n Greek Mythology, Prometheus gave the gift of fire to the human race, transforming us instantly. As a married man I’ve got to be careful going around comparing other women to Greek Gods and Goddesses, but Clinical Psychologist Carole Disenhof’s book “Talk The Weight Off” is so revolutionary in nature, that as I sat talking with her in her Beverly Hills office I kept thinking about how important her message is to all of us, and I couldn’t shake this Prometheus metaphor of “giving something to people that would completely change their lives.” Now don’t expect too much back-story on Dr. Disenhof because she practices a concept called “Transference,” where her role with her clients is becoming a “blank screen” so her clients can transfer any feelings they have onto her. This means that any issues you may have with your mom, father, brother, sister, cousin, grandparents, friends, spouses, girlfriends, boyfriends or whoever, to you, Dr. Disenhof can be all of these people. For this to be effective, you can’t know anything about her: whether she’s married, divorced, if she likes dogs or cats, her political views – nothing. She has to be a clean slate so you can make her into whoever you need her to be.

my clients because the transference is the cure. When my clients resolve their transference with me or a group member, the problem automatically gets resolved with the person with whom they had the issue. They don’t even have to go back to that person because they’re resolving it with one person to whom they transfered their feelings.”

Transference. It’s something we all do, everyday, for better or for worse. Anybody we meet we immediately categorize them into our mental rolodex of people we’ve met DR. CAROLE S. DISENHOF: “Trans- and relationships we’ve had before. We ference is an unconscious process where judge books by remembering the covers of you transfer feelings that you have toward “other books.” someone in your life, past or present, onto a neutral person, such as myself, or if it’s Monty Python has a great sketch where a a group a neutral group member, and treat man walks into an office and says, “Hi, that person as if they are the person in your I’d like to buy an argument.” The man is life who you really have good feelings for directed to a room where he says to the or bad feelings for, and there’s something man in the room, “Hi, I’m here to buy an about it you need to resolve. Now, because argument.” The man in the room says, “No that feeling is unresolved, that’s why most you’re not.” The first man says, “Yes, I am.” people are overweight, because they “eat” This goes on for about five minutes until the man in the room says, “Okay, that’ll be down those unresolved feelings.” $50.” Unbeknownst to him, the first man HW: “So, you’re truly a woman for all had begun his “argument” without even seasons.” realizing it. In this same way, many people in Dr. Disenhof’s office begin their “treatDR. DISENHOF: “I’m a chameleon for

ment” without realizing it. A potential client will walk into her office and tell her they want to lose weight. As they start talking Dr. Disenhof will ask if they would like to start the process, to which they may respond, “No, I don’t think so.” They’ve now changed their mind. When Dr. Disenhof asks why they’ve had a change of heart, they may say something like: “I just came to see what this is about, and I don’t want to do it.” When Dr. Disenhof inquires further, their true feelings will start to show – “You know, I just don’t like you. I think you’re a bitch. I don’t like the way you talk. I don’t think you’re a nice person.” At this point Dr. Disenhof will ask, “Well, who in your life is not a nice person?” Essentially, she’s searching for the “person” she is reminding this potential client of, once realized, she can bring this “transference” to their attention, letting them know the Part One of their treatment has already begun. DR. DISENHOF: “Finding out who the basis of any transference is like solving a mystery in the beginning. But then they’ll tell me that their mother was a b---h, and their boss is a b---h, and they think all HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY11

