The sizzling hot and stifling days of late spring and summer are here again. Sun lotion, warm weather, flip flops, lemonade, flowers, swimming, pools, laughing children, sprinklers, watermelon, ice tea, early morning and late evening walks with our dogs, vacations, reading a good book are all things we associate with summer. With average temperatures in May and June of 89 to 100 degrees, it is challenging to balance staying cool and staying active. Also, summertime safety is a concern for people and pets. This issue includes a number of ideas and hints about pets and summertime safety. Though summer gives us permission to add a little rest and relaxation to our normal routines of living, it is important to stay connected to the Las Vegas pet community. Summer is here in Vegas – and that means temperatures soaring well over 100 degrees for much of the summer. Pets have a higher internal temperature than humans and they can get hot very quickly. Here are a few tips to keep your pets safe and cool during the hot summer months. Most important - NEVER leave your pet in the car!! It is surprising how many people still leave their pets unattended in their cars when they run into a store for a few minutes. On a 90-degree day, the interior temperature can reach as high as 160 degrees in less than 10 minutes. Animals can sustain brain damage or even die from heatstroke in 15 minutes or less. Always keep plenty of cold, fresh water available. Exercise early, in the cooler times of the day. Carry water and a foldable water bowl on walks and hikes. Avoid hot pavement, which can burn the pads of your dog’s paw. Dogs can’t sweat. The only way for a dog to cool down is to pant. Don’t leave your pet out in the yard for too long. Many dogs enjoy a quick cool down bath. Use a garden hose or use wet towels to cool down your dog or cat. If your pet really loves water, a child’s pool can be an excellent way for them to play and stay cool. The above tips will help you keep your pet safe and cool this summer. However, it is important to know the warning signs of overheating in pets. Symptoms are excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor or even collapse. If you think your pet may be overheated, get your pet out of the heat and into shade immediately. Applying cool, wet towels to the groin area, stomach, chest, and paws can also help. It is important to get them to a vet ASAP. Report a Distressed Animal

A new dog sport sensation has swept the nation called Dock Diving.
It features dogs of all breeds, from Chihuahuas to Great Danes, who love water, running, jumping and fetching mixed with a little competitive spirit. DockDogs are as fun to watch as the Frisbee dogs of a few years back because of the sheer joy and playfulness with which they approach this new sport and in turn the animation and athleticism of these dogs becomes contagious for human spectators. In my research for this article I have seen dock diving competitions on YouTube which had me laughing and cheering with amazement at the wonderful dogs of all breeds who excel at this new sport. One of the great things about Dock Diving is there is not a great deal of training involved. Any dog (six months or older) and any fetch toy is all that is required to turn a plain ole dog into a flying machine. This is an amazing sport for your dog, especially if he loves water. It is enjoyed by young and old, and there is no age limit for handlers. Dock diving started in 2000 when ESPN first televised GREAT OUTDOOR GAMES. One of the events that aired was a game called “Big Air Dogs.” Since that time dock diving has gained great popularity with dock diving clubs being established all over the country. The dock diving competitions have led to Dock Diving Tours and a National Championship Series which has been widely televised. Dock Dogs® and Splash Dogs are two organizations that sponsor dock diving events and have helped to develop standards and maintain credibility for this exciting sport.

There are three different dog diving events: “Big Air” is based on the track and field event known as the long jump. The competing dog runs down a 40-foot dock and launches himself into a pool, chasing a toy the handler has thrown as the dog jumped. The winner is determined by the dog who, jumps the farthest, as measured from the end of the dock to where the dogs butt hits the water. “Extreme Vertical” is based on the high jump with the dog jumping upward at the end of the dock to reach the greatest vertical height. After knocking down a bumper suspended eight feet beyond the dock the dog splashed down into the water. In “Speed Retrieve” the dog runs to the water, jumps in and swims to retrieve a toy held on a pole 38 feet past the end of the dock. The timer starts at the 20-foot mark on the dock and ends when the dog snatches the toy from the pole. “Iron Dogs” compete in all three events.

