Tia Boyd Executive & Creative Producer, NAACP Theatre Award Show Founder, NAACP Theatre Festival
The Board of Directors of the Beverly Hills/Hollywood NAACP are honored to present the City of Los Angeles the NAACP Theatre Awards. Our mission is to acknowledge and honor individuals who have excelled in the age-old art that is theatre. W.E.B. DuBois announced that four attributes of African theatre must be recognized and maintained. African theatre, DuBois asserted, must be “. . . about us . . . by us . . . for us . . . near us.” The NAACP Theatre Awards Show seeks to increase the general community’s participation in the African American Community highlighting the attributes prescribed by W.E.B. Dubois. Through pioneering creative efforts, African theatre has become functional, collective, and committed as reflected in the unique rituals and particular historical perspectives of African and African American people. African theatre is ritualized through music, poetry, dance, folklore, and religion, thus creating a theatre art form that serves a greater purpose than theatre for theatre’s sake. The mission of African theatre, therefore, is to strengthen our identity, confirm our history, and concretize our future directions. Tonight, we congratulate and honor the distinguished talents of James Pickens, Jr. whose acting roles have helped to create positive African American Images on television and Stephen Byrd and Alia Jones whose Broadway successes are blazing a trail that include highlighting Nicole Ari Parker in her exceptional performance in “Street Car Named Desire” emanating the Spirit that is Theatre. My friend and co-founder of the NAACP Theatre Awards, Willis Edwards who has cast a bright light on the path I walk will receive the Humanitarian Award. It is with great respect and admiration that we spend the evening acknowledging these amazing people and highlighting their contributions in our communities. Many volunteers spend numerous hours viewing plays and working on planning committees for the Show. Thank you for your time, dedication and your commitment to the Show’s excellence. Our sponsors are our partners. Partnership expresses a mutual desire to successfully achieve the same goal. Our partners are committed to raising awareness and supporting diversity in the Los Angeles Community. Thank you for continuing to be a part of the solution. To the Theatre Community, thank you for entertaining us.

T
he 22nd Annual NAACP Theater Awards was held on Monday, November 5, 2012 at 6 P.M. at the famous Directors Guild of America in Hollywood, California. Located right along the world renowned Sunset Boulevard, The NAACP Theater Awards was the place to be. Upon entry, guests felt like royalty as they walked the red carpet to enter. Whether it was for support of the art, supporting a fellow colleague, or a nominee for an award, the energy on this particular night was at an all time high as everyone gathered on the red carpet. The NAACP Theater Awards was presented by the beautiful, chic, and oh so glam Eva Marcille and the hilarious George Wallace. Many remember Eva from the hit television show, ‘Americas Next Top Model’. Since then her career has soared as she has reached new heights that she has never been able to envision. Her response was ‘are you serious or are you punking me”, she jokingly stated. “It truly is an honor to even be considered for a position like this, and as an actor tonight is such a great night because we are honoring those unseen forces, the ones you do not see in front of the television or on the billboards, she explains, because in today’s society if you are not on screen you are ‘no where’, so to be here tonight is an honor [it’s] to support the amazing men and women who have put crazy hours and hard work to really tell ‘our’ story, and to portray us in a light that is more dignified as black people - I am just so happy to be here tonight, it is MY joy!” Talking with Eva Marcille really put things into perspective, she was full of energy and had words of wisdom for the younger generation, needless to say our conversation was a rarity and a great way to enlighten the vision on the evening as well as gain insight on the NAACP Theater Awards and its entirety. “If it comes to supporting each other and doing good will for the artscount me in, Brian White continued, I’m glad to be a part of this great event, as it is my third time presenting.” The awards include 32 categories that encompass local and equity nominations. Categories included: Best Choreography, Best Costumes, Best Director, Best Director of a Musical, Best Ensemble Cast, Best Lead Female, Best Lead Male, Best Lighting, Best Music Director, Best One Person Show, Best Producer, Best Set Design, Best Sound, Best Supporting Female, Best Supporting Male, and Best Playwright. This year’s ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ went to James Pickens, Jr. “I guess my time’s up,” he joked as he made his entrance. A man of many traits, Pickens is known to have a wide range of interests and passions and has now come full circle. Seven-time NAACP Image Award nominee, Nicole Ari Parker received the ‘Spirit Award’, and Alia M. Jones and Stephen P. Byrd received this years ‘Trailblazer Award.’
This year’s nominations included “Twist” - an American Musical acquiring seven theatre nominations and directed by Golden Globe and multi-Emmy AwardWinner Debbie Allen. Not too far behind and tied with “Blues For An Alabama Sky” for the second place in most nominations, “Fela!” was recognized with five nominations. This includes Best Director of a Musical-Local for Tony Award-Winner Bill T. Jones and then to Shawn “JayZ” Carter, Will and Jada Smith, and Ruth and Stephen Hendel for Best Producer-Equity. Another well-known play, “A Raisin In The Sun”, had several nominations including Best Director- Equity to Phylicia Rashad. Last, but definitely not least was in the local Best Director of a Musical category, writer/producer Bill Reid for “Rockin’ In The Ages” that went up against Anne Gesling for “Chicago” and “Parade” directed by Ben Lupejkis. Opening set consisted of dance infused with theater combinations, choreographed by none other than Sakinah LeStage. Sakinah has worked with some of the top names in the industry and has a impressive roster and genre of skills and definitely knows how to make a performance come to life. More than an awards show, the NAACP Theater Awards is in a league of its own. Highlighting and honoring individuals that are the embodiment of theater, ‘Hollywood icons and idols’ that have been beaming in the light. These actors are truly skilled in their craft and have a unique talent that only few genuinely encompass. Energy, passion, and dedication are the mantra of these individuals as they continue to relentlessly showcase their talent to enlighten the younger generation and support each other as well as new comers to the arts. Montblanc honors Quincy Jones
at the Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award Ceremony
Now in its 21st year, The Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award was established to honor and support individuals who have given exceptional time, energy, and funds to artists and their work. To be chosen, a winning patron has to demonstrate not only a history of personal commitment to the arts, but also a concern that the wider public should benefit as a result of that support. Jones was chosen in recognition of his role in supporting, nurturing, and guiding the music industry throughout the 21st Century. The key factor of the Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award is the $20,000 Montblanc will donate to the Jazz Foundation of America, a non-profit organization dedicated to the financial and medical support of aging jazz musicians.
“What a total incredible moment it was tonight to see Quincy Jones, Sidney Poitier and Morgan Freeman all on one stage together at the same time... Lisa Jamaal 8 - Hollywood WEEKLY

