war and won the battle they would start building a mosque as a resemblance of their leaders existence. Why do we have to preach a religion and discriminate against every one else and exclude non Muslims who go to a community center?

Why? Didn’t we as Americans fight discrimination through out our history and preached that every one has an equal right? But we don’t follow that concept. Non Muslims can’t use the Islamic Center, not because they don’t want to but because they wouldn’t be allowed by the Islamic law.

Shema YeeSrael adonai elaheuno, adonai ehad. allah o la elaha ela haYol GhaYoom our God iS the one and onlY God According to Bible, Tora, and Quran we all have the Same God, Hashem and Allah. We call upon it differently. We use different names but the God remains the same, so why can’t we just love each other and celebrate the only one God we all call upon. Why can’t we love the diversity of every religion and culture has to offer? Why can’t we make peace with all humans and compromise for a better future? God loves us all and we should love all his creations, because that’s what he would wants us

to do; not to fight over the fast on Ramadan or Yumkipor. Knowing the history of Islamic battles and what building a mosque actually means, what does building an Islamic center close to ground zero mean?

Could it be that we lost the war to the terrorist? Or better to ask, if you were a non American perhaps and was residing in Iraq or Afghanistan as a Muslim would you be just proud of your people and say see we won America too? So what ever political choice we may plead, don’t we have to be aware of the negative consequences that choice might have internationally considering we still have troops in those countries?

Well, the Middle East is a different part of the world with different perspectives, an action that could mean peace in the United States could mean Victory in War in their culture. So let’s just not make it so exclusively for the Muslims, let’s just build a community center where each of us can actually celebrate life, love without considering and discriminating against each others religion.
