Of CHRISTIAN AUDIGIER

PS: You’re a busy man with, I believe, 180 brand licenses under your belt, is that correct? Give me a snapshot of a day in the life of Christian Audigier. CA: Yes, that is true, I have a 180 licenses so this keeps me very busy. Well, my day begins as I wake up at 5:00 am to enjoy a cup a coffee and read the newspaper. I like to have peaceful time in the morning because my days become very full with little time to relax. I usually arrive to my office at 8:00 am every morning and from there the work begins. Sometimes I am in photo shoots, in interviews, working with my designers or in meetings. Each day my schedule may change however, there is always much work to be done. PS: You have a huge fan base who fill your stores wanting your latest designs. What are you doing that’s different from the rest? CA: Fashion is important, as music is important so that’s why I say I am one of the “Craftsmen of Pop Culture”. People like to wear my fashions, yes but I think it is also the lifestyle they are intrigued by. When wearing my designs you become part of the phenomenon my fashions have become. PS: “King of Fashion” - Wow, that is quite a name coming from the “King of Pop”. How did it feel to have the late Michael Jackson refer to you as the “King of Fashion”? CA: It actually means even more to me today than it did the day he said it to me. Michael was a good man and a man who appreciated fashion. So to have him refer to me as the “King of Fashion” is a huge compliment. Michael liked my designs very much. In fact, when he came to my birthday party he said to me that he would like to make a collection with me. We had planned to pursue this venture together however, unfortunately Michael passed away before we were able to begin. I am however, planning to still do this though. I want to

6

HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

do this because of my promise to Michael. PS: Speaking of Michael Jackson, here is your chance to clarify all the talk surrounding your connection to the home MJ lived in when he passed away. Is the infamous Holmby Hills estate yours or are you leasing it? And what are your plans for it? CA: I am leasing the home and was considering this prior to the passing of my friend, Michael Jackson. At this time, I am not doing much with it. I will probably have occasional dinners there from time to time for now. Eventually I would like to use the home to display memorabilia I have of not only Michael Jackson but of other elite celebrities as well. I love to collect things and I would like to use this home to display my special collections. PS: With all you have done to influence your fans there must be something that inspires you, what is it? CA: What inspires me the most is watching people walking in the street, standing in line at Starbucks or just sitting inside a café. I look at what they are wearing and I watch the way they move. This I find to be very inspiring to me. PS: Through your international companies you have launched a portfolio of nine fashion forward designer brands, including Ed Hardy®, Christian Audigier®, Smet™, Crystal Rock™, Rock Fabulous™, Evel Knievel®, C-Bar-A™, Savior Faire™, Paco Chicano™. Knowing you, there is more ahead. What’s your next line going to be? CA: I have launched a new collection with humanitarian fashion OmniPeace. Every time you purchase an Ed Hardy/OmniPeace product, 25% of the profits are donated to charities supporting peace, education, human rights, and the end of extreme poverty in Africa by 2025. In these times it is important to stand for something more than

Of CHRISTIAN AUDIGIER fashion itself. My wife and I support this cause, founded by Mary Fanaro, as do many celebrities who are involved such as David Beckham, Courteney Cox, Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Aniston, Zac Efron, Sheryl Crow and many more. PS: Wow, what an amazing thing you are doing with OmniPeace, this all sounds very exciting and so worthwhile. So tell me, is there anything else we might be seeing from you soon? CA: Well I have not yet announced it, so you are the first to hear it. I am actually working on a secret line that will surprise people very much. It’s something that I have never done before, I am going to make a plain t-shirt with no design in solid colors and the name of this line is going to be called “The Same Guy”. This is the complete opposite of what I do now. I know it seems strange but to be honest sometimes you just need a plain shirt to wear so I want to have that option available as well. PS: Tell me about your 17-year-old daughter, Crystal. What was it that sparked her interest in creating her brand, “Crystal Rock”? CA: I am very proud of my Crystal; she is a good girl and

