ONLYYACHT, HOW THE WEST WAS WON! The Pastor Group is delighted to bring you the seventh edition of OnlyMagazine which will, once again, take you on a journey to the four corners of the earth in some 100 pages. This edition is particularly upmarket, revealing to you all the very best in yachting, private aviation, motoring, contemporary art, gastronomy and travel. This time, the emphasis of the magazine is on the USA. In fact, 2016 is a flagship year for OnlyYacht, our superyacht insurance company, as we are opening an office outside Europe for the first time. In the “old continent” of Europe, we already cover the main yachting cities, such as Monaco, London, Luxembourg, Rotterdam, Antibes and Viareggio; so it’s only logical to have a presence in Fort Lauderdale to complete the picture and offer a top-quality service in the protection of yachts and their crews. So, it’s all aboard for the new OnlyMagazine, destination pleasure and leisure. Jean-Victor Pastor Chairman of Pastor Group # 7 ONLYMAGAZINE I Travel Art & Lifestyle

Moonstone - the 90 metre concept motor yacht goes beyond conventional and enters a realm of hypnotic glamour, mirroring that of the multiple surfaces of a finely cut precious stone. This jewel is a testament to the cutting-edge union of art with innovative technology, aimed at achieving extraordinary visually emotional effects be it day, night, in our out. Designers Van Geest Design closely collaborated with an advanced lighting design company called Temeloy, to produce striking hull-side facets allowing the selfsufficient hull to literally twinkle, entrancingly linking the yacht to the sky and the sea. Its 300 individually dimmable white triangles per hull side magically reflect the water in sunlight and put on a surreal LED light display as night falls. A delight to tech-savvy enthusiasts as this artistic display is digitally programmed and can be activated by a single swipe of the finger on a mobile device. Beyond this extraordinary highlight, an infinity pool also starring dimmable lights, a hot tub, cinema, 360-degree sky deck lounge and a touchand-go helipad all offer Moonstone an incredible sense of pure indulgence. www.oceancoyacht.com

A PRODIGY OF TECHNOLOGICAL DISCIPLINE

Today, the most secretive and the world’s most advanced sail-assisted sailing yacht takes design, technology, innovation and creativity to new dimensions, according to its builders and French designer, Philippe Starck. With three colossal, distinctive unstayed masts towering 100-metres above the water, Sailing Yacht A can remarkably withstand up to 90 knots of wind.

For onlookers and considering the size of the yacht, the unusual, oval windows seem small from the outside but use a clever magnifying effect apparently rendering them gigantic when experienced from the inside. With eight decks connected with an array of elevators and free floating spiral staircases, one can only imagine what the flowing and organic living spaces of cathedral-like stature will offer. Naturally presenting unimaginable space on board, along with space for four

tenders, a submarine and a touch-and-go helipad on the bow, this prodigy introduces new techniques and technologies not only stemming from the monumental build, but also with an innovative underwater viewing pod moulded into the keel in 30cm thick glass, offering unforeseen views of the props. Sailing Yacht A is most definitely in a league of her own with a cuttingedge design professing statement ingenuity. www.nobiskrug.com

A FAMILY AFFAIR

With the highest growth rate among the world’s builders of super and megayachts, Benetti radiates with its rendition of the 63-metre monochrome masterpiece, motor yacht 11/11. As the epitome of luxury superyacht design, every aspect of the yacht’s design and interior has been a collaboration of the owner and family adding their final touches throughout. Be it the fluttering, interactive butterfly displays by Dominic Harris in the saloon, the functionality and comfort of the 15-metre sundeck, or the childproof curves at toddler height, all are examples of perfected customisation. Elegant lines and the distinctive vertical axe bow not only offer an incredible stable ride but are pleasing to the eye due to a distinct, muscular shape and the wide beam of her hull. At night, underwater lights along the waterline create a mesmerising night-time glow while in the day, light pours through the endless glass windows. Attention to detail was at the core of the brief where comfort, functionality and innovation work flawlessly together, reminiscent of the most luxurious home, just on water. www.benetti.com

ig deeper and what lies at the core of her existence, is an owner with a dream. Contrary to what one would expect from a lawyer-turned-software mogul, multiple yacht owner and Boat International Judge, Bill Duker truly amazes with dedication and above all, passion. ‘If you are going to build a boat like this, that is your dream and not compromise in any way, self-indulgence seemed like a good concept.’ THE DREAM The reality of this beautiful dream was initiated 21 years ago, together with Duker’s son who was only seven at the time. Duker tenderly recalls how they would draw the boat of their dreams at the back of the cockpit of one of his earlier yachts. Many years on and today, their most ambitious project readily stands tall in her birth waters in La Spezia (Italy). Duker proudly relates ‘I loved working with my son. I have had a lot of partners in my life but I’ve never had anyone better than him. He is my only child so we are especially close. That part of the collaboration of the shared experience was the best part.’

As a man with a plan, Duker himself claims that, ‘In order to effectuate a dream you have to have a plan to get there. It’s one thing to have a dream, but another to try to execute it. The importance to me is not to just have a thought, but to take that thought and make it real with people who can make it real.’ And make it real the golden hands of the team behind her build certainly did! Sybaris is not only a fantastic yacht but is so different from what you’ve seen before,’ Duker particularly muses over his collaboration with US-based designers PH Design, ‘These guys were not influenced by having been through the process before.’ Most yacht owners look for the enjoyment and use rather than the build. For Duker though, it was the process that was key. Every detail was a conversation with an entourage of trusted people. From the fixtures, shape of the boom or the time spent trying to figure out the best sail or the inside of the portholes and titanium ceilings. All was meticulously supervised by Duker himself.

