Girl Power!

I grew up the only boy in a house full of women. Strong, feisty, passionate, amazing women. As the oldest child, I watched my mother work several jobs at a time during my youth to make ends meet while I helped take care of my younger sisters.

Those incredible women provided me a perspective of the world and their gender that I might not have otherwise had. It shaped my relationships and opened my eyes to the blatant inequity when I walked into the workforce in the early 1990’s. Much work still needs to be done on this front, but we’ve come a long way from those days.

With “International Day of the Girl” coming up on October 11th, we wanted to spotlight a shining example of girl power for our cover story.

Kart Racing, the gateway to a professional race car driving career, is as heavily male dominated as the pro circuit. Kaylee Countryman is breaking barriers and records in her journey to a professional career on the track. Enjoy our cover story on this talented young woman and keep an eye out for her in the racing world!

The transition from summer vacation back to school can be a difficult one, but the best way to tackle these changes is by being prepared. We’ve put together this list of tips to help you and your little ones (even if they’re not so little anymore) feel ready for the new school year – so study up!

Start Early

Sudden changes in routine are not a good way to kick off the school year. If possible, start making steady changes sooner, up to several weeks before the start of the new school year. This will steadily transition sleep, diet, and work schedules. You as a parent may have to make some changes too, so be prepared!

Transition Sleep Schedules

As we mentioned above, changing routines can be a difficult task. One of the most challenging parts of back-to-school season is adjusting sleep schedules. As summer passes, the days will start to feel shorter and for many waking up early can feel more difficult than normal. Children and teens also require more sleep than adults, with teens generally preferring to go to bed later. Accounting for this when setting sleep schedules is essential. If they are having trouble making the change, be sure that caffeine, food, and electronics are limited no less than 8 hours, 4 hours, and 30 minutes beforehand respectfully.

Establish a Routine

Our bodies thrive on consistent routines. Ensuring that your family is on a consistent routine even during the summer can help smooth the transition back to school. This will be especially helpful to working parents who can’t change their routines throughout the year. Plan for regular meals, exercise, social time, work, study time, and don’t forget quality time together as a family.

Organize Assignments

Many students still receive summer assignments to be turned in at the beginning of the next school year. Letting these assignments fall by the wayside is certain to spoil the end of summer break when it all needs to be done at once. Spreading it out or getting it done early into summer break can leave the rest of summer vacation free for fun!

Keep Open Lines of Communication

The most important thing to remember for Back-to-School is to communicate with your kids. This transition can be stressful and exciting and it’s important to let your kids know that they can always share what’s bothering them. You should also keep an open line of communication available for teachers, coaches, and other family members so everyone is on the same page.

Back-to-School can be a big change, but it is also an opportunity for a fresh start. Be sure you and your family are prepared and set up for success!

In the fast-paced realm of motorsports, where the roar of engines, the smell of burnt rubber and karts reaching speeds of nearly 80 mph, create an adrenaline-fueled symphony, one young prodigy is making her mark. Meet Kaylee, a thirteen-year-old dynamo who is revolutionizing the racing scene with her unwavering passion and exceptional skills.

A Glimpse into Kaylee's World

"My name is Kaylee," she begins with a bright smile, "and I'm a thirteenyear-old girl in motorsports. I've been racing karts for a year and a half now and absolutely love it." A recent transition to online schooling was necessary to accommodate the demands of her racing pursuits. Yet, even in the face of this challenge, Kaylee's enthusiasm remains unshaken. "My favorite subjects are math and social studies," she reveals, hinting at the analytical mindset that undoubtedly aids her on the track. With dreams of becoming a professional race-car driver, Kaylee is setting her sights on a future defined by speed, determination, and unbridled success.

The Spark that Ignited the Passion

Kaylee's journey into racing was ignited by a fascination with speed and a deep appreciation for the intricate dance between man and machine. "I got into racing because I admired the speed and nerves I get," she shares. Her connection to the sport runs deep, encompassing both the physical and mental aspects. "I enjoy the nerves, work, competition, speed, passing, and sometimes the starts," Kaylee muses, her words echoing the heart-pounding thrill of the race. Her inspiration? Max Verstappen, the Formula 1 sensation known for his calm yet aggressive driving style. "I want to be like him, and better," she declares with determination.

