A LETTER FROM

THE EDITOR

Happy Holidays! As we wrap the end of 2015, we cast an eye upon the accomplishments of a successful year. We are reminded to be thankful for having each of our advertisers and subscribers who joined the collective members of Hollywood Weekly’s family. This year marked fourteen years since our inaugural launch, back in 2001. PRATHER JACKSON Ironically this year, we experienced major progress with the addition of live events. Our 2nd Annual Hollywood Weekly Pre-Grammy party was held during February at the historic Charles Aidikoff Screening Room on renowned Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. The private event featured live music with Grammy nominated artist along with other noted celebrities who gathered to be interviewed on Hollywood Weekly’s red carpet. The event also marked the closure of the Charles Aidikoff Screening Room, which had become a fixture in the industry. The facility will be missed, much like the who’s-who collection of celebrity photos, which adored their walls, standing next to Mr. Charles Aidikoff. But the live performers were the highlight of our party. Opening with smooth Jazz by acoustic guitar extraordinaire Paulo, his music blended Jazz, Bassa, Flamenco and Calypso. Not to be outdone, a slew of Country Soul artist also performed and wowed the over pack crowd. While the Pre Grammy Party was nice, we also managed to continue publishing monthly editions of Hollywood Weekly Magazine. Our exclusive cover stories featured Russian pianist Oksana, Franco Masada, Martino Cartier, Jimmy D. Robinson, Chef Jack Lee, Henning Morales and Liza Fox, just to mention a few. In November 2015, we also celebrated our 2nd Annual Hollywood Weekly Magazine Film Festival, held at the Dick Clark Screening Room in Santa Monica, California. Hollywood Weekly’s events attract an international following with guest from China, Russia, Nigeria and Sweden along with foreign dignitaries mingling with Hollywood stars. We hope you enjoyed our nostalgic reflection on this year’s past highlights. Please take an additional moment and read our cover story featured in this New Year’s holiday edition. Pietro’s Italy provides leisure traveling and tourism in Italy. Mr. Navarra’s story is inspirational and teaches you to pursue your personal dreams with steadfast determination. Enjoy,

Later in life, Mr. Navarra studied Hospitality and Tourism after receiving his degree as a Tour Operator. He also travelled Italy from top to bottom and found all the cool nooks that most tourist do not see when touring Italy. His love for his country grew even more as he saw the vast and beautiful history of Italy. He then started working at hotels to learn the trade. He also used the movie “For Love or Money to see what American people liked. He was basically taking mental notes on what would become his concierge services to offer in Italy. During his travels, he also took notes learning about hospitality and how to deliver it. Mr. Navarra was on a mission, and his travels throughout Italy also served as the beginning of his vision that he would end up carrying out in America.

HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY 13

He shared his ideas but realized that he needed connections because he was constantly being turned down. Mr. Navarra states that he was turned down more than 43 times before getting one connection. He decided to move to America and pursue the American dream by providing his concierge services to top business executives in the U.S. In 2008, Mr. Navarra moved to New York City and started on his quest to become the best concierge business in America. He went knocking on doors and starting talking to people, although rejection amounted one after the other. By his estimates the amount of rejections he received were around 2,455, although some of those rejectees became some of his most loyal clients later on. Mr. Navarra eventually made his way to Beverly Hills, California. He made some contacts on the way to his dream city. Back in the 1990s, Mr. Navarra visited Beverly Hills, and said that he would live there one day and start his dream. This idea of Mr. Navarra chasing his dream in Beverly Hills was somewhat ignited when he saw Al Pacino at a coffee shop one day when he came as a tourist in the 90s. He did not mingle or speak with the actor but that was a sign and, proof that Mr. Navarro knew he had a great idea. Since Al Pacino was with Robert De Niro, his favorite actor, it was a sign that at that precise moment he would see him. He was starstruck. He pursued the idea but not without going through misery first. His dream was hard earned, but he manage to get by with inspirational books. Og Mandino’s and Napoleon Hill books were very inspiration to him. Many of his other favorites were written by Donald Trump. Mr. Navarra is inspired by Trump’s success, and Trump’s philosophy not to give up and keep working hard. Hard work and patience will come with success. With that in mind, Mr. Italy kept going. At times, he went through the hardest moments which included, by not having enough food or just making ends meet, but he pushed on. Mr. Navarra believes that everyone has a movie that represents their lives. For him, it is the “Pursuit of Happyness” starring Will Smith. Mr. Navarra can relate to the movie because he went through all the trials and tribulation before making a name for himself. Just like in the movie, Will Smith’s character endures some unpleasant