women are b-----s, and now I can point out their transference, so they can give me a chance to help them resolve this with me. Then it will automatically be resolved with their mother, boss or whoever was the source of their transference. Dr. Disenhof is able to discover the root of these painful memories, and lend herself out as a sounding board for her clients to find closure. These are the real issues that lie beneath overeating, what floats to the top are the excuses most of us create and live with to avoid confronting our emotional wounds...and Dr. Disenhof has heard them all. Most of these ridiculous examples of self-denial make up the subchapters of “Talk The Weight Off.” I don’t have room here for my Top Ten self-rationalizations for being overweight, so here’s my Top 3 because I’ve actually used these myself: (1) “I just have a habit of overeating.” (2) “I like food more than you do.” And (3) “Being big just runs in my genes.” Of course, Dr. Disenhof has an answer for anything you can conjure up, but she did highlight some points about the reality of being an overweight child: DR. DISENHOF: “There are legitimate concerns with hereditary predispositions to body shape, and your inherent metabolism, but there’s a point where overeating begins to dictate your weight. What’s more common are children who overeat to calm themselves down because they’re constantly hearing their parents fighting. Then you have bad eating habits that are passed down from parents to their children, so these kids grow up thinking that being overweight is normal, until their peers gradually become more important to them and now their weight has turned into a problem. They develop insecurities and feel hurt and their own emotional issues take on a life of their own, and they start overeating for their own reasons, independent of their parent’s initial poor eating examples.” 12 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

Overeating is also a buffer against the outside world – being overweight literally acts as a way of not letting anyone get close to you – but for some of Dr. Disenhof’s clients the objective of keeping people at a distance is not relegated to just their physical appearance: DR. DISENHOF: “I call it the ‘Intimacy Dance.’ My clients will complain that they can’t find anyone to get in a meaningful relationship with, but when they go on dates they say and do everything they can to turn the person away. They’ll criticize them and complain – you name it – because deep down inside they don’t feel they’re worthy of anyone’s love. This is a very serious, psychological problem. People need to find their pain, and discover what they’re trying to push down with their eating.” HW: “So, dieting doesn’t address the real issue at all.” DR. DISENHOF: “Absolutely not, because now, before you’ve even recognized whatever trauma it is you had that started you on this path, you’re taking away the one thing that’s bringing you comfort. So, now you’re depriving yourself of food and your problem still exists. You’re going to end up breaking your diet and eating twice as much as you did before to compensate for the pain you put yourself through. That’s why I tell people if you want to gain weight, go on a diet.” Near the end of my interview with Dr. Disenhof she told me the best way for people to choose a Psychologist, which is to look for someone with whom they have a transference. What kind of reaction are you having with your Psychologist? Are you able to tap into emotions that need to be explored? It’s really up to the Psychologist to be clever enough to identify what your transference is, but we should also be aware of what is going on and play a part in

our own recovery. Transference has been the elephant in the room for most of us. The reason why we find ourselves attaching to people we really shouldn’t be with, or rebuffing people for reasons we don’t understand. They say a Lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client. Doctors also prefer not to diagnose themselves – even Barbers rarely cut their own hair. So, how can we expect to solve our own psychological problems on our own? If you think you may have some hidden emotional issues I would think it’s worth it to at least go for a free consultation… If you have to transfer your anger onto someone, better do it on a Professional and give your family and friends a well needed break...

“Experience the Difference” HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY17

Get to Know “I've received hundreds of demos and CD's from bands starting out, and I'm just not impressed with most of them. There were two that I've received that I was actually blown away by. The first was Puddle of Mud, which I recommended to be signed but nobody listened in time. The second is a band that I'm proud to introduce to you tonight, Analog Smith. My man Frank (Barbano) gave me their CD a few weeks ago and I gave it a listen and – WOW! Powerful stuff both lyrically and musically. If you represent a label and you’re out there... listen up. These guys are truly amazing”. Mark McGrath on rock band Analog Smith at the House of Blues Sunset. Analog Smith is a no frills, in-your-face mix of guts and good songwriting, ready to enter the next stage. On Analog Smith, their solid debut selftitled album, the blues roots turn into a power ballad and the voice of Coby Ryan McLaughlin explodes into an electrifying guitar riff. While unpredictably eclectic, the common link in Analog Smith’s music is the band’s ability to understand the importance of silences and of the fact that power for the sake of power is useless. But you’re only as good as your drummer. “Being a drummer, the most fun thing that I do is rocking out on stage and getting people to move to what I am laying down,” says Andrew “Drew” Walter. “However, if we are just rocking for rocking's sake and there is no substance there, you’re faking WEEKLY it instead of really feeling the HOLLYWOOD 18 music.”

