SPRING FEVER emphasis on contrast

After enduring the tight grasp of a wet and bone-chilling winter, finally, we step into spring and embrace every flower and bird’s chatter this season has to offer. Extra blankets, throws and gas heaters can be happily locked away until next year. Surfaces are dusted off and curtains thrown open to allow sunshine and light to wash over your interior. This year has seen trends including: coral, mixed metallics, handcrafts, smoky glassware, pallet design and re-purposed items, with an emphasis on contrast. To wake up your home interior to the scent of spring, here are a few simple tips and hints. As flowers come into bloom, take advantage of your garden’s treasures. Use glass vases and jars to display handpicked bouquets. These can be flowers, foliage or aloes. The addition of glass, water and green hues to an interior space adds a sense of a new life and growth. On the topic of blossoms and blooms, take a weekend to prune and weed your garden and planters. Besides the release of endorphins from the sun’s rays, you will bring renewed life to your forgotten plants. If you find a room that seems a little tired, a lick of fresh paint will give your space new life. Look for an item in the room to base your inspiration on and select a shade of colour from it. In a well-lit space, paint the walls a tone lighter than your inspiration shade and create a feature wall using a paint that is two tones darker. A key tip is to paint your trimmings such as, skirtings and architraves white, preferably in a glossy finish. The white finishes against the wall colour provide an elegant ‘finished’ look and the gloss reflects lighting, creating a crisp contrast. So as not to drown a space in white light, display warm colours such as raw timbers and gold, rose-gold or copper metals to create contrast alongside the light tones from glass and white linen. Lastly, never forget the freedom that comes from de-cluttering. Take the time to reorganise closets, bookshelves and mantels. You might just find pieces of furniture to re-use in a different interior space and perhaps more items to sell or donate.
