As the temperatures dip, it’s the perfect time to embrace the unique charm of winter while staying warm and stylish. From timeless staples to trendy pieces, the right winter accessories can elevate your cold-weather wardrobe and keep you cozy all season long. Here’s a roundup of the musthave accessories to help you stay warm, stylish, and ready for anything winter throws your way!
A chunky knit scarf is a winter essential that never goes out of style. Opt for neutral tones like cream, grey, or black for ultimate versatility, or go bold with vibrant colors or patterns to make a statement. Wool and cashmere materials will keep you warm without sacrificing comfort, adding both style and practicality to your winter wardrobe.
Keep your head warm while elevating your look with beanies or berets. Beanies are perfect for casual outings or outdoor adventures, while berets offer a more refined, sophisticated vibe. Choose wool or fleece-lined options for added insulation and comfort. Whether you're out running errands or enjoying a snowy stroll, these headpieces will keep you cozy and stylish.
Mittens are making a stylish comeback as a chic alternative to gloves. For a fun, playful twist, look for mittens with faux fur accents, intricate patterns, or bright colors. Not only do they keep your hands warm, but they add a unique touch to your winter look, giving you an extra boost of personality during the coldest months.
While coats are more of a wardrobe staple than an accessory, they certainly define your winter style. Choose a statement coat with unique features like oversized buttons, a flattering belt, or faux fur trim for added flair. Neutral colors like camel, navy, and grey are timeless, but don’t be afraid to embrace bold shades to add a little brightness to those dreary winter days.
For those who aren’t fans of hats, ear warmers and headbands are the perfect alternatives. These pieces keep your ears toasty without ruining your hairstyle. Choose fleece-lined or knitted designs for maximum warmth, and enjoy the cozy, fashionable protection from the cold.
Cold feet can quickly spoil your day, so invest in thermal or wool socks to ensure warmth and comfort all day long. These socks are designed to wick away moisture, keeping your feet dry and cozy. Pair them with ankle or knee-high boots for a stylish winter look that’s as functional as it is fashionable.
Winter footwear is all about balancing warmth, style, and traction. Insulated boots with water-resistant exteriors and plush linings will keep your feet warm and dry, even in the snowiest conditions. Look for boots with sturdy soles to help you navigate icy sidewalks and snowy streets safely, all while looking chic.
Gone are the days of freezing your fingers just to send a text or check your notifications. Tech-friendly gloves, equipped with touchscreencompatible fingertips, allow you to stay connected without taking off your gloves. Opt for water-resistant materials if you plan to brave the snow, ensuring your hands stay warm and dry no matter the conditions.
The oversized blanket scarf is the ultimate combination of fashion and function. These scarves can be worn as a traditional accessory, draped over your shoulders, or even wrapped around you like a cozy blanket on the coldest days. Look for soft fabrics like cashmere or fleece in plaid or solid patterns and enjoy the comfort and warmth this accessory provides.
On particularly cold days, portable hand warmers can be your best friend. Whether disposable or rechargeable, these small, lightweight warmers can easily slip into your pockets, providing on-the-go warmth. Keep them handy during outdoor activities, or pop one into your gloves for extra warmth on the coldest days.
When selecting winter accessories, prioritize high-quality materials like wool, fleece, and cashmere to ensure durability and warmth. Additionally, keep an eye out for heated electronic accessories—scarves, gloves, and boots that provide extra warmth—perfect for those extra-chilly days. Don’t hesitate to experiment with different textures, colors, and patterns to express your personal style this winter. With these cozy accessories, every snowy day will feel like a runway!

Spring is around the corner and your home needs a touch up. The winter snow prevents many of us from being able to maintain the constant upkeep your home requires. To get your home ready for the spring, we suggest following these helpful tips that will prepare, restore, and maintain your home to its fullest potential!
The long winter can do a lot of damage to the outer part of your home. With snow covering the exterior, even basic maintenance can be difficult to accomplish and many chores are pushed off until the spring. To ensure your home is well maintained (for the spring season to come), you’ll want to clean your gutters, inspect and repair roof shingles, wash and reseal your windows, and tidy up your outdoor furniture by cleaning and removing debris.
With the spring air being filled with pollen and other dust particles, it’s important to clean out your air filters to prevent it from coming into your home. In accordance with this,
you should also be sure to dust and vacuum your air vents. You’ll also want to test your smoke detectors and declutter the inside of your home, getting rid of old winter gear and getting a head start on your spring cleaning.
Maintaining common household appliances will get your home ready for the seasonal changes ahead. With the weather getting warmer, it is recommended to have your air conditioning unit serviced so that it runs in tip top condition. You will also want to clean out the dryer vent on your drying machine to remove lint build up and prevent potential fire hazards.
After a cold, wet winter you'll want to ensure the foundation of your home is stable and up to par. Have a professional look at the foundation of your walls for cracks and signs of moisture. This will let you know if resealing is something that needs to be done. If you have a basement, look for potential water damage that may have been left behind from any snow that may have seeped through.
Now that the essentials are taken care of, it’s finally time to work on the cosmetics of your home. This includes landscaping, cleaning, and repainting of the property to make it look as pristine as the day it was built. Trim the bushes, pull the weeds, cut the trees, and plant some refreshing flowers to bloom in the spring.
By following these steps, your home will be well-prepared for the upcoming spring season! Your home requires constant maintenance and staying on top of it will save you a ton of money in the long run!
What challenges in the financial industry for women did you see that made you want to start Svvy®?
My sister and I launched Svvy® driven by a profound realization: the financial world often fails to protect women. Time and again, we saw women—friends, family, and clients—fall prey to predatory investment sales tactics. These weren’t just numbers on a spreadsheet; they were life savings, dreams, and futures wiped out by the sector's high-commission culture.