A Day in the Life of a Rising Star

Kaylee's daily routine revolves around her relentless pursuit of excellence. Whether it's a practice day or a race day, the dedication she pours into her craft is unwavering. "On a race day, I'll wake up an hour and a half prior to the time we need to leave for the track," she explains. This early start ensures she's fully awake and focused, ready to tackle the challenges ahead. Despite the long hours spent at the track, Kaylee acknowledges her need to improve her eating habits, an aspect she's actively working on.

Accelerating Towards Success

Joining J3 Competition, a factory team known for nurturing exceptional talent, stands as Kaylee's proudest achievement to date. "They have had great teaching methods, and they all really understand racing," she notes. As she continues to train with the guidance of industry experts, Kaylee is resolute in her goal to become the best. This year, her sights are set on a significant milestone: "I aim to make it to the final in arguably the biggest race in the world." It's a lofty ambition, but one that mirrors Kaylee's unyielding determination and hunger for victory.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned so far is that in this sport, you cannot half-ass it. It’s either all in, or not at all. You’ve got to stay committed, be motivated on and off the track, execute, and keep a good mindset throughout the entire journey.

In a sport where gender disparities persist, Kaylee acknowledges the differences in coaching and delivery between male and female racers. "My coach seems to be less harsh on me especially when I mess up," she reflects. While advocating for equal treatment, Kaylee's focus remains on mastering her craft. Patience, she emphasizes, is key – a virtue essential for both triumph and personal growth.

Mastering the Mental Game

"The most challenging part of this sport is having patience and like any sport and being one person," Kaylee explains. Navigating the intricate dance of maintaining consistency on and off the track requires a steadfast mindset. "To overcome it, you have to be mentally strong," she advises, highlighting the power of positive self-talk and a resolute determination to shatter selfimposed limits.

Embracing the Journey Ahead

As Kaylee's racing journey unfolds, she finds boundless excitement in the prospect of exploring new tracks and climates. "Travelling so much for this racing builds confidence for me and allows me to have more racing experience," she enthuses. Each twist and turn of the road fuels her appetite for discovery and growth. Although based in Chandler, AZ, Kaylee travels a lot. Just this year she has raced in Houston, TX twice, Pittsburgh PA twice, Tucson, AZ, Salt Lake, UT, Edmonton, Canada, Vancouver, Canada. She also has races scheduled for Indianapolis IN, and Las Vegas, NV. The goal is to make it to Worlds next year in Bahrain.

Lessons Carved in the Circuit

The journey has already imparted valuable lessons to this young racing sensation. "The biggest lesson I've learned so far is that in this sport, you cannot half-ass it," Kaylee declares emphatically. Her wisdom encapsulates the essence of commitment, motivation, execution, and unwavering self-belief – qualities that underscore her path to greatness.

In a realm dominated by speed, strategy, and skill, Kaylee stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration. With her eyes firmly fixed on the horizon, she is primed to break barriers, shatter records, and redefine the landscape of motorsports. As the engine of her kart roars to life, so does a new chapter in the legacy of a fearless young racer named Kaylee.

Re-decorating your home can seem like a big endeavor, but these simple tips will break down the process into manageable steps so you can channel all the #fall vibes with ease.

Pillows

Placing throw pillows on your couch, bed, and chairs is one of the easiest ways to change aesthetics for the season. Choose tones that encapsulate the season. Many stores such as At Home and HomeGoods have aisles with color-coded pillows of all shades to make matching easy as pumpkin pie.

Bedding

Swapping out your bedding is a must if you want to turn your bedroom into a cozy fall oasis. Choose warm neutral tones so you can use the bedding for both fall and winter!

PUMPKINS THIS FALL HOW TO REUSE YOUR

Donate Them

We always love to find new ways to reduce waste and our footprint where we can. We hope these tips will be useful to you this fall. Maybe you’ll even start a new tradition!

Pumpkins are a token fall squash, but how many times have we watched them rot and waste away on the front porch? We love making the most of what we have, so if you’re interested in giving your fall pumpkins a second life, we have the tips for you.

What if you’re not interested in the extra work or maybe you just don’t like pumpkin? Plenty of organizations would love to take them off your hands. Check with local zoos, sanctuaries, farms, and composters to see if any of them can make use of them.

Decorate Them

*Be sure your pumpkins are clean, unrotted, and untouched by insects or animals before consuming. Pumpkins kept inside the home may be best.

Roast Them

If you’re using your pumpkins for carving, roasting the seeds can be a great way to use the entirety of the pumpkin. Plus, you get a delicious snack while carving! *

Cook Them

When it comes to cooking, pumpkins might be more versatile than you think. Whether you’re pureeing, roasting, making soup stock, or anything else, the pumpkin’s hearty nature is sure to satisfy.