Eva Marcille Growing up in Southern California, Eva Marcille’s family dubbed her “Eva the Diva” early on, because of her self-assured attitude and her eye for fashion. The young Eva was always the center of attention, and always managed to steal the spotlight from whomever it may have been on. As a child Eva had lofty ambitions for her ability to sway opinion—that of a Supreme Court Justice. After completing grade school in California Eva moved to the east coast to attend Clark Atlanta University, one of the nation’s top historically black colleges, where she majored in Speech Communications with an emphasis in Theatre and minored in Criminal Justice. As a freshman, Eva so excelled in the Debate and Forensics Society that she was quickly elected their president. An outstanding student, Eva had been granted early admission into Vanderbilt Law School when she was selected to be a part of the third cycle of America’s Next Top Model. Eva was one hard cookie on the highest rated season to date of Tyra Banks’ hit modeling show. Over the course of the show, Eva blossomed from a tough, street-savvy girl to a nice, fashion-savvy and elegant cover girl. Eva won the competition over the other finalists proving that she deserved everything she worked so hard for. Although America’s Next Top Model made her famous, Eva has been modeling and working longer than most people know. Having been featured in numerous photo shoots with accomplished fashion photographers, she starred in the independent feature film, The Walk, during her freshman year in college. Following her ANTM win, Eva became an international runway sensation, and has since graced the covers of countless American and European fashion magazines and appeared in numerous fashion campaigns. Eva’s acting career has also taken off. After recurring and guest star roles on Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, Smallville, and Everybody Hates Chris, Eva had a leading role in Sony Pictures’ film Crossover, and Chris Rock wrote a supporting role just for her in his Fox Searchlight feature, I Think I Love My Wife. During her first pilot season, she landed a series regular role in Aaron Spelling’s pilot, The Wedding Album. A lead role in the independent film, Premium, followed. Eva also served as the co-creator and producer of BET J’s hit fashion series My Model Looks Better Than Your Model. Presently, Eva is a series regular on the #1 daytime drama on television, CBS’s The Young & the Restless.

George Wallace Born in Atlanta, Georgia on July 21, 1952, George Wallace grew up in a loving, religious family. From the age of 6 he dreamed of becoming a comedian. When he was 16 his mother passed away and he moved to Ohio, where he later enrolled at the University of Akron. Upon graduation he moved to New York City to pursue the comedic dream he had since he was young. At first, success in comedy proved elusive and Wallace worked as a salesman for an advertising agency to pay the bills. Wallace’s break came in 1977 when one of his clients opened a comedy club. Amused by his natural humor and likeable personality, the owner offered him a chance to perform. Wallace walked on stage for the first time wearing a preacher’s robe and called himself the Reverend Dr. George Wallace. His routine was completely improvised, yet it included the same imagery and delivery of the spiritual leaders who had influenced him as a child. Crowds loved him, so he stayed in New York for several years, perfecting his craft and living with friend and fellow comedian Jerry Seinfeld. In 1978, Wallace moved to the West Coast, where he quickly became recognized as a talented young comedian. After one of his performances, producers from The Redd Foxx Show asked him to write for the popular series. He became a regular at the legendary Comedy Store and also took his comedy show on the road, opening for the likes of George Benson, Diana Ross, Donna Summer and Smokey Robinson. After being nominated for four years in a row, Wallace won for Best Male Standup Comedian during the 1995 American Comedy Awards. He was a regular on The Tom Joyner Morning Show and partnered with Issac Hayes on a popular radio program on WRKS in New York. His work on television ranges from his own HBO special to appearances on Seinfield, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Scrubs and The Tonight Show. Wallace’s unique brand of social commentary has proved popular with audiences for over 30 years now. Currently, Wallace has a headlining show at The Flamingo Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada that has entertained crowds since 2004. Additionally, he calls the Flamingo home and regularly spends time walking the hotel casino floor mingling with hotel guests. With routines inspired by everyday moments, Wallace continues to prove himself as a comedic legend.

