A LETTER FROM
THE EDITOR
JULY 2014, VOL. 15
PUBLISHER/EDITOR IN CHIEF Prather Jackson VICE PRESIDENT Bernice Harris Michael D. Coxson
Dear Readers,
OPERATIONS Erskine D. McSwain (1991-2000)
July is a very special issue of Hollywood Weekly Magazine. In many ways one could say it’s about you. All of us. Finding ourselves. Loving ourselves. Loving art, and the art and beauty of “change.”
MANAGING EDITOR Prather Jackson
Our Cover Story on Art Broker Jimmy D. Robinson is an exquisite piece of prose by writer James Gurrie. Robinson is a poet, a recording artist, a composer and professional chef -- his taste in art is as richly textured as the master artworks he brokers. Psychic Medium Vincent Genna is also a poet. Working as a psychotherapist and a metaphysician for the last thirty years has given him an almost Shakespearean insight into human nature, and our In-Depth Focus on Vincent coincides with his highly anticipated July 26th workshop in Culver City. Mehul B. Anjaria is a different kind of artist: his art gallery is a computer, and his works of art are our DNA, which he studies to prove the innocence of his clients and defend our legal right to dues process. Finally, we have Andrea Carr, whose poignant novel “Family Tree” unravels the barbed wire of secrets entwined around and destroying an American family. Andrea has created characters that you wish could hear your screams of advice to them through the pages, but there’s nothing you can do to protect them -their story has been written. This July issue of HWM is an emotional journey of selfawareness, self-discovery, and finding joy in the world we live in. To love, to art and to the truth -- enjoy!

AKE YOUR TIME, DO THINGS RIGHT AND, MOST OF ALL, BE HONEST. THAT WILL BRING YOU LOTS OF BUSINESS AND PERSONAL JOY.
It
is 4:00 a.m. and the alarm goes off. Most people are just rolling over for another few hours of sleep before they start their day. Art broker Jimmy D Robinson relishes his early rise each morning before daybreak and eagerly makes his way to his espresso maker. While enjoying a shot of robust java, Robinson spends quality time with his three adoring cats. By 4:30 a.m. daily, he makes his way outdoors to power-walk along the beach in Lake Worth, Florida for 30 minutes then to the local sports club for a 45-minute workout. During his morning exercise routine, in order to take advantage of the time difference, Robinson will begin to communicate with clients in Asia and Europe for deals in progress. Robinson is on his phone for almost the entire day. It is the lifeline of his “virtual art gallery.”
“I only take on what I know I can sell. I don’t want to waste anyone’s time, including my own” Do not jump to conclusions that Jimmy D Robinson is rigid in his routine and schedule. He is a rare businessman who lives in the moment and is truly grateful for each day he gets to do what he loves. As a young man, Robinson went through much self-discovery, as do many artistic people. His love of the arts spans numerous areas from fine art to music to poetry and even to JULY 2014 - 11
epicurean artistry. He is a man of action and has pursued many of these passions. Robinson is an accomplished poet with more than 13 published poetry books, a music producer and recording artist with a catalog of over 277 music compositions and he is a trained Cordon Bleu chef. Now age 50, it wasn’t until ten years ago that Mr. Robinson realized his true calling as a high-end art broker. Although Robinson credits many people for guiding him in the right direction, his art broker career has been legitimately selfmade from day one. His work ethic, colorful personality, and excellent eye for fine art have combined to make him successful, even during difficult economic times. Clients contact Jimmy D Robinson, Inc., Rare Art Collections, through referrals
or the Internet, both if they have contemporary and modern paintings, sculptures, or watercolors they wish to sell and when, as buyers, they are seeking something genuine and extraordinary to purchase. “I only take on what I know I can sell. I don’t want to waste anyone’s time, including my own,” says the outspoken Jimmy. One thing Jimmy does not divulge is how he attracts his buyers or their identities (without their permission). After 10 years in business, he has amassed a large pool of