The impact hit close to home, fueling our determination to disrupt the status quo. We envisioned a platform where women could take charge of their financial decisions without fear of manipulation, deceit, or pressure. Svvy® was born from this vision—a secure space where women can feel confident, empowered, and fully in control of their financial futures.
Our mission is bigger than finance; it’s about positively changing lives and ensuring that no woman faces these challenges alone. Together, we’re revolutionizing the industry— one informed, empowered decision at a time.
How do you believe financial advice for women differs from advice for men, and how does your website address this?
Financial advice for women often requires a more personalized and trust-focused approach compared to men. Women frequently seek a deeper connection with their financial advisors, valuing honesty, trustworthiness, and open communication.
Svvy® addresses these nuances by thoroughly vetting advisors to ensure they deliver equitable, high-quality service, and ensure they are equipped to provide the trustworthy professional guidance women deserve. Getting
In an industry historically dominated by men, women have long faced unique challenges in securing trustworthy financial advice. Recognizing this gap, Geneva Financial Branch Manager Jenna Biancavilla and her sister Svvy®, a platform designed to empower women in managing their financial futures. In this interview, we dive into the motivations behind Svvy®’s creation, the challenges faced by women in finance, and the innovative approach the platform takes to ensure that women receive the respect, trust, and personalized guidance they deserve.
started is easy, women can take a short, simple quiz on our site and be matched— for free—with advisors who understand their unique needs.
What kind of financial content does Svvy® advise on?
Svvy® is redefining how women connect with trusted financial advisors. While we don’t provide direct financial advice, we empower women by offering educational content and doing the heavy lifting of vetting financial professionals. Our platform simplifies the often-daunting process of finding a trustworthy advisor, ensuring our users feel supported every step of the way.
As a women-founded platform, we’re committed to uplifting women at every level. That’s why we exclusively hire US-based female interviewers to thoroughly vet advisors before they’re approved to join the Svvy® network. This meticulous process guarantees that the advisors we recommend align with our mission of trust, transparency, and empowerment.
The women who trust Svvy® are busy professionals, caretakers, moms, and entrepreneurs who value having a reliable partner in their financial journey. By connecting them with pre-screened, dependable advisors, we enable them to confidently jumpstart the next phase of their financial future—with ease and peace of mind.
Who is your primary target audience on the website? Are you focused on any specific age groups or financial stages?
Our primary audience includes women who are actively navigating significant financial decisions and have the resources to benefit from professional financial guidance. This includes women who are new to investing and those who have experienced life changes such as a career change, birth of a child, divorce, nearing retirement, loss of a loved one, or inheritance. Women also use the Svvy® platform when looking to transition to a new financial advisor to guide them through the next phase of their financial journey. While we aim to support women at various stages of their financial lives, our current focus is on serving those who are ready to take an active role in growing their wealth.
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when creating this website?
Building a custom web-app matching algorithm is an exciting yet complex journey. One of our biggest challenges was finding the right people and partners to bring our vision to life. We initially tried working with contractors and remote teams but quickly realized that Svvy® needed a passionate, dedicated team with whom we could build strong relationships, share a unified vision, and grow together.
This realization led us to refocus our strategy on assembling a core team locally in Phoenix, Arizona including individuals who truly understand and value our mission. This shift enabled closer collaboration and resulted in partners who are as deeply invested in Svvy’s success as we are.
How do you handle skepticism from people who might feel that financial advice should be generalized rather than gender-specific?
At Svvy®, we believe financial advice should be equal and customized for everyone, but we recognize that women have historically been underserved and often face unique challenges in this space. That’s why we’re passionate about ensuring women receive the attention, respect, and trustworthy advice they deserve. Our platform connects women with advisors who prioritize their client’s best interests, building honest, personalized, and ethical relationships— empowering women to make confident financial decisions with the support they need every step of the way.
What is one piece of financial advice you think every woman should hear, regardless of her background or financial knowledge?
As women, our instinct to seek guidance and feedback is one of our superpowers, not a weakness. Whether you're
just beginning your financial journey or you’re facing the most significant financial challenge yet, you deserve the support of an ally who genuinely cares about your goals and is invested in your success.
What role do you believe financial literacy plays in women’s empowerment?
Empowerment doesn’t begin with mastering financial literacy—it starts the moment you step off the sidelines and take an active role in your financial journey. Like any skill, financial literacy develops gradually through learning, practice, and meaningful conversations. Taking that first step—whether it’s seeking advice, opening a dialogue, or partnering with someone you trust—is a bold act of courage and self-care.
It’s not about having all the answers from the start; it’s about trusting yourself to begin. Each small step you take builds confidence, independence, and momentum, bringing you closer to the financial future you envision. Empowerment isn’t about a final destination—it’s about showing up for the journey and believing in your ability to grow and succeed
How do you envision the future of financial advice for women? What trends do you see shaping this space?
With the Great Wealth Transfer to Women already underway, we’re seeing a significant shift in financial dynamics. By 2030, women are projected to control $30 trillion in financial assets.
As women take on more financial power, their expectations for financial professionals are also evolving. We see a growing demand for better service, transparency, personalized guidance, and respectful, informative conversations.
Our mission is to revolutionize the financial sector and eliminate predatory sales practices by empowering women with the knowledge to make informed financial decisions. We look forward to partnering with other institutions and adopting new technology to disrupt the old commission-focused tactics and pave a new standard.
Additionally, our plans include expanding our expert base beyond advisors to include other professionals such as mortgage loan originators, insurance agents, CPAs, real-estate professionals, lawyers, and more. Our focus will remain on providing women with a safe and supportive space to connect with professionals who genuinely want to help them succeed. The wealth transfer to women presents an incredible opportunity, and we’re excited to play a part in shaping this new era of financial empowerment.
As the financial landscape continues to evolve, Svvy® remains at the forefront of this shift, committed to providing women with the tools, resources, and support they need to make confident financial decisions. With a clear focus on empowerment, transparency, and education, Svvy® is helping to shape a future where women are not only financially literate but also fully in control of their financial destinies.