Compost Them

So, what if you’ve already carved them? It’s not too late! Once you no longer have a need for your pumpkins, you can give them a new purpose through compost. Whether you have your own compost or use someone else’s, pumpkins will make excellent soil for the next season of planting.

Of course, we couldn’t create this list without sharing the most obvious (and maybe best) way to reuse your pumpkins. Creating a delicious, fall-themed dessert might just be a requirement if you’re looking for ways to make the most of your pumpkin harvest. *

Did you know uncarved pumpkins can last up to 2-3 months? It might be hard to believe, but if you have extra pumpkins and you can keep them untouched and out of the sun, they make excellent fall decorations, and may even make it to Thanksgiving!

TRENDING WALL TREATMENTS FOR

Gone are the days of boring, blank, minimalist walls. 2023 home design has been all about showing off personality and unique style, and specialty wall treatments are having their moment in the spotlight. We wanted to share our favorite wall treatments that are coming back into style.

WALLPAPERS

Wallpaper originally went out of style almost 100 years ago but it has made a comeback in a big way. People are no longer just using it for accent walls either, now choosing to paste it nearly anywhere from hallways to bathrooms to all across kitchens. Colors and patterns are bright, modern and contrast well with popular vintage furniture and decor trends. Wallpaper is also great for renters with damage-free alterations that can be removed at move-out.

BOX TRIM & BOARD AND BATTEN

These treatment styles are classics and have been trending for some time now, but we don’t see them losing steam anytime soon. Easy to install and beautifully simple, both box trim and board and batten can look stunning in nearly any home. We love them on accent walls in contrast with a bright paint color or eye-catching wall piece.

TILE

Throw images of old, boring tile with dirty grout out of your mind. We are talking textured tile, colorful tile, tile made from different materials. We saw this example with vintage notes and fell in love. Use it as a kitchen backsplash or to decorate your fireplace for a pop of something different.

MURALS

People are putting more and more thought into making their house a home. A personalized mural is a unique way to catch attention and personalize your space to your taste. We are seeing people all over the internet design murals for different areas of the house, but our favorites so far are the ones for kids’ rooms. What a cool way to make the kid zone the fun zone!

LIMEWASHING

Limewashing is the 2023 professional interior designer’s wall treatment of choice. Introduced by the Belgians, limewashing involves crushing limestone into a powder, burning it, and mixing it with water into a putty. The putty is then aged and thinned out with water and colored with natural pigments of choice. This paint style is eco-friendly and a great way to add dimension and luxury to your next redesign.

Styles phase in and out but one thing we can say for certain is that these wall treatments have taken home design to the next level. We are so excited to see how people choose to level up their spaces next!

Candles bring the warm and relaxing atmosphere that is synonymous will fall, are super fun to make, and you can also give them to your friends and family as a gift to let them know that you are thinking about them.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED INSTRUCTIONS

Wax Flakes

Candle Wick

Candle Container

Your Favorite Fragrances, Essential Oils, and Colorings (make sure they are candle-safe)

Thermometer

Glass Measuring Cup

Heating Source (Stove, Microwave)

Melting Pot

Popsicle Stick, Chopstick, or Pencil

Clothespin

A Workplace Protected with Paper Towels, or Newspapers

1. Begin by gathering your materials and protecting your workspace with paper towels or newspapers.

2. Find how much wax can fit into your container, fill your candle with wax flakes, and once full, pour the flakes into your glass measuring cup, then repeat one more time so there are two containers worth of wax flakes in your glass measuring cup.

3. Fill your pot with water, then place it on the heating source of your choice. If microwaving: microwave for 1 minute, stir, then repeat.

4. Heat water to ~ 180 degrees Fahrenheit, place a glass measuring cup into the water, then it is time to get creative! Mix the essential oils, colorings, and fragrances you desire, and stir until the mixture turns into liquid.

5. Place your popsicle stick, chopstick, or pencil on the top of your container.

6. Use the clothespin to bind the wick to the top of your popsicle stick, chopstick, or pencil, and make sure your wick hangs and falls to the bottom of your container.

7. Pour your liquid wax into your container, and make sure there is ample space above the liquid for your wick to stay.

8. Wait for the wax to cool, if you would like to place any extra decorations into your candle, now would be the time!

9. Once your wax is cooled, cut the wick with scissors to however long you would like, and place any toppings you would like for extra decoration!