8

HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

does very well in school. You know it’s actually a great story. Crystal came to me one day and said she would like to buy a Louis Vuitton handbag and I said to her that is very expensive and that she must work for it. So she came to work with me one day last summer and began to work with one of my designers and created “Crystal Rock”. The line has become very successful and so she is doing very well. PS: It’s every designers hope to have celebrities wearing their clothes. You have multiple celebrities wearing your fashions and wanting more. How did you create that desire? CA: I believe it is the recipe of many things mixed together. It’s the lifestyle, the attitude and the pop culture all coming together as one. In many ways I am the designer of many celebrities and I love it. PS: There is so much told about you to the point where it seems you have no secrets. So tell me something that no one would ever know about you? CA: I am shy (laughs)… No, I am not shy. To be honest there is really nothing, I am very open. Well ok, there is one thing I think it will surprise everyone and that is I am looking to invest in Club Med. I am

currently trying to get a part of it so stay tuned on that. PS: Now that you’ve opened your first “Christian Audigier the Nightclub” in Las Vegas can we expect to see more? CA: Yes, definitely. I have a “Christian Audigier the Nightclub” opening in New York in October and soon one in Dubai. I also will be opening a restaurant in Dubai, “Christian Audigier Restaurant”. PS: Rumor has it you’re hitting the big screen. Is this true? Will we be seeing you starring in a motion picture soon? CA: Yes, this is true. I love the film industry and I’ve always wanted to be part of it. I have been shooting a film by a French Director, “537 Fahrenheit”. I have a role in it and I have really enjoyed the experience. The plans are that it will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010. PS: Sounds like your schedule is filled daily and you are so committed to your work. But what happens when your day of work is done and what can you be found doing on the weekends? CA: I am home at 6 o’clock every night. As soon as I come home it is all about my four

children, my family is very important to me. We have a light dinner, we relax and then I like to go to sleep early, like by 9 – 10 o’clock I am asleep. On the weekend I like to go to my ranch in Topanga Canyon. So every Friday I go with my family to our ranch and we go back to my home in Los Angeles on Sunday to start the next week. My family is my priority, it is very important to me to spend time with them as much as possible. PS: Is there anything left? What else is yet to be created by Christian Audigier? CA: The possibilities are limitless. Every day is a new day. There will always be more to do and more to be seen in the future. Nothing is ever complete. So yes, it’s true, Christian Audigier continues to be at the forefront of the fashion world, he’s spotted on the catwalk wowing the crowds, he’s seen at every A-List party and he’s on the cover of magazines worldwide. Whether you refer to him as the “King of Fashion”, the “King of Jeans” or even a “Craftsman of the Pop Culture” one thing remains true above it all, he is first Christian Audigier, the family man… everything else follows and there is always more to be done.

OPA! Time to Dance at the Movies

By Pamela Spyrs

Cinedigm, the global leader in digital cinema, in association with Ullman Family Film Productions, is the driving force behind the October 16th release of OPA!. The film’s release this month comes four years after its 2005 filming. Directed by Udayan Prasad, OPA! stars Matthew Modine, Agni Scott, Alki David and Richard Griffiths. “The most complicated thing about the motion picture industry today is distribution,” says Modine, “I am thrilled Cinedigm picked up OPA! which has made it possible for this delightful film to be seen and enjoyed.”

While many assume a movie premiere consists of the red carpet being filled with a star-studded array of celebrities, Cinedigm decided to do things a bit differently for the special premiere presentation of OPA! that took place on October 5th. Yes Modine, Scott and David, amongst other celebrities, were on the red carpet. However, the film wasn’t only being played at MANN CHINESE in Hollywood, CA. Cinedigm offered a simulcast screening of the film in 50 cities across the country. This LIVE event, which utilized CineLive™ technology, gave audience members a sneak preview of the film. Coupled with that was a chance to participate in a LIVE in-theater Q & A with Matthew Modine, his co-stars, Agni Scott and Alki David, along with moderator French Stewart, who all appeared via satellite from the top of MADAME TUSSAUD’S HOLLYWOOD. While this was a night dedicated to celebrating the release of OPA!, it also was a night to raise awareness for Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the global leader of the breast cancer awareness movement.