# 7 ONLYMAGAZINE I Travel Art & Lifestyle 17

ONLYYACHT BEHIND THE DREAM Duker was not born to yachts. His father was a dock worker who worked on cargo ships but his past from there to Sybaris was not a straight line. One who knows what it is like to have set backs from time to time, Duker recalls the celebration of Sybaris at the very heart of the Perini Navi stronghold. ‘Contrary to what you might think, it was not an over the top party but a down to earth picnic. I wanted to share the real story behind me and my yacht. Not withstanding how creative I can be or how creative a seven year old is naturally, the yacht itself turned out even more fantastic than our imagination. The team deserved to hear that.’

Offering his words of wisdom, ‘The important thing is, if you can get up and if you are resilient enough to restart, you come back stronger and better.’ Thanks to Duker, Sybaris was Perini Navi’s chance to participate in a new chapter. To move them forward in a giant step in terms of the mechanics, engineering and design. To be more resilient and stronger than before in the face of adversity and to do it in a way that showed great grace and strength. BEYOND THE DREAM What is next, one wonders of the man who has dedicated years of his life making the ultimate dream come true?

‘I want to see it all. My plan this time is to have a good time and to send the yacht in the direction that I feel like with each day that comes along. I am in no hurry to get around the world but I am anxious to see something new, and to have new thoughts and have new ideas and share this experience with a bunch of people, who after a lifetime, have become special friends.’ Great words from a great man who continues to inspire others with his own passion and dedication.

EXTRACT FROM ABYSS SAGA BY BILL DUKER

Bill Duker

‘… Encouragement was coupled with their support Of course, things had changed, I needed to contort But in a new shape, I returned from the abyss Learned from my mistakes to fix what was amiss I could see better, though I was still weighed down But that only served to keep me tethered to the ground Walked slowly at first until my feet were on straight Knowing this was my race and I couldn’t be late…’

Setting the

Standard

By Natalia Langsdale Photos Imperial Yachts

Luxurious, beautiful and aspirational are just some of the superlatives often used to describe the heady world of superyachts. Yet beneath the aesthetics, the toys and the enviable lifestyle is a serious piece engineering that requires an artillery of expert minds and hands to successfully make its transition from conception to maiden voyage.

It takes years in fact for yacht’s of this kind to get to the water, with everyone from designers to craftsmen to crew involved. And so comes the need for military precision project management. This is a quality for which the full-service yacht company Imperial have become renowned for and was perfectly shown early last year in the launch of the 81.8 metre RoMEA. Now, some superyachts make more impact than others and when RoMEA emerged from award-winning yacht builder Abeking & Rasmussen, she really captured the imagination of the yachting industry. That’s no mean feat for a market that is bursting at the seams with innovation, talent and some exceptionally large budgets combined. Imperial were at the helm of

20 ONLYMAGAZINE I Travel Art & Lifestyle # 7

the project from start to finish, acting as Owner’s Representative, Construction Manager and now Yacht Manager and Central Agent for Charter. So what makes one luxury yacht stand out from another? According to Julia Stewart, Imperial Director, it is an under-standing of the owner along with the increasingly savvy charter market and the motivation to achieve exceptional results that have seen RoMEA set herself apart from the crowd; ‘Abeking & Rasmussen has a long history of exceptional superyacht builds. Their family approach and obsession over detail perfectly complimented Imperial’s style of management and supervision, allowing the Imperial team of interior and technical managers

freedom to innovate, and for designer Terence Disdale to bring the owner’s vision to life.’ Disdale himself has become a household name in yacht design with his creations now famous for displaying the line between luxury and comfort that is so hard to balance. ‘Disdale perfectly encapsulated the owner’s vision for launching one of the finest yachts in the charter market’ adds Stewart, ‘RoMEA’s interior doesn’t overwhelm with the incredible detail that went into every element. Her opulence is subtle, and when one starts to truly focus on the sublime surroundings, it is then that Disdale’s genius, and the beauty of RoMEA, can truly be seen.’ For RoMEA, the devil is certainly in the detail. 182 finishes make up the interior to include a smorgasbord of exotic woods, marbles, rare metals, glass, and stonework along with bespoke furnishings and unique artworks. This has all been sympathetically crafted around the huge amount of facilities and a generous layout comprising a vast master suite, VIP stateroom and four further doubles to accommodate up to 12 guests. Like much of RoMEA’s design, the amenities on board have been built around the feeling of relaxation. From a Finnish sauna, plunge pool, and indoor and outdoor cinemas to a lower deck beach club and fully equipped luxury spa worthy of the most exclusive resorts on the Riviera, she allows for self-contained comfort at the highest level. While the wishes of an owner are

the core of any superyacht build, there is an ever increasing need to appeal to the very exclusive club of international travellers lucky enough to charter a yacht like this; ‘From the outset, the owner wanted to project their own values and style onto the design and build of RoMEA’ explains Stewart. ‘In doing so, they wish to attract a clientele who are similar to themselves in what they want to get out of being on board, and are proud to share their creation; their vision was to create a floating paradise.’

Superyacht RoMEA is one of the most unique vessels ever built by the German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen, with an exterior and interior design by Terence Disdale Design.

# 7 ONLYMAGAZINE I Travel Art & Lifestyle 21

Key to any charter experience is the crew and Imperial gave this as much attention as all other aspects of the build. The hand-picked team on board include a Head Chef who has just returned from an intensive sushi internship in Japan, fully qualified personal trainers, yoga instructors, sailing instructors, a masseuse, hair dresser, the list goes on. Together with their surroundings they bring to life the potential of travelling by superyacht, to see the world in a way that very few can.

THE ESSENCE OF FEADSHIP By Natalia Langsdale Photos Feadship

Since 1949, Feadship has prided itself in building over 450 bespoke motor yachts that are truly unique. The owners who have chosen Feadship for their expert craftsmanship, are true testament to the world-renowned shipbuilder’s ongoing success.