“MY LIFE IS BEYOND MY WILDEST DREAMS TODAY, PROBABLY BECAUSE I HAVE NEVER STOPPED CHASING MY DREAMS” affluent buyers as clients, which includes celebrities, corporate executives, successful entrepreneurs, and art investors. They value their privacy and have come to respect his judgment, integrity and honesty. Through his contacts in the U.S. and abroad, Jimmy has been able to access many works of art never before offered for sale at auction or commercially, making such works especially rare and desirable. “Quality and rarity make an artwork easier to broker. Before 2008, everything sold – rare art, good art, and not-so-well-known art,” states Robinson. “It has become much harder 12 - HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
to close deals on everything since the economy crashed. People are definitely more cautious and selective in their buying. This unfortunately, makes it much harder for new and upcoming artists to survive and prosper.” Jimmy only takes on art he believes he can find a home for. “What I have found in the last five years is that the high-end art actually is easier to sell. Mind you, price does make a difference to everyone. It is all relative. Everyone wants a good deal. Robinson sells paintings and sculptures as low as $5000 and up to the many millions of dollars. One of Robinson’s specialties is
brokering large collections of art and rare Asian and Contemporary Art. “When there is a large collection of artwork that I admire and believe in available from an artist, who may have passed-on, I sometimes will purchase it myself. I am able to sell the whole body of work to hotels or corporations for offices and building lobbies,” explains Robinson. “I market it and sometimes consign it to art galleries around the world, if the artist and collection is well-known. I hope that eventually the collection catches on and its value appreciates on the world market.” To guard against counterfeit art, Jimmy works closely with consummate
art specialists and experts to double and triple check the authenticity of the artwork being brokered, so that buyers can be confident they are purchasing an authentic piece. “I guarantee all my sales. My trusted reputation means everything to me,” states Robinson. “Paying people immediately as agreed upon is a large part of my job too. I am probably the only art broker in this day and age that pays immediately upon closing a sale. I don’t hang onto anyone’s money. Everyone is paid immediately. The buyer receives the art immediately after the seller receives payment.” All in a day’s work for this self-made successful art dealer has included brokering transactions and or working with Cola Cola Corporation, Hartman, Baskin Robbins, the Kessler Hotel Group,
Schlotzsky Bagels Corporation, plus rare works from the Royal Palace in Haiti, Large Mansions in Palm Beach, and Beverly Hills including many other great artworks throughout the world. “It is never dull,” states Robinson, who lives part of the time in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he keeps a second home. “My life is beyond my wildest dreams today, probably because I have never stopped chasing my dreams,” he declares. Asked what his motto is, or if he has wise words for anyone interested in pursuing a career in the art world, Robinson offers: “Take your time, do things right and, most of all, be honest. That will bring you lots of business and personal joy.” These are words to live by, indeed. For more on Jimmy D. Robinson’s art brokerage firm please visit: http://www.jimmydrobinson. net.

IN-DEPTH REVIEW:
“Family Tree” Andrea Carr’s
WRITTEN BY ANTHONY EWART
You don’t have to like people to be a writer. That’s a fact. Some authors can describe characters brilliantly. You can picture them in your mind, envision them walking down a sidewalk in front of you – but that’s as far as you go. Like strangers you see walking around, you can guess what they’re thinking about, but you can never know. Even if you had coffee with some of them and engaged in small talk, what could you glean from such a shallow interaction?