Similarly, Mr. Navarra pursued a dream that involved selling what he loves best, Italy. He kept at it and finally made his way to success. Pietro’s Italy is the top concierge company that can service anyone who is going on a trip to Italy. He also organize memorable weddings and private events in Italy. Some clients start by booking limited services and then later an entire vacation. All client needs are unique. The motto for

of success is one that could be told and used for inspiration. Mr. Navarra was inspired by actors who made it big in Hollywood like Al Pacino, De Niro, Sir Anthony Hopkins and successful entrepreneurs like Donald Trump. He also credits books and movies for his inspirations to chase the dream. Now that he is where he dreamed to be, his advice is to never give up on what you love to do. The ceremony included a star-studded red carpet at the pre event cocktail reception, a lively awards show featuring a who’s who cast of participants from the voiceover industry, media and professional circles, and a humorous and well-deserved tribute to William Shatner, by acclaimed comedy writer Bruce Vilanch. The Voice Arts® Awards is an international competition showcasing the best work in professional voiceover acting, creative direction and communications for advertising, audiobook narration, movie trailers, video gaming, animation, radio, television and casting realms. Entries were submitted from various entities including: Wendy’s, Telemundo, Discovery Channel, CNN, NBC Sports, ABC Entertainment, Comedy Central, Oxygen Network, NBA on TNT, FOX, Ovation Network and many others. “The 2015 Voice Arts® Awards ceremony was full of excitement, and the recognition that was given to the leading talents in voiceover gathered from around the world—both the nominees and winners—was well deserved and long overdue,” said Rudy Gaskins, CEO of the Society of Voice Arts and Sciences™. “The participation of all of our supporters, including general attendees, presenters, sponsors, voice actors and volunteers, enabled us to have a vibrant evening of awarding accomplishments in voice arts, while also bringing joy at a time of international tragedy, as the ceremony was held in the hours after the Paris terror attacks.” One special announcement made at the ceremony was by presenter Ed Loh, the editor in chief of Motor Trend Magazine, who shared that in 2016, the Voice Arts® Awards will open special automotive categories, for TV, radio, in-theater and web, where voiceover is the driving force behind the creativity. These new categories will cover more than just the cars themselves, but voiceover driven communications (commercials, etc.) about car parts, car racing, and TV shows about cars.

HW: Tell me a little about some of the contemporary projects that you are involved with. Tell me about Color Struck. How did that begin? DL: Color Struck is a one-man show that examines institutionalized racism in America, and the need for more diversity and inclusion. Color Struck uses comedy, drama, visuals, music and movement to tell my life experiences as a light skinned Black man growing up at the height of the black consciousness movement. When I was a kindergartner, because I was a lighter skinned Black boy, a young kid, told me I was not colored (we were called colored back then). I got into a shouting match with this kid. I remember we almost got into a fight on the playground and I ran off and told my mother somebody said I wasn’t colored. I had become aware of that because almost everyone else in my family was of a darker persuasion. It was something that I was confronted with everyday. I realized that a lot of the racial issues that I had to deal with from my own people, including my skin color and hair texture, were due to institutionalized racism. I didn’t realize it but the piece was brewing in my consciousness. I joined Campo Santo one of San Francisco’s best theater companies, around 1999 and started writing Color Struck. HW: I would be remiss if I did not pay homage to your daughter. And in doing so, tell me a little about how she has inspired you throughout these years. DL: Wow thank you for that question. Well, she first inspired me on January 24, 1981. The day before, her mom and I had