DESIGN/DIY
As the days grow shorter and the temperature drops, winter brings with it the perfect opportunity to refresh your home with cozy, inviting decor. 2025 winter trends in home decor reflect a shift toward sustainable, minimalist, and highly personalized spaces that balance warmth with elegance. With a focus on comfort, natural materials, and playful yet calming color palettes, this year’s trends are designed to make your home feel like a tranquil retreat from the cold. Here’s a look at the top decor trends to embrace this winter season:
1. Warm Earth Tones: Nature's Comfort Indoors
While winter typically evokes thoughts of crisp whites and icy blues, 2025 is ushering in a more grounded, earthy color palette. Warm earth tones, such as deep terracotta, mustard yellows, forest greens, and rich browns, are taking over living rooms, bedrooms, and even kitchens. These tones are designed to create an inviting atmosphere that contrasts with the cold, helping to bring nature indoors.
According to Pantone Color Institute, warm, earthy hues have been making waves across various design fields, offering both comfort and depth in interior spaces. These colors provide a soothing backdrop for winter gatherings and allow for more personalized, intimate spaces.
Pro Tip: Combine earthy tones with natural textures like wool throws, linen cushions, and wood accents for a truly cozy vibe.
2. Sustainable and Eco-Conscious Decor
With an increasing awareness of environmental impact, sustainability has become a driving force in 2025’s winter decor. Consumers are choosing furniture and accessories made from recycled, upcycled, and organic materials. This includes reclaimed wood furniture, upcycled glassware, and textiles crafted from sustainable sources like hemp, bamboo, and organic cotton.
Eco-friendly decor isn’t just about materials, but also the longevity of the items. The rise of investment in timeless, durable pieces that don’t go out of style is part of this trend. Focusing on pieces that can be passed down or repurposed over time reflects a more thoughtful and sustainable approach to winter decorating.
Pro Tip: Look for candles made from soy or beeswax and eco-friendly wall art crafted from recycled materials to infuse your home with a sustainable glow.
3. Textural Contrast: Layering for Coziness
As we head into the chillier months, textures become a crucial element of winter decor. Layering different materials adds visual interest and tactile comfort to your living spaces. The trend of mixing contrasting textures—such as velvet, shearling, wool, and leather—continues to grow in popularity.
Incorporating tactile fabrics like velvety throw pillows, soft wool blankets, and fluffy shearling cushions on chairs or sofas creates an indulgent, layered feel. These textures not only enhance the cozy factor but also add a sense of luxury to your home’s winter aesthetic.
Pro Tip: Don't shy away from mixing unexpected materials. A plush velvet sofa paired with a rugged wooden coffee table or a wool throw on a leather armchair can create a stylish and cozy combination.
4. Statement Lighting: Illuminating the Dark
With longer nights, lighting becomes an integral part of winter decor. In 2025, statement lighting fixtures that make an impression while creating an ambient, warm glow are all the rage. Think oversized chandeliers, sculptural pendant lights, and sleek, minimalist lamps that create dramatic focal points.
Soft, warm lighting that mimics natural light will help combat the winter blues and set a calming mood throughout the home. LED candles, Edison bulbs, and dimmable fixtures allow for versatility and control over the ambiance in various spaces.
Pro Tip: Layer multiple sources of light in each room to create warmth and depth— try a combination of floor lamps, table lamps, and overhead lighting to enhance the atmosphere.
5. Winter Botanicals and Greenery
While winter months can feel barren, 2025’s winter decor celebrates the beauty of life in the coldest months. Indoor plants and greenery are gaining popularity, with choices like evergreen branches, potted houseplants, and succulents making their way into homes. These winter botanicals not only add color and life to your home but can also help purify the air, contributing to a healthier indoor environment.
Incorporating real or artificial plants in your decor allows you to maintain a connection to nature even as the outdoor world remains dormant. Potted plants in beautiful, textured pots can be a perfect addition to window sills, coffee tables, or entryways.
Pro Tip: Opt for plants like the snake plant or peace lily, known for their hardiness and ability to thrive indoors, even in low light conditions.
The minimalist aesthetic continues to thrive in 2025, with an emphasis on functionality and simplicity. Modular furniture pieces that can be easily rearranged are ideal for creating adaptable spaces for winter. Think of versatile couches that can be rearranged, foldable dining tables, or multifunctional storage units that reduce clutter and optimize space.
This trend also extends to the use of minimalist designs in cabinetry and shelving—sleek, uncluttered designs that blend seamlessly with the home’s architecture, giving a nod to Scandinavian simplicity. The focus is on creating serene, unpretentious environments that allow for relaxation and contemplation during the colder months.
Pro Tip: Choose furniture that offers both form and function—consider modular sofas, stackable side tables, and storagefriendly seating to create a flexible and peaceful living environment.
Another trend sweeping winter decor in 2025 is the use of warm metals, including brushed gold, copper, and brass. These reflective surfaces add a bit of sparkle and shine to an otherwise muted color palette. Whether used in lighting fixtures, mirrors, or small decorative accents, warm metals bring a sophisticated touch to winter spaces.
Unlike the cool silvers of the past, these metals provide a sense of warmth that complements the season’s earth-toned palette. Whether integrated into furniture details, accents, or as large statement pieces, they create a welcoming environment that's both chic and functional.
Pro Tip: Consider investing in statement metal pieces like a gold-framed mirror, brass candlesticks, or copper planters for a stylish touch.
Winter 2025 home decor trends blend comfort with creativity, creating spaces that invite relaxation while providing opportunities for self-expression. From embracing warm, earthy colors and sustainable practices to incorporating cozy textures and statement lighting, these trends reflect a growing desire for homes that are both beautiful and functional. So, as the chill sets in, embrace the season with thoughtful and stylish decor choices that will warm your home and spirit all winter long.