Your candle is now made! The possibilities are endless for creations you can make, not only in terms of fragrance and color, but container type, decoration, and toppings as well!

INGREDIENTS:

1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil

1 1/2 c. sliced cremini mushrooms

3 c. packed baby spinach

8 large eggs

3/4 c. nonfat cottage cheese

1/2 tsp. cracked black pepper

1/4 c. shredded Swiss cheese

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly coat a 12-cup silicone muffin pan with cooking spray; place on top of a large rimmed baking sheet.

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add mushrooms; cook, stirring occasionally, until browned, 6 to 8 minutes. Add spinach; cook, stirring often, until wilted, about 1 minute. Stir in 1/4 teaspoon salt. Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes.

Transfer the spinach mixture to a food processor; pulse until the vegetables are very finely chopped. Divide the mixture evenly among the prepared muffin cups, about 1 tablespoon each. Wipe the food processor clean.

Add eggs, cottage cheese, pepper and the remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt to the food processor. Process on medium speed until smooth, about 20 seconds. Add Swiss cheese and pulse a few more times to incorporate. Divide the mixture among the muffin cups, a scant 1/4 cup each.

4 large eggs

1/4 c. chickpea flour

1 1/2 c. almond flour

1 c. finely chopped broccoli florets from lightly steamed broccoli

DIRECTIONS:

Heat your oven to 400°F. Line 9 muffin tins with parchment muffin liners, or squares of parchment paper.

If you don't already have steamed broccoli on hand, start by lightly steaming some broccoli florets and stems. Rinse in cold water, squeeze out the moisture with a clean kitchen towel, and finely chop the broccoli. You should have 1 cup of chopped broccoli for this recipe.

In a large bowl, whisk together 1 cup cottage cheese, 4 eggs, and ¼ cup milk.

Add ¼ cup chickpea flour, 1 ½ cups almond meal, and 1 teaspoon baking power and mix well. Now add ½ cup of grated cheddar cheese, and 1 cup finely chopped steamed broccoli florets.

Spoon into 9 prepared muffin cups. Sprinkle the tops the muffins with remaining ¼ cup of cheese.

Set in the oven and bake for 25 - 30 minutes, until the tops are golden and puffy. Remove from the oven and cool on a wire rack.

IF YOU’RE CONSIDERING BUYING A HOME

If you’re thinking of buying a home, chances are you’re paying attention to just about everything you hear about the housing market. And you’re getting your information from a variety of channels: the news, social media, your real estate agent, conversations with friends and loved ones, overhearing someone chatting at the local supermarket, the list goes on and on. Most likely, home prices and mortgage rates are coming up a lot.

To help cut through the noise and give you the information you need most, take a look at what the data says. Here are the top two questions you need to ask yourself about home prices and mortgage rates as you make your decision:

1. WHERE DO I THINK HOME PRICES ARE HEADING?

One reliable place you can turn to for that information is the Home Price Expectation Survey from Pulsenomics – a survey of a national panel of over one hundred economists, real estate experts, and investment and market strategists.

According to the latest release, the experts surveyed are projecting slight depreciation this year (see the red in the graph below). But here’s the context you need most. The worst home price declines are already behind us, and prices are actually appreciating again in many markets. Not to mention, the small 0.37% depreciation HPES is showing for 2023 is far from the crash some people originally said would happen.

Now, let’s look to the future. The green in the graph below shows prices have turned a corner and are expected to appreciate in 2024 and beyond. After this year, the HPES is forecasting home price appreciation returning to more normal levels for the next several years.

So, why does this matter to you? It means your home will likely grow in value and you should gain home equity in the years ahead, but only if you buy now. If you wait, based on these forecasts, the home will only cost you more later on.

2. WHERE DO I THINK MORTGAGE RATES ARE HEADING?

Over the past year, mortgage rates have risen in response to economic uncertainty, inflation, and more. We know based on the latest reports that inflation, while still high, has moderated from its peak. This is an encouraging sign for the market and for mortgage rates. Here’s why.

When inflation cools, mortgage rates generally fall in response. This may be why some experts are saying mortgage rates will pull back slightly over the next few quarters and settle somewhere around roughly 5.5 and 6% on average.

But, not even the experts can say with absolute certainty where mortgage rates will be next year or even next month. That’s because there are so many factors that can impact what happens. So, to give you a lens into the various possible outcomes, here’s what you should consider:
