Welcome 2025 - Difficult to believe that a new year lies before us. Time does go by so quickly. It’s

another year of holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, and other ways to celebrate our lives. It’s a new beginning, a fresh slate, and an invitation to live each day with hope and optimism. January is an invitation to start again. It was named after the Roman god Janus; the god of beginnings and endings, gates and doorways, sunrise and sunset, and transitions. For many, it is a time that offers a fresh start or a clean slate. A fun time to make resolutions, though, the majority of us fail to keep them. A humorous quote from an unknown author, A New Year’s resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other, is one that we all can probably relate to. Yet on serious note, it can be a time for serious reflection, reviewing the previous year and creating a plan for the new year. To resolve to live each day with hope, gratefulness and optimism recognizing each day’s potential for great possibilities.

Although no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending. ~ Carl Bard

»» IN THE NEWS JUSTICE FOR REBA

is not “new” news, however, there are recent developments in the Justice for Reba movement that are definitely newsworthy and definitely “good news”. The case, well known locally and covered by national news sources involved Reba, a dog who was locked inside a plastic bin. Her abusers dumped the bin next to a trash bin in triple-digit heat and left her to die. She was found on July 26, though still alive, she succumbed to her injuries a few days later. A massive campaign was organized to find her killers. Two suspects were arrested. On December 10, Nevada Republican Assemblywoman Melissa Hardy filed draft legislation named “Reba’s Bill” to strengthen penalties against animal abusers. Secondly, December 20, a Clark County grand jury voted to indict the couple which means the case will move directly to district court. It’s important for everyone to TAKE ACTION to get Reba’s Bill passed at state level. Check out the following website to find out you can help advocate for changes at the state level: Justice for Reba – www.justiceforreba.org Express your appreciation to Assemblywoman Melissa Hardy and offer your support: Assemblymember Melissa Hardy Melissa.Hardy@asm.state.nv.us Write to your elected state officials stating your support of stricter animal cruelty laws in Nevada. R, NEW YEA ES! ERIENC NEW EXP By Sheryl Green

Do you have a fur baby that enjoys exploring? Whether you leave the state or make Las Vegas your playground, you can have many fun experiences with your “ride-or-die” pup. Of course, when traveling with a fur kid, you’ll want to be prepared to ensure it’s a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Follow these 5 tips for Exploring with Your Dog 1 KNOW YOUR PET

While it would be nice if all pups could navigate and enjoy the proposed outing, the fact is older dogs, or pups with health issues or behavior issues, may not be able to handle the activity you have in mind. If appropriate, make sure you have a backpack or stroller so they don’t have to walk but can still enjoy the experience, or leave them home and find a fun bonding activity that’s more their speed.

2 RESEARCH YOUR LOCATION

Some areas are super dog-friendly, with water bowls, potty bags, and friendly shop owners handing out biscuits. Some… are not. Research wherever you’d like to go and make sure your furry friend will be welcomed and safe. Once you’ve identified where you’ll go, find dog-friendly activities, restaurants, and hotels that accept pets if you plan to stay overnight. It’s not easy to sneak a dog into a hotel. (Don’t ask me how I know.) Bring a crate in case you have to head out without your pup for a short period of time.

3 SECURE YOUR PUP

A seatbelt will keep your furry friend safe on the drive. Dogs love open windows but make sure they can’t fit (or jump) through the opening. When it comes to walking around town or nature, you’ll want to have your baby leashed up. It’s not only a way to keep them and other dogs safe; it’s also required by law in most areas. Even if your dog is well-trained, you never know when a new sight or smell may send them running. 6

Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine • January/February 2025

4 KEEP YOUR BABY UP-TO-DATE ON VACCINES AND MEDICATIONS

If you’ve lived in Vegas for a while, things like flea protection may not even cross your mind. However, when traveling, hiking, or otherwise changing environments and locations, your pup will be exposed to different dangers. Ensure your dog is vaccinated appropriately, and ask your vet if there are any precautionary meds to consider. Remember to bring any medications they may need.