T
his is not the case with author Andrea Carr and her new novel “Family Tree.” Her characters never leave your side, even after the book is closed. Like ghosts they live with you, haunting you with their pain. What does this prove? It proves Andrea Carr loves people. She loves telling their stories. Only a writer with this level of love can make characters on a page this real...but be warned, this is a blessing and a curse, because the pain these characters endure is raw and sensitive to the touch; their lives the equivalent of an open wound. Aristotle described the elements in Andrea Carr’s Family Tree in his “Poetics,” where he famously stated that the goal of Greek Tragedies was “to bring about a catharsis of the spectators — to arouse in them sensations of pity and fear, and to purge them of these emotions so that they leave the theater feeling cleansed and uplifted.” 18 - HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
Franz Kafka went even further, saying, “What we need are books that hit us like a most painful misfortune, like the death of someone we loved more than we love ourselves.” These two quotes are what I constantly had to remind myself of while reading Family Tree – I had to experience the lives of these characters; somehow, at the other end of this novel, I would grow as a human being. As Aristotle said, my emotions would be purged. Andrea Carr worked as a Psychiatric Technician for the State of California, and it shows in her literary understanding of the human condition. Family Tree is a first-person narrative, and we’re guided through the branches of this family by Angel Harper, a character who is a testament to the incredible strength of a woman. If you were to condense the townspeople of Grace Metalious’ “Peyton Place” to one family, you’d have Family Tree. The story begins with Angel Harper incarcerated, and learning from her estranged mother by phone that her sister, Lady, has hung herself in the backyard. Angel’s son, Malcolm, who Lady was taking care of, is nowhere to be found. I haven’t read an opening scene of a novel this potent since anything James M. Cain ever wrote. Slowly, through the steady hand of a literary surgeon, Andrea Carr reveals the sordid secrets of Angel’s family, and the devastating effect it’s had on her siblings. Family Tree is a novel that is begging for a sequel. I want to know what happens to these characters. Angel’s bond with her son, Malcolm, is a saga I want to read more about. I want to see how Angel and her mother are able to move such a volatile relationship with each other forward – beyond the final pages of this book. Like Grace Metalious’ 1959 follow-up novel “Return to Peyton Place,” I’m ready to start a campaign for Andrea Carr’s follow-up to Family Tree. May all our emotions be purged...

Let Art Muse LA guide you through an exhibition filled with paintings, drawings and etchings by this avant-garde Belgian artist who invited ridicule and criticism, but also championed a new way of expression through self-invented sarcastic and scandalous imagery. His art making, from painting to drawing and printmaking, is equally aggressive and, yes, scandalous James Ensor is an artist of opposites who was capable of making intricately detailed etchings and drawings filled with bruising imagery. stories one can find in a drop of blood...

ou don’t know darkness until you’re engulfed by it. You don’t know fear until the world ignores your screams. What can you do when your DNA betrays you? When it’s found on the fingernails of a dead man. This isn’t a Raymond Chandler novel, it’s real: DNA transference can put us all at risk. In this case two paramedics sealed the fate of a 26 year old homeless man named Lukis Anderson. The paramedics found Lukis drunk on the street and took him to the hospital, which foreshadowed the famous 12th century proverb by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux: “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” While Lukis was in the hospital millionaire Raveesh Kumra was murdered. The same paramedics who helped Lukis were at the crime scene of Mr. Kumra – somehow they brought Lukis’ DNA with them. Lukis spent five months in jail before his attorney was able to prove the obvious: there’s no physical way in our known Universe that Lukis could have been drunk in a hospital and with Raveesh Kumra at the same time. Everyone claimed the DNA had to be wrong, but it wasn’t, that was the key to understanding this case. If you accepted the premise that it was Lukis’ DNA – and stopped fighting that it wasn’t – your mind would then focus on possible ways that his DNA could end up on Mr. Kumra’s fingernails...which led to the paramedics. This is the world Mehul B. Anjaria lives in. His firm, MBA DNA Consulting, provides DNA consultation to attorneys and individuals defending themselves. This last fact is important because most people don’t know there are specific funds available in the court system for anyone handling their own case who may not have enough money to get DNA testing done. National Gallery, and Serpentine, she is a member of both the Academy Circle for BAFTA (the British Academy of Film and Television Awards) and also Director of the Circle at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Zaha Hadid is a globally renowned architect who created the London Aquatics Centre for the 2012 Olympics. She has also been one of the previously chosen architects for the Serpentine Pavilion and has recently become the first woman to win the Design Museum’s Design of the Year award for the Heyder Aliyev culture centre in Baku. Tuesday evening also offered guests the opportunity to enjoy the 2014 Serpentine Summer Pavilion. Unique to the Serpentine Galleries, this pioneering annual commission offers internationally renowned architects an opportunity to create their first built structure in England. Previous architects who have participated in designing a pavilion for the summer months have included Frank Gehry, Oscar Niemeyer and Jean Nouvel. This year’s architect, Smiljan Radic from Chile, has created the 14th pavilion which will extend some 350 square metres across the lawn. He sees his design as being in the tradition
REBECCA WANG, BRADLEY COOPER AND PHARRELL WILLIAMS of the popular follies built in parks or large gardens between the 16th and 19th centuries, and describes it as: “a fragile shell suspended on large quarry stones. This shell, white, translucent and made of fibreglass will house an interior organised around a patio. At night, thanks to the semitransparency of the shell, the amber-tinted light will attract the attention of passers-by, like lamps attracting moths.” From the patio inside the pavilion, the natural setting will seem lower, with the sensation that the entire volume is floating. During its four month tenure in the park, the Pavilion will serve as a flexible multi-purpose social space with a café inside, and on Fridays will be the stage for the Galleries Park Nights – eight specific events incorporating art, poetry, music, film, literature and theory along with three new commissions by emerging artists. The evening was sponsored by luxury Italian brand Brioni and organised by Events Fusion.