Here’s what you’ll need to create your bath bombs:
• Baking soda (1 cup): The base for that satisfying fizz.
• Citric acid (1/2 cup): Activates the fizzing reaction.
• Cornstarch (1/2 cup): Creates a silky texture and slows the fizz for a relaxing soak.
• Epsom salt (1/2 cup): Soothes sore muscles and enhances relaxation.
• Carrier oil (2 tbsp): Coconut oil, almond oil, or jojoba oil for skin nourishment.
• Essential oils (10-15 drops): Add calming, invigorating, or energizing scents.
• Food or natural coloring (optional): Create vibrant, colorful bombs.
• Witch hazel or water (1-2 tsp): Binds the mixture together.
Transform your bath time into a luxurious, spa-like experience with homemade bath bombs! These fizzy delights are easy to make and allow for endless creativity in scents, colors, and added benefits. Whether you’re treating yourself or crafting gifts for loved ones, DIY bath bombs are a rewarding project that everyone will enjoy.
Store-bought bath bombs can be pricey and often contain synthetic ingredients. By making your own, you can:
• Customize scents and colors.
• Use skin-friendly, natural ingredients.
• Save money while enjoying a creative craft.
• A large mixing bowl
• A whisk or spoon
• Measuring cups and spoons
• Molds (bath bomb molds, silicone molds, or muffin tins)
• Spray bottle (for even moisture application)
1. Prep Your Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the baking soda, citric acid, cornstarch, and Epsom salt. Whisk thoroughly to ensure there are no lumps.
2. Blend the Wet Ingredients
In a small bowl, mix the carrier oil, essential oils, and food coloring (if using). Stir well to combine.
3. Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures
Slowly pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture, whisking constantly. The texture should resemble damp sand—moist enough to hold its shape when pressed. If it feels too dry, lightly mist the mixture with witch hazel using a spray bottle, mixing as you go.
4. Mold the Mixture
Pack the mixture tightly into your molds, pressing firmly to ensure a solid shape. If using a round mold, slightly overfill each half before pressing them together. Remove any excess around the edges.
5. Let Dry
Allow your bath bombs to dry in the molds for at least 24 hours. Once hardened, carefully remove them from the molds and let them air-dry for an additional 24 hours.
• Soothing Add-Ins: Add dried herbs or flowers like chamomile, rose petals, or lavender for a luxurious touch.
• Colors and Patterns: Layer different colors for a striped effect or swirl colors for a marbled design.
• Skin Boosters: Add a teaspoon of shea butter or a pinch of oatmeal for added skin hydration.
Tips for Success
• Work quickly when combining ingredients to prevent premature fizzing.
• Use gloves if working with vibrant colors to avoid staining your hands.
• Store bath bombs in an airtight container to maintain their fizz.
To use your handmade bath bombs, simply drop one into warm bathwater and watch it fizz, releasing its delightful aroma and nourishing ingredients. Light some candles, grab a book, and enjoy the ultimate relaxation experience.
DIY bath bombs are more than just a craft—they’re a way to bring a little extra joy and self-care into your day. Happy crafting!
Winter is a time of cozy gatherings, peaceful nights by the fire, and the festive spirit of the holidays. As days grow shorter and temperatures drop, there’s no better way to set the tone for the season than by infusing your home with warm, inviting fragrances. Winter scents not only evoke a sense of comfort but also enhance the magic of the season. Here’s how you can fill your home with the best winter fragrances, making it feel like a winter wonderland indoors.
Winter is synonymous with warmth and coziness, so start by choosing fragrances that make you feel snug and at home. Smells like cinnamon, clove, and vanilla are timeless winter scents that will remind you of winter's past and happy holiday memories. You can also utiliza scents like gingerbread, sugar cookies, and bread to give your home the sweet smell of baked goods!
The holiday season brings with it a whole range of scents that are synonymous with celebration and cheer. Fragrances like pine and fur will delight your guests and make your home feel like you’re outdoors, taking in the nature around you. Other scents like mulled wine are often associated with winter gatherings. Combined with the proper spices, your home will be filled with the warm, spicy scent.
Woodsy scents are perfect for creating a cozy, inviting environment that feels grounded and peaceful. Cedarwood and sandalwood provide rich, earthy scents and add a sense of elegance to your winter decor. The crackle of the fireplace invokes winter memories. The crackling fireplace evokes warm winter memories.
Winter fruits often bring out the essence of the season’s festivities. Their sweet and tart aromas can blend beautifully with the richer, warmer spices of winter. Citrusy scents like orange, lemon, and grapefruit create an uplifting aroma and bring brightness to the cold winter days. Fruits like cranberry and pomegranate are also festive to the season, making them a perfect fit for winter decor!
If you’re looking to get creative and craft your own signature winter fragrance, try DIY options to infuse your home. Simmer pots let you choose your own winter scents, making your own personal aroma. You can also blend your own essential oils. Using scents like frankincense, pine, cinnamon, can be combined with peppermint and eucalyptus for a crisp, refreshing atmosphere.
Winter fragrances are an easy way to infuse your home with warmth, comfort, and festivity during the colder months. Whether you prefer the spicy, cozy aromas or fresh and woody, there’s a fragrance for every winter occasion!
Blankets are more than just functional items, they’re a cozy expression of your personal style, a source of warmth, and a perfect project for DIY enthusiasts. Whether you're looking to create a thoughtful gift, add a personal touch to your living space, or unwind with a relaxing craft, making your own knitted or crocheted blanket is the perfect beginner-friendly project. Here’s how to get started!
Before you begin, gather the following basic supplies:
• Yarn: For beginners, we recommend bulky or super bulky yarns because they are thicker and easier to work with. Choose a soft yarn that suits your personal style. Acrylic yarn is a great, budget-friendly option, but cotton, wool, or a blend can also work well.
• Needles or Hook: If you're knitting, you’ll need knitting needles that correspond to the thickness of your yarn. For crochet, a large crochet hook (size H-8 or larger) will work best for thick yarn.
