Animal Laws – PET LIMITS

Do you know how many pets you are allowed to have in your household?

Animal or pet laws are always changing – sometimes changing in reaction to problems or public perception and sometimes evolving because of increased knowledge or understanding about pets. Pet laws define our rights and responsibilities as pet “owners”.

Many people are not aware of the limits or restrictions that cities or counties place on the number of pets allowed in a household. For Clark County residents there are slightly different limits depending on where you live. Clark County includes five cities: Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson, Mesquite, Boulder City plus the Unincorporated Areas.

The pet limits for the cities of Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, and Henderson are: No more than three dogs, three, cats, or three ferrets over the age of three months. However, for the City of Las Vegas the age for cats and ferrets is over four months. The pet limits for the unincorporated areas of Clark County are no more than three dogs or three cats over the age of three months. The city of Mesquite limits are no more than three dogs, cats, or ferrets over the age of three months. There is a combined limit of five animals per household. Boulder City has a three animal limit of any combination of dogs, cats, or ferrets over the age of four months.

Pet Fancier Permits (dogs or cats) can be applied for to increase the pet limits for a household. Check with the animal control department in the city or area where you live for more information. These permits require an annual inspection and fee.

Ways to

Strengthen your

Bond

with your dog

We all want to have that magical bond with our dog. You know the one.

The one Lassie had with Timmy, Rin Tin Tin and his master, Old Yeller and his boy, Scooby and Shaggy, Sandy and Annie, even Pluto & Mickey Mouse.

Dogs are called man’s best friend for a reason. They are our companions & partners. They cheer us up when we are down. They snuggle with us when we are tired. They play with us when we are energetic. They are a part of our lives in so many ways. But how do WE get this bond?

here are many ways to have a strong bond with your canine companion. Here is a list of ways to create a strong bond; many of which are already part of your everyday life!

SPEND TIME WITH YOUR DOG. You need to spend a portion of your daily life with your dog. Just be together. Curl up with a book, watch a movie, and work on the computer with your dog curled up beside you. I have several dogs in my pack and we each relate to one another differently, however, we all have a strong bond. Everyone has a different view on furniture and pets. I have a dog-allowed couch.

I sit on it with one dog curled at my legs and the other two are on dog beds at my side. Even though I am focused on something else, I acknowledge them regularly. Whether it is with a soft pet, a look, a smile, or just touching each other, we are aware of one another. This is a very important aspect of developing the critical bond everyone desires.

CONSISTENT RULES - Consistency is very important. It does not matter what your rules are, but they need to be consistent.

Many people say you need to have rules that establish dominance like always going through the door first or eating first. These, in themselves, are not really important for dominance, but consistency is. Some of my personal rules include sitting for the leash, waiting at doors until I say they can go through, and waiting to take food until I give the OK. TRAINING AND MANNERS - You do not have to teach your dog to be the next obedience champion. Training can be for show but it can also be teaching them the basic skills to live in a polite and peaceful way. Your training level and routine, and it is a routine, is something you need to stick with. Some sort of basic practice routine, whether it is five minutes every other day or two hours every day, is important.

EXERCISE – Just like with people, dogs need regular exercise for their health and peace of mind. Otherwise it does not matter how 6

well behaved they are. The rule of thumb is a tired dog is a happy dog. Exercise is not just having a yard. They need to have engaging exercise on a regular basis. This can be play time with other doggy friends, walks around the block, hiking, playing ball/Frisbee or, a dog sport like agility, or another activity that involves physical exertion.

When I am unable to exercise my dogs I have trained my dogs to run on the treadmill. They love it and it gives them a chance to stretch and move while I am doing other things. Of course, I keep my eye on them for safety.

PLAY - You need to play with your dog. Play is a great way to build your relationship and it’s just plain fun!! Think about it, what do you do with your friends, you play. Play needs to be something you both enjoy and can do together. The play activity can be something from the exercise list but the key, however, is doing and enjoying it together.