the language of contentment
For a cat lover, the purring of a cat is one of the most comforting sounds in the world. It is the language of contentment. A few interesting facts about purring:

Purring seems to begin in the brain. A rhythmic, repetitive neural oscillator sends messages to the laryngeal muscles, causing them to twitch at the rate of 25 to 150 vibrations per second (Hz). This causes a sudden separation of the vocal cords, during both inhalation and exhalation – and produces purring. Purring is usually so low-pitched that we feel it as well as hear it. Purring usually signals contentment but cats appear to purr for a number of other reasons. They purr when in pain, in labor, or when ill or injured. Kittens soon purr right after birth. There is a theory that the 25 Hz frequency of the cat’s purr might offer a kind of built-in physical therapy. This is the same frequency that is used in humans to help wounds heal faster, Yes, even a cat’s purr is complicated. However, for cat lovers it is the sound that creates peacefulness and calmness. It is the sound that says all is right in our relationship.
Interesting Fish Facts a 12.6 million U.S. households own fish according to APPA’s 2011-2012 National Pet Owners Survey. a It wasn’t until 1853 in London when aeration and filtration of water was understood, that people were able to keep fish as indoor pets. The first public aquarium was opened in London (1853), and by 1856 New York also had an aquarium. a There are approximately 32,000 different kinds of fish in the world today. a A fish can drown in water. Like humans, fish need oxygen, so if there isn’t enough oxygen in the water, they will suffocate. a Catfish have over 27,000 taste buds. Humans have around 7,000.
Fish live a long time – •
Tish the goldfish was recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest captive goldfish, 43 years after he was won as a prize at a funfair. In later life, Tish had faded from bright orange to silver, but remained healthy until shortly before his death. As of 2003, “Goldie”, also 43 years old, will be in the next edition of Guiness. Goldfish have been known to live into their 30’s at least. Life expectancies from 10 to 20 years are normal for well cared for fish.
• The oldest fish was actually a Koi named Hanako. The fish died in 1977, but was born in, wait for it, 1751! She was 226 years old when she died. She passed down through the family from generation to generation and lived in a pond with equally ancient Koi. On average pond kept Koi can live at least 50 years. Goldfish at least 20 years. • A fish does not add new scales as it grows, but the scales it has increase in size. In this way, growth rings are formed and the rings reveal the age of a fish.

PET FRiENDLY APARTMENTS Many times I hear about my doggie and kitty friends being surrendered to shelters or rescue organizations because their owners could not find a place to live that allowed pets. Thankfully, the housing market has been changing and more and more apartment complexes are allowing people to bring their four-legged family members with them. Last I checked there were over 200 complexes that allowed pets! That’s great, but that sure is a lot of house hounding to do, so I sorted through them all and picked out the best ones in the Vegas area.
The Best Complexes
You can find pet friendly apartments at different price points all over the Vegas area, however, if you want to live in one of the best dog friendly complexes check out these places where 80% or more of their residents would recommend them based on reviews at www.apartmentratings.com. In Summerlin, Venicia and Madera are highly rated, in the Southwest, Clubs at Rhodes Ranch is at the top of the list. If you are looking in the Sunrise neighborhood, try Avion at Sunrise Mountain or Oasis Island. For senior living I recommend Country Club at Valley View near downtown. If you want to live in Henderson try Arabella, Pacific Islands, Promontory Point or Firenze apartments.
Restrictions
Not all pet friendly apartments accept all pets, most have breed and size restrictions and there is a limit to the number of pets you can have as well. Pit Bulls seem to be excluded most of all, however, I did find four complexes with good ratings that have no breed restrictions. Victory Village in Henderson, Summerlin Pointe on Sahara, Tiffany Place on Charleston and Country Club Towers on Desert Inn all allow any breed of dog. Big woofs for that! Victory Village also has an onsite dog park. Just about everyone has a limit of two dogs, however Oasis Gateway on Vegas Dr. allows up to three. Also, check out the Ovation properties if you have a larger dog, they have 15 different complexes across the valley that accepts dogs up to 80 lbs.
Fees
Make sure you read all of the fine print before selecting an apartment as fees and deposits can vary. Most places require a pet deposit that may range from $150-$250 and you may also be asked to pay a non-refundable pet deposit which means you don’t get it back. Additionally, most complexes charge a monthly pet rent of $15-$35 per pet. I know the fees can add up, but it’s a small price to pay to have our unconditional love and wiggly butts waiting at the door for you everyday.