• Scissors: For cutting your yarn at the end.
• Tapestry Needle: To weave in the ends once you're done.
Before diving into the “how-to,” let’s talk about the benefits of making your own blanket. Not only do handmade blankets provide a sense of accomplishment, but they also allow for complete control over color, texture, and design. Plus, working with yarn is a soothing, stress-relieving activity. Whether you prefer knitting or crocheting, both methods result in beautiful, functional pieces that will keep you warm throughout the year.
Knitting or Crocheting? Both methods result in beautiful blankets, but they each offer a unique experience. If you’re new to both, knitting may feel more intuitive with its back-and-forth motions, while crocheting offers more freedom in the way the stitches are formed.
• Knitting: Involves creating interlocking loops of yarn on two needles The technique is often faster and produces a more uniform, stretchable fabric.
• Crocheting: Uses a single hook to make loops, resulting in a fabric that is often thicker and more textured than knitting.
For this beginner project, we’ll break down both techniques to make your decision easier.
Step
Knitting: The Garter Stitch
The garter stitch is the perfect choice for beginners, as it’s one of the simplest and most straightforward patterns in knitting. To create a garter stitch, all you need to do is knit every row. The result will be a soft, textured fabric that is perfect for blankets.
How to Knit the Garter Stitch:
1. Cast on an even number of stitches (about 30-40 stitches for a small lap blanket).
2. Knit every row (K1 in every stitch across).
3. Once you reach your desired length (typically between 40-60 inches), bind off.
For crochet, the double crochet stitch is the easiest and most common stitch used for blankets. It’s slightly taller than single crochet, which makes it a great option for a thicker, faster blanket.
How to Crochet the Basic Double Crochet:
1. Start with a foundation chain (about 60-80 chains for a small throw blanket).
2. Yarn over and insert your hook into the 4th chain from the hook.
3. Yarn over again and pull through (3 loops on the hook).
4. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops.
5. Yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops.
6. Repeat the process across the row.
7. Turn your work and crochet in rows, adding a double crochet stitch into each stitch from the previous row.
Repeat this process until your blanket reaches your desired size.
Once you’ve mastered the garter stitch, it’s all about consistency. Keep knitting each row and check your work frequently to make sure you’re staying on track. When you’re ready to change colors, simply add in the new color of yarn and continue knitting in the same way. To finish, bind off your stitches, and use your tapestry needle to weave in any loose ends.
Crocheting Your Blanket:
If you’re crocheting, keep going row by row, always adding double crochet stitches into each stitch from the previous row. Don’t worry about perfection, crochet blankets often have a slightly organic feel, which is part of their charm. To finish, simply cut your yarn and weave in the ends with your tapestry needle.
Once your blanket is completed, it’s time to add any personal touches that reflect your style! Consider these options:
• Fringed Edges: Add a fringe border by cutting yarn into small pieces and tying them through each stitch along the edge of your blanket.
• Color Blocks: Add stripes or blocks of color for a modern, geometric look. Change colors as you go or use a gradient effect for a more subtle, ombre design.
• Embroidery: Personalize your blanket by stitching small designs, initials, or patterns in one corner using a contrasting color of yarn.
Once your blanket is finished, you can’t help but feel proud of your creation. These blankets can serve as cozy additions to your living room, an elegant touch to your bed, or a thoughtful gift for a loved one. There's nothing more satisfying than cuddling up with a blanket that you made with your own hands, knowing that each stitch is infused with care and creativity.
• Choose the Right Yarn: Experiment with different types of yarn to see what feels best for you. Bulky yarn works well for beginners, but once you gain confidence, you can try lighter weight options like worsted or DK yarn for a more delicate feel.
• Practice Your Tension: In crochet and knitting, it’s important to keep your tension even. If your stitches are too tight, your blanket might turn out stiff. If they’re too loose, it could result in a floppy, uneven fabric.
• Use Stitch Markers: If you're new to crochet or knitting, stitch markers can help you keep track of your rows and stitches.
Knitted and crocheted blankets are the perfect DIY project for beginners who want to add a cozy, personalized touch to their home. Whether you're knitting in a simple garter stitch or crocheting with double crochet, the process is all about enjoying the craft and creating something special. So gather your supplies, pick up your needles or hook, and embrace the chill with your very own handmade blanket.
Author: Kathy Colkitt
In the face of immense personal tragedy, some find strength not only to heal but to become a force for change. Kathy Keppel-Colkitt, a Branch Manager at Geneva Financial, embodies that resilience and determination. Following the heartbreaking loss of her daughter, Brandi, to cancer—a loss that could have been prevented—Kathy turned her grief into action, advocating for greater awareness, education, and systemic improvements in the medical field.
Brandi's battle with cancer began with optimism. With a 95% cure rate for her specific diagnosis, hope was high. However, what should have been a journey to recovery turned into a devastating experience due to systemic failures, lack of proper communication, and the complexity of navigating medical care. Determined that no other family should endure the same heartache, Kathy authored Will They Hear Me Now?, a deeply personal and powerful book that sheds light on the cracks in the healthcare system while providing guidance for others facing similar challenges.
By sharing Brandi’s story, she hopes to spark a movement that empowers individuals to ask the right questions, demand transparency, and push for reforms in patient care.
Beyond her advocacy, Kathy is a respected leader at Geneva Financial. Her ability to lead with empathy and dedication extends beyond her personal mission, she brings the same passion to her work, fostering a culture of care and integrity. Her colleagues and clients alike recognize her as not just a financial professional, but as someone who genuinely invests in the well-being of those around her.
Kathy’s journey is a testament to the power of turning pain into purpose. Through her book, her advocacy, and her leadership, she is making an indelible mark on the world. Her story serves as an inspiration to all, reminding us that even in our darkest moments, we have the ability to ignite change and leave a lasting legacy.