GO PLACES TOGETHER - When it is possible, and safe, a great way to keep your relationship growing is to go places together. Whether it is doing the drive through at the bank, driving out to the hiking trails, or a road trip. Dogs love to do things with you.

In a pack there is down time when everyone rests together, plays together and daily exercise when everyone travels out to scavenge or hunt. There is consistent structure within the pack and one imposed by the world they live in. Most of all they learn what works and what doesn’t work in their world. You are becoming part of the pack by doing a version of these with your dog. Dogs are man’s best friend but we have to do our part to strengthen that bond. Most important is to think of these activities as fun things to do with your dog, and ENJOY THEM!

What is spay and neuter?

Spay refers to the surgical sterilization of a female animal and neuter refers to the surgical sterilization of a male animal.

Commonly people will use terms such as “fixed” or “castrated” which also mean that their animal has been surgically sterilized.

Why should I have my pet spayed/neutered?

Having your pets spayed or neutered will allow them to live longer, healthier lives and overall you and your pet will be much happier.

BENEFITS OF SPAYING a Reduces the risk of life threatening uterine infections and mammary gland tumors. Studies show that spaying before the first heat cycle can reduce mammary gland tumors by 99%. a Eliminates dealing with undesirable heat cycles and attracting unwanted males. a Even though roaming is less common in females, some females exhibit this behavior to find a mate and spaying will help decrease this urge. a Eliminates unwanted pregnancies and potential C-sections, which can be rather expensive.

When can this procedure be performed?

By law, Las Vegas residents are required to spay/neuter their dogs and cats 4 months of age or older. However there are a few exceptions to this rule: a If the animal is used for law enforcement, search and rescue or as a service animal a If the animal is unable to breed or if a veterinarian confirms the animal is unfit for surgery at that time. a If the owner has a valid dog fancier’s, cat fancier’s, breeder’s or professional animal handler’s permit.

Spaying and neutering is an important health decision you will have to make for your pet. Speak with your veterinarian and he/she will decide when is the best time to have this procedure performed.

BENEFITS OF NEUTERING a Decreases the risk of prostate problems and testicular tumors. a Decreases urges to roam in order to find a mate. Roaming increases the risk of injury from traffic or fights with other animals. a Helps decrease spraying or marking behavior commonly exhibited by both intact male dogs and cats. a Decreases unwanted aggressive behavior or even unwanted sexual behavior towards people or objects.

The community will also benefit from having your pets spayed and neutered. This procedure will help reduce the number of strays and euthanasia’s that have to be performed on unwanted animals each year. Also stray or roaming animals can cause damage to properties, scare people, and even cause injury to themselves, people in the community, or wildlife.

Coconut oil is becoming more popular as people discover the health benefits of cooking and baking with it. Many people now use coconut oil as a moisturizer for their skin and also for a hair conditioner. It is proving to be a very versatile product for people and their pets.

It can be given internally or applied externally.

A few reasons for applying coconut oil externally: •

Helps clear up skin conditions like eczema, rashes, or itchy skin Helps improve your pet’s coat – keeping it soft and sleek and decreases “doggy” odor Helps disinfect cuts and helps heal wounds faster

Health Benefits of

Coconut Oil

There are many benefits of giving coconut oil internally to our pets.

Coconut oil is high in saturated fats. Cats and dogs are carnivorous and would have consumed a high amount of saturated fat in the wild.

Using coconut oil as a diet supplement is a way to make sure your pet is getting enough saturated fat in their diets.

Coconut oil promotes natural healing – it helps fight bacteria, viruses, and fungal infections and has antioxidant properties. It can also aid with your pet’s digestion.

Feeding Guidelines – When beginning to supplement your pet’s diet with coconut oil, start slow and increase gradually. Giving too much coconut oil too soon can cause digestive and detox issues. The recommended dose for dogs is about 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight. Initially use 1/4 of the recommended dosage and build up to the full dosage over a four week period. The recommended dose for cats is 1/4 teaspoon per ten pounds of body weight. Again work up gradually to the full dosage. If your cat is finicky about food supplements, you can just put a small amount on their paw. They’ll lick it off and get their coconut oil that way.