Every yacht built by Feadship is unequal and what is it, you might ask, that makes these majestic vessels appear time and time again even more exceptional from not only a design, but also an engineering and construction perspective? As Feadship itself says: “There are yachts and there are Feadships.” The answer lies in Feadship’s incredible ability in skilfully creating custom superyachts right from the very beginning when pen hits paper. The art of mastery entails designing a bespoke superyacht that is entirely individual and unlike any other in the world. As they themselves say, ‘custom’ should never be confused with ‘customising’ – which involves calibrating an existing concept. That however, is not Feadship’s philosophy. Together with the client, Feadship conceptualises a dream - an entirely tailor-made luxury yacht, reflecting the client’s personality and use that is moreover entirely exclusive. What remains at the core of each and every Feadship nevertheless, is the inherent quality that can only be experienced as you step foot on board. With such a longstanding heritage dating back so far as to the nineteenth century and an impressive string of awards for its outstanding superyachts, it is unsurprising that traditional values are to be found in absolutely every aspect of each discipline. Not one to be idle when it comes to the actual technology, Feadship never ceases to be on the lookout to set the 24 ONLYMAGAZINE I Travel Art & Lifestyle # 7

benchmark for artistry and innovative solutions so as to maximise on providing a comfortable end result. Feadship is not only recognised as the world leader in the field of pure custom super yachts but also operates dedicated charter and yacht services exclusively for Feadships. www.feadship.nl info@feadship.nl

Q&A WITH KARLENE PACK, CHARTER DIRECTOR FEADSHIP Q. What has been the feedback so far from existing Feadship owners on the charter concept? A. Most yacht owners have chartered in the past so they’re familiar with the concept. In fact, for many Feadship owners, the last yacht they chartered before commissioning their own vessel, was indeed a Feadship… When creating their Feadship, all owners have a specific type of use in mind, which can be seen in the final yacht layout and design. For some of them the yacht is an extension of the family life and they will only use it for holidays with their loved ones, others have a more business oriented approach and actively put their yacht on the charter market, and then there are owners who do a bit of both. As Feadship is a truly custom yacht builder, so is our charter marketing: when an owner wants to charter with us, we create a plan that exactly fits the specific needs of this yacht and owner. Q. Is Feadship responding to the market with the Feadship charter idea or is this something innovative within the yacht building industry? A. At Feadship we realize that chartering is a great introduction into yachting,

however, the charter market is big and there are many yachts on offer. We exclusively promote all the Feadships that are available for charter because we want people to experience our quality. In that way, we are different: Feadship Exclusive Charters is a service to Feadship owners and potential owners, where building yachts remains our core business. Q. How does Feadship position itself in the shipbuilding industry? What are its unique qualities? What do clients say about your offerings? A. Feadship creates custom built luxury yachts of up to about 110m. Most of our design, naval architecture, engineering, construction and outfitting work is done in-house. As a result, we have a dedicated and experienced staff – many workers have been with the company for decades. Each Feadship is defined by its superb craftsmanship and sets the standard in every aspect of design, engineering and construction.

DID YOU KNOW? Feadship is short for the First Export Association of Dutch SHIPbuilders. 1949: The group was founded when six yards and De Voogt Naval Architects agreed to pitch their high quality products on the American market under the Feadship name. 2016: There are three parties in Feadship: Two of the original yards – Royal Van Lent Shipyard (1849) and Koninklijke De Vries Scheepsbouw (1906) – and De Voogt Naval Architects (1913). Both yards have been granted royal status by the Dutch royal family in recent years. Each member of Feadship has a distinctive history and its own in-house disciplines and craftsmen.

BREAKING NEWS Feadship is going to open a giant new construction and refit facility in the heart of Amsterdam. It will include a 5,500m2 hall and 28 meters high for new builds of up to 160 meters along.

BEATING ALONGSIDE THE PULSE OF ITALIAN SHIPBUILDERS By Natalia Langsdale

OnlyYacht and OnlyYard Office Opens in Viareggio

Since its inception, OnlyYacht has gained a strong reputation within the marine industry, providing excellence in hull and machinery insurance along with crew and guest insurance. Being at the forefront of offering its clientele the most comprehensive insurance solutions means to live and breathe it daily by its team of experts right where the pulse beats at its strongest. Since developing OnlyYard in April 2015, Suisscourtage has seen a proactive push to build on close relationships and trust with shipyards responsible for building the world’s finest superyachts. Following on from the launch of OnlyYard in the Netherlands, Groupe Pastor’s decision to open up an office in the equally paramount town of Viareggio is based on the city’s position as the undisputed hub of the Italian yacht building industry. Today, Europe remains the world’s epicenter for yacht build and the Italian yacht and superyacht market continues to firmly stand tall in comparison to its other European counterparts, representing one of the by far largest with approximately 41% of new builds in 2016.* The seaside resort of Viareggio on the northern Tuscan Riviera has a longstanding maritime history dating

back to as far as 1577. What began as extensions on the banks of the Burlamacca canal was progressively to evolve from a small shipbuilding activity to a worldwide acclaimed industrial and manufacturing axis in yachting. With an office right next to Italy’s most distinguished luxury yacht builders, like Benetti, Perini Navi, Rossinavi, Codecasa, Sanlorenzo to name but a few, is testament to OnlyYacht’s resolution of reassessing its position as true experts in its field, being directly next to where its clients are. The group’s on-site specialists who will serve the Italian market have direct access to insurers at Lloyd’s, London Companies and Continental Europe, allowing its clients a comprehensive protection of people, property, information and above all reputation. The newly appointed team in Italy will be headed up by Massimo Bargagna, an insurance consultant with over 20 years of experience in surveying and insurance. OnlyYacht and OnlyYard specialists have of tailored risk assessment, risk management and risk transfer. ‘The OnlyYacht Viareggio office wants to be an additional help on issues encountered by shipyards as well as to the needs of customers by proposing

immediate and advanced solutions in the immediate vicinity,’ says Bargagna, who has been involved with the group since 2011. With the number of shipyards and owners that have entrusted OnlyYacht with their insurance over the past ten years, the group firmly believe that the true nature of insurance broking is to develop long-term relationships with its clients as a trusted advisor, allowing to provide bespoke insurance solutions to enable their businesses and at best protect their assets. As the importance of the Italian yacht market continues to grow, OnlyYacht’s presence is set to be the beginning of a fruitful collaboration to shipyards and owners, offering support throughout the construction process by identifying and assessing risk exposure, including liabilities, and to deliver customised insurance solutions to address their unique set of challenges. *FACTS FROM SUPERYACHT INTELLIGENCE ANNUAL REPORT 2016