5 PACK THE ESSENTIALS

While they don’t require quite as much stuff as little humans, you must still be prepared to travel or explore with your pup. You’ll want to pack plenty of water and a water dish, any meals they’ll eat on the road (and a few extra in case of emergency), treats, their collar with ID tags, leash, and harness, poop bags, maybe a toy or two, a blanket, medications, and a first aid kit. Don’t forget activity-appropriate gear like snow boots, a life jacket, or reflective accessories. You may also want to keep a towel in your car for when your dry dog decides to take a bath in a muddy stream. (Don’t ask how I know this either). Your dog can be the best travel partner in the world when you do your homework. Ensure your pup is fit for the activity and welcomed wherever you’re headed, vaccinated and medicated, secured, and prepared for fun exploring time.

The Best Nose Dogs or Cats?

B

oth dogs and cats seem to have an affinity for sniffing everything. Unfamiliar people and objects must always be sufficiently sniffed before they are either accepted or rejected by our pets. Dogs and cats are able to gain an abundance of information from a single scent and have a significantly keener sense of smell than humans. So which one has the superior nose? Dogs, by a landslide, win the contest for the best nose. By design, a dog’s nose is made for smelling. With up to 300 million olfactory receptors in their nose –far more than cats (at 80 million) or humans (at 6 million), a dog’s sense of smell is over 40 times greater than our own. Dogs also have the ability to move their nostrils independently, which helps them identify which direction a smell originated from. When a dog smells something, he does not just smell an odor like humans do. He has the ability to break a scent down into its individual components, identifying each part and piece that makes up that scent. A pizza, for example, doesn’t just smell like pizza to a dog. He can break down the separate smells of each individual ingredient that make up the pizza -- from the crust, to the toppings, and every spice that it contains. The ability to break down scents in this way enables a dog to gather an abundance of useful information. With one quick sniff, a dog can determine the sex of another animal, where it has been, and what it has touched.

Even though dogs have the superior nose, we cannot discount the smelling abilities of our feline friends. Cats also have incredible “sniffers”. Their tiny triangular noses are still FAR superior to ours, enabling them to sniff out food, mates, and predators. When a cat wants to smell something particularly interesting, it may open its mouth slightly as it inhales. This behavior is exhibited when a cat is trying to maximize his smelling ability. By opening its mouth, the cat is attempting to direct the scent to a gland in his mouth located behind his front teeth. As his mouth opens, the ducts in a gland called Jacobson’s Organ will open, transporting the scent directly into the nasal cavity. The scent of another cat (friend or foe) is easily detected using this method. Used as a form of communication, cats purposely leave their scent on things to let other cats know…“this is mine”.

When it comes to our human smelling abilities, we are far outmatched by both dogs and cats. Our noses are simply not designed to be “super-smellers”. But in certain situations, maybe that’s not always such a bad thing? J

What Your Dog Sitter Needs to Know Don’t tell your pooch, but sometimes you might want to take a vacation without them.

Che ck

lis t

Oh no!

By Elizabeth Parker It can be stressful for both humans and dogs when separated for a little while, but there are things you can do to make the temporary transition a little easier. If you have a reputable pet sitter that can come to the house, you’ll want your pet sitter to be as prepared as possible to make them feel more confident while watching your pets. It will also help you feel relaxed having all bases covered.

EMERGENCY VET: Unfortunately, accidents happen, and sometimes healthy dogs become ill. Is there an emergency veterinarian on call and will they take appropriate action to get your dog immediate care?

HERE IS SOME INFORMATION YOUR DOG SITTER WILL WANT TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR FUR-BABY:

DON’T FORGET TO INQUIRE ABOUT THESE DETAILS AS WELL!

[ Feeding Schedule and how much, including daily snacks. [ Any allergies or medications. [ Dog(s) fears or quirks. [ Potty breaks (times and intervals between each). [ Should your dog be exercised? [ Vet and vet emergency phone numbers, locations & hours. [ Phone number of where to reach you. [ Bedtime – is your dog the type who knows their bedtime

and starts to get antsy summoning you to bed as the clock strikes that hour? If so, your sitter will want to know this! Along those same lines, where does the dog(s) sleep?