Kathy encourages everyone to become advocates in their own right. Whether by educating themselves on their rights as patients or simply spreading awareness, every effort contributes to a larger wave of transformation.

Don’t let the cold keep you inside! Bundle up in warm layers and dress your pet in a cozy jacket or booties if needed. Explore nearby trails, parks, or neighborhoods to keep both of you moving. Snowy landscapes can turn your usual walk into a brand-new adventure.

Tug-of-War and Indoor Fetch
If outdoor play isn’t an option, bring the fun indoors. A game of tug-of-war with a durable toy provides a workout for your pet and your arms. Alternatively, use a soft indoor ball or frisbee for a safe, engaging game of fetch.
Tip: Use a hallway to keep fetch contained and exciting.
If your pet enjoys the snow, take advantage of it! Build snow mounds for your pet to climb or toss snowballs for them to chase. Larger breeds might enjoy pulling a sled or running alongside you on snowshoes.
Caution: Keep sessions short and monitor for signs of cold stress, such as shivering or paw-lifting.
Engage your pet’s mind and body with interactive toys and puzzles. Treat-dispensing toys, snuffle mats, or hideand-seek games with their favorite toys are perfect for indoor fun.
For You: While your pet tackles their puzzle, fit in a quick workout—try squats, lunges, or planks!
Pet-friendly yoga is a relaxing way to bond with your pet. Incorporate poses that allow your pet to interact, such as downward dog or seated poses where they can snuggle close.
Benefits: Doga helps you both de-stress, improve flexibility, and strengthen your bond.
A treadmill can be a great option for days when it’s too cold outside. Gradually introduce your pet to walking on the treadmill at a slow pace.
Safety First: Supervise your pet and start with short, slow sessions to ensure they’re comfortable.
Many areas have pet-friendly gyms, dog parks, or indoor arenas. These spaces are perfect for frisbee, ball toss, or socializing with other pets while you enjoy your workout.
Turn up the music and dance with your pet! This playful activity will get your heart pumping and provide a fun way to burn calories. Pets, especially dogs, love joining the excitement.
If you’re adventurous and have an active dog, try skijoring (cross-country skiing with your dog pulling) or let them pull a lightweight sled. It’s an exhilarating way to enjoy the snow and give your pet a robust workout.
Considerations: Ensure your dog is the right breed and size for pulling activities and introduce the sport gradually.
• Warm Up and Cool Down: Ease into exercise to warm up your pet’s muscles.
• Stay Hydrated: Cold weather can be dehydrating, so always have water available.
• Watch for Signs of Overexertion: Adjust activities if your pet shows signs of tiredness or discomfort.
• Check Their Paws: Snow, ice, and salt can irritate paws clean them after outdoor play.
Staying active in winter not only strengthens the bond between you and your pet but also helps combat seasonal blues. With these fun workout ideas, you’ll both stay fit, happy, and ready for spring!
As winter rolls in, the cold air and dry indoor heat can quickly dehydrate your skin, leaving it feeling tight, dull, and irritated. To maintain healthy, glowing skin throughout the season, it’s important to adapt your skincare routine to combat the harsher weather conditions. By making a few simple adjustments, you can protect and hydrate your skin, ensuring it stays soft, smooth, and radiant all winter long.
As the weather gets colder, switch to a thicker, cream-based moisturizer to help combat dryness. Look for products with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and shea butter. Applying your moisturizer right after washing your face or showering will help lock in moisture and keep your skin soft and smooth.
Don’t forget to drink plenty of water, even when it’s cold outside. Staying hydrated helps your skin maintain its natural moisture balance. Incorporate hydrating foods like oranges, cucumbers, and soups into your meals to keep your skin healthy from the inside out.
Avoid harsh cleansers that strip your skin of its natural oils. Instead, opt for a gentle, hydrating cleanser that won’t leave your skin feeling tight and dry. Look for formulas that are sulfate-free and contain nourishing ingredients like aloe or glycerin.
Indoor heating can dry out the air, making your skin feel parched. Adding a humidifier to your space helps replenish the air's moisture and prevents your skin from drying out.
Exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells but be careful not to overdo it during the winter. Exfoliate once a week using a gentle scrub or enzymebased exfoliant to keep your skin smooth and allow your moisturizer to absorb more effectively.
Even in winter, UV rays can damage your skin. Snow can reflect the sun's rays, increasing exposure, so don’t skip the sunscreen. Choose a broadspectrum SPF of at least 30 and apply it before heading outside, especially on sunny days.
Lips and hands are particularly vulnerable to the harsh winter conditions. Always keep a hydrating lip balm and hand cream with you. Choose products with nourishing ingredients like beeswax, shea butter, or coconut oil to keep your lips and hands soft.
Hot showers may feel comforting, but they can strip your skin of its natural oils. Opt for lukewarm water instead and limit your shower time to keep your skin hydrated. Afterward, apply your moisturizer immediately to seal in moisture.
What you eat can have a big impact on the health of your skin. Include foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon and walnuts, which help your skin retain moisture. Vitamin-rich foods, such as leafy greens, citrus, and berries, can also support your skin’s health.
Consistency is key to maintaining hydrated, healthy skin in the winter. Stick to your skincare routine, listen to your skin’s needs, and adjust as necessary. With the right care, you can combat dryness and enjoy soft, glowing skin all season long. By following these simple tips, you can ensure your skin stays nourished and protected throughout the colder months. Embrace the winter season with healthy, hydrated skin that looks and feels its best!
We reached out to influential female leaders within our organization to hear their journeys throughout the mortgage industry. Our intention was to gain a better understanding about their experiences in the fight for workplace equality, and to learn about how the industry has changed. We ask that you read this discussion with an open mind, and an open heart, in order to let these stories be told.
What advice would you give to younger women entering the mortgage industry?