OPA! is a film sure to be enjoyed by all who see it. This enchanting love story is heart capturing and awakens the spirit to realize the search for love sometimes comes when it’s least expected. The film leads you to the magical Greek island of Patmos where inhabitants have lived, danced and celebrated life for thousands of years. Something drastically changes the atmosphere on this beautiful island when a straight-laced, high-tech archaeologist, ERIC (Matthew Modine) arrives. Though Eric came to the island in search of a mystical relic, he finds himself swept into a picture perfect scene of romance. The story takes a turn when his satellite-guided equipment reveals that his most important find could very well be buried under the taverna owned by the woman who has captured his heart, KATERINA (Agni Scott). Will this modern day treasure hunt overshadow Eric’s newfound love for Katerina? Can the vivacious Katerina forgive this American man who has come and shown her so much passion? Does SPIROS (Alki David), the out spoken man who runs the taverna intervene and create havoc? It’s all revealed, as the story ends with a unique twist

HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

15

that makes one believe maybe fairy tales do come true.

“The making of OPA! has truly been one of the most wonderful experiences I have had the pleasure to be part of,” shared Matthew Modine, “and without doubt filming on a beautiful island in Greece made it all the more enjoyable.” “Being Greek made it such a fantastic experience. For me it’s about the process and I always make a point to enjoy the process,” Alki David stated, “it worked well because we were in paradise and it all flowed nicely.” “This location was a dream. Absolutely! Patmos is the most beautiful island I have ever been too,” exclaimed Agni Scott.

BOOM BOOM

SATELLITES

“KICK IT OUT” IN THE USA

By Pamela Spyrs

Japan’s hottest Electronic/Rock band, BOOM BOOM SATELLITES, has crossed the Pacific Ocean to KICK IT OUT in the USA. This electrifying band has teamed up with top selling Rap Artist, FLO-RIDA and TV sensation Tahj Mowry to release a sound sensation that fuses three genres of music: Rap, Techno and Rock. “KICK IT OUT” is an expression of freedom to ROCK IT at all levels. It’s a song that encourages recording artists to break down barriers and bring music together of any kind. Bassist/programmer, Masayuki Nakano and guitarist/vocalist, Michiyuki Kawashima, who formed BOOM BOOM SATELLITES, have been making music together since the early 1990’s. Through this mutual collaboration they have embraced the electronic and rock elements of music to create a sound that is unlike any other. This has brought them high profile recognition and they are now considered to be amongst the most distinguished music producers in Japan. Their sound is unique and stands alone from other artists, which continues to get them recognized in the US market. Both Nakano and Kawashima grew up in small towns of Japan, having little connection to the outside world. Although they lived far from one another, they each were being lead on parallels paths when it came to their love of music. While listening to music on the radio lying on the fields in Northern Japan, Kawashima would spend his time as a young boy day-dreaming of becoming a rock star. Later, at the age of 16, he purchased a base guitar and formed a small band. Many miles away in a town just outside of Tokyo, Nakano too was gaining a passion for music. At the early age of 4, his father introduced

22

HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

him to the sound of music. As his interest in music grew he would find himself listening to his father’s record collection for hours upon hours. Although it wasn’t until later in their lives these two would meet, their curiosity and dreams of creating a music sensation remained at the forefront throughout their childhood. Nakano and Kawashima paths intercepted while attending a university in Tokyo. It was there they discovered the strong passion they had for music as they would experiment with instruments and electronic equipment they had within their midst. When asked what has been the band’s inspiration and how have they become so highly recognized, both Nakano and Kawashima confirmed they have ultimately influenced one another. It is without doubt the inspiration to create this eclectic sound was birthed by the coming together of these two talented guys who are now rising to high levels of stardom. Nakano stated, “English punk and new wave bands such as, The Cure, New Order and David Bowie, amongst others, have most influenced our music”. This magnetic band may have roots in Japan but they’re undoubtedly bound for worldwide stardom.