If you cannot find a sitter, you might have to board your dog in a kennel. Hopefully your pooch won’t mind spending a few days away from family to discover new and exciting territories! When choosing the kennel for your dog, there are some additional factors to consider: COST: Make sure the final amount due meets your budget. SCHEDULING TIME: Find out how much time in advance you need to schedule your pet’ stay. DOG INTERACTION: Does this facility have a play area for all of the dogs to get to know each other? This can be a great advantage if you have a dog who loves social activities, but some dogs don’t play well with others. You can let the facility know your preference. Some places charge extra to exercise your pet solo so that is something to learn about upfront. IS SOMEONE ALWAYS ON PREMISES? If there’s an emergency, will someone be there to bring your dog to safety? 10

Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine • January/February 2025

WHAT IF YOU CAN’T PICK THEM UP DUE TO YOUR OWN EMERGENCY? Be sure to have a contingency plan in your absence in case you are delayed.

• Drop off time, Pick up time • Is there a group Discount for more than one dog or referral discount? • Size of Pen • Is there access to the outdoors from your dog’s pen? • Exercise • Cleanliness/ Temperature Controlled • Live Cam Available? • Will someone administer medicines?

A FEW LAST ITEMS TO BRING: 3 Vaccination papers 3 Blanket/Toys/Beds 3 Your dog’s food 3 Treats 3 Medicines (if applicable)

On the day of drop off, try to make it a positive experience. Our dogs sense our moods and will pick up on anxiety or sadness. Try to be relaxed and upbeat. The better experience they have the first time, the less they will be frightened the next time! Storage and Organization Ideas

By G

Creative

h

for Pet Supplies HAPPY NEW YEAR! Can you believe another year has flown by? I bet your days are as busy as mine and keeping up with chores can be overwhelming. It’s already challenging to tidy up after yourself and your family, but with pets, it becomes even more time-consuming since they can’t clean up after themselves. Finding space for everything is tough, and pets add to the clutter. With their food, toys, dishes, leashes, grooming supplies, and clothes, things can get messy quickly. So, here are a few ideas to make life with your furry friend easier. First, let go of items you no longer use. Sentimental items like old leashes can be hard to part with but each new fur baby deserves their own leash, collar, and bowls. How many toys have you bought that your pet only played with once or not at all? Consider donating them to a rescue or shelter. Someone waiting for their forever home would appreciate them. Once you’ve sorted through your pet’s belongings, designate pet zones for their food, toys, and other essentials. If you usually leave through the garage for a walk, create a pet walking station by the door with leashes, potty bags, water bottles, toys, and coats for those chilly days. This way, everything you need for a walk is in one handy spot. For medications and supplements, use a dedicated drawer where you prepare their food. Store food, bowls, and treats in a cabinet underneath to create a one-stop feeding station. If a drawer doesn’t work for you, use a shelf in your pantry. Clear plastic containers are great for keeping things that aren’t boxed or are too small to stack. Use a separate container for each type to easily find what you need without shuffling things around. If counter space is easier, use a vintage bread box, mason jars, or a tiered cake plate.

my baby rocker that I put the toys they play with in the morning when I’m getting ready. Want to keep toys out of sight but easy to access? Storage ottomans are perfect and dual-functional. Pull their toys out and get your feet up after a long day. Vintage suitcases add a nice touch, can be stacked and you can even sort their toys into suitcases. Picnic baskets come in all shapes and sizes. I love the old-time ones. Repurpose a toy chest, planter box, or use a fun steamer trunk. An old magazine rack and decorative fireplace log holders are good for storing flat toys and ropes. Instead of having them piled together, you can separate them with a wall cubby with individual slots, like a mini locker for your pet. Create a mounted basket rail with a horizontal rail on the wall and hang wire or wicker baskets from it. Add bins to lower shelves in a bookcase. Turn an old wooden pallet into a wall-mounted toy organizer by adding hooks and small shelves.

