AT THE HELM WITH

By Natalia Langsdale Photos Guillaume Plisson

ESPEN ØINO

A charismatic adventurer whose masterpieces masterfully marry design, aesthetics, engineering and space planning in some of the world’s most spectacular yachts cruising the seven seas today. Espen Øino delves into his fascinating world tinged with continual inspiration from sometimes the least expected sources and with a refined eye for detail stemming from simplicity. Find out what really ticks this man’s boxes and how his finest hour has yet to come.

Who is Espen Øino? A simple traveling draftsman who likes anything that floats and not just yachts. Fishing boats, container ships, cruise ships, paddle boards, kayaks, whatever you can mess around with in the water. Where does your inspiration come from? Buildings, commercial ships, war ships, cars, topography, nature, interesting

parts of the world, photography, people, fashion even sometimes. I think I am a very observant person who always looks and follows what is going on around me. Inspiration is everywhere. Lately with social media there is so much visual information coming in everyday. For me with a very packed schedule, it allows me to constantly be in the know.

Did you always know you wanted to be a boat designer? Ever since I can remember. When I was 4 years old or so I did not know what a yacht was but I certainly knew what a boat was! I come from Norway where we are surrounded by water. My whole life was boats and water from an early age.

# 8 ONLYMAGAZINE I Travel Art & Lifestyle 27

ONLYYACHT From natural beauty and ‘kos’ of Norway to high-rising buildings – why Monaco? Monaco is a great centre for our activities in yachting and boating. It is becoming even more so by the day so that was important for me. I was attracted to the diversity of the people living and working here. It is very cosmopolitan. Since I was a kid I always wanted to go abroad and study, which I did. I have always liked to hang out with people from all parts of the world so to me Monaco is the perfect fit for this. I enjoy Monaco, which has been my home for 11 years now. What factors influence your designs beyond a client’s request? Every design is specific, every boat is different. When you start designing, it is a journey that you do with somebody and that somebody is the client. Their input is fundamental to the end result. The influences can be as varied as the

clients themselves who in turn can be inspired by many things. Most designers are very observant people and as a result you somehow always look at things that you remember and that pop up at the right time as inspiration. Your best design to date? I hope it is yet to come! One would always like to think that the last boat was always the best and that the next one will be better. Your most challenging design to date? Probably 71m SKAT because of the super engaged client who set down some basic rules. The brief was not to deform material from its original shape and geometry, like flat plates of steel and aluminium. Except for the hull, which for obvious reasons has complex shapes to it, the rest of the boat had flat surfaces. It was quite challenging to make it look good and make it work.

28 ONLYMAGAZINE I Travel Art & Lifestyle # 8

Is there something that you have always wanted to do in design but never got around to? Cruise ships or another type of ship. We are now getting into smaller production boats, which is very interesting and is a whole different world. That relates to nautical but on non nautical terms, perhaps ski boots! How do your design ambitions change with the many yachts that you have worked on? The fundamental ambition is to try to respond to the owners requests to make them fully satisfied and where you do your best to make sure that expectations are met. We certainly have better tools today to visualise the project before it is built than when I first started. This minimises the risk of not meeting expectations. I still like to think that I am at the beginning of my career but we all change with time as does our outlook

GRAB FACTS ABOUT ESPEN ØINO on life. Today we try to be more environmentally friendly than we were but that is just normal, it is the world we live in. Describe your involvement with 83m from VSY launched at the 2016 Monaco Yacht Show. Following on from STELLA MARIS, we were asked to design a series of larger yachts with the same ‘DNA’. Adding only 10m made the 83m yacht considerably bigger with many more features. She is more ‘masculine and manly’ yet keeps to the logical design language. I hope to see the boat come alive someday as she is one that I am very proud of. What would you want in your own super yacht if you were the client? A very informal boat, just like me, with a beach house and as much outdoor space as possible. Storage space to be optimised for all sorts of tenders and toys like a sea kayak, paddle boards, sailing dinghies and jet-skis that allow to explore rivers and coast lines. A tender to bring skiing equipment ashore and get people on board in a protected way. Definitely to have a helicopter on board (if I could afford one!) and a ski room. Design-wise the boat would look a bit enigmatic and mysterious. A bit like a work boat, a bit rugged.