ENTRENCHED PERFORMANCE

There are only a handful of aircraft that can match the aptitude of the Falcon 8X on so many levels. Moving on from the very successful 7X, its successor improves on a much longer and comfortable cabin, boldly offering the most extensive selection of cabin configurations available on any large cabin business aircraft. Another important factor is performance, with a significant gain on range, allowing it to fly passengers comfortably from Beijing to New York, Hong Kong to London or Los Angeles to Moscow, nonstop. It will also share the 7X’s exceptional operating economy and shortfield performance. When it comes to flying into short runways or steep approaches, the 8X clearly has a distinct advantage over other jets in its class, making this trijet the most capable business jet yet developed by Dassault.

Business travel is always on the increase in French Riviera airports. This abundance of prestigious travellers, with bigger and bigger staff and private jets is generating new demand for services adapted to clients who have expectations similar to 5-star luxury hotels. And it’s often the same people!

“The perfect welcome, professionalism, attitude and flexibility are the main qualities asked of each employee“

We are all familiar with ‘Concierge desks’ in 5* hotels, but in airports we use the term Fixed Base Operator, or an ‘FBO’ in business aviation language. The acronym FBO depicts a company capable of handle every detail before take-off, and as soon as the aeroplane touches down on the runway. A current trend? No, a necessity because these clients are evolving. Coming from the four corners of the world, their private craft are ever more voluminous. And Nice Cote d’Azur airport always manages to find parking spaces for its clientele. And it’s clear that the Riviera’s appeal is buoyant by playing host to international events such as the Monaco Grand Prix, the Cannes Film Festival, Mipim (real estate trade fair) as well as many other top-end events. This explains why the Riviera’s three

airports (Nice, Cannes, and St Tropez) recorded more than 46,000 business aircraft movements in 2015. What’s more, 2016 should see this pattern on the rise. In addition, there will be 54,000 helicopter movements which gives us an idea of the economic magnitude of this sector which places the Riviera in second place in Europe’s business aviation airports, behind Paris Le Bourget. SAVING TIME Planning a trip on the French Riviera for these VIP clients is very timeconsuming. “Between the flight, accommodation, welcoming crew and craft, our main objective is to avoid our clients wasting time” says Michel Tohane, Manager of the General Aviation Business Unit for Sky Valet We went to meet Sky Valet, a Fixed Base Operator which has transformed

the notion of ground handling service into a real 5-star concierge desk. Present in several Mediterranean airports near tourist destinations, Sky Valet further opens new lead-ins to other European countries in order to create a genuine FBO pan-European network. “The aim is simple: to provide with a single intermediary who simplifies relations” explains Michel Tohane. 5-STAR SERVICE Since Sky Valet has been involved in this FBO pan-European network, staff have all been trained how to look after VIP clients in the same way as 5-star hotels. The perfect welcome, professionalism, attitude and flexibility are the main qualities asked of each employee, no matter what position they have. “Our method of working is very similar to luxury hotels; we have to adapt our services to clients from radically different cultural backgrounds” Michel Tohane points out. We want to make Sky Valet the European number one of toprange FBOs” explains Michel Tohane. “We offer made-to–measure services for both private owners and airline companies in the most soughtafter destinations” Michel Tohane concludes. Since September 2015, Monacair has been transporting passengers by helicopter between Monaco and Nice. An important market according to MD Gilbert Schweitzer, who thinks that in the long term the company will fly more than 100,000 passenger with one clear objective: offering the highest-quality service. Founded in 1988 by Stephano Casiraghi, Monacair has made V.I.P. transportation its key business.

The leading commercial helicopter company worldwide in terms of traffic, the flight between Monaco and Nice takes just seven minutes and offers many advantages, including pre-registration of luggage to your final destination on a national or international Air France flight, and avoiding heavy traffic on the roads in the summer season as well as during major events (Grand Prix, Monaco Yacht Show etc.) Plus you experience an unforgettable flight, with magnificent views from the helicopter over the Riviera coastline… all for a very reasonable price. In winning the Monaco Government’s tender, Monacair has become a key player in the region’s air transport sector, and is a determining logistical factor in the Principality’s expansion plans for tourism. Monacair is easily able to handle the challenge of coping with the huge influx of passengers for the major events that take place in Monaco. To do this, the airline has increased its flotilla by ordering six new H130 helicopters from Airbus in Marignane. An investment that has cost more than 17 million Euros, and which ensures regular services between Monaco Heliport and Nice Côte d’Azur Airport. These six new mono-turbine helicopters are totally dedicated to the regular service and can carry 5 passengers with luggage in total security.

In order to perfect the quality of service, major work to renovate Monaco’s heliport has been contracted by the Government, due to finish in 2018. OnlyJet, the specialist aviation insurance company, has insured the entire fleet since 1st January 2016. www.monacair.mc

Christian Liaigre strives to create timeless spaces and pieces of furniture, which reflect a sense of calm and sophistication. Basing his design on local cultures and traditions, he constantly uses noble materials and soft colours. This apartment in Athens, Greece, reflects Christian Liaigre’s philosophy and aesthetics.

Over the last 30 years, Christian Liaigre has become one of the most sought-after furniture and interior designers in the world. His understated style has already charmed some of the most discerning clients. Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren and Rupert Murdoch are among the many who trust Paris-based creative Christian Liaigre. “Interior architecture and design are far from fashion and trends but synonym to timelessness, calm beauty and subtle luxury,” the French designer says.

Meyer, currently serving as artistic director of Liaigre’s interior design studio, and Déborah Comte-Liaigre, his wife, who manages the showrooms and the collections. “Before, my work was very masculine, but Frauke and Déborah have introduced softness,” Liaigre confesses.