Now, to manage their toys. If your pets are like mine, their toys end up all over the house and yard, so having a play station will help. There’s no perfect way to avoid toys on the floor and having to pick them up at night. You want them to play when they want, so either keep toys accessible or rotate a few each day. I prefer letting mine choose their toys, as picking up two or ten makes little difference. If you’re going to have them within their reach, start by having just one place where they get put away each night. A quick grab and drop is better than stepping on one of their squeaky toys in the middle of the night. Install a toy hammock in a corner of the room. This is a great way to store plush toys and keep them off the floor. There are all kinds of attractive containers. If you don’t have a chewer, baskets and vintage wooden crates look nice. How about a large decorative ice trough or vintage milk crate? In my retreat, I have 12

THE PHYSICAL BENEFITS OF LIVING WITH PETS

By Jamie Lee

P

ets bring immense joy, companionship, and love into our lives, but their impact goes beyond mere emotional support. Research has consistently shown that sharing our homes with furry companions offers a wide range of physical health benefits. From increased physical activity to a strengthened immune system, the presence of pets can have a transformative effect on our overall well-being.

ENCOURAGING AN ACTIVE LIFESTYLE

One of the most evident physical benefits of living with pets is the encouragement of an active lifestyle. Dogs, in particular, require regular exercise, and as responsible pet owners, we must meet their needs. Daily walks, jogs, or play sessions not only provide essential physical activity for our pets but also motivate us to stay active. The accountability of meeting their exercise requirements often inspires us to lace up our shoes and head out for a brisk walk or run, benefiting both us and our furry companions.

BOOSTING CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH

Engaging in regular physical activity with pets contributes to improved cardiovascular health. Exercise, such as playing fetch or participating in agility training, elevates heart rate, strengthens the heart muscles, and enhances overall cardiovascular function. Studies have shown that pet owners, especially dog owners, tend to have lower blood pressure, reduced cholesterol levels, and a decreased risk of heart disease.

MANAGING WEIGHT AND REDUCING OBESITY

Living with pets can also help in managing weight and reducing the risk of obesity. Daily exercise routines with pets burn calories, promoting weight management and preventing weight gain. Additionally, the responsibility of caring for pets often leads to a more structured daily routine, which includes meal times and regular exercise, creating a healthier lifestyle overall.

INCREASING PHYSICAL ENDURANCE

Pets, particularly dogs, can improve our physical endurance over time. Regular exercise with dogs, such as longer walks or hiking, gradually 14

Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine • January/February 2025

enhances our stamina, allowing us to engage in more extended periods of physical activity. This increased endurance can extend beyond walks with our pets and positively impact other aspects of our lives, such as participating in sports or other recreational activities.

STRENGTHENING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

Contrary to popular belief, living with pets can actually strengthen our immune system. Studies have shown that early exposure to pets during childhood can reduce the risk of developing allergies and asthma. The presence of pets exposes individuals to diverse microbial communities, which can enhance immune system development and reduce hypersensitivity to allergens.

ENHANCING PAIN MANAGEMENT AND RECOVERY

Pets have been recognized for their ability to enhance pain management and aid in the recovery process. Animal-assisted therapy programs have demonstrated significant benefits in reducing pain and improving physical function in individuals with chronic conditions or recovering from surgery. The presence of pets can alleviate anxiety and stress, leading to a more positive mindset and enhanced healing.

LOWERING STRESS AND BLOOD PRESSURE

The soothing presence of pets has a profound impact on stress reduction. Studies have shown that interacting with pets can lower cortisol, a stress hormone, and increase oxytocin, a hormone associated with bonding and relaxation. This decrease in stress levels has a positive ripple effect on our physical health, including a reduction in blood pressure and a lowered risk of stressrelated conditions. The physical benefits of living with pets extend far beyond the emotional support they provide. Pets actively contribute to our physical health and well-being, promoting an active lifestyle, boosting cardiovascular health, managing weight, and strengthening our immune system. Their presence encourages us to exercise, increases our physical endurance, and aids in pain management and recovery. Additionally, the stress-reducing effects of living with pets lead to lower blood pressure and improved overall health. TAKE ME WITH YOU! By C.A. Ritz

Home Alone?

Ever been accidently left alone at home? Years back the hit movie highlighted the plight of a forgotten youngster who concocted his own emergency home security plan. He was eventually reunited with his family. There are also stories of pets trying to get back to their owners which pull at our heart strings.

Pets Left Behind

In reality, pets get displaced. Owners move and leave pets behind. Sadly, some people must leave their pets with family or friends. Unfortunately, other animals get released thoughtlessly in parks, or worse, have been left in homes to fend for themselves. Results can be tragic.

TRAVEL SAFELY

If you will be relocating with pets, here are some tips:

Secure Your Pet

Be sure to use safe transport carriers for kitties. There are vest harnesses and seats especially for dogs and cats, too. Animals left loose during travel can cause, or be thrown about in, an accident. Injury may occur without using safety measures.

✓ Food and Water: Plan a feeding schedule during your trip. Take water and food along and plan for potty breaks. Pet liner pads can be useful. Be sure to provide adequate space with favorite blankets, flat pillows, or mats for both physical and emotional comfort.

✓ Prepare: Let your pets become familiar with carriers. Weeks before a trip, let them go in and out freely. Feed or give treats inside the carrier cage to allow happy associations. ✓ Kitty Litter: Carry litter for cats, a pan, scooper, paper towels, and small disposable trash bags. Remember to avoid letting kitty roam in car and keep your car doors closed when stopping for potty breaks.

REST OF THE STORY

Sammy Grey and Mimow, our two felines, are traveling soon with us to another home in another city in another US state. They will benefit from people who have contributed to our knowledge, understanding, and shaping a plan to bring them with us.

Temperature Inside Vehicle

Temperatures in cars can jump 20 degrees higher than outside within 10 minutes; 30 degrees in 20 minutes. Cold weather is just as dangerous to thin, young, and old creatures as heat. So, never turn off the engine and leave an animal in the car!

TIPS FOR CAR TRANSPORT ✓ Try a test-drive: See if your pet travels calmly by driving around the neighborhood. ✓ Get a pet wellness check: Before an extended trip, get your pet checked. Request medical documents to take with you and discuss with your veterinarian use of calming sprays for high-anxiety cats, micro-chips, medicines, or shot updates. 18

If you are moving with your pet, there is much research online to aid your transition. Pets don’t need to be left behind. If you are unable to take them along, leave them with friends, relatives, or at least a no-kill shelter in hopes of adoption. Pet Scene Magazine provides a list of rescues and shelters: https://lvpetscene.com/rescues-shelters/.

VOLUNTEERING WITH ANIMALS Good for Body and Mind! By Aleza Freeman

After surviving a car crash in her early 20’s, Kimberley Dillon Scott heard time and time again she was still alive for a reason. As a result, she put immense pressure on herself to achieve greatness.

“When I was walking dogs around the park I was in the best shape of my life,” she recalls. “Mentally, being out in the fresh air is good and it stimulates you because you’re focused on someone other than yourself.”

More than two decades later, Scott realizes her life purpose wasn’t to solve world hunger or cure cancer. It was to help place more than 200 greyhounds in loving homes–an act of kindness that improved her physical and mental well-being.

These days, Rosen is more inclined to write a check or donate animal supplies than to foster or walk dogs. “When I’m at home surrounded by my dogs, I’m happy,” she says. “Emotionally they become your heart. Physically, I think it helps people become younger.”

“I wanted to feel like I am part of something bigger and this did that for me,” explains Scott, who began volunteering for Las Vegas Greyhound Adoption and Rescue after visiting the track and seeing how poorly the racing dogs are treated. She played matchmaker for multiple families and their new best friends. She also made new friends herself, many of whom she’s been in touch with for over 20 years and counting.

Jude Kikuta, a volunteer for Hearts Alive Village (HAV) in Las Vegas since February 2023 also experiences health benefits from volunteering with the animal rescue.

“It made my heart warm thinking I was doing good for both dog and human,” she says, “and over time gave me relief from the pressure of achieving this great thing I was still alive for.” If you’re an animal lover looking to improve your mental or physical health, volunteering with an organization locally is a great way to hit the ground running. There are many animal welfare organizations in Las Vegas. So you won’t have to look far to find one worthy of your time. Multiple studies show that interacting with animals leads to health benefits for humans, including decreased cortisol, lower blood pressure, reduced loneliness, and mood improvement. A similar boost in well-being applies to volunteering since it encourages physical activity, walking, and movement, according to Carnegie Mellon University. Put the two together and it seems only natural that you’d be twice as likely to feel better, emotionally and physically. “It’s a terrific thing for your health,” says Sunny Rosen, 83, who has volunteered for local dog rescues for decades including Pawtastic Friends, Foreclosed Upon Pets International (FUPI), and Pawsitive Difference. 22

Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine • January/February 2025

“Walking dogs helps me get in much-needed exercise and be out in the fresh air,” she says, adding, “Dogs are my ikigai, a Japanese term that means ‘that which gives your life worth, meaning, or purpose.’” Kikuta is involved in a variety of pet-related volunteer activities, from socializing and walking dogs to feeding, cleaning kennels, and doing laundry. She sews “adopt me” bandanas for the holidays, groom dogs, and take pictures for the website–activities that satisfy and nurture her creative side. Through volunteering she’s become part of a team and has met wonderful, dog-loving, like-minded people. It also helps her mental health because she knows she’s making a difference in these dogs’ lives. “Spending quality time with a scared, shut down dog and teaching them to trust again is rewarding, as is seeing a long-time resident off to their forever home,” she says. “I have seen gratitude in the eyes of dogs that I have fostered or taken home for sleepovers; they are thankful for the kindness shared. Dogs ask for very little but give so much in return.”

Aleza Freeman is a freelance travel and entertainment writer, born and based in Las Vegas. She loves her pets more than coffee.

A few helpful products beyond the brush are: DENTAL WIPES These can help remove soft plaque and can be helpful particularly for cats and small dogs, and older dogs who might be sensitive to dental cleanings. They come in sheets or finger sleeves. The finger sleeve is my personal favorite. My small dog wasn’t happy about me sticking a brush in her mouth. I didn’t feel like I cleaning all her teeth. With a finger wipe I can wipe every tooth and also massage her gums. It makes the traditional toothbrushing more effective. DENTAL TREATS AND CHEWS have natural ingredients that help clean and reduce plaque buildup. They help keep your pet’s teeth and gums healthy and promote fresh breath.

The importance of daily dental care! What is one of the most important ways we can help keep our dogs and cats healthy? Okay, the title of the article probably gave it away, but it’s true. Daily dental care is critical to the health and wellbeing of our pets. However, some interesting findings from a number of studies showed that less than 30% of pet parents brush their pet’s teeth, and, that about half the parents that do brush their pet’s teeth do it only once or twice a week. Many stated that they see dental chews as an alternative to brushing. Medical studies show that more than 70% of pets develop oral disease by the age of three. Unfortunately, many pet parents are unaware of the serious health risks poor dental care can have on our pets.

Why it’s important… what is dental disease? Dental disease is an infection of the teeth and gums and is the most common major health problem of cats and dogs. Dental problems begin with a build-up of plaque on teeth which if not removed by brushing results in tartar. Some symptoms of gum disease in dogs and cats are bad breath, red, swollen or bleeding gums, buildup of plaque and tartar, and loose teeth. Gingivitis and periodontal disease can lead to more serious health conditions including heart or kidney disease. Daily dental care can be challenging. The good news is that there are a lot of products available to assist us. A recent feature in Pet Age Magazine titled Beyond the Brush asked What is the best way to clean a dog or cat’s teeth? The answer: However they will allow! So true. They recommended some helpful products but stated, “in addition to traditional brushes and pastes, of course”. Generally, it is recommended to brush your pet’s teeth once a day preferably or at least every other day. 26

Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine • January/February 2025

ANOTHER OPTION IS DENTAL GEL. Designed for brush-

free teeth cleaning. The gel sticks to your pet’s teeth for a longer time. It contains ingredients to remove plaque and help kill bacteria. Here are a few tips of encouragement for starting a daily dental care routine that might be helpful if this is new to you or if you’re one of the many pet parents who are reluctant to do it.