"STUDY! Whatever role you choose in the Mortgage Industry, become a master of your profession. Partner with all Team Members. It takes a Village! This industry isn’t physically difficult. The larger your knowledge base, the more success you’ll be able to facilitate."
- Jen Wardrop, Chief Risk Officer
"USE YOUR ASSETS! Do not try to be like the others, be the trusted warm educator with confidence and comfort!! Building your persona and business based on who you want people to see you as, takes time but consistency is KEY! Out of Sight Out of mind!"
- Shawn Muro, Loan Officer
Don’t give up. It can be a roller coaster. That’s just the nature of the industry. But, for any young person, if you come into this business, they need to be prepared for the ride. Make smart financial decisions to “put away for a dry day”. The rainy days are our best days here and it can downpour. It’s when it’s quiet and dry that you must plan for!
- Angela McNeil, Processor
What changes have you witnessed in the mortgage industry with respect to gender diversity, and where do you think improvements are still needed?
"The mortgage industry has made significant strides toward improving opportunities for women. More women are advancing into leadership positions, breaking through traditional barriers and inspiring future generations of female leaders. Flexible work arrangements, remote work options, and improved parental leave policies have helped women better balance their professional and personal lives. Furthermore, women’s achievements are being recognized and celebrated more than ever, increasing their visibility and influence within the industry. While challenges remain, these improvements are helping to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for women in the mortgage industry."
- Adriana Fernandez, Branch Manager
"I have observed a growing presence of women in both operational and management roles. At Geneva Financial, it is particularly encouraging to see that nearly all management positions are held by women. In contrast, at previous companies, such roles were predominantly filled by men. I believe this shift reflects a broader understanding that individuals of any gender are equally capable of excelling in these positions."
- Amanda Herrera, Processor
What does it mean to you to have so many of our top performing branches led by women?
"To me, seeing many of our top-performing branches led by women is a powerful reminder of the value of diverse leadership. It showcases the incredible talent, resilience, and unique perspectives that women bring to their roles. It’s not just about leadership styles but about the innovative approaches and problem-solving skills that these leaders offer. I’m proud of the progress we’ve made, and it reinforces my belief in the importance of empowering diverse voices at every level of our organization. Strong leadership drives success, and our women leaders exemplify this every day."
- Rachel Caple, Chief Sales and Revenue Officer
What does it mean to you to have such a large amount of women in leadershio roles at your company?
“For me, having so many women in leadership at Geneva Financial is a source of deep pride. It shows that we are not just talking about equity—we are living it. Our core value of ‘Be A Good Human’ extends to fostering an environment where talent and leadership aren’t defined by gender, but by the ability to inspire, lead, and make a difference. The women in our leadership team are paving the way for the next generation, proving that the mortgage industry—and the business world as a whole— is evolving for the better."
- Telle’ VanTrojen, COO | Partner
"Women in leadership roles often must navigate expectations about balancing authority and collaboration. From my experience as a Loan Processor and working with leadership teams, I’ve seen women leaders face challenges in gaining equal visibility in decision-making processes. Building strong networks and allies within the company can help overcome these obstacles."
-
Amanda Herrera, Processor
"As with any career, as women, to be respected, oftentimes we do have to work harder to show that we are capable of doing the same role a man can do. Our industry has people working from ages 18 all the way up to 80 plus so we have a lot of different stereotypes that have been ingrained in the different generations so that in itself is a challenge."
- Sheena Behrens, LOA
What steps can companies take to create a more inclusive environment for women in the mortgage industry?
"Mortgage companies can create a more inclusive environment for women by implementing leadership development programs and promoting equal opportunity policies. Offering flexible work arrangements and parental leave supports work-life balance. Companies should provide safe spaces for addressing concerns, celebrate women’s achievements, and ensure transparency in career advancement opportunities. Inclusive networking events and mentorship programs can further empower women, driving diversity and innovation within the industry."
-
Adriana Fernandez, Branch Manager
"Companies should ensure that roles are recognized as critical stepping stones to leadership. Offering professional development opportunities, creating mentorship programs, and promoting them from within are essential steps. Additionally, fostering a culture that values and celebrates diverse leadership styles can make the industry more inclusive."
- Amanda Herrera, Processor
Praise diversity. I love how Geneva Financial is about humans and represents just being a good human regardless of gender, race or culture. It’s so important for diversity at all levels. A company should provide remote work or flexible hours for those women that are balancing work and caregiving to kids or family members. Fair pay to all roles regardless of gender. Highlight the accomplishments of women to help inspire other women.
- Jeanine Robbins, Loan Officer
What is one change you would like to see in the mortgage industry that would help women advance in their careers?
"It is essential to recognize that every role within the industry contributes to the smooth progression of the process. However, I have observed that, at times, only certain roles seem to be acknowledged as truly significant. For women entering the industry, this lack of recognition can make it difficult to determine if the field is a good fit, often leading to feelings of undervaluation. It is crucial to understand that the success of a company relies on the collaborative effort of all departments. Unfortunately, this perspective is not always apparent to those who are new to the industry, and it often takes years of experience to fully appreciate the importance of every role."
-
Amanda Herrera, Processor
"One change I would like to see for women in the mortgage industry is the recognition that women are natural leaders in the mortgage industry and it doesn’t have to be a male dominated. Women are equally capable as men and when we work together, we can drive innovation, improve the industry and achieve greater success. Proving that leadership isn’t about gender but about our skill, vision and dedication to the mortgage industry."
- Adriana Fernandez, Branch Manager
Has gender played a role in your career progression within the mortgage industry?
"Starting in the mortgage industry at just 25 years old and as a woman in a male-driven field was far from easy. On top of that, I was quickly thrust into a leadership role, running a mortgage lender for 12 successful years. It was a steep challenge—being new to the industry and needing to prove myself not only as a professional but also as a leader. However, those experiences taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of building confidence in myself. I’m proud of the success I achieved despite the obstacles, and it shaped me into the strong professional I am today."