How do you perceive the future of yacht design? With all the new blood there are a lot of very interesting designs. The fact that there are modelling and rendering tools readily available to anyone means that it is much easier to release something online, which looks all engineered and ready to build but which most of the time is not the case. A client may say, I want it that way but reality is different. Sure, you need to have fantasy and imagination but it needs to be matched with engineering skills. The laws of physics will always apply. It is important that young designers have a realistic approach and have had a chance to study a boat or worked on one, to understand the concept from a naval architects point of view. Who would be your dream client? Someone who would give me a free hand yet be super engaged to the requirements and let me get on with it. Not for it to be my boat but that it would be a collaboration with someone who is a “cool dude” like Lapo Elkann for example. Could be fun as I knew and worked with his grandfather a bit and it was very inspirational. Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos perhaps also who were crazy enough to have done what they did.

•N orwegian-born, French and Scottish-educated • Completed a degree in naval architecture and offshore engineering at Glasgow’s Strathclyde University • Began professional career at the design studio of Martin Francis • Set up his own today Monaco-based studio, Espen Øino International S.A.R.L. (EOI) in 1994 • Largest yacht project to date is 156m Dilbar • An average of at least three to four 63 meter + yachts per year • Currently has 46+ super yachts delivered to his name worldwide not counting tenders

Now more than ever, time is money. Business aviation has throughout the years become a necessary tool that assists private and corporate users alike in making efficient use of their precious professional and leisure time. Private aviation is a buoyant market that has attracted many players, and turning to true professionals for efficient and cost-effective sales and acquisitions is a wise step to take.

Take off with your private jet from Nice or fly directly with your helicopter from Monaco Heliport with the right helicopter provided by Avinco.

s with most significant buying decisions, be it purchasing a luxury commodity such as a yacht or property, being accompanied by a specialist firm is essential to ensure that no stone is left unturned. One such specialist available to help navigate the way through the administrative complexities of both helicopter and business jet acquisition is Monaco-based Avinco. Made up of an international team of experts, this specialist firm has since 2003 excelled in advising its international clientele on a wide spectrum of turnkey solutions from its offices in Monaco, New York, Singapore and Dublin. From helicopter purchase or sale management, significant corporate deals with Boeing and Airbus, to sourcing and selling private jets, as one of the most active players in

moving commercial airlines, Avinco undoubtedly lives and breathes the A-Z of this high-flying industry. Avinco CEO and founder, François Gautier shares his key advice when considering aircraft acquisition. NEW VS PRE-OWNED AIRCRAFT PURCHASE - WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES FOR BOTH? Pre-owned aircraft: buyers avoid lengthy lead-times from manufacturers which can take up to several years. There is also clear added value for money spent. The aircraft can be customised to the new owner’s tastes and requirements. New aircraft: seek advice from a specialist to help establish an ownership strategy and select the aircraft best suited to your needs. By doing so the firm is in a stronger position to negotiate on the behalf of the buyer.

A

ONLYJET TOP 5 TIPS WHEN PURCHASING AN AIRCRAFT 1. Identify the use – lifestyle, frequency, passengers, destinations etc. 2. Do not be geographically limited in the search 3. Be open-minded about the choice of aircraft model 4. Always take on highly qualified experts to carry out technical inspections 5. Use a specialist firm for a smooth sale or acquisition process IS BIGGER NECESSARILY BETTER? A larger aircraft usually means more

range, more comfort and/or more passengers. However in the case of a helicopter size is not everything, performance is. Range is of course critical and a larger cabin may mean more comfort, but what one must always consider in anticipation of one’s type of use, is take-off and pay load performance. WHAT IS THE BEST AIRCRAFT TO CONSIDER IF YOU ARE MONACOBASED? Helicopters are a perfect choice for the Principality. The aircraft range will enable you to reach favourite hideaway and holiday spots such

as Courchevel, St Tropez, Geneva or Portofino. To fly further afield, Nice Airport allows you to catch a private or commercial plane within the matter of just a few minutes by helicopter. HELICOPTERS ON SUPER YACHTS - WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES Helicopters give you direct access to and from your yacht wherever it is moored, with the added value of speed, security and discretion. Takeoff performance is obviously critical as is the actual look of a helicopter proudly sitting on a yacht. www.avinco.net

Located in the 1st arrondissement in Paris, Le Roch Hotel & Spa –which opened in summer 2016– is the first hospitality project by Sarah Lavoine. The French interior designer has three concept stores in the city. Lavoine uses her colour palette with virtuosity to structure space and redefines a new lifestyle à la française.