1 START SMALL.

Gradually introduce your pet to the method or product you decide to use. Set goals for yourself. Initially do it once a week for a stated time. Then add more days until you reach the desired goal of once a day.

2 BE RELAXED AND POSITIVE. Our pets definitely pick

up on our emotions. If we are tackling dental care with dread and fear, they will respond accordingly. Relax, smile, and in a cheerful voice let them know it’s dental time. LOL – they probably won’t wag their tails and get all happy and excited but hopefully they’ll cooperate with you.

3 BE PERSISTENT. It is as important part of caring for your pet’s health and happiness – now and for the future!

FEBRUARY

NATIONAL CAT HEALTH MONTH

It’s a great time to celebrate our cats and let them know how much we love and appreciate them. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to ask ourselves if we are meeting all of their needs. Cats are unique and often we misunderstand them and fail to create an environment that meets their needs. We provide for their basic needs but are we providing for enrichment and play. Enrichment means improving or enhancing the living environment of our pets for greater health, longevity and quality of life.

O

ne way to enrich their lives is to safely explore the outside together. Screened-in porches or cat enclosures are popular. A less expensive option is a pet tent. It is easily set up and provides some contact with the outdoors. Ideal for letting your cat be with you when you’re outside. My ultimate favorite is a pet stroller. Some cats can be trained to walk with a harness and a leash adding exercise along with the joy of being outside. Another way to enhance their lives is by providing opportunities for play and predatory behavior. Cats are natural hunters and in the great outdoors without human caretakers would spend a great deal of their time hunting for food. For cats, play is more than just having fun. It helps them satisfy their basic predatory instincts. Kittens are naturally playful yet engaging adult cats in meaningful play can be challenging. Play that mimics predatory behaviors exercises the mind and body helping to reduce boredom and obesity.

Play with your food!

Parenting a pet is often compared with parenting children. There is one importance difference though. We usually tell children to “stop playing with your food” whereas with our furry feline children it’s a good idea to encourage them to play with their food. There is a category called foraging toys which includes food puzzles and treat dispensers which help satisfy a cat’s natural instinct to search for food. Last year I switched my cat to a mostly wet food diet supplemented with some dry food. I use a maze or tower 28

Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine • January/February 2025

type dispenser and also a few smaller ones designed to dispense treats or dry food when played with. It encourages slower eating and simulates hunting for his food. I also use a DIY feeding game using little mice and other small prey and small plastic containers. I put two or three treats or dry food in the container and top it with a mouse or feathered prey. I hide these in a variety of places throughout the house for him to hunt and catch. It’s also very important to include interactive playtimes with your cat in your daily schedule. Short regular play sessions are best. Interactive toys such as wand-type toys with feathers whizzing through the air or mice moving erratically on the floor resemble the prey cats innately hunt are great toys for these play sessions. Battery or remote controlled toys simulate the movement of small animals. These play sessions provide positive times to bond with your furry feline.

Enjoy and have fun with your furry feline. Remember cats crave attention and love from their humans. Celebrate this month with additional healthy doses of cuddling, snuggling and togetherness.

WINTER FUN Sometimes the cold, blustery days of winter keep us from getting out and enjoying the outdoors with our pets. Although we do not typically have to deal with the snow and ice that many people do, our shorter, colder days still compel us to stay inside. Thankfully for both pets and people, there are still many fun activities that can be enjoyed indoors.

MAKE YOUR OWN PET TOYS

No matter how MANY toys your pet already has, a new toy can provide hours of enjoyment for both pets and owners. Without a doubt, some of the most entertaining toys are those you can make yourself! With a little creativity and items you already have around the house, you can make all kinds of fun toys. Since dogs always seem to enjoy sock-type toys, dig out an old large sock and stuff an empty plastic soda bottle in it without the lid. (The lid could be a potential choking hazard.) If the bottle opening is wide enough, put a hard-crunchy dog treat inside. (The tighter the treat fits, the better. You don’t want it to easily fall out.) Then, sew up the end of the sock or tie it tightly. The rattling of the treat inside the bottle will peak your pup’s curiosity when you throw it across the room. If they do manage to get the treat out, at least it’s edible!