Did you know
that 4.7 million people in the United States are bitten by dogs every year and that the majority of those bitten are children? In recognition of National Dog Bite Prevention week (May 19 – May 25), we would like to offer some helpful tips on how to prevent a dog bite from occurring. Dogs don’t bite because they are “bad” dogs. They generally bite because they are afraid, feel threatened, or are protecting something. All dogs possess a survival mechanism that cues them to bite – an innate response which has ensured their existence. Protecting their food, their offspring, and their territory is as important as protecting themselves from predators, or anything that MIGHT be a predator. (In the dog world, “bite first, ask questions later” seems to have worked out well.) To interact with dogs in our world, we simply need to remember a few basic rules. If you are approached by unfamiliar dog, you need to resist the urge to run. Keep your hands at your sides, remain motionless, and avoid eye contact with the dog. Once the dog loses interest in you, slowly back away until the dog is out of sight. Don’t ever approach an unfamiliar dog, especially one that is confined in a yard or car. Their instinct will be to protect his territory.
So, what about meeting a dog that is accompanied by their owner? Some guidelines to use in this situation are recommended by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Follow this acronym: W.A.I.T.
Wait to make sure that the dog looks friendly. If the dog looks afraid or angry, STOP and walk away slowly.
Ask the owner for permission before you pet their dog. STOP if the owner says no. Invite the dog to sniff you by using a quiet voice, keeping your hands curled against your thighs. If the dog does not come over to sniff you, STOP and do not touch the dog.
Touch the dog gently and never pet near the face, head or tail. Pet them on their back. At home, with your own dog, there are some rules for you and your children to remember. No matter how well-behaved a dog is, don’t ever leave a dog alone with a child….ever. Teach your children to leave your dog alone when it is eating, sleeping, chewing on a toy, or caring for puppies. Always make sure your dog sees you before you try to pet him. Startling your dog, in any way, may cause him to bite out of fear. Don’t ever stare at your dog. Staring, in the animal kingdom, is a challenge for dominance. Your dog may respond with aggression.
By making a few adjustments to OUR behavior around dogs, a bite is usually avoidable. The relationship we have with these beautiful creatures is certainly worth the risk.

Pet Cancer Awareness

W
e have all heard the familiar terms associated with the disease: cancer cells, mass, growth, lump, tumor, malignant, benign, metastatic, etc. These terms are often misused or misunderstood by pet owners which can cause confusion. Listed below are some basic terms and their definitions. Understanding the differences between these relationships should help when discussing the topic of cancer with your veterinarian. Cancer: Uncontrolled abnormal changes or mutations in the cells of our body that have the tendency to spread and affect the way other parts our body work. Cells: Microscopic units that collectively make up the tissues in our body. i.e. skin cells, muscle cells, blood cells.
Mass–Tumor–Growth–Lump: You will often see these terms used interchangeably. These are nearly synonyms of each other when referring to abnormal changes in the skin or an organ. These are not synonymous with cancer, but can be determined to be cancer with proper diagnostics testing. Metastasis: Refers to the spread of abnormal cancerous cells from one site in the body to other sites or organs. i.e. The cancer metastasized to the lungs OR spread to the lungs. Malignant: Malignant tumors can invade and destroy nearby tissue and spread to other parts of the body. Cancerous cells are synonymous with malignant cells. Benign: Tumors that are not a danger to health nor have the tendency to spread or be malignant. Benign tumors are not cancerous. Cells are born, they get old, they die and new ones are made so we continue to live healthy lives. There are many factors that alter this beautiful life cycle when considering how cancer actually happens and why. The truth is, we don’t know exactly why it happens but genetic factors are thought to play a significant role, as well as environmental factors including sun exposure, chemical exposure, smoke, pesticides, viruses, and in rare cases, some vaccines in cats. The benefits of receiving the protection of vaccines far outweigh the risk of getting a vaccine-associated cancer in cats. Please refer to your veterinarian regarding types, frequency and risks of vaccination in cats. Every part of the body that contains cells can be affected by cancer. Skin, eyes, bone, brain, heart, lungs, liver, kidney, pancreas, intestinal, urogenital, even our blood and lymphatic system. That is nearly everything but hair and nails! Some of the more common cancers seen in dogs are lymphoma, mast cell tumors of the skin, mammary cancer often related to unspayed females and bone cancer, seen especially in large breed dogs. We see cancer less often in cats than dogs, but when it happens it tends to be fairly aggressive. The more common cancers seen in cats are lymphoma, often associated with contracting the leukemia virus and oral cancers. 18