Sarah Lavoine’s new hospitality and commercial projects are an ode to colour, and offer a glimpse into her world.

According to one of France’s bestknown interior designers, there are no rules for giving life to a space. One should only aim to create unique atmospheres filled with warmth and energy. “I consider every project I do as a new experience, with a new story behind it,” Sarah Lavoine says. Since 2002, she and her team have worked on one-of-a-kind public and private projects, which all reflect her timeless aesthetic. Lavoine’s pivotal approach to

designing an interior is, firstly, to look at volumes and light–to ponder what could be changed, transformed, removed or improved, and then to play around with the colour palette, an avenue for articulating and structuring the space. Style & Tradition

By Karine Monié Photos Courtesy of Réard

With 70 years of history and after being out of the market for 50 years, Réard –known as the inventor of the bikini– is back with a new beautiful collection, which combines craftsmanship, sophistication and comfort. Louis Réard was, first and foremost, an engineer. However he had a huge impact on lifestyle and fashion in the middle of the 20th century. In the thirties, Réard inherited from his mother a small boutique of swimwear/ resort wear in the 13th arrondissement in Paris. In July of 1946, he launched the first two-piece swimsuit –which he called the bikini– during a défilé at the Piscine Molitor in Paris, revealing a woman’s midriff like never before. Both inventive and bold, the bikini symbolized freedom and liberation for women of the 1940s. Since then, it has become an essential garment, worn by icons such as Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot. After years without a natural successor to helm the brand, Réard is reborn. Launched last spring (2017), its new swimwear collection pays tribute to Réard’s French heritage, conveying the brand’s passion for originality and attention to detail. In addition to the vintage newsprint bikini –a limited edition– Réard also offers a full range of one and two-piece swimsuits, towels and

hats. In 2018, other luxury lifestyle products and clothing will be available, including beachwear, bags, sandals, wraps and eyewear. Designed to make women feel and look beautiful, the new Réard Spring-Summer capsule collection of swimwear is not only contemporary and chic; it also uses the highest quality materials and techniques. Included in these is LYCRA® XTRA LIFE™, a fiber brand that provides elasticity and a long lasting fit, as well as resists degradation from chlorinated water, heat and sunscreen over 10 times more than untreated fabrics. www.reard.com

The very first Réard bikini in 1946 reflected Louis Réard’s ingenuity, personality and sense of humour. Today the brand pays homage to this moment with its own vintage newsprint bikini, part of the Réard Limited Edition collection. In 2018, Réard will launch other lifestyle products and clothing, including bags, sandals, wraps, among others.

Located on the southeast coast of the Persian Gulf, Dubai is the largest city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It has become a business hub in the region and an iconic destination to see innovative skyscrapers and enjoy luxurious hotels. Burj Khalifa is the most impressive tower in Dubai and today it is the tallest building in the world. Its design –by renowned firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP– combines local cultural influences with cutting-edge technology.

Dubai Is Shining

For the past 10 years, ultra-modern skyscrapers with innovative and bold designs have sprouted up across Dubai’s desert landscape. One of these structures, Burj Khalifa– designed by renowned architecture, interior design, engineering and urban planning firm SOM (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP)– is the tallest building in the world, standing at 828 metres with more than 160 stories. This development shows no sign of slowing: Shopping malls, residential projects, office towers and cultural centres are currently under construction everywhere. Residents representing 200 nationalities live together in a cosmopolitan and vibrant environment where anything seems possible. The city’s finance industry and the real estate sector have increased dramatically with huge projects such as the luxurious waterfront development Dubai Marina; the 800,000-squaremetre Dubai Mall, which boasts 1,200 shops; and the artificial archipelago Palm Jumeirah, which comprises many hotels and resorts. bet on arts and culture for its future. Designed by Janus Rostock of Atkins and inaugurated in August 2016, Dubai Opera is a grand theatre dedicated to the performing arts. Last March, Art Dubai and Design Days Dubai took place, reflecting the dynamism of the creative scene. The works of talented artists and designers represented by successful galleries such as The Third Line, Carbon 12 and Nakkash Gallery– among many others– were featured at the events. In addition to the contemporary attractions, Dubai pays homage to its history and traditions. Reachable by subway or a traditional Abra (boat), the Gold Souk, a traditional market, offers a wide range of jewelry, gold and precious stones in the heart of the city’s commercial business district. Adjacent to it, the Spice Souk is one of the best places to find a variety of fragrances and spices, as well as textiles and rugs. With its rich culture and history flanked by towering skyscrapers, Dubai opens the doors of another world, a world where everything goes–fast and high, always pushing the limits of present day.