CREATE AN INDOOR AGILITY COURSE

If you have enough space indoors, you can build a dog agility course using everyday household items. You can make tunnels out of tables and sheets, followed by a row of chairs to weave around. Couch cushions also make great obstacles to jump over. See how many cushions your dog can successfully jump over before the cushions topple over. For cats, you can also create an indoor play area using old shipping boxes. To build a cat tunnel, gather up your old shipping boxes of similar sizes. Cut the tape on the bottom of the boxes and opens them up completely. Using boxes of similar sizes, open them up and slide them together so the flaps overlap each other. The length of your tunnel will be determined by the number of boxes you choose to use. Reinforce the spots where the boxes overlap with some strong, heavy-duty tape. Use long strips of tape that cannot be easily pulled off or swallowed by your cat. (You may have to re-tape it a few more times after vigorous use.) Sometimes cats enjoy having holes cut out in sections of the tunnel as an alternative exit. You can also use the holes to pop in their featherduster toy from time to time. Tossing in their favorite toys will help them discover how FUN your newly created tunnel can be! 34

Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine • January/February 2025

COOK UP SOME HOMEMADE DOG TREATS

For an afternoon of fun and good conversation, invite a friend over to help you make some homemade dog treats. There are many great dog treat recipes available online and most are incredibly easy to make. You might try making 2 or 3 recipes of different flavors so your dog can determine which one he likes the best. Since most recipes only require mixing and baking, you and your friend will have ample time to plan your next Puppy Party together. Consider inviting a few friends over with their dogs for an afternoon of playtime and taste-testing your new dog treats. Your 4-legged guests might also like to try your indoor obstacle course while they await the dogtreat sample platter. It shouldn’t take long to determine which homemade treats are a hit and which ones should be scratched from the recipe book. You can even prepare some treat-filled goodie bags for each of your guests to take home with them.

Whether it’s making toys, building tunnels or baking treats, indoor pet activities CAN be fun! All you need is a little creativity and a willing, playful pet participant.

RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP Month

Our pets depend on us for food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Here are a few ways to be a P-awesome Pet Parent! HAVE YOUR PET SPAYED OR NEUTERED. Responsible pet owners help control the pet population. Homeless and unwanted pets are a serious problem. Plus, spayed and neutered pets tend to live longer!

PICK A PET THAT FITS YOUR LIFESTYLE. Make sure you do your research and planning before getting a pet.

PET PROOF YOUR HOME.

Keep your pet healthy by making sure products and foods that can harm them are kept in secure locations.

CARE FOR YOUR PET.

Regular visits to the vet and groomer are important to your pet’s health and well-being.

ALWAYS KEEP AN ID TAG ON YOUR PET. It’s also a good idea to get your pet microchipped to help identify them if they are lost or stolen.

TEACH YOUR DOG GOOD MANNERS.

GIVE YOUR PETS THE EXERCISE THAT THEY NEED.

All pets need regular exercise to stay fit and healthy. Pets who do not get enough exercise tend to develop behavioral issues.

FEED YOUR PET PROPERLY.

Keeping your pet on a regular, portion controlled diet will help with weight management and prevent healthrelated problems.

PICK UP AFTER YOUR DOG.

Carry dog waste bags with you on walks and keep your neighborhood clean.

SOCIALIZE YOUR PET.

Meeting people and other pets improves the confidence of your pet.

KEEP YOUR DOG FROM BARKING EXCESSIVELY.

Dogs should at least understand basic direction like “sit” and “stay”.

Constant barking often signifies boredom. If your dog’s a barker, try to determine the cause. Keep your neighbors happy.

KEEP YOUR PET ON A LEASH.

LOVE YOUR PET!

Unless your pet is in a secure, fenced area keep them on a leash.

Your pet craves your love, attention and care. Show them the love and devotion they show you!
