A LETTER FROM

THE EDITOR

Dear Readers, Our September Issue has been a labor of love for everyone here at HW Magazine, because it launches our HW Classic Hollywood Series. It was important to create a series that pays homage to the golden era of Hollywood, and the stars who laid the foundation and set the standard for today’s celebrities. A project like this is an education for anyone, and every day you’ll discover diamonds and gems of history – for example: how many people know that Marilyn Monroe helped to promote Ella Fitzgerald’s career. Ella was having a hard time getting the press to come to her events. Marilyn Monroe was already a fan of Ella, so when she heard about this she told the press if they wanted to interview her they could find her every night at a week-long engagement that Ella was performing. The two be came great friends – a beautiful story of friendship and harmony that should be shared. This edition of HWM introduces the first Diamond of our Classic Hollywood Series – the incredibly talented Carmelita, who we’re honored to feature on our Cover. Her highly anticipated performance in the “Vintage Music Legends Show” is an event you do not want to miss. The show is a musical tribute to Herb Jeffries, Elaine Stritch, Duke Ellington and the great Ella Fitzgerald. Our Feature Story on Carmelita and the creation of this musical tribute show is an amazing journey back to the Golden Age of Entertainment. With that said, we at HWM have always been grateful for your support, and when we created this new Classic Hollywood Series we had many sponsors who were eager to show their support. We’ve included all the sponsors of our Classic Hollywood Series in this issue, because without them this series would not have been possible. If you love this series as much as we do, we hope you’ll take a moment to read about the sponsors who brought it to you. Finally, we’d like to welcome back the extremely popular LA THEATRE BEAT by Steve Zall and Sid Fish to Hollywood Weekly Magazine.

Selected as one of the 150 most beautiful people for a book, Carol Connors , nominated for 5 Emmys, 1 Grammy, 2 Golden Globe Awards , 2 time Oscar nominated singer songwriter is "inimitable", simply irreplaceable and one of a kind. She is an integral part of the Hollywood, Beverly Hills scene and definitely at the top of the ladder. From bobby socks to Beverly Hills, Carol was transformed from an aspiring teenager formerly known as Annette Kleinbard, born of modest means to immigrant Polish/ Jewish parents. Songwriter Phil Spector wrote for her voice ,"To Know Him is to Love Him," which she sang

as lead singer of the "Teddy Bears" and recorded with Marshall Leib and Spector. This recording became possible after much pleading for $10 from her family. It was also a good choice because the song became number 1 on the charts for 3 weeks and stayed on the top 10 for 11 weeks. At age 16 her rise to stardom had begun. Later the King himself, Elvis Presley who had a recording about a Teddy Bear discovered Carol , became smitten and , became her first love and Teddy bear. Carol Connors lives the lifestyle of the " Rich and Famous" and also penned a song , "Champagne Wishes & Caviar Dreams" sung by Dionne Warwick for Robin Leach's "Rich and Famous" t.v. show. . Super hit , "Gonna Fly Now" for Sylvester Stallone's "Rocky" which she cowrote with Bill Conti and Ayn Robbins has transported her on the magic carpet to her Beverly Hills hideaway which she says "Rocky" built, can only be reached around the curves , and gulches perched on a hilltop. From there she looks out into the canyon, surrounded with her two Abyssinian golden colored furry friends named *NLYRICS and the most recent addition, Mewsiktoo?deKatzanova , both curious and perky. Her baby grand digital Kawai, which also doubles as a recording studio permits her to continue to create more hit songs such as "With You I'm Born Again", dedicated to her love affair with Robert Culp, which became a hit for Billy Preston and Syreeta Wright. Selling millions, Johnny Mathis, Mariah Carey and John Legend have also covered this hit. She has written "Only the Music, Only My Song" which aspiring singer/ songwriter Carmelita performed at one of her engagements at the Gate in Encino. Carol has performed the song at special occasions receiving standing ovations leaving few with a dry eye.

Her recent musical venture is writing the theme for an upcoming multi-million documentary ,"Angels in the Sky", about the birth of the Israel and Israeli Air Force. We continue to watch CC as she prefers to be called by her friends, and enjoy her pin up emails, her unlimited song writing with over 200 to her credit, her zest for life, her ever lasting beauty which she represents for Clientele, and a little zaniness which makes her the one and the only one of a kind. She has invented her own language of Carolisms and continues to bake Auntie Carol's CCCC's chocolate chip chippers (cookies) hoping that Elvis will drop by one day.

Her talent has taken her to many platitudes, conducting a 117 piece orchestra to the theme of Rocky and America the Beautiful at Kennedy Center last year to raise money for the Wounded Warriors, wearing matching ensembles usually with the themes of notes, mermaids, or dolphins, attending glamorous and exciting gatherings, hobnobbing in Palm Springs where her Star is on the Walk of Fame, awaiting her Star in Hollywood, traveling locally and abroad, and supporting special causes. Written by Bill Cain, and directed by Mike Peebler, it runs September 5 through October 4 at the Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga. For tickets call 310-455-3723 or visit www.theatricum.com.

ART

John Felix, Johnny Romeo 1149 S Robertson Blvd, Beverly Hills, CA. 90035 WWW.PETRAGALLERIE.COM rtist John Felix is a man completely nourished by art. Both his parents were creative so John grew up surrounded by art – this childhood love carried through to adulthood. Through one of the magical wonders of synchronicity he found the embodiment of this artistic love in his wife, Petra. They made each other stronger artists and always dreamed of opening their own gallery. In fact, all of their friends, who were the first art collectors of their work, agreed that John and Petra should exhibit their work in their own gallery. Their marriage created a beautiful energy, and, as you know, energy cannot be destroyed, only transferred into another form. When Petra passed away in 2010, the loving energy John shared with her was transferred into the Petra Gallerie, founded that very same year. Located at 1149 S. Robertson Blvd., the Petra Gallerie & Boutique is a building composed of hope, dreams and love.

The Petra Gallerie website describes Johnny’s work as “Neo-Expressionist Pop art – an exhilarating, colorful collision of Rock n’ Roll swagger, comic book aesthetics, Neo-Expressionism, Grindhouse intensity and street art. GQ Magazine Australia described Johnny’s art as “Part punk, part Pop,” and John Felix is about to turn Petra Gallerie into a modern-day “Andy Warhol Factory” by printing Johnny’s incredible designs on everything from t-shirts to skateboard tops. There is a huge demand for the art of Johhny Romeo right now; he’s had sell-out exhibitions across Sydney, Perth, the Gold Coast, Alice Springs, Darwin and New Zealand, and, of course, New York and Los Angeles. In addition to GQ Magazine Australia Johnny’s art has also been in Vogue, the Australian Art Review and the Australian Art Collector.

visit to PetraGallerie.com is an enjoyable excursion if you’re a lover of art, because all of the artists John Felix welcomes into his gallery, like Johnny Romeo, as are giants in their unique fields, and true creative visionaries. John Felix, himself, who’s illustrations can best be described as Frank Miller’s “Sin City” in the old west, has created a best-selling t-shirt in his gallery’s boutique: “Cowborg.” The Petra Boutique also sells books, jewelry and reproductions, as well as clothes.