Developed by Helman Hurley Charvat Peacock/ Architects, Palm Jumeirah is an artificial archipelago. A 5.4-kilometre-long monorail connects Palm Jumeirah to the mainland. Launched in November 2008, the Dubai Mall includes 1,200 shops. Designed to mimic the sail of a ship, Burj al-Arab is a luxury hotel, which accommodates 202 suites.

Seventy-one kilometres from north to south and 47 from east to west: Los Angeles is a huge metropolis, where it is almost impossible to know every nook. For that reason, asking locals for a list of must-see places is essential, especially if you are in town only a few days. Admittedly, LA is not the type of city you fall in love with at first sight. That distinction belongs to the likes of Paris, Rome or Sydney. For the past years, however, LA has experienced a cultural boom, resulting in its current fascinating energy. The film and entertainment industry continues to burgeon, while artists, galleries and museums regularly move from the East Coast to the West Coast, where the sunny and warm weather allows you to enjoy the beach all year long. Inaugurated in January after more than 10 years of hard work, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg in Germany is a new architectural landmark designed by famous firm Herzog & de Meuron.

“Too often a new cultural centre appears to cater to the privileged few,” says Herzog & de Meuron’s team. “In order to make the new philharmonic a genuinely public attraction, it is imperative to provide not only attractive architecture but also an attractive mix of urban uses.” In this context, the new 29-level complex not only houses a 2,100-seat philharmonic hall and a chamber music hall made for a capacity of 550 people, but also restaurants, bars, luxury apartments, parking facilities, a five-star hotel and a panorama terrace –freely accessible to everyone– which offers exceptional views of Hamburg and the harbour. One of Japan’s “Three Holy Mountains” (along with Mount Tate and Mount Haku), Mount Fuji was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as a Cultural Site in 2013. It has inspired artists and poets for centuries. The cherry blossom season (between March and May) is the best time to visit Japan.

Japan consists of 6,852 islands and has a population of 127 million. Within the same East Asian country in the Pacific Ocean it seems, sometimes, that there are several different worlds. In Tokyo (home to approximately 9.1 million people), skyscrapers and luxury boutiques–in the Ginza shopping area in particular–shape the urban environment. Despite the fast pace, respect is never an afterthought. Influenced by Shinto, Buddhist and Taoist traditions, Japan’s people have an affinity for serene gardens and daily expressions of love for nature. Away from the hustle and bustle of big cities, Japan is also a land of

stunning, tranquil landscapes. In Tokamachi–in the southern region of Niigata Prefecture–the Hoshitoge rice terraces are breathtaking. Located on the island of Honshu, Mount Fuji–the country’s highest mountain at over 3,700 metres–is a must-see. The cherry blossom season takes place in March and April, offering beautiful scenery all over the country. Considered the largest original castle remaining in Japan and classified as UNESCO World Heritage Site, Himeji Castle in the city of Himeji, Hyōgo, is worth the visit. Last but not least, the former capital city of Kyoto, where there are still about 300 practicing geishas,

allows travelers to dive into one of the most mysterious and fascinating aspects of Japanese culture. Wherever you go in the country, eating local, traditional food–such as sushi and ramen soups–is an integral part of the experience. Over the centuries and especially in the past decades, Japan has found the perfect formula to preserve its past and look toward the future simultaneously, blending the old with the new in a way that history and technology coexists, playing their part in the evolving identity of the country.

Located in the Pacific Ocean, Japan –an archipelago consisting of over 6,800 islands– is fascinating for its traditional culture and peaceful landscapes. However the country also has a modern side, especially in Tokyo, where technology and high-end fashion boutiques are everywhere.

