By now almost five-million people around the world have been infected with the Coronavirus. Over three-hundred thousand people have died. It is a serious illness that needs to be treated as such. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported a cluster of pneumonia cases in Wuhan City, China on 31 December 2019. Since then, the virus has spread to more than 213 countries and territories, including South Africa. Currently, the Western Cape accounts for about 56 per cent of the overall infections leaving places like Gauteng and the Eastern Cape in a distant second and third place, jointly taking up only around 27 per cent of the infections. Our president, Cyril Rhamaposa shared recently that “we consistently maintained that we rely on scientific, economic and empirical data when it comes to making decisions and formulating regulations around our coronavirus response. We have a look at how this approach to making decisions has impacted us and how the Coronavirus has affected the people in South Africa.

STRICTEST LOCKDOWN South Africa is known to be one of the countries that have taken the most extreme measures regarding our lockdown. According to journalist Andrew Harding (BBC Africa’s correspondent), Cyril Rhampaphoza’s quick-acting and strict lockdown changed South Africa overnight and proved “stunningly effective” at breaking the upward curve of infections. Rhamaphoza has also stated that “... the coronavirus pandemic and the measures we have taken to combat it have taken a heavy toll on our people. It has caused huge disruption and hardship. The economic fallout from the Coronavirus pandemic is bigger and worse than anyone ever imaged. With six weeks into one of the strictest lockdown on earth, one can’t help but wonder how bad things could get during the so-called peak of the pandemic.

Known symptoms for patients with COVID-19 have included mild to severe respiratory illness with cough, sore throat, shortness of breath or fever.
PREVENT INFECTION Masks have become a part of our lives. We even get to live out our individuality by designing or purchasing masks that make us feel unique among the hordes of white and pale blue surgical masks. To further prevent infections make sure you wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser with a minimum of 60 per cent alcohol. It is important to still avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands - especially when you are wearing surgical gloves. Lastly, avoid close contact with people who are sick and stay at home when you are sick. Remember to frequently clean and disinfect touched objects and surfaces. Need urgent assistance. LET’S RECAP The only way to stop the virus and its economic carnage is to prevent infections. According to The National Institute for Communicable Diseases, the spread of the disease is thought to happen mainly by respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The majority of cases have occurred in people with close physical contact to cases and healthcare workers caring for patients with COVID-19.

VIRUS FREE Cleanliness is Godliness and that is more relevant now than ever before. COVID-19 has affected almost a million people around the world, with no slowing down unless we have something to do with it. The virus spreads through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These can be inhaled by others or it can be left on surfaces where the virus can live for days.
From levelling up your handwashing stations to cleaning routines for the family here are our top tips for keeping any virus at bay. LEVEL UP
You are going to have to level up your hand-washing stations. Make sure you have handwash or soap handy at all your taps in and around the house. It is recommended that we wash our hands for 20 seconds with any soap. It does not have to be anti-bacterial. Supply paper towels or hand towels that can be used to dry hands off with. Have a small laundry hamper for dirty towels or a bin for used paper towels. Make sure these handwashing stations are regularly cleaned. Keep alcohol wipes nearby to wipe faucets down regularly.
FOCUS ON
Focus on cleaning areas that have a lot of traffic like doorknobs and handles, TV remotes, light switches etc. Make sure there is hand sanitizer in these areas. If you are using hand sanitizer remember that it needs to have at least 60% alcohol to be effective against the Corona Virus. It’s a good idea to double up this time around, especially after visiting the shops or when having to go out of your house for other essentials. Use soap and water to clean surfaces. This removes dirt and germs but does not necessarily kill them. Preferably use a disinfectant after cleaning to kill germs.
NEW ROUTINE
It’s a good idea to start a new sanitizing routine for when you or family members get home. As soon as you get home remove your shoes at the door and outer

clothing close to a laundry bin so that it can go straight to the wash. After that, it is a good idea to wash hands or even jump in the shower. The Corona Virus is said to attach itself to hair and clothes as well. Take care when carrying in your grocery bags. It is advised to remove as much packaging as you can. Wash your hands after handling anything from the grocery store.
LAUNDRY CARE
As mentioned above, you can get COVID-19 from it being on your clothes. If you may have been exposed to the virus you should wash your clothes immediately. You should choose the hottest setting that your clothes can handle and if possible give it a tumble dry afterwards. The heat is a great friend when combatting any germ or virus. Once you have handled the laundry, it is also recommended that you follow your handwashing and sanitizing routine to ensure your hands are as clean as it can be.
DON’T FORGET to get the kids
in on the daily routines. Let them choose a handsoap they like, sing a favourite song or cite their favourite poem for twenty seconds and make sure the basin is easy to reach if you have littles.