VINCENT GENNA, MSW Author Spiritual Teacher Speaker Psychic Medium
W
I
e are all searching for answers in life. We want to know the truth of who we are and why we are here. Many of us look to get those answers from psychics. There is one renowned psychic, in the league of the greats like John Edwards, James Van Praagh, Hans King, and Sylvia Browne, who stands out in that he combines his talent as a psychic medium with his experience as a psychotherapist and metaphysical teacher to make us face our truth. According to Vincent, it is only by really facing our truth that we can begin to remove the blockages that are keeping us from leading the rewarding and prosperous life we crave.
had a chance to talk with Vincent recently, in advance of his workshop in Culver City on July 26. Vincent has been through too much personal trauma and transformation in his life to look you in the eyes and only tell you what you want to hear. To Vincent, the ONLY thing that will heal you and the world as a whole is admitting you don’t believe what you think you believe, and you don’t believe in yourself! The main obstacle Vincent Genna faces every day with people who seek him out is that the majority of them have a lower opinion of themselves then they are able to recognize and admit. In other words, we stop ourselves from achieving the lives we want because we don’t believe we are worthy, good enough, or deserving of abundant lives, and we are denying those feelings and beliefs every day. This concept is 28 - HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
at the centerpiece of Vincent’s philosophy. “We’re all very comfortable deceiving ourselves on a daily basis because it’s too painful to face the truth, and even with the truth in hand, changing seems like such a far, unattainable journey. Lying makes us feel better, but one day that fake world will start to fall apart and the result is crisis occurring with our jobs, health, finances, and relationships,” says Vincent. “Eventually, you must face your inner core beliefs about yourself because whatever they are, they will manifest themselves in your outer world. That is the power we have!” Vincent Genna teaches why the Universal Laws, such as the Law of Attraction and the Law of Manifestation, aren’t working – it’s because you are processing and attempting to assimilate those beliefs from a deceptive and defensive mind—the Adult-Made Mind (AMM), labeled by Vincent.
Vincent discovered, in his 30 years of research and experience as a psychotherapist and metaphysician, that the AMM is a defensive mind created by our brains to protect us from those hurtful self-beliefs that formed during our childhoods. A new set of false beliefs about yourself and the world form here to make you feel better and cope in life. However, nothing created by this mind is real or true. Therefore, while you are trying to believe you deserve and can manifest abundance, somewhere in your mind you truly believe you don’t deserve it or can’t create it. The beliefs that are influencing your true self-perceptions, Vincent explained, are stored as scars in your Environmental-Made Mind (EMM), which developed during your childhood from the negative conscious and unconscious messages you heard from your environment. I believe Vincent when he says, “It doesn’t matter what you read or practice if you don’t believe in yourself. That’s the heat and power that turns everything you attempt into fruition!” Vincent now dedicates his life to empower people to believe in themselves, because he knows firsthand the pain you experience when you don’t. A workshop with Vincent will have you facing your emotional scars and stop fooling yourself; then he reinforces the greatness and beauty of your true self. Finding these unique aspects of the human mind is like discovering a new life. It
puts full control and power over your life into your hands. As a child, Vincent was a victim of relentless bullying and parental emotional and physical abuse. On top of that, he was sexually molested by an older male when he was nine years old...there was more. Vincent survived school marred in dark emotions. His redeeming quality, however, was his tremendous talent: he was a performer. Through performing, Vincent found love and acceptance, though fleeting. He became a professional, full-time actor, and worked for years. Vincent’s unexpected breakthrough came with a role in Grease – which coincided perfectly with his 10-year high school reunion. Vincent owned that reunion with the fame Grease instantly obtained. For anyone who was ever bullied in school, we can all share that moment of triumph. One of Vincent’s primary bullies embraced and befriended him that evening, with a heartfelt appeal for forgiveness. That same reformed bully’s life was in anguish, and equal to a plot from Sophocles, Vincent’s pledge to help heal this new friend started Vincent on his present course and mission. He has a new pledge and dedication now—to empower all of us to unconditionally love and believe in ourselves, and use our unique individual gifts to fulfill our dreams and create the lives we desire and deserve.