Since 1988, Nyetimber has aimed to make the finest in sparkling wine–elevating its sips to rival Champagne. Taking care of a vineyard is no easy task. It requires time, dedication and talent. At the end of the 1980s, American couple Stuart and Sandy Moss planted the first vines in a land that today comprises more than 170 hectares in West Sussex and Hampshire, Southern England. In this region, which is sheltered from coastal winds, the climate and chalky soil allow for wine to achieve the perfect level of acidity, complexity and finesse. Using only the grapes from its own vineyards, Nyetimber was the first producer of English sparkling wine to exclusively grow the three celebrated grape varieties found in Champagne: pinot noir, pinot meunier and chardonnay. One hour from San Francisco, Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley make up California’s premier wine region. With a sunny, Mediterranean climate and mineral-rich soil, Northern California has all the ingredients to grow grapes and produce good wines. It has become one of America’s top places to live, in particular because of Silicon Valley’s opportunities for tech entrepreneurs and professionals who enjoy spending weekends in Napa and Sonoma valleys. Both areas –nicknamed the Twin Valleys– are home to 400 wineries and many tasting rooms, where visitors can enjoy local chardonnay, pinot, cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Every part of the region awakens the senses there. Some delicious restaurants sit among the beautiful vineyardcovered landscape, serving organic, fresh products, and sophisticated spas are designed as health and beauty sanctuaries. Since 1982, Auberge du Soleil, led by French restaurateur Claude Rouas, has recreated the ambiance of Provence in California. In Napa’s Yountville, award-winning

chef Michael Chiarello’s Bottega is the perfect spot for Italian food while Thomas Keller’s fans can choose between three options: Bouchon Bistro, the family-style Ad Hoc restaurant and The French Laundry, recipient of three Michelin stars. Surrounded by nature, luxury properties and boutique hotels offer the highest level of comfort. A member of Relais & Châteaux, Meadowood Napa Valley has its own nine-hole walking golf course, seven tennis courts, a three Michelin-star restaurant, and a spa designed by architect Howard Backen. For those who prioritize ecofriendly accommodations, Bardessono Hotel and Spa– which hosts 62 suites– is one of only three LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum-certified resorts in California. With cutting-edge wineries and farm-to-table cuisine, California’s wine country is a paradise for bon vivants, mixing rustic charm and laid-back sophistication.

THE KING Nadal - world-class tennis champion, of Clay Rafael who in 2017 won his 10 Monte-Carlo Rolex By Natalia Langsdale Photos ŠRichard Mille.

Masters and is the only man in the Open Era since April 1968 to have won a singles tournament on 10 occasions speaks to ONLY Magazine about his successes and what makes him the incredible sportsman that he is.

92 ONLYMAGAZINE I Travel Art & Lifestyle # 8

In your own words, describe Rafael Nadal. This is not easy since I normally say that I leave to others this thing of describing or giving opinions. I think I am a normal person, who plays tennis for living, who has had more success than what I ever dreamed of when I was a kid and that I am very very thankful to life in general. I work hard and enjoy every moment of the competition.

at 8/9 am, have a light breakfast with bread and olive oil, go warm up at the courts and then get ready for the match. After the match and the work with press, TV, sponsors, etc, I go out for dinner. It all changes if I am not playing and if I am on holidays in Mallorca, at home, or on my boat. Then I have a normal life, including golf, friends, boat, and other leisure activities.

Which tennis player inspired you when you were younger? None really. I did my own thing and looked at the people close to me like my uncle Toni and my uncle Miguel Angel who was a successful football player (played for FC Barcelona, Spanish National Team, RDC Mallorca), and obviously my father. If I have to choose one player, that would probably have to be Carlos Moya who was close to me and #1 in the World at the time when I started playing.

What one accessory can you not walk out of the house without? I always wear my Richard Mille watch. As of today it is the RM027 Tourbillon Rafael Nadal, however there is news about a new one coming soon. It is another amazing piece of art from my friend Richard!