missing in the world today. She was just a wonderful young lady. She was very boisterous, she had a personality times 10 and everyone loved her. The other kids would flock around her like moths to a light. She was a conflict resolution mediator at her high school. I remember her advisers and teachers telling me she that was the only one who could navigate all of the races and bring them together whenever there was a dispute between black and white or black and brown or PacificIslander or whomever. That’s just who she was and her name really described her. A few weeks before she was murdered, her friend, a 17 year old kid named James Valery, who also LOESHE

lived in the neighborhood, was killed. She was very moved and upset by his killing and said, “I want to do something.” She said she wanted me to help her write a play to honor her friend and speak out against violence. I just remembered that I grabbed, kissed and hugged her and said, “I am so proud of you.” And I was moved to tears. Even though she was grieving, she was still strong and passionate about doing something positive about his murder. A couple of months later she was coming home from her job at McDonald’s waiting at the bus stop with her childhood friend. A young man, who they knew from the neighborhood saw them at the bus stop and gave them a ride. My daughter was sitting behind the driver. The girls didn’t know that he had a beef with someone earlier

He ducked and some of the gunfire hit her and she died instantly. I am still devastated and shocked. Some days are better than others but that night was the worst night of my life. I was actually at the Improv Night Club in LA when I got the 911 page on October 20, 1997 from my wife. My initial response was that I wanted revenge. I started making all types of calls and people were calling me saying that they knew who it was. I was on the phone all that night. My mentor, Joe Rudolph, who

Now here we are years later and Chris is packaging and financing films that I have written and will be directing.Chris is a very smart guy with tons of experience and he and I hit it off immediately when we got back together at the end of 2013. With two seasons of The Qin Empire now a big hit around the world, Qin Dynasty culture has become a popular trend in the globe. The series won the Flying Goddess Award and the Golden Eagle Prize for the Best TV Drama. To meet the great fervor from audiences, The Qin Empire III will be broadcast soon in a whole new perspective on pursuing the rise of Chinese civilization and the Qin Dynasty, presenting a passionate drama, full of struggle, action and intrigue. With each episode costing over $300,000 and over 20 million dollars for the entire season, The Qin Empire III will set a new record for historical dramas. It was reported that there will be over 300 famous historical figures in the play; in order to precisely interpret these characters, Yang Jiao, the producer, invited the Hei Ding as the director, and the Golden Rooster Prize winner, Jing Ning as the leading actress. In addition, well-known actor Lu Ning, Bo Zhang, and other talented stars joined the crew. Such a star-studded masterpiece is making this season the most anticipated historical TV drama in 2016. At the time, it will be broadcast in the US, Canada, China, TaiWan, Japan, Korea, and so on.

BEING DIFFERENT FROM HER FORMER “THE GIRL NEXT DOOR” IMAGE, LU NING IS GLAMOROUS, ELEGANT AND DELICATE AS THE PRINCESS OF QIN EMPIRE IN ANCIENT COSTUME.

The new season will showcase a more splendid story: In 307 BC, the Qin history’s longest-serving king: Zhaoxiang King, YingJi won the throne. Fiftysix years in the subsequent period during his tenure, his mother (Queen Xuan) and his uncle (Wei Ran) cultivated him from an inexperienced king to a sophisticated, determined, and dignified lord, who ensured Qin Empire’s rising status among the nations. With King Mother Xuan, strategist Su Qin, and the top of the four “God of War” Baiqi’s assistance, YingJi employed two dedicated national policy , which were “ share benefits and forces” and “conquer the neighboring while bond with the distant”, to bring down Yiqu and build the Great Wall. His tactics hurt Qi Empire badly, and captured the capital of Chu; on the contrary, he won the admiration from Wei and Han Empire. The most successful and fiercest war was the Battle of Changping that devastated the strongest enemy, Zhao Empire, even destroyed Western Zhou Dynasty. Since then, Qin suppressed all opposing states, which kicked off Ying Zheng’s unified dominance of China after 86 years. The costumes, props and makeup are quite elaborate as well, running a total cost of over one million dollars. The Qin Empire’s princess, who is also later the queen of Qin Dynasty, played by Lu Ning, requires over a dozen handmade customized costume sets alone.