KEEPING YOUR PETS SAFE

CAN PETS PLANTS CO-EXIST? AND

F

or many people a house is not a home without houseplants… and also true for many, a house is not a home without a pet. The question is can pets and plants co-exist in the same home?

I recently added a new furry family member to my household – a cute rambunctious kitten named Rowdy.

His personality and name match perfectly. Immediately I noticed his instant attraction to my many house plants especially the large ones and the hanging plants.

My first concern obviously was for his safety. Initially I put all the plants in a safe room until I could check on the toxicity levels. Many of the more popular and common houseplants are toxic to our furry family members. My plan for peaceful and safe co-existence included re-homing many of the toxic plants, keeping a few of my favorite toxic plants in the safe room, and replacing the toxic plants with safe plants in the other areas of my home.

We’ve shown a few of the popular toxic plants and a few of the safer plants to help you identify your plants. It is important, however, to realize that ingesting any plant material can create problems for your pet even if the plant is not considered toxic.

If your cats love to nibble and graze you might consider adding cat grass to your collection of houseplants. My cats are nibblers and grazers – I usually have a fresh supply available for them. It is best to use certified organic cat grass seeds. They’re easy to grow and safe for your cats.

SEPARATION ANXIETY [ [

If our dogs could talk, I believe that this would be their plea.

S

ome are comfortable being alone, however, there are others who watch your every move regardless if they’re in a dead sleep with legs, nose, eyes and ears twitching, in the middle of an actionpacked dream. They will still wake up to follow us even after we take painstaking measures to sneak out of a room. By painstaking, I mean carefully avoiding creaks in the floorboards, softly climbing over toys, chairs and whatever else might be in our way— just to leave for a minute.

Sound familiar?

That’s only a slight case of separation anxiety—nothing urgent.

But, in severe cases, dogs will chew anything and everything, bark, whine, howl, pace, have accidents in the house and become inconsolable until you’re home.

EXERCISE FOR A HEALTHY DOG IS KEY. Taking your dog on a long walk in the morning and/or evening prior to leaving the house makes them tired which in turn, lessens their anxiety.

SET “FALSE ALARMS” Have you ever noticed that your dog knows your next move before you do?

From putting down a fork at dinner, to putting on your sneakers. One way to break them from knowing your routine is to send false alarms. Put on your sneakers, but then watch television. Open the front door, and then sit down. Change the routine that you use before leaving the house.

If you’ve already established that they are not ill but simply missing you, there’s some things that you can do.

INCREMENTS Part of the reason your dog loses their mind when you leave is that they don’t know when you’ll return.

Start by leaving the house for twenty minutes. Then gradually increase it to thirty, forty, etc. While they are alone, make sure they’re in an area where they can’t hurt themselves.

I’m not a trainer, but I’ve had issues with separation anxiety with some of my own dogs and it’s stressful for both the owner and the dog. The owner feels trapped in their own house and the dog has an unhealthy attachment to their owner.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

While there are drugs on the market to pacify your dog’s fears, there’s no super drug, so it’s wise to modify the behavior.

Unfortunately, it won’t happen overnight.

In addition, don’t fuss over them for at least ten minutes before you leave and ten minutes after you return. It’s difficult, but when you make a fuss, you’re drawing attention to the very fact that you are leaving or returning. In essence, they think that this is a time to become excited.

Instead, you want to convey that it is a time to be calm. If your dog associates excitement with your arrival, they will always be anxious for that particular moment in time.

It’s a slow process, but with persistence and understanding, it’s one that you can work on with your pooch and achieve results. Keep in mind, in some extreme cases, it might be necessary to consult a

Dogs aren’t the only pet that can be prone to separation anxiety. Our lovable felines can spend hours missing their owners as well and many of the same tips apply.