What are your morning rituals? It all depends on the time of the season or the year. Also if I am in competition or not. If I am playing a tournament like Monte-Carlo and I play that same day I would normally wake up

What is the most memorable match you have ever played? I have had the luck and fortune to win important matches. How can I forget my first Monte-Carlo, and my last this year? Or the final at Wimbledon in 2008 against Roger Federer. Or my first Grand Slam title in Paris, at Roland Garros. My first win on Spanish soil, in Barcelona, or in Madrid the capital of

As an ambassador for the eponymous brand of luxury Swiss watches, Richard Mille, Rafael Nadal always wears his Richard Mille watch. my country, Spain. I have many great memories. What is your favourite tournament and why? I couldn’t point out one just like that. Monte-Carlo is special, Roland Garros probably the most important in my career, Wimbledon the changing point, the US Open where I completed the Grand Slam (winning all four majors). Not easy to just pick and choose one. If you weren’t a world pro tennis player, what would you be? I don’t really know and I have been asked many times. I guess I would have tried to become a football player. I love sports and I was playing football when I was younger. I wasn’t bad at all but I am glad I chose tennis.

94 ONLYMAGAZINE I Travel Art & Lifestyle # 8

How do you see the future of tennis after the era of Nadal, Federer and Djokovic? The young players have to step up and I am sure they will. Tennis is a sport that has always been on the rise. There are great young players but now they need to win and be more consistent. What is the key in building future great players? There are many but one is inevitable: Work. You need to work hard, work with humility, try to learn from every moment and always try to do your best. There are good places to learn and to improve, but as in life, the best place is the battle field, the workplace. What inspired you to launch the Rafael Nadal Academy by Movistar? I always wanted to have a place where I could teach, show the values and teach with the know how that me and my team have been working on for so many years. That together with looking

at the future. The opportunity came and together with my team I believe we have put together something good for the future of many young tennis players. Have you already thought about what you will do when you retire from your professional tennis career? I am still focused on my career and the years to come as a tennis player. The Academy is something I am following already and will definitely dedicate more time to it in the future as well as my foundation. About being a coach, I don’t think so but you know how it is, never say never... If you could have one gigantic billboard anywhere with anything on it, what would it say? Thank you life. When you think of the word ‘successful’, who’s the first person who comes to mind and why? Many people that you don’t know, that

every day do something special for all of us. What do you love about the South of France? I love Monte-Carlo and love the South of France. I have been many times here and always discover amazing new places ( for me). This year for instance I had the opportunity to visit St Paul de Vence. Really an amazing place. I also made a private trip at the end of 2016 and had the chance to discover it with my girlfriend by car. Cannes, Antibes, Nice, St Tropez on a boat a few years back. And everyone knows how special Monaco is, particularly for me. What is your favourite food? Do you cook? If so what is your signature dish? I love fish and my favourite fish is Saint Pierre. I cook it also sometimes at home. I also like seafood, sushi, sashimi, eel, rice... Many things. But especially if its comes from the sea, which I love.

MISSION POSSIBLE:

WHEN SPORT AND BUSINESS COLLIDE FOR SUCCESS By Natalia Langsdale Photos ©mouv-up

What can sport in general, and running a marathon in particular, teach us about competition and success, talent and teamwork, values and most importantly the key to a healthy work/life balance? Jean-Victor Pastor, at the helm of the Pastor Group, takes time out from his busy schedule to delve into the similarities from his own experience as a driven sportsman, and moreover, visionary businessman having recently participated in a two-man relay Pastor team for the ‘Marathon des Alpes Maritimes Nice-Cannes’.

“In business we decide which goals help us reach our target. As in sports, business is based upon knowing your target and keeping that target in mind at all times.” Pastor is no stranger to striving for such goals, be it in the spectrum of his multiple successful businesses or in his own time when training for a marathon. His clearcut focus and months of training and dedication replicate in the way he runs his businesses and guides his teams into one common goal: success. Yet the concept of success is not achieved by one person alone or a leader. It is a team effort and is where the lines blur between running a business or running a marathon relay like Pastor did with friend and active life coach, Jean Marc Leandro back in November 2016. “Once you have in mind the target that you are aiming for, you start to align your resources so that everyone is going in the right direction.” This is exactly the ethos that Pastor strives for together with his team and it shows in the day to day operations of the entire Pastor Group. A testament of true team work stemming from years of successful collaboration in