They’ve now hit the USA by storm and there’s no stopping them. They first hit Europe in 1997 when they played in numerous music festivals and later debuted their album, “Out Loud”. From there BBS toured with a number of international acts, including Fatboy Slim in 1997, Underworld in 1998, and Moby during a three-month tour of the US in 1999. Clearly BBS are no strangers to the US. In Japan their concerts sell out within 20 minutes of tickets being released for sale. BBS has performed for audiences as large as 30,000 fans. Their hopes are to create that same phenomenon in the

US. They plan to perform in numerous US cities and it’s worldwide from there. Their Electro-Pop-Rock sound has opened up numerous doors, including having multiple songs placed on the PlayStation 3 Game Station “Lost Memories”. They have also produced songs for Oliver Stone’s and Luc Besson’s film YAMAKASHI. BBS is making a statement in the US and beyond with the spirit and soul they put into their music, lyrics and energy. This is how they believe they can directly connect and communicate with their

audiences. This dynamic duo has brought numerous forms of music together as way to express music that has been unknown until now. It’s about uniting sounds of all kinds, which is what the KICK IT OUT movement is all about. “Our music is a mix of our spirit and soul,” says Kawashima, “it comes out when we are writing lyrics such as: ‘light comes with the darkness’, ‘you are newborn after the destruction’, ‘rain follows everyone’.” Nakano adds, “these words are our belief and it is the message we want to express to our fans.”

story of the year

by Natalie Perez

1. You’ve guys been around for 14 yrs anything planned for the 15 yr mark come 2010? Dan: Most definitely we have a new record coming out. 2. Will we be seeing you on Jimmy Kimmel Live anytime soon? Dan: Hopefully have to have them ask us we did that back in the day, played Jimmy Kimmel, Carson Daily, etc. 3. I first got into you guys in 2004, when you were a part of the Nintendo Fusion Tour and was an extra in your music video for “Anthem Of Our Dying Day,” looking back on when you first entered the music scene up to this point, how does that make you feel? Dan: Think weíve matured a lot.

24

While doing their on again/off again routine, St. Louis rockers Story of the Year or SOTY recently stopped by Long Beach to pay their respects to a local charity event but before hitting the streets they decided to do what they do best and thatís playing music. Dan, Ryan, Phillip, Adam and Josh gave me the opportunity of a lifetime when I got word that I’d be interviewing the entire act before they were due to meet up with their fans for a quick signing session - not to mention their headlining performance for later on that same night. The band spoke to me about what theyíve currently been up too and what to expect from them come the New Year.

4. What I’ve noticed about Story of the Year is that you play a handful of shows, in your hometown and then you come out to California, why the on/off routine? Dan: Why not? Weíre always around when weíre at home and whenever California wants us we come out and play. 5. When will we be seeing the new album? Dan: Early to mid next year, January-February. 6. In my opinion after getting into you guys in 04, I had also gotten into this other rock act known as Three Days Grace, would you consider going on tour with them, I think that’d make a great line-up. Dan: I think the producer that did our last albums worked with them on their first one.

Ryan: Itís hard to keep up with all the latest trends.

Phillip: But I donít know if our fans would get along with their fans.

Adam: Thatís a hard question to answer.

Dan: Weíll just see what can possibly be set up.

HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

7. Out of all the music videos and albums to date, which is your absolute favorite and why? Dan: Probably Until The Day I Die and our new album. Josh: Sidewalks *Laughs* and of course our new album. Phillip: Take Me Back, and the new album. Adam: The Antidote and the new album thatís not out yet. Ryan: Take Me Back, and the new album. 8. You guys did a cover of Metallia’s “Enter Sandman” would you ever consider recording it, and what other cover tunes would you want to include?

so to go and record it ñ itís just not going to sound as good. We might record it on another live album probably thatíd be cool. 9. What are your upcoming plans for the rest of 2009 into 2010? Dan: Go out on tour in November/December with The Devil Wears Prada, and then basically tour all of next year when and after the new album comes out. 10. Anything else you’d like to add? Dan: Go pick up the new album when it comes out. Josh: yeah definitely go get it once itís been dropped. Adam: Go get the new album when it comes out.

Adam: I want too!

Ryan: Pick it up!

Dan: Its one of those songs that sounds good the way it is, because when we play it live itís our own style

Phillip: Look for the new album come the New Year!