Just like with dogs, the anxiety can be diminished by keeping your cat occupied and exercised while you’re away. To do so, you can buy some interesting cat toys to keep their minds busy, as well as a perch or climbing apparatus for them to “exercise away their worries.”

In addition, distraction can help them cope with your absence, so you may want to leave treats scattered around the house hidden in various places where your kitty can sniff them out. If your cat loves to eat and/or hunt, this gives them something to actually look forward to while you’re gone and keeps them busy for a little while.

As with dogs, if the anxiety becomes unbearable, it’s best to contact a professional for additional guidance.

You can help a homeless dog or cat by opening your home and heart while her forever home turns up. It will involve some effort, commitment and time on your part; however the process can be eased by working with a reputable rescue group who will assist you with the appropriate preparation, integration, and consistent support during the fostering period. And the experience can be highly rewarding for you!

Things to Consider

Often, we have little, inaccurate or no information about the dogs or cats in rescue. It may be that the pet was surrendered due to financial hardship and is otherwise perfect, but it is also possible that the pet had behavior issues that the family did not want to deal with such as dog/dog reactivity, dog/people reactivity, destructive chewing, resource guarding, soiling, separation anxiety, barking, digging, etc… and when fostering a pet, you should be aware that they may exhibit behavior problems and be prepared to address these problems safely and humanely.

While fostering the pet you are helping prepare them to present well at adoption events, but most importantly to be a loving companion for a family. Many times you are teaching the dog how to do something for the first time, such as getting in a car, climbing stairs, crossing thresholds or even playing with a toy. The foster period can range from days to months and you should be prepared to deal with any unexpected challenges that may present such as an unexpected trip or a behavior problem.

Most rescue groups have a limited amount of foster homes ready to take in pets and may not be able to take the pet back right away if you change your mind about fostering.

Interested in Fostering?

The rescue group should meet with you to learn about your specific interest in the type of pet you wish to foster, such as

puppy, senior, special needs, small, large or breed specific. They will also be interested in learning about your lifestyle, schedule and will evaluate your set up at home. They should know about your existing pets, their temperament, play styles and acceptance of another pet in the household. The rescue group should work to find a dog or cat that will be a good match for your family and will want to make sure everyone is on board with a consistent plan of care for the foster pup or kitty. They will also arrange for a meet and greet and will assist you with introducing the dog to your family of existing pets as well.

The rescue group should also work with you to develop an appropriate plan for socialization, integration into the family and should assist you with information on how and what social skills to teach your foster dog. They will have ideas for appropriate enrichment, exercise and effective use of space, barrier and crate training. Foster dogs should always be set up for success and everything should be taught using positive reinforcement. Important to note that foster parents should be aware of restrictions by landlord or homeowners association pertaining to pet limit, weight limit or breed discrimination. Also to check exclusions in homeowner’s insurance.

How to Prepare

By spending a little bit of time preparing for the arrival of your foster pet you can help create a less stressful and successful arrangement that will help your foster pet settle with ease into your home.

Your foster pet should live indoors with the family. They should not be left outside unsupervised and should not be allowed to run loose or go to the dog park. Scheduled playdates with friends you know and trust are typically a good idea and approved by most rescue groups.

When initially bringing a new pet home plan on using barriers, baby gates and crates to train your foster pet. This will help create safe and calm space for all of the animals in your family. If you do not have access to this

equipment and cannot purchase it you can ask rescue group to help you obtain this.

You should conduct a safety assessment of exterior and interior spaces such as unsafe fencing, toxic plants, pesticides, chemicals, cleaning products, furniture, electrical wires, valuables that may be ruined, etc.

What does Rescue Group Provide?

Most rescue groups will pay all expenses including veterinary care, food and behavior assessments and training, equipment and other supplies. You may choose to help pay for some of this if your pocketbook allows. Your foster pet should be be spayed/ neutered, immunized and microchipped.

The rescue group should be committed to helping the foster pet integrate comfortably into your home and should offer support along the way. They should also be willing to take the pet back if significant unforeseen problems arise and should be marketing the pet for adoption through social networks and/or adoption events.