Using space and light to shape refined pieces of furniture and interior spaces, Liaigre opened his first studio in 1985 and his first showroom in 1987, both located in the City of Light. Today, he has more than 20 showrooms across the world, in cities including Munich, Singapore, Shanghai, Miami, New York and London—the last two being the most successful, currently. Liaigre’s style has evolved since his debut, especially thanks to his collaboration with two women: Frauke

Pure lines, perfect proportions and high-quality finishes are key when designing a new collection. “A material or a colour could be the starting point to create a new piece or series. But it takes weeks and often months to put everything in place and feel that it comes together naturally,” states Comte-Liaigre. For the whole team, it is crucial to work with French craftsmen. “It has been years that we have collaborated with some of them, which gave us the opportunity

The creative spirit of Liaigre relies on delicacy and rareness, reflecting the team’s love for art and crafts, as well as for local cultures and traditions. Multiculturalism

With their bold creations, Brazilian brothers Humberto an d Fern an do Campana have become two of the most famous designers on the planet.

Humberto Campana throught he would become a lawyer and his brother Fernando wanted to be an architect. In 1983, however, they founded their own design studio in Sao Paulo, to use as a lab for experimentation. Today, the duo is well-known for translating the Brazilian identity into original pieces of furniture and objects that not only create bridges between craftsmanship and mass production, but also establish a dialog between emotion and functionality. “Our country is our source of inspiration: the urban chaos, the

social mestizaje, the favelas,” they say. For example, their Favela chair— distributed by Italian designer furniture company Edra—is made from strips of natural wood similar to those used to build the shacks of the favelas in Brazil. While the brothers initially decided to work with affordable and reclaimed materials since they didn’t have the money for more expensive ones, today, their motivation is to give those materials a new use and level of preciousness, making the Campanas true promoters of sustainable design.

IMAGES ©COURTESY OF YES!HOTELS

The materials are clearly the elements that guide the form and function of every project and concept. Their philosophy lies in simple yet essential principles: “We strive to continue to investigate, share our ideas and vision with other people. We try to convince them and we want to open the doors to young creative minds,” Humberto and Fernando explain. The talent of the two brothers has quickly crossed the borders of their country of origin. In Paris, they refurbished the Café de l’Horloge in the Musée d’Orsay; in New York, they designed the Camper boutique; and in Athens, they worked on their first hospitality project, New Hotel, and invited local students to participate in the adventure. Admirers of architects Oscar Niemeyer, Shigeru Ban, Frank Gehry,

Rem Koolhaas and Renzo Piano, as well as of designers Shiro Kuramata, Achille Castiglioni, Ingo Maurer and Ettore Sottsass, the Campana brothers have developed a very personal style, which incorporate the ideas of transformation, reinvention, multiculturalism and creative chaos. The duo has collaborated with international brands such as Alessi, Baccarat, Bernardaud, Fendi and Moleskine. Some of their creations are included in the permanent collections of the MoMA in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in Sao Paulo and Germany’s Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, among others. Staying true to their values, the brothers also regularly establish partnerships with Brazilian craftsmanship communities to produce limited edition designs. www.campanas.com.br

Translating the Brazilian identity into design is the most important challenge for Humberto and Fernando Campana who founded their studio in 1983, in Sao Paulo. Working in partnership with communities, factories and industries keeps the Estudio Campana repertoire fresh.

In 2015, the fourteenth edition of Art Basel Miami Beach attracted 267 leading international galleries from 32 countries and 77,000 visitors over five days, including private collectors, curators and museum directors, among others. Some of the giants of the art world such as Gagosian Gallery (New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Rome, Athens, Geneva and Hong Kong), White Cube (London and Hong Kong) and Galerie Perrotin (Paris, New York and Hong Kong) could not miss such an important rendez-vous. In the booths, were exhibited stunning pieces made by the most valued artists

on the globe such as Anish Kapoor, Damien Hirst or Picasso. The youngest players in the market had a chance to raise their profile through the Nova section, which featured artworks shaped in the last three years. For example, Luciano Figueiredo, Sandra Gamarra and Mauro Piva had their work showcased at Brazilian Galeria Leme; Ciprian Muresan or Navid Nuur’s pieces could be seen at German Galeria Plan B; Antoine Catala and Gregory Edwards were represented by New York gallery 47 Canal. Over a period of twenty years, Huang Yong Ping has explored the major issues of our time such as conflict, economics, religion and nature. For Monumenta 2016, he developed the installation “Empires”, which forms a landscape, made up of eight mounds of freight containers, a metal snake suspended from a crane that unfurls like mist between mountains, and a bicorn hat set on an arch directly inspired by the one worn by Napoleon at the Battle of Eylau.

Discovering the work of some of the world’s greatest contemporary artists in the nave of the Grand Palais is always a fascinating visual experience. With its 13,500-square-metre area and its 45-metre-high glass and steel dome -the biggest structure of its kind in Europe- this exceptional historic building has hosted Monumenta every two years since 2014. (It was previously a yearly event, which first took place in 2007.) Anselm Kiefer, Richard Serra, Christian Boltanski, Anish Kapoor, Daniel Buren, and Ilya and Emilia Kabakov are among the artists that have tackled the challenge. This year, from May 8 to June 18, the artwork of Huang Yong Ping -who was born in China in 1954 and currently lives in France- occupies this stunning space. “The immense immersive installation consists of a colourful architecture of eight islands over which looms a structure whose drop shadow complements the metal skeleton of the glass dome,” explains Jean de Loisy, curator of Monumenta 2016. Through this project, titled “Empires,” Huang Yong Ping has created a symbolic landscape of today’s world. Using the Grand Palais -a masterpiece of the industrial era- as a backdrop, he showcases the transformation of politics and economy, the growth of new regions and the decline of ancient empires, as well as the apparition of new power players. Huang Yong Ping is well known for his radical vision and considered a major