- Adriana Fernandez, Branch Manager
"During my experience, I observed a clear distinction between roles traditionally held by women and those typically occupied by men. For instance, it was uncommon to see women in positions such as loan officers, let alone branch managers overseeing teams of loan officers. However, I have begun to witness a positive shift, with more women entering roles that were historically dominated by men."
- Amanda Herrera, Processor
"Absolutely. Historically, the mortgage industry has been male dominated. As a woman, I felt I needed to prove my expertise and competence and be more assertive. And especially again, it was easier for the men to stay late and work those hours than it was for me as a Mom. There were times that I was more knowledgeable or competent and I felt like I was surrounded by the “good ole” boys club."
- Jeanine Robbins, Loan Officer
Have you encountered any biases or stereotypes in your role, and how did you address them?
"I’ve had a client couple actually question everything about their loan and what was needed on their approval and had to get a male loan officer’s opinion in order to believe me. Because their buyer’s agent is actually a friend of mine, I found out that they didn’t trust me because I was black and a woman. So yes, doubts about my expertise, knowledge and experience based on the fact that I was a woman. The best part is that I finished the loan and still got paid because money is green and they will always be ignorant. And I have a lot of patience in this business so I try not to let it affect me."
- Jeanine Robbins, Loan Officer
"Yes. I do believe because every company has different job descriptions for a loan officer assistant, a lot of times LOs assume that it’s more of a data entry position but I will say once they know I can set up a loan, price, etc their demeanor changes. I am not one to brag of what I can do… I will show you what I can do and then we can go from there."
- Sheena Behrens, LOA
We hope this discussion was able to shine a light on the trials and tribulations that many women have experienced in the workplace. There has been much progress in recent years to help correct this, but much more is needed in order to establish true equality. If you have had similar experiences, just know that you are not alone. Many women have had similar experiences as what we saw here and are willing to lend an open ear and a helping hand.
Grilling in the cold months may be challenging, but with the right preparation and techniques, you can enjoy delicious outdoor meals no matter the conditions. Whether you're craving a juicy steak, smoky barbecue, or grilled vegetables, winter grilling offers unique flavors and experiences. This comprehensive guide will help you navigate the chill and maximize your cold-weather grilling sessions.
Before you fire up the grill, it’s essential to ensure your equipment is ready for the challenges cold weather can bring. For gas grills, make sure your propane tank is full. Freezing temperatures can cause the pressure in gas tanks to drop, so it’s best to start with a full tank. For charcoal grills, store your fuel in a dry, warm place such as a garage to prevent it from absorbing moisture and becoming difficult to light. It’s also important to give your grill extra time to preheat, as cold air can make it take longer to reach the ideal cooking temperature. Preheat your grill for 15-20 minutes to ensure it’s hot and ready to go. Additionally, invest in a good-quality grill cover to protect your equipment from rust and snow accumulation.
Winter grilling is all about staying warm while you cook. Make sure to layer up with thermal undergarments, insulated jackets, and waterproof boots to keep comfortable. Thick, insulated gloves are essential for handling hot grills and utensils, and ones with removable fingers are great for better dexterity when flipping burgers or skewering vegetables. Be sure to cover your feet with warm, waterproof boots, especially if you're grilling in wet or snowy conditions. Dressing appropriately ensures you can stay outside longer without feeling the chill.
Cold air can make it harder to maintain consistent heat on your grill, but there are several strategies to ensure your food cooks evenly. Use a grill thermometer to monitor both the internal temperature of your grill and your food. This will help you avoid undercooking or overcooking your meal in fluctuating temperatures. To retain heat, try to keep the lid closed as much as possible; opening the grill allows warm air to escape, making it harder to maintain the desired cooking temperature. If you’re dealing with powerful winds, consider setting up a windbreak to protect the grill and maintain steady heat.
When grilling in colder temperatures, it's best to choose foods that can stand up to the chill. Thicker cuts of meat, such as bone-in chicken, steaks, or pork chops, are ideal because they cook slower and are less likely to dry out. These cuts give the grill more time to maintain heat and get a nice sear. Root vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes, and parsnips also work well on the grill, as they can handle longer cooking times and absorb the smoky flavors beautifully. When marinating, opt for thicker marinades that can better withstand the colder temperatures and lock in moisture and flavor.
Grilling in cold weather often means longer cooking times. Be prepared for your food to take a little extra time to cook compared to the warmer months. For instance, a steak that usually cooks in 8 minutes on a warm summer day may take closer to 12 minutes in the winter. Larger cuts of meat benefit from indirect heat, where you cook the food on one side of the grill while leaving the heat source on the other. This technique allows the meat to cook more evenly without drying out.
Grilling in winter presents some unique safety considerations. Before grilling, make sure to clear the area around your grill of snow and ice to prevent slips and falls. Additionally, always keep an eye on your grill while it's in use. Cold and windy conditions can make the flame unpredictable, so be vigilant about hot coals, grease fires, or flare-ups. It’s also a good idea to have a fire extinguisher nearby, just in case. With the right precautions, you can grill safely and confidently.
Winter grilling can be a fun and rewarding experience if you embrace the elements. The crisp air, the smoky aroma of grilling food, and the satisfaction of cooking outdoors in the winter all add to the experience. Consider inviting friends or family over for a winter barbecue, and setting up blankets and heaters to create a cozy outdoor dining space. Pair your grilled foods with warm beverages like mulled wine, hot chocolate, or spiced cider for the perfect winter grilling feast.
Grilling in cold weather may require a little extra effort, but the rewards are well worth it. With the right equipment, preparation, and mindset, you can enjoy delicious outdoor meals no matter the temperature. By taking the time to ensure your grill is ready, dressing warmly, and adjusting for longer cooking times, you can make the most of your outdoor grilling season. Whether you’re cooking a simple dinner or hosting a winter barbecue, grilling in the cold can become a delightful part of your winter routine.