96 ONLYMAGAZINE I Travel Art & Lifestyle # 8

the office, Pastor and Leandro joined a stronghold of over 10,000 athletes, both amateur and pro, to kick their trainerclad heels together as one to accomplish the 42.195 km itinerary that makes up the annual Marathon des Alpes Maritimes Nice-Cannes. Meandering along the coastline bordering the flush of colours of the Mediterranean sea and passing the most beautiful tourist sites of the Riviera, a true force of sportsmanship, endurance and team work came to play. The result - an impressive overall 7th position in the team category with 1hr29 for Pastor and 1h16 for Leandro. Both men have for years strived to push their own limits through active participation in various sports events and several times also the infamous New York marathon on their own and to the full. This time though, it took teamwork, dedication and coordination to together reach the end line not only for the sake of having done it, but with an impressive result at that. For many of the marathon’s participants, this particular race symbolises a chance to push beyond personal expectations. For Pastor and Leandro though, the feat was one of many in their track record of both personal and professional achievements:

PHOTOS MARATHON-PHOTOS.COM

“Building a team and working towards a common goal, be it in sport, business or life is the fundament of how we believe things should work. Business organisations have a lot to learn from high-performing sports teams. We are merely a drop in the ocean on doing this together, but hope to inspire others around us to motivate themselves and do the same all for the common goal of winning. But winning together not alone,” says Pastor. Same as in any team sport, the same methodology can be applied in a business. Most companies and people have the same challenge. We all hope for the best, but don’t spend enough time aligning our resources to achieve our goal. It goes without saying that businesses require a clear vision of where they are going in order to be successful. In other words the target

needs to be at the forefront in everyone’s mind, just like the team of a relay and on top of that, by working closely as a team be it as business colleagues or in a sports environment, you will get to spend time with one another and bond in your pursuit of a common goal. Better the relationships and improving each other’s motivation. When a team’s cohesion is good, we can always see satisfaction of those involved as a team both on a social aspect as well as in work efficiency. Such team-building sports offer higher levels of motivation, team consistency and stability. Pastor highlights how keen he is to boost his employees in the same way to engage in sport and for the same adrenaline rush you get from performing well in sport, to filter across his team in business.

Doing a sport and life in an office is not very dissimilar. If you’re the type of person who likes to follow a schedule, you’ll love training! Pastor hopes his quest for a healthy mindset will rub off his team to next year embark on an even bigger push to achieve the race: “Whether it’s running, cross-training, or taking a complete rest day. Each week, you’ll add a little more distance, so you’ll really feel like you’re making progress toward your marathon goal. With this in mind I am confident that everyone’s push for making it will naturally lead to a much more positive and goals- driven team back in the office.”

FORT LAUDERDALE

In early January, ONLYYACHT Fort Lauderdale successfully launched its luxury insurance services consisting of ONLYYACHT, ONLYYARD and ONLYJET stateside in the yachting capital of the world. Florida remains a strong owner-friendly environment for super yachts and their crew, given the excellence in service, maintenance, provisioning and mooring. Ingrid Anglin, yacht insurance agent at ONLYYACHT in Fort Lauderdale comments, "We are consistently seeing US domiciled super and mega yacht owners either increasing in size or committing to new build projects every year. First time buyers seem to have risen this year, most being incited by years of charter. It is our impression that owners, or desired owners are quite comfortable with the current and presumed market trends, enough to invest with confidence.”

98 ONLYMAGAZINE I Travel Art & Lifestyle # 8

GROWTH SPURTS How the sunshine state continues to prove itself in maintaining its stronghold and growth within the yachting industry are tell-tale signs. Take neighbouring top destination must, Cuba as an example. Roughly 75 super yachts have visited this unique and once restricted destination, some with the guidance of International SeaKeepers Society. The organisation vastly continues to grow its scientificled expeditions, drifters, educational outreach programs and yacht donations. Furthermore, it is a great organisation to assist with oceanic science exploration research costs with the use of yachts already heading out to sea. The Americas Cup that took place in Bermuda this year, and as was expected, drew an increase in provisioning and yacht maintenance to the

Florida marinas and yards dotted along the route to the races. From the beginning of May until late June there was much anticipation for continued servicing required for these splendid racing yachts. Equally on the upside, is the reemergence of business jet owners in this all-important destination. This lends itself to the increase of aircraft size, charter opportunities and firsttime buyers. As such, Fort Lauderdale continues to be one of the most popular destinations and adeptly known as the “Yachting Capital of the World.” A must for the most prestigious yachts at sea. With overall optimism reigning, the ONLYYACHT dedicated team of professionals in Fort Lauderdale are ideally positioned to offering its services for its extensive fleet of super yachts.