hese four proposals, with perspectives ranging from experimental, artisanal, and philosophical issues, seem to differ from each other greatly. However, if carefully examined, we find that at the core of this sample of work lies the work of the metaphysical, the magical, and the artistic. The aforementioned then becomes evident, for it
A body of work by Ka r e n P e r r y The complexity of forms and colors that create the seabed, as well as the strange beauty its inhabitants possess, are the creative fuel in this series of work. The colonies of anemones, the coral reefs, the kelp forests, and even the hair-raising jelly fish, all form part of the reconfigured repertoire that is appreciated in this body of work. Many phenomena and lighting effects occur beneath oceanic waters. One example is how the color red becomes almost invisible in the depths of the sea; perhaps that is why it is the most undetected of all the camouflage colors for those creatures that live in the abyss. The puzzle pieces represent that very variety of color and form. These small pieces of cardboard correspond to each other in an order specific to the image they create and they offer a large amount of variation and possibility. As the constructive medium, the puzzle pieces create forms that transition between the second and third dimensions, giving what was once a puzzle, a whole new meaning. Simulated landscapes, symmetrical forms, volumes and cavities are my own aesthetic exploration, which reference the strange beauties that live in the depths of the sea. Meanwhile, Ru l o R e ye s discusses the deconstruction and reconstruction of form by removing objects used for cultivation from their common function. By doing so, Reyes creates codes that talk to us about work on the field as well as the making of the dress or hupil, traditional to the Triquis culture (native to San Martin Itunyoso, Oaxaca). Through his art Reyes highlights the features that characterize a specific legacy where traditions are part of the essence of human life.

is process art (the search for concepts in this world where ideas appear to be a dark hole) that brings these artists together. The formulation of a logical language in an era of growth and artistic maturity puts judgment on the line for much of the work that could potentially result from it. However, in these four young artists lies evidence that all is moving in the right direction.
On one hand, P aulo Jacobo , finds himself on a quest to represent the ethereal, the ephemeral, within the world in which we move, stating that we are, like universal matter, continuously unfolding within ourselves. The body is composed not only of what it is physically made out of, but also of the interaction between its physical buildup and the things that surround it. Using the fume technique, Jacobo elaborates on representations of his own body by pressing it against the smoked surface. As a result, imprints of the body itself are transferred onto paper, creating drawings of the same constant and fleeting nature that we as humans experience in this life.
R oberto R azo , on the other hand, fills his pieces with moments of controlled experimentation, bringing to light the atavistic nature and unconscious abstractions that are vital to the making of process art. In this manner, Razo opens the door to countless possibilities within the realm of experimental design.

riginally developed by PR veteran, Linda Luna of The PowerHouse Agency, The ESPYS Trendsetters Suite was meant to cater to a universal celebrity crowd, especially the male celebrity. With years of participating in a variety of gifting suites with her clients, Linda began to notice a lack of products CARISSA ROSARIO AND JAMES ANDERSON - BM available to her male clients, specifically athletes, which eventually would turn her clients off from attending anymore gifting suites. In 2014 as the ESPY’s were approaching, Linda decided to create her own gifting suite and brought on Brittany Gilman of BG Sports Enterprises Inc. to help facilitate this special event. Together they created The Trendsetters Suite and partnered with a variety of brands that would not only cater to the male celebrity but would also reignite a positive gifting experience for athletes and celebrities. Held at Philippe’s, a popular Beverly Hills establishment, the Trendsetters Suite not only attracted over 40 athletes and celebrities but also gave them an unforgettable gifting experience. The Trendsetters Suite is excited for next upcoming gifting suite during the MTV Awards next month.