So how does one know if their pet potentially has cancer? I recommend taking your pet for an annual or bi-annual visit to your veterinarian’s office for a routine physical exam and vaccines. Your veterinarian should feel the entire surface of your pet’s body, look into the eyes, ears, mouth and listen with a stethoscope to the heart and lungs. They may recommend diagnostic testing when appropriate either due to abnormal physical exam findings or for patients that are in their senior years. In addition to routine check ups, be mindful of any changes in your pet’s daily routine AND pet your pet often! Petting and caressing your pet has proven benefits to you as well as your pet’s health and general well being. You may also be able to detect early changes such as a skin growth or an enlarged belly which may indicate an enlarged organ or tumor. If your pet has changes in appetite, water drinking, activity, urination or defecation habits, shows signs of pain, vomiting or diarrhea, these may all be precursors to cancer or just as importantly, precursors to other major disease processes that may need to be addressed. And remember, spaying and neutering reduces the incidence of mammary, prostate, and testicular cancer. So what if your dog or cat is diagnosed with cancer? Once the diagnosis is made, your veterinarian will discuss options depending on the type and severity of the cancer. These may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or other medical therapies. And remember, your veterinarian will be able to help you determine which of these treatments are best for your particular situation. I encourage as much communication as possible between you and your veterinarian. No question is a stupid question when trying to understand and make the best decision for your beloved companion.
Key points to aid in early detection of cancer: 1. Spay and Neuter your animals. 2. Keep current on vaccine recommendations and yearly physical exams. 3. Be aware of changes in your pets normal daily routine. 4. Pet your pets often! 5. Communicate with your veterinarian often, remember no question is a stupid question when it comes to the health and well being of your beloved companions.
Bradley Colacion with his mom, Kathy Now I’d like to introduce you to Bradley Colacion, an 11 year old French Bulldog with a fighting heart and soul and his mom, Kathy, who is amongst the most committed of pet owners. Just prior to the diagnosis of bladder cancer in late 2011, Kathy noticed Bradley straining to urinate and his urine appeared to have some blood in it which prompted her to make the first visit to her veterinarian. After a series of tests by her veterinarian and referrals to oncologists (cancer specialists), Bradley was diagnosed with the most common cancer that can affect the bladder, a Transitional Cell Carcinoma. The cancer had severely invaded his bladder and urethra making it difficult to urinate and he was initially given months to live. Mrs. Colacion took every recommendation from her veterinarian and the specialists. Currently Bradley is on a course of medications that help control his symptoms so that Bradley will have a greater quality of life with his family for a longer period of time. He has already beaten the odds. Bladder cancer will eventually take its toll on Mr. Bradley Colacion, but until that day, Mrs. Colacion and her family are dedicated to monitoring his quality of life and assuring he is happy and pain free.
Cancer is an unfortunate process that has cut so many lives short. If we cannot fully prevent cancer in our loved ones, we can at least exhaust our efforts to decrease the chance of it happening. The more we know about the health care of our beloved pets, the better lives they live and the happier we all live together. One swipe of a tail over a low table, and your collection is in pieces. No difference from when your little ones started to take their first steps. Things had to be moved out of reach. So move your breakables to higher ground and replace those delicate items with unbreakable accessories made from resin, metal, leather and woven materials. You can do a very nice grouping with a resin vase; leather bound books and greenery in a metal container.
2) Frisk Your Houseplants
Many plants, including aloe, ivies, and amaryllis, can be toxic to dogs and cats. For a complete list, check with the ASPCA, aspca.org. If you are a plant-lover, set your greenery on sturdy bases so a hearty dog-cat chase won’t knock them over. Replace any plants at their level with artificial ones. There are some great ones out there that the only way you know they are fake is to touch them. Also, they are no maintenance which is perfect for a busy family.
3) Calling All Cords
Be careful of drapes and blinds with long cords and tassels that pets can wrap up in. Secure electrical cords or hide them so they are not dangling free where they might look like a fun attraction. Plus, Fido doesn’t need to make them a chew toy and get an electrical shock treatment. 20