figure of the avant-garde in China. In the mid-1980s, he founded Xiamen Dada, an art group heralding the philosophy: “Artworks are for the artist what opium is for men. Until art is destroyed, life is never peaceful. Dada is dead,” as written in the 1986 Statement on Burning. Interested in marrying Dadaism and Zen Buddhism, Huang Yong Ping is a master in combining references from East and West, taking inspiration from religious and philosophical myths to create powerful artworks. His desire to cultivate paradox and protest through the absurd characterises his almost excessive style. “Strategies, tactics, politics, art and the art of war, the desire for power and wealth, ruins, the birth or rebirth of societies: every country, conglomerate or multinational that participates in the interminable successions of grandeur and decadence seeks -even for just a few moments- its own empire,” says Jean de Loisy. Offering a broad reflection on globalization, Huang Yong Ping uses the plural form “Empires” to give the word a broad definition, which includes all political organizations, economic systems and cultural entities established around a unique central authority. Once again, Monumenta astonishes with a monumental piece that not only stimulates our imagination but also invites us to think about some key topics related to the current world’s transformation. www.grandpalais.fr

JEAN-GABRIEL MITTERRAND, FOUNDER Jean-Gabriel Mitterrand created the Domaine du Muy in 2014. In the same year, his Parisian sculpture gallery, founded in 1988, was re-named the Galerie Mitterrand and a space exclusively dedicated to living, contemporary artists was opened there. Jean-Gabriel Mitterrand’s penchant for sculpture has also led him to organise numerous exhibitions of monumental works in public places, from the outdoor show at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro in 1999 to the sculpture show at World Exp 2010 in Shanghai, where the invitation to exhibit was the result of winning an international competition. From 1974 for a period of 12 years, he contributed to the creation and managed the Limited Editions Department of the auction house, Artcurial.

The Domaine du Muy, located between Monaco, Marseille and Aix-en-Provence, not far from Saint-Tropez and Nice, is a park which hosts exhibitions of sculpture by emerging as well as established contemporary artists. It was created in 2014, thanks to the efforts of Jean-Gabriel Mitterrand, who wanted to design a place to show modern and contemporary sculpture in an outdoor setting. The Domaine du Muy is nestled in the heart of the Bonne Eau national park conservation area, where forests of cork oaks and pines extend over hundreds of hectares. The park offers collectors and art-lovers alike a private promenade lasting around one hour over a two-kilometre stretch right in the middle of the Provençal countryside. Set against the natural backdrop of its secluded valley, ponds and wild, untouched areas, the visitor becomes immersed in a world of unique, rustic beauty alongside the 30 or so pieces exhibited each year between May and October. The park is brought to life by and evolves constantly with the new works installed and the longevity of others, some of which are created by artists in residence. The project has been organised by Simon Lamunière, in partnership with Edward Mitterrand. Its end result is a deliberate artistic juxtaposition between the purity of nature and the sometimes respectful and sometimes brutally imposing sculptures.

Philippe Pastor “The Burned Trees”

As part of this year’s summer programming at Monaco’s Grimaldi Forum, the exceptional participation of Philippe Pastor’s “The Burned Trees” sculpture installation will form an integral part of the reception area outside the European Art Fair Monaco, the classical and contemporary art exhibition. “The Burned Trees”, consisting of tall, charred obelisks, symbols of the fight against deforestation, have been shown from New York to Singapore, in partnership with various different organisations which are committed to protecting the environment. In this context, Philippe Pastor was involved with the reforestation campaigns of the United Nations Environment Programme, taking part in several lectures at the United Nations’ headquarters in New York and, more recently, in different projects with Nicolas Hulot. Ever since he started

out, the Monaco artist has supported the Principality’s activities in the area of the protection of the environment. Each of the trees in the exhibition weighs almost one ton. They are rooted firmly in the ground and all stand aloof at six metres high. Somewhere between an architectural statement and an open dialogue with the onlooker, the aim of “The Burned Trees” is to raise questions about one, single reality: the carelessness of man and his devastating effect upon nature. In the setting of the scorching summer sun of the Principality, Philippe Pastor’s sculptures remind us unavoidably of something vitally important which concerns us every day: the terrible forest fires which still regularly ravage the south of France. www.philippe-pastor.com www.grimaldiforum.com

With an area of over 110,000 square kilometers and more than 2,000 nautical miles of coastline, Cuba is the largest and one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean. The recent announcement that the United States will re-establish diplomatic relations with Cuba has widespread implications. In only a few months, the island has already attracted new travellers, becoming a trendy destination. With its small towns well known for their Spanish colonial architecture and its beautiful natural landscapes, Cuba is worth a visit. Sunny almost all yearlong, Cuba has a subtropical climate—with a cooler, dry and more pleasant season that takes place from November to April—and is surrounded by pristine water with a visibility that often reaches 30 to 40 metres. The white sandy beaches and the great number of lagoons and bays that invite swimmers with 25- to 30-degree Celsius water are just some of the reasons why the Cuban archipelago is drawing more and more attention.

When it comes to yachting, however, some precautions should be taken. The coastal infrastructure and facilities are not fully ready to welcome yachts and superyachts. But the north coast of the main island (situated directly across the strait from Florida) seems to be the most appropriate for these types of vessels. Three marinas—Hemingway, Darsena at Varadero and Gaviota Varadero— are close to each other, which gives boaters options in case one of them is full. On the south coast, options are much more limited as marina facilities are usually smaller and busier. However, the south coast is a must-stop destination for those who want to explore Jardines de la Reina, one of the region’s largest and healthiest coral reefs. Most Cuban marinas are fixed docks constructed from cement. In some locations, fresh water is often

Despite the fact that it can sometimes be difficult to find some items such as rice, beans, milk, butter, sugar and coffee -due to rationingother fresh products are available in abundance. Buying fish and other seafood, as well as vegetables and fruit at local markets is a truly enjoyable experience. While Cuba’s tourism industry still faces its challenges, including obstacles to become a premiere destination for yachtsmen, it is only a matter of time. At the confluence of the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, the archipelago offers ample possibilities for sea lovers. www.autenticacuba.com

As part of the preparation of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, the city has been transformed. For example, a large-scale urban waterfront revitalization project called “Porto Maravilha” was developed to increase the city centre’s attractiveness. Rio international airport also got full makeover ahead of the Olympic Games, almost doubling its passenger capacity, adding nearly 100 shops and restaurants, and rolling out new hightechnology equipment.

The list of places that cannot be missed in Brazil’s cultural capital is never-ending. Let’s discover some of the best recommendations. From August 5 to 21, all eyes are on Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympic Games. The world’s biggest sporting event requires months of preparation. Several projects for the revitalization of the city’s districts have been undertaken to provide the best level of facilities and services. Porto Maravilha (“The Marvellous Port”), home to the Rio Museum of Art (MAR) designed by Oscar Niemeyer - the most renowned architect in the country’s history and the new Museum of Tomorrow by famous Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, is a good example. Officially founded in 1555, Rio de Janeiro has a rich history, which is

particularly reflected through its architecture. Facades of old colonial houses have been repainted in their original colours including ochre, blue, red and green. The city owes much its current dynamism and the transformation of its historic heart to the immense success of Rio’s famous carnival and the Olympic Games this year, but there are many other reasons for the influx of travellers. People from all around the world are drawn by the many activities and places to discover in the Carioca capital. The Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, the botanical garden, Sugarloaf Mountain and

the Christ the Redeemer statue on top of Corcovado are some the most popular attractions. There is also a great variety of hotels, restaurants, bars and boutiques for foodies and shopping enthusiasts. Among the legendary accommodations, Copacabana Palace, which opened its doors in 1923 and is famous for hosting such names as Fred Astaire, the Rolling Stones and Nelson Mandela, is located on the idyllic Copacabana beach. This historic hotel continues to epitomize the glamour of the city. The hip neighbourhood of Ipanema hosts another sophisticated option; Fasano Rio de Janeiro features 79 rooms and 10 suites, all with terraces, decorated with chic contemporary touches. French “starchitect” Philippe Starck is the creative mind behind this luxurious Ipanema property. Yet another distinct hotel, La Suite, is furnished with a mix

of vintage and contemporary pieces and houses seven unique suites. The stunning mansion offers sweeping views of the ocean, the Cagarras Islands, the Corcovado and the Niteroi Mountains. Incredible restaurants and lively bars are everywhere in Rio. Sitting hillside in the Santa Teresa district, Aprazivel is the ideal place to taste Brazilian cuisine made from local products in a lush, relaxing atmosphere. Closer to the coast, Confeitaria Colombo, founded in 1894, features a restaurant and tearoom. The eatery has become an institution, where guests choose from a selection of Spanish and Portuguese plates, and French and British pastries. The Centro Cultural Carioca invites visitors to discover Brazilian music by way of samba concerts and classes. For shopping, Dona Coisa is an interesting concept store that celebrates local

fashion and Marzio Fiorini creates jewellery that reflects the country’s multiculturalism. A symbol of the Brazilian lifestyle, Havaianas’ flip-flops are the essential accessory for those who want to complete their Carioca look. Finally, design aficionados can stop by Mercado Moderno to get an overview of Brazilian masters’ work from the 1950s to the 1980s, including Joaquim Tenreiro, Jorge Zalszupin, Ricardo Fasanello and Sergio Rodrigues. Combining tradition and progress, Château Dassault is one of the top wine producers in the southwest of France.

The story of Château Dassault dates back 60 years, when Marcel Dassault - a pioneer of France’s aerospace industry - bought Château Couperie on an impulse in 1955, before changing its name. Surrounded by a serene natural landscape in Saint-Emilion, about 40 kilometres west from Bordeaux, the property comprises a 19th-century, Second Empire-style castle and an area under vine of 29 hectares, the result of passion and hard work. Every stage of the growing process requires careful attention to guarantee the highest level of quality. In addition to expenditures of time and effort, several monetary investments were made over the years to fine-tune methods and equipment. The year 1969 clearly marked

a turning point as the vineyard earned “grand cru classé” status. About 90,000 bottles are produced every year in a sand and siliceous limestone soil, and the average age of the Château Dassault vines is 35 years. The grape varieties provide different flavours, resulting in a perfect blend. Merlot (70 per cent) gives roundness to the wine while Cabernet Franc (23 per cent) gives structure and Cabernet Sauvignon (7 per cent) adds red fruit and striking tannin. Mastering the art of winemaking is no simple task. The time-intensive process involves many steps including vinification and ageing, the latter requiring anywhere from 14 to 18 months. Grapes from each vineyard are fermented separately and the wood barrels - made of oak from central

Vintage after vintage, the winemaker’s objective is to progress, improve and achieve new levels of excellence while respecting the terroir and the spirit of tradition. Today, Dassault Wine Estates is chaired by Laurent Dassault (Marcel Dassault’s grandson) and managed by Laurence Brun. Reminiscing the magic and rumbles of the classic racing days THE GRAND PRIX DE MONACO HISTORIQUE

T

When the recognisable splutters and roars of engines and distinctive smells of fuel and retired engines fill the air of the world’s most exciting destination in May for motor racing, you know you have arrived in time for the highlight in racing. aking place for the very first time in true glamour back in 1997, the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique by the Automobile Club de Monaco is today hailed as one of the Principality’s most exciting rendez-vous for classic motor sport connoisseurs and enthusiasts who want to step back in time and refuel their passion. Over 50 years of motor racing is commemorated through eight exceptional series, highlighting the most prestigious cars and recalling the epic racing days of the past. The days where spectators would truly be left hanging off the edges of their seats with the danger and adrenaline put forth by grand prix legends such

as Niki Lauda, Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss or Jackie Stewart instantly comes alive as you watch and hear the engines roaring past Monaco’s iconic racing track. Where so much history is relived, it is no surprise that each second year of the race’s existence, brings back even more vivid memories and 2016 holds an even more special significance. The unmissable biennial event will celebrate its glorified 10th anniversary, bringing together collectors, nostalgic enthusiasts, drivers, spectators and ardent supporters of former days’ mechanics both old and young.