For Animal Lovers

Choosing the right career can seem like a monumental decision. Finding a career that is interesting, fulfilling and personally rewarding can be an important part of one’s overall happiness in life. Those who have a love for animals often try to find a career that fulfills the desire to work with them and improve their quality of life. While the desire to become a veterinarian often comes to mind first, there is actually a vast array of animal-related careers that one can choose from. Reviewing some of these careers and their educational requirements may be helpful in finding the perfect job for an animal lover.

Competition is highly competitive for acceptance into these schools. Of all the careers involving animals, becoming a veterinarian requires the most education.

In addition to careers in veterinary medicine, there are also many careers involving animals that require much less specialized training. Many animalrelated jobs involve “on-the-job” training --working and learning from others who have valuable job experience. animal attendants, kennel workers, pet groomers, and animal trainers are all jobs that are typically taught through on-the-job training or through an apprenticeship. Many such jobs can be found on either a part-time or full-time basis. Potential employers for these positions include kennel companies, grooming businesses, pet stores, stables, animal hospitals, and animal shelters.

One of the best ways to enter into any of these careers is to start with volunteering.

Steps To Keep Your Pet-Friendly

ell, another year has come and gone and we’re thinking about what resolutions we’re going to make, and then probably not keep. There’s something about the word “resolution” that I have come to dislike. Instead I like steps. “This year, these are the steps I’m going to take to…”

To me, resolutions are a set up for failure. We all have good intentions, but days turn into weeks, weeks into months, and months into the next year. Whereas, by taking projects a step at a time, step-by-step they will get done.

One of the additional projects we have with pets is keeping things clean. Yes, we have that with the rest of our family but pets add to the list as they don’t have their own chores to do around the house.

So what steps are you going to take this year to keep your petfriendly home clean? Start with just the top three things that cause you agita. What ways can you reduce the stress or eliminate it this year? Training? Other solutions? Maybe one of these seven will help.

What can you do while the coffee brews? My coffee takes eight minutes. So each morning I pick a different task to do during those eight minutes. I know everyone’s schedule is different and it’s hard to get five minutes for yourself, but you’ll be amazed what a difference those five minutes can make. If mornings don’t work for you, pick any part of the day. Set a timer and stick to five minutes. These are my eight minute quick cleans. u Wipe down the areas where their oil builds up from coming around a corner. u Run the sticky roller over the sofa to help control the dog hair. u Throw their blankets in the washer. u Quick dust of the areas which attract the most puppy hair. u Swifter the kitchen floor. Their hair loves to gather under my island and table. Goodness, sometimes I think I have ten dogs in the house. u Vacuum the family room or master bedroom. u Wipe down their water bowl mat and the floor around it. u Spot clean the kitchen floor where they’ve dribble water or paw spots from the yard.

None of these things take the place of my regular cleaning, but help with the day-to-day things that bother me so they don’t get out of control.

Watch when buying accessories with small intricate details and openings, they’re dust and pet hair catchers. We already have plenty of Vegas dust but we all know that pets generate even more with doors being opened and closed more often. And we bird lovers know that they produce a lot of dust from their dander.

Make sure to consider fabrics before buying anything. Are they pet friendly? If not, how are you going to keep them clean? I fell in love with a fabric that has a light background. I looked and looked for something else but always came back to the same one. I had to have it. I was using the fabric to reupholster a chair and ottoman in my family room. Unfortunately they are in a running path for the girls from the bedroom to the backyard, but there’s no other place for them. So I had to come up with a solution to keep the corner of the ottoman from getting dirty.

My old fabric was a dark solid so I had a throw on the ottoman, but I didn’t want to cover this one. My solution was to have a clear slip cover made for the ottoman.

It lets me enjoy my fabric and also keep it clean. When I have company I simply pull it off.

Having a clean home makes everyone feel better and lets us enjoy the beautiful things we have. Believe me I’m not a clean freak, I don’t have the time, but my eight minute coffee brew helps me keep my sanity in this busy world.