By Claudia Gallardo Home. It is a short but powerful word. Some say that home is where the heart is; others say that our true home exists within ourselves. This may not sound too far from reality, being that finding and creating a home is something that touches the core of most people. It is not just about finding a place with walls and a roof, it is about finding the right combination of style, charm, quality and sophistication, as well as knowing that these characteristics are true to who you are and the lifestyle you lead.

Conveying the message of what type of home you are looking for can prove to be a difficult task—when you are in the wrong hands. There are many nuances that cannot be explained based solely in price range or location, and sometimes there are not enough words or adjectives to describe what exactly that you are looking for. Southern California continues to showcase cuttingedge home design with homes pushing the limits for innovation and green design, but also offering Hollywood-era

glamour and classic construction with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. The options are boundless when you are looking for a new place to call home or for just a little piece of the action in Los Angeles. Where do you start? You can always call a real estate agent—or you can call Nicole. A San Francisco native, Nicole Lindler is no stranger to the Southern California scene. Having attended USC where she obtained a BS in Business Marketing, she made Los Angeles her permanent

home. However, not before a search of her own, which took her to live in Honk Kong, Paris and Costa Rica. Nicole found Los Angeles to have the perfect combination of elements to make it the perfect place to live. Her experience of living in such a dynamic city guided her interest toward helping people in a very unique way.

Although she is not a mind reader, she could be mistaken for one. Nicole's ability is having the eye to match a particular client to a type of lifestyle and home. This also works in reverse by positioning for sale properties in key market places. New Era Debt Solutions Part 3.

by Jenny Werth

I’m sitting at my computer. It’s 5:38 a.m. A time most responsible 9 to 5ers are asleep, dreaming of their next glorious paycheck. Actually, since this is the land of ‘the skinny,’ people with jobs are just as likely to be at the gym with their trainer, or with their boot-camp group hiking up Runyon Canyon... you know what I mean. But soon enough, Los Angeles will wake up to another sunny day, and the ‘lucky ones’ with pretty plastic credit cards will begin swiping their way through every coffee shop and restaurant in town. Clearly, there are still plenty of people in this economy who do still have fabulous jobs and- Drum Roll Pleasecredit! Aaww… how I long to place one of my former reliable best friends (aka: credit cards), securely into that tight plastic pocket of a black check holder. But, those days are long gone and everyone who has been following my ‘problemo’ with the credit card companies already knows about my real life MASSIVE debt issue that New Era Debt Company has quite literally taken off my hands.

So, dear readers… is it really so bad to be broke and without the well-used plastic popping out of my last season’s impulsively purchased Gucci wallet? Well, I compare it to the fear those of you still employed in ‘shaky’ places feel. You slave away at the office hoping and praying that some new hire in a position beneath you (because we all know whomever was once your superior was laid off to ‘save money’ a long time ago) doesn’t come in and give you their “good-bye, I’m so sorry speech” feel. I’d like to think it’s about even. But then again, I’m the one awake at this hideous time in the morning for NO reason other than I can’t sleep. And this is becoming a weekly theme in my broke life. So why am I sitting up at this stupid hour, yet again, if I have absolutely nowhere to go? Why…? New Era and many people in its wonderful program know why. It’s simple really. My life has been turned upside down thanks to my former ‘credit card happy life-style’ and despite all the Tylenol PM, I can’t sleep. Need I say more? I know, “poor me.” I should have thought more about the consequences when I was substituting shopping as therapy, but I didn’t, and now I’m feeling sorry for myself. I MISS MY SHOPPING TO FEEL BETTER DAYS!! Where has my therapy gone?! So rapidly, the predominant words in my life went from ‘approved’ to ‘declined.’ Now it’s, new shoes, declined! New sexy dress, declined! Aaahhh…. I am beginning to feel this word ‘declined’ is like a personal rejection. So I just keep reminding myself that New Era Debt Solutions has already begun to find the solution to carve my path out of debt. That’s right! I am already about to settle my first credit card mess with Bank of America! It’s unbelievable, its only been about four months