“For me, I try to not only play what works best for the song, but many times I try and write drum parts that one wouldn't expect or that is not just a ‘cookie cutter’ or ‘insert here’ type of a part,” says Drew, who also digs quite a bit of 311, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublime, and Bob Marley. “They are where I get my groove from.” While influences vary, the band has a high standard when choosing a role model. “Led Zeppelin is our primary template as a band,” says Phil, the riff man. “They could do it all, from acoustic to heavy metal, but maintaining a consistent vibe throughout.”

That steadiness of purpose was needed to enter the studio, and the guys pulled it off. “We were able to really function efficiently as a band, with democracy and creative integrity under pressure and a tight deadline,” says Phil about the fourday recording session at the Sonora Studios in Los Feliz. “It was a great test of our trust on each other, but we realized what we are capable of pulling off musically,” says Drew. The self-produced crash course in recording paid off: Analog Smith faithfully showcases the band’s writing capabilities and musical intuitiveness. But if Drew is the pumping heart, Coby is the band’s soul. He has the raspiness and mood of Chris Cornell, the range of Robert Plant, and a unique ability to think in terms of the songs themselves, instead of just craving power for power alone Short in funds but rich in ideas, AS was forced to be efficient in the studio. Expanding on its strong demos, the band eventually found a new voice that they didn’t even know they had. “At that point, we were comfortable enough in our environment and with ourselves to have enough faith in what we were doing,” Coby says. “The studio wasn't some scary two-headed monster anymore, but a tool for infinite creativity. I could have stayed there forever.” Once it clicked, it never let go. The album was mostly recorded live, with no more than three takes. “We all said ‘screw it’ at one point, and just did what we know how to do,” says Coby. Despite being together for a little over a year, by the time they got to the studio AS was a well-oiled machine known in the underground for their stirring live performances. “I think collectively we’re all old enough to let our ego's go and just serve the music and each other,” says Coby. “Understanding your role and being part of the greater good makes it all a lot easier to do our jobs. Ultimately, we’re just there to serve the bitch goddess that is the music.” Analog Smith is: Coby Ryan McLaughlin (vocals), Phil Mannle (guitar), Shaun Benson (bass) Andrew Walter - drums www.myspace.com/analogsmith

eauty with brass knuckles describes the hottest talent poised to rock the Hollywood rap scene, as AZA (Asha) brings the cold war stateside with her own brand of hip hop. For AZA, music was a childhood friend she kept throughout adulthood, and as she emerges as rap music’s newest female super star, she is a force to be reckoned with. Ukraine maintains the second largest military force in Europe, so it’s no surprise why the illustrious AZA continues to challenge the rap game with guns blazing. As the self-proclaimed “Ukrainian Queen of Rap”, AZA has stepped into the game to put her home country on the map and take the crown.

The multi-disciplined writer and lyricist, originally worked in the Ukraine as a broadcast journalist, produced her own shows and was a recognizable public figure, including a former Miss Ukraine. Since coming to Los Angeles, AZA has become a member of SAG, appearing in several television shows and movies such as “That 70’s Show”, “That’s So Raven”, “Must Love Dogs”, among many others. Recently, AZA wrote, produced in the feature film titled “Ms. Nobody” which screened at the Cannes International film Festival. With a thirst for destroying the weak and annihilating fake rappers, AZA takes on all comers but no prison-

Contestants will have the chance to win 100 dollars weekly and the chance to dethrone the self proclaimed “Ukrainian Queen of Rap.” “I’m taking on the entire rap community, because that’s what the music was originally about. I have a lot of old school influence, so I’m no stranger to rap battles in the park where’d you see Doug E Fresh beat boxing, Slick Rick freestyling and someone from the neighborhood trying to step up to the challenge. immy Lloyds self-titled debut cd is far from flawless and equally distant from tragic. This album proves why Jimmy Lloyd has become a staple in the underground and Independent Rock music scene.

“... his ability to tap into the angry, heartbroken, loving, jealous and maniacal extremes of society help to position Jimmy Lloyd as an authority on American Rock culture.