2016 SERIES Charmed by the rendition of what used to be motor racing in its glory days dating back so as pre war GrandPrix cars, crowds never cease to come admire these historical beauties. Everyone is enthralled by coming up close and personal with the veteran drivers, owners and mechanics themselves, to get a unique rendition of how it used to be back in the ‘good old days.’

• Race A: Pre-war Grand-Prix Cars. • Race B: Pre-1961 front-engined F1 Grand Prix and F2 cars. • Race C: Front engine Sports Racing cars raced from 1952 to 1955. • Race D: Front-engined, drum brakes Formula Junior Cars from 1958 to 1960. • Race E: 1500 F1 Grand Prix Cars from 1961 to 1965. • Race F: F1 Grand Prix Cars from 1966 to 1972. • Race G: F1 Grand Prix Cars from 1973 to 1976.

A real sprint race within two and a half days, contested on the legendary circuit of Monaco two weeks before the Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco, the event is a chronicled celebration of those who lent their precision driving, technical excellence and sheer bravery on the racing track. These were the fore fathers of what is one of the most elitist and technologically advanced sports in today’s day and age. A not to be missed event that will surely whet your appetite and leave you admiring the advancement of the skills and mechanical revolution that we see on the tracks today. www.acm.mc

IN THE FAST LANE For the German with Nico Rosberg Formula One driver, Nico Rosberg, the Monegasque Principality definitely holds a special place on more than one level. We caught up with the three-time Monaco Formula One champion to see what makes ‘the Rock’ and its 2 square kilometres so dear to his heart in an intimate Q&A interview.

By Natalia Langsdale Photos Nico Rosberg PR

After having won at the Monaco Grand Prix in 2013, 30 years on from your father, Keke Rosberg, how did this make you feel? Winning Monaco for the first time was really awesome and it is my most special win so far. Monaco is my home race and makes it that bit more amazing because all my friends and family live there and of course it is great to be able to sleep at in my own bed again! But I have to admit though that sometimes I need to move to the guest room as the parties at the beach can get really loud and I can’t get enough sleep before the all important race. You have lived in Monaco all your childhood, what is your view of the Principality?

Monaco offers a great quality of life. It is safe, has great weather and offers the opportunity to meet a lot of great people. I really know every corner inside out. For me personally, Monaco is the best place. I will always stay here. Favourite hot spots in Monaco? My favourite thing to do when back in Monaco is to go to a pizza place along the beachfront or up on the hills above Monaco. There is a really an awesome view of the Principality from up there. How do you see the Formula One season for 2016? It is the longest season ever in Formula One with 21 races. I’m glad Hockenheim is back

on the calendar as the Formula One German Grand Prix - my second home race in the calendar. The season is running well for me so far. But I need to stay focused and see every race as a single challenge. What has changed in Formula One since you started racing? A lot has changed in the past few years especially with the new Hybrid Power Units. Everything is much more complicated now but also much more efficient which is great. I love that we have some more opportunities with the settings.

the tunnel on my way to school every day. The track does not allow you any mistakes. You need to be very precise. How do you “switch off ” - what do you do in your pastime? Whenever I have some time off I like to spend it with my family and friends at home. I’m on the road so often, so I like it at home.

How does it feel to be a Monaco champion - what motivates you to win? My father told me once that you should reach three big achievements in Formula One. Winning a race, winning Monaco and winning the Championship. I ticked the first two boxes already, which is great. Monaco is so special. What makes a good racing driver and a winner at the Monaco Grand Prix? I know the track very well because I lived all my life there and I actually walked through

MONTE-CARLO PADEL MASTER 6-11 SEPTEMBER 2016 By Natalia Langsdale

In its second edition this year in Monaco, Suisscourtage is proud to show its support to the rising popularity of the Monte-Carlo Padel Master 2016 edition by being official sponsors.

As an avid sportsman himself, President of Suisscourtage, Jean-Victor Pastor hails the sport: ‘Monte Carlo Padel Master reunites all the values of combat sport, fair play and endurance. With Maya Bay, Suisscourtage are pleased to be involved as sponsors by offering the catering in the VIP area, thus putting forth the expertise and mastery of Thai and Japanese fine dining that is dear to our group.’ Rising in popularity, Padel is a racket sport attracting an affluent audience as the sport’s popularity continues to increase. This young sport has lived to see a great professional outburst in the last 10 years. The sport was invented in Acapulco, Mexico, by Enrique Corcuera in 1969. It is currently most prominent in Hispanic American countries such as Argentina and Mexico as well as in Spain and Andorra, although it is now beginning to spread rapidly across Europe to include Monaco and other continents. After a big blast in Argentina in the 90s, the new century saw an increase of importance in tournaments worldwide and sees its headquarters in Spain, where up to 16 tournaments in the calendar are developed. From 2015 the relish for this sport has experienced a constant growth,

in line with the enlargement of the number of players. Every tourney unites an average of 20,000 fans in stadiums with a capacity of over 5,000 spectators. These numbers set Padel as the third sport only behind football and basketball, overcoming other old-established sports such as handball or indoor football. Gathering the best players from all around the world, Padel is typically played in doubles on an enclosed court a third the size of a tennis court. Scoring is the same as normal tennis and the balls used are similar but with a little less pressure, the main differences are that the court has walls and the balls can be played off them in a similar way as in the game of squash and that solid, stringless racquets are used. The height of the ball being served must be at or below the waist level. ‘This event is an opportunity for us to forge close links with our clients to whom we assure a close relationship on a businessfront,’ says Jérôme Ragas, CEO of the Suisscourtage Assurances. ‘It is perfect to invite our best clientele to introduce them to the fast-paced sport in a friendly and relaxing ambiance.’ www.montecarlopadelmaster.com