since I’ve slid that old friend of mine through a credit card machine. I owe them roughly $30,000, but thanks to the efforts of New Era, I am now settling my ENTIRE debt owed to them for approximately $8000. That’s only 25 percent of the debt owed! I know, it sounds almost too good to be true, but this is the reality folks. I am paying B of A off in four monthly payments of about $2000 each. Apparently each credit card settlement situation is unique, so, it’s not possible for New Era to know how the rest of my debt settlements will work out, but so far, so good! For the next four months I will be paying B of A the settlement money directly instead of making the normal payments into my Note World trust account set up by New Era Debt Solutions. Good ol’ William over at New Era has incredible patience and never tires with explanations of how things work or in resending me emails time and again. He also speaks in a way non-financial people (such as myself) can understand. And if I ever feel like I am not totally sure of what he’s explaining, he is happy to explain it again void of any jargon. He acts as my personal debt counselor and has walked me through the entire process of how I’m going to deal with Bank of America directly. For example, I will be paying them a bit more than I would normally put into my Note World trust account to settle this debt. But, as William explained, often times the first “settlement offer” a credit card gives you is normally the best and lowest one. So, it is beneficial for you to take the offer (if possible) and settle the debt rather than wait for a second “offer” which will most likely be for a higher amount. Within no time, I’ll be one credit card debt down and only three to go! Who knew it could be so easy to get out of

the debt that keeps our phones ringing with calls from creditors all day? It is lucky New Era Debt Solutions is out there to help the thousands of us who are caught up in the debt rut. They explained how the whole process of alleviating my terrible debt would work, and so far, it’s been right on the ‘money,’ (albeit, not mine). So far, the only surprise has been how quickly I was able to settle my ridiculous Bank of America debt, not to mention how little they are willing to accept. But, New Era can only do so much. They are an honorable company that does what they say…. but I doubt they have massage therapy rooms that smell like jasmine inside their headquarters. They also don’t have mental therapists on hand, although I’m sure they’ve referred out to quite a handful. My point is they cannot alleviate this steady pain I’ve developed in my neck and shoulders ever since I accepted I was in $75,000 of obnoxious, mind-blowing debt. Nor can they take away this new emotion I feel called shame. I sneak around my condo complex trying my hardest to avoid neighbors, especially those who know my big secret. I owe my HOA over $8000. A lien against my condo will most likely be in place by the time this is published. I’ve tried to come to some kind of agreement with the HOA management for an agreeable ‘payment plan,’ but it seems the HOA simply won’t budge. I guess they think I have money stashed away somewhere since I still have a car in the garage. Since getting into extreme debt, I’ve learned some things that I always knew anyways, but found easier to ignore. I’ve learned that too many people look more at your wallets than at your eyes. I’ve learned that greed truly does dominate our society. I’ve learned that I don’t like who many people become when they

find out you are in hard times. And inside of me, I feel this ache that I will never again ‘fit into this society,’ which confuses me, because it’s one I’ve never wanted to belong to anyway. Alas, it’s so, so much more than just the debt in the end, isn’t it? I believe it’s this way for most of us who fall into the ‘victim-ofthe-times-group.’ Although I’m not defending myself by claiming I’m a simple victim. I chose to spend like crazy and rack up all this debt, I just took for granted that I’d be able to keep paying it off. That is 100-percent my fault. But, again, I am resolute that the credit card companies have brought much of the debt upon themselves by hiking up interest rates to sickening rates. Their gluttony turned many former customers into current debtors. And the credit

card companies will never, ever learn because they have no heart. I know I sound depressed. And I am. I think of all these kinds of ‘profound’ things when I can’t sleep while enviously eyeing the tangled bed. There’s nothing I have to hide or pretend. It’s not easy dealing with this mess. But, New Era does make the experience tolerable because they remind you that there is an end to your dance with debt. One day the twists and twirls of the money game will stop. My debt catastrophe, along with the insistent, harassing creditors who remind me of it constantly, put me through a minitantrum daily. So, I cannot imagine where I’d be without New Era helping me resolve my debt debacle. In fact, I don’t want to even think where I’d be without them. Having New Era Debt Solutions on my side makes it a situation I can endure. It’s the difference between standing alone