Featuring the single Cop-Bar, the catchy track proves reminiscent of his self-proclaimed “Pure American Hell Raising” music. With a completely different and contemporary sound, his ability to tap into the angry, heartbroken, loving, jealous and maniacal extremes of society help to position Jimmy Lloyd as an authority on American Rock culture. His songs differentiate themselves from most independent rock albums with unpretentious and creative styles. Although incomparable to any album in this genre, his lyrics about emotionally charged relationships are mainstream enough to appeal to a wide range of listeners. The well placed lyrics in “Half Human”, “Our Love Is Like”, and “Siddhartha In a Chevy” successfully analyze our society and all of its complications and confusion. Doing much of his writing on the road, singer-songwriter Jimmy Lloyd creates acoustic based rock music with an audacious attitude and a rebellious sound. Jimmy has a talent for singing about people everywhere and an American life that is all too familiar to all of us. Jimmy Lloyd’s vocals evoke some rough edges and a lot of down- home charisma. His extremely passionate lyrics and subtle melodies reveal a love of mainstream rock and roll with a soft spot for indie culHOLLYWOOD WEEKLY 20ture.

It’s Time To Shop! By: Jenny Werth

It’s time to shop, Robertson Boulevard-style baby! Now, I know, I know, I can hear your objections already- but it’s too expensive!; too pretentious; way over my budget! And yes, that may normally be true. But, my fashion forward readers, there IS an up-side to this economy mess and that’s in one very important word: SALE! See, the $300 billion retail industry is trying to starve off their record bad 2008 by offering sale prices that make shoppers smile. And although the second ‘Black Friday’ has long passed, enticing ‘sale’ signs, block figures and crafty window stickers still line most of the trendy stores up and down one of West Hollywood’s most popular shopping sites. Do you need another reason to support the sales? How about making it your “good cause” of the day? Seriously! It’s the small retailers who struggle the most in a recession. They are the ones who are at the most risk of going out of business first. So, why don’t we join together and go show our love for our fellow business owners? I can already hear you putting those credit cards back in your wallet…. You good shopper, you. Just think of it, an excuse to cruise over to super-hip lisa kline and actually be able to leaf through their fabulous items of what usually bring an “ahhh, if only I’d married rich.” Well, it no longer matters! Who needs rich when there are wonderful sales? Hurry ladies! This just may be your chance to purchase that gorgeous fur collared vest, or how about that fantastic black number with the ‘just right’ amount of beaded pieces calling attention to the sexy low back? It’s true, right now, lisa kline is offering a tempting sale on regular priced items from $100 to $400 reduced by 30%. Lisa kline is sitting pretty at 136 South Robertson Blvd. If you are looking for something unique but a bit more understated, there is the sale going on just a few doors down at Vince. In

fact, there are still two racks of clothing just waiting for you to consider. Remember, even winif some of the sale items are from the win ter line, it really doesn’t matter, because, we do live in LA and really, how often does it reach freezing here? The point is, none of your friends are going to remember what Vince had in their 08’ Fall line, right? So, buy it now and wear it when it gets cold again. Most of the sale items at Vince are about $125 from $295. Now that’s what I call a slash in prices! Vince is located at 112 S. Robertson Blvd. For those of you who are absolutely done with clothes, I have good news. There are even sales on items such as designer pillows! And linens! And soaps! And decorative home items! Simply stroll into Between the Sheets. Indeed the world’s finest linens store has a reason for you to buy, shall we say, more presents for the in-laws? If there’s ever been a way to turn that blah, sleepless bedroom into a captivating world of dreams, then it’s with fine pillows! Toss a bunch all over the bed or a few for comfort. Either way, it’s a tried and true way to spruce up the bedroomor even the living room couch. Check it out! The sale will be on until the end of the month. Between the Sheets is waiting to make your life comfortable at 370 N. Robertson Blvd. I left the best for last. Now, I can’t say if this lingerie store will rival the prices of that huge store with all its “secrets,” but its couture merchandise will. I’ve got it covered, well, un-covered for you ladies! Le Bra is perhaps the finest in European women’s lingerie. Think of it- an amazing sale on those silky, sexy, irresistible lingerie pieces we all covet.