Who doesn’t like cozying up to a roaring fire and candle lit room? The ambience is romantic and relaxing. But not if you have to keep an eye out for tails. Consider an attractive fireplace screen if you don’t already have glass doors. Battery operated candles look and smell just light real ones now. They come in different senses and even flicker.

5) Trash Day
How many times have you come home with tissues down the hall? What is it with pets that they love to dig the tissues out of the bathroom waste basket and eat them? Plus, there are many other things you don’t want your pet getting out of your bathroom trash that can hurt or even poison them. So replace your typical waste basket with something that has a top. You can find some cute ones with swing top lids. For those Houdini pets, you might have to use a decorative covered box on your counter. Of course, keeping a top on your kitchen trash or keeping it in a cabinet should be common practice for a pet safe house.
6) Time To Move
Yes, that is my Cockatoo Peaches who ate a hole in the back of a storage cabinet by her cage. The little stinker has a ton of chew toys in her cage, but obviously was tired of them this day. I was a bit upset, but guess I should

A new way to fund pet welfare You love your pet. In fact, they are a member of your family. You would do anything for them. Stacey Nutini and her business partner joined their awesome talents to design a website, Fund A Pet Miracle (www.fundapetmiracle.com), to allow people to help other people help their loved ones. I had the pleasure of speaking with Stacey and would like to share her thoughts and vision about their creation. ~ By Kathy Schreur What was your inspiration for Fund A Pet Miracle? We have had and still have several beagles. Our 15 year old developed a kidney disease and diabetes. The treatment was very expensive, but it was worth it to see how energetic and happy she became again. It started us thinking, what if we couldn’t afford the treatment? From there, we worked for two months and Fund A Pet Miracle was launched in October 2012. Your website is extremely well designed and thorough. Do you have professional help with it? Thank you. Actually, that is my business partner. He is an internet and marketing expert and serves as our IT guy on the back end. The credit for site construction, web hosting, and all technical details goes to him. I help everyone put together their projects and serve as the customer service face for our company. I am also a full-time professional poker player. That is an interesting combination. How do you manage to find time for your profession and Miracle? I find that I am spending more and more time on the program. It really is where our hearts are. We have so far helped over 100 people and their pets and we continue to grow. The poker community has been very supportive. We have had players commit one percent of their winnings to the site. Could you give an example of a project? One that stays with me is a year old dog, who had hip dysplasia so bad he could not walk. Although he could not get up and walk, he still was such a happy pup. Even with pet insurance, the two surgeries he 24