Humanitarian Award
B
orn in 1946 on New Year’s Day in Carthage, Texas, he was raised in Palm Springs, California by his beloved mother Anita Hudson Edwards and father, Frank Edwards in Section 14 of the Cahuilla Indian Reservation. During his early years, his mother formed a branch of the NAACP and that was Willis’ first taste of community activism. He entered California State University, Los Angeles and became active in politics, serving on the advance team when Robert F. Kennedy ran for President in 1968. Willis was in the Ambassador Hotel when Kennedy was assassinated. Drafted into service with the United States Army, Willis served in Vietnam and earned a bronze star. Upon his return from Vietnam, he re-entered Cal State LA and became the first African-American Student Body President. In 1970, he became President of the National Student Lobby and traveled to Washington, D.C. to lobby for 18year olds to get the right to vote. The

legislation was carried by Senator Fred Harris of Oklahoma and was passed by Congress. Willis authored an important article for the Los Angeles Times on the significance of the vote for 18–year olds. Willis worked on the successful mayoral campaign for Tom Bradley who after elected appointed Willis to the Social Service Commission making him the youngest ever City Commissioner. And, in 1976 when Mayor Bradley served as Vice-Chair of the Democratic National Convention, and at his behest, Willis led the Pledge of Allegiance before a nationally televised audience. Willis also served on the Delegate Credentials Committee. As Director of Black Student Services at the University of Southern California, working alongside outstanding leaders like, Dr. Thomas Kilgore and the distinguished Professor Dr. June Brown, he impacted the lives of countless Black Students helping many matriculate in the prestigious institution. He brought history to the campus by coordinating visits from legends such as Coretta Scott King and Dick Gregory to name a few. He was elected President of the Beverly Hills/ Hollywood Branch of the NAACP in 1982. Under his leadership the Branch fought many high profile battles for better images and more jobs for African-

Americans in front of and behind the scenes in Hollywood. In 1986 he persuaded, the then NBC President, Brandon Tartikoff to nationally televise the Branch’s Image Awards Program with Willis serving as Executive Producer. The Show has always illuminated the diverse talents of African Americans in front of and behind the camera within the entertainment industry and served as a model for many of today’s award shows. The Image Awards is still a highly regarded event in entertainment. He also led the way as one of the founders of the highly successful Theatre Awards which honors talented African-Americans in Southern California. Willis’ activism was in full throttle after he was diagnosed with AIDS. Then a member of the National Board of the NAACP, he brought the discussion of AIDS to the forefront. He helped established and has served on the HIV/AIDS Committee of the NAACP since 1997. Across the country branches of the NAACP participate in the World AIDS Day. To further spread the word Willis served as Associate Producer on a film produced and directed by Bill Duke’s, “The Faces of Aids” and he spoke across the country and internationally on HIV/AIDS and the disease’s growing threat particularly to the African American Community. He authored an article, “I Am HIV Positive and Still I Rise” that was nationally distributed to media outlets across the country. Willis’ next activist role was to ensure that the life, times and most importantly the legacy of Rosa Parks lived on in American History. Working to promote Rosa Parks through a national exposure campaign while she still lived Willis had Ms. Parks attending the 1998 Oscars, facilitated Ms. Parks being seated next to Hillary Clinton during President Bill Clinton’s 1999 State of the Union Address and interceded on her behalf and negotiated a meeting with Pope John Paul II. He worked tirelessly with Congresswoman Julia Carson of Indiana for Mrs. Parks to receive the Congressional Gold Medal. Upon the death of Ms. Parks, Willis coordinated the funeral with Home Going Celebrations taking place in Washington, D.C., Birmingham, Alabama and Detroit, Michigan. Through Willis’ efforts, Ms. Parks became the first woman and only the second African American ever to lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, D.C. Willis served as Executive Producer of “The Rosa Park’s Story” starring Angela Bassett which aired on CBS. Willis Edwards was the first African-American pictured on the cover of the Los Angeles Times Magazine for a feature article entitled, “A Life Behind the Scenes” written by John Mitchell. Willis has been honored by many National and Local Organizations for his fight for justice and equality as a Humanitarian and Civil Rights Leader. His leadership and advancing skills are unmatched. The Willis Edwards Motto is: “Do What You Can from Where you Are.” The Board of Directors of the Beverly Hills/Hollywood NAACP and our extended family are proud to honor the man who paved the way for us to be standing here today.