required would still cost from $12,000 to $20,000. Because he is still a puppy, the decision was made to have the operations. In January, he had his first surgery that will help him lead a normal life. How do folks get started? There is an application process on the website. I review each project usually within 24 hours and I will tell them what they need to do to reach their goal with pictures and story, and I go over the guidelines. They need to be responsive to their donors, sending updates and keeping them involved. When they have reached their goal, they are responsible for sending a token of appreciation. It can be a picture or a note, whatever they can think of that says thank you. Do they need a letter from a veterinarian? Not necessarily a letter, but I will personally call and consult with their vet and verify what is needed and the cost. I also consult with my sister, who is a veterinarian, and Dr. Mark Beerenstrauch, a local veterinarian. Is that how you protect against people who may try to scam? I thoroughly vet each project. I am very interactive with all who apply. We have not had any problems to date. I have to admit that seeing all those little faces breaks my heart. It is so hard knowing there are so many who need help. My mom says the same thing and she donates all the time. I was afraid, at first, that there would be too much hurt and I wondered how I would handle it. But I find that because I know I am helping and I know
that we are providing hope, it makes it all worthwhile. I find that even if people do not meet their goal, the funds they do raise can provide a down payment on necessary care and treatment. Sometimes it makes the difference between keeping the pet or surrendering them to a shelter. Any help is still helping. How does one donate? Go to www.fundapetmiracle.com and sign up for a free account in our community. You can then click on any project on the site and donate using Paypal. We are working on a QuickPay way to donate that will speed up the process for those who do not want to take all the steps to become part of our interactive social website community. Are you a non-profit organization? We are currently applying for 501(c) 3 status. You can donate to one of the many rescue organizations on our site to receive a tax write off for your deduction. 97% of all donations go directly to the cause and 3% covers the cost of running the site. Do you have a vision of what you see Fund a Pet Miracle ultimately becoming? Absolutely. Though we started in Las Vegas we have had people from 14 different states participate. We put an ad on Craigslist and that really spread the word. Since we utilize internet communities, we would eventually like to expand internationally. I have been trying to get Fund A Pet Miracle featured on Ellen DeGeneres. She is such an animal person and I know she could help us get very widespread exposure. We would like to add a special section on the site where people can donate to pay the pull fees for rescue shelter dogs.

Las Vegas is a big city, but it’s also a desert community reminiscent of the old Wild West. Beyond the glamour and glitz of the Strip, Las Vegas is home to a large horse community. In 2011, All Vegas Horses (AVH), a website dedicated to everything equestrian in Las Vegas was started by Karin Cartwood. Horse lovers can find everything they need, from tack to places to ride and events in which to participate and everything else that relates to a horse. “All Vegas Horses started as an idea to build a website for the horse community where all our local equestrian resources could be easily referenced,” Karin says. “I hired a programmer to help me build the site in January 2011 and spent the next three months getting all the data I could find into the system . . . businesses, calendars and eventually photos and news stories. The latter is my passion, I love photography and writing, and I realized how much people enjoy seeing their own pictures and reading about their local clubs and community.” With one quick visit to the site, it’s obvious that Cartwood’s vision of an equestrian community sharing online has become a reality. Members can create their own profile, view a calendar with all the upcoming Vegas horse events, place free classifieds and find things to do. AVH is
reaching beyond the social aspects as well, tapping into the horse business. A link to “Find Stuff ” offers viewers links to local veterinarians, farriers, feed, clothing, tack, boarding, clubs and organizations. The classified ads (“Sell Stuff ”) are free as well. Members pay nothing to join AVH.
AVH is growing far beyond its founder’s original vision. “What happened is that so many people responded to the concept that it has branched out from the website into a very real community organization,” Cartwood says. “With the addition of the Meetup module, we were able to start inviting members to join together, and as that happened, new ideas began to form.” AVH member and Trails rider Keith Wheeler was an integral part of forming the Backcountry Horsemen’s local Bristlecone chapter. Wheeler was hosting local rides through AVH and attending land use meetings in the area. He pulled together a group of fellow riders to form a Trails committee and eventually this southern chapter of the Back Country Horsemen of Nevada, dedicated to working for the future of the trails system in Las Vegas.
“My personal passion is to see our LEAN concept blossom. LEAN stands for “Local Equine Assistance Network.” The goal is to form a structured cooperative of local businesses and equestrians who can each offer some small part in helping horses and families in need.” The program is very timely in its inception. With tough economic times bringing trouble to many families, especially given the high unemployment rate in Nevada, many of the hardest hit are horse owners. Horse rescue facilities are finding it tough to keep up with the numbers of horses whose families simply cannot afford to care for them anymore. Most arrive in poor condition… neglected feet and teeth, untreated wounds, exhausted and malnourished.
