considerations Part 2 of our series on planning for your pets Our relationship with animals began thousands of years ago. Slowly we started sharing our fires and food with them. They began performing a variety of task or jobs for us. We began letting them into our homes. For example, cats were “mousers” and lived in the basement. Over time our relationship with animals evolved to one of companionship. Gradually we opened our hearts and they became family. One survey indicated that 80% of the people who have pets consider them family. Animals lost most of their independence when we domesticated them. They are dependent on us and trust us to care for them. We plan to take care of them for as long as they live. We often overlook planning for them if they outlive us. The following are two options for you to consider:

PET TRUSTS – Nevada provides for pet trusts. A Pet

Trust is a trust created to provide for the care of a pet. The trust must be funded with assets and a trustee must be appointed to administer the trust. A trust can include very specific instructions about all aspects of your pet’s life. Creating a trust is a legal process, yet it is also important to include your personal wishes for your pet.

LAST WILL & TESTAMENT – A will is a legal alternative to a trust and may be all that you need or can aﬀord. This option includes your pet in your ‘Last Will & Testament,’ and provides for an appointment of a caregiver for your pet. A major drawback to a will is the potential for a long probate period. You definitely need to make provisions for short-term pet care during this period. The information above is for general information only. We encourage you to do further research on your own. It is also important to consult with an attorney who understands estate planning for pets to help you determine the best legal strategy for you and your pet. Healing Beneﬁts for our Pets

The healing quality of music for people is well known and documented. Music for animals is an exciting and relatively new field of study. One interesting area is research about the type of music animals prefer. What type of music do pets really like? Charles Snowdon, an animal psychologist, discovered that animals enjoy “species-specific music” or tunes designed using the pitches, tones and tempos that are familiar to their particular species. We sometimes assume that our pets enjoy our musical preferences. Our favorite music could be having an opposite eﬀect on our pets.

Animals enjoy some the same benefits of music that we do: Relieves Stress – play soothing music before stressful situations such as vet visits or grooming visits. Eases the Stress of Separation Anxiety – it has a calming influence when you’re not able to be with them. Provides Physical Benefits – the right music slows their heart rate, increases endorphin levels which creates relaxation and good feelings. Strengthens Immunity – music boosts the immune system which promotes health and wellness and helps fight disease. Music is being used in many shelters to create a positive “soundscape” to soothe the animals. Dr. Patricia McConnell, canine behavior expert, shared a few tips in a webinar,

“Canine Behavior and Acoustics. 1 These might be helpful to us as we consider adding music to our pet’s life. It is best to alternate periods of quiet with music. The choice of music is important. Classical music seems to work best with dogs. Be careful about using music to mask other sounds. The result can be extremely jarring and stressful. Your dog could associate the music with the jarring sounds and create more stress.

Sharing your love of music with your pet is beneficial for both of you. Letting your pet share their musical preferences with you might also be a fascinating and enjoyable experience!

Okay – now you might be asking yourself “how much stress is my pet experiencing”? An interesting theory is that we possibly could be the primary cause of their stress. We are aware of the role pets play in stress relief for people. We could be transferring our tension to our pets. The human-animal bond is so strong and our pets are so attuned to our feelings that they become stressed out because of us. 2 Be aware of the effect of certain types of music on your pet. See if you can determine the type of music your pet prefers. Who knows – they may even have a preference for a certain singer and perhaps even a certain song. I know Pat & Elvis certainly had very specific likes! Be aware of your own stress levels and the effect you might be having on your pet. You might need the benefits of music to promote an environment of peace and serenity for you and your pet.

His favorite was Love Letters in the Sand. Elvis rocked to all music by Elvis. My friends were amazed at their performances.

Pocket Pets

Most of us have discovered that it truly is a small world, after all. In the case of pocket pets, it is especially true. Pocket pets are any small mammal commonly kept as a household pet. The most common little ones are hamsters, gerbils, fancy mice, fancy rats, guinea pigs, chinchillas, sugar gliders, ﬂying squirrels, and hedgehogs. Most species are playful, non-aggressive, and nocturnal. Special care should be taken when handling them to prevent them from escaping or falling. While they may all be considered pocket pets, each breed have their own special needs and characteristics.

Hamsters According to Wikipedia, hamsters were first brought to the United States in 1938. According to the site, all modern hamsters go back to a single litter of hamsters taken to Palestine for scientific research in 1930. The life span of a hamster is an average of 18-36 months. They are the least hardy of the pocket pets. They are prone to develop stress-related diseases. They are also prone to bite when startled, so they might not be a good choice for a young child. Hamsters have pouches inside each cheek, where they store food for later. The pouches can become impacted if food gets stuck. If there seems to be a problem with eating, it would be a good idea to have your hamster examined. Normally hamsters should not be housed together because they will fight each other. Hamsters are big on exercise, so please make sure yours has an exercise wheel or ball. Hamsters also like to hide and sleep inside enclosed spaces, so you’ll need a small box with an entrance hole.

Guinea Pigs These little guys have been around for a long time. They were imported in the 1500’s to Europe from Peru. Because they were an oddity they were afforded a special status and were pets to the wealthy. However, due to their ability to reproduce quickly they rapidly spread throughout Europe and were readily available to the middle class. Guinea Pigs have an average life span of 5-6 years. They are calm, non-aggressive animals that rarely scratch or bite. They are very social and respond well to human handling. Their special needs include Vitamin C. They do not make their own so it must be provided on a daily basis. It can be added to the drinking water, as a food supplement, or a treat. Hay is a necessary food source. This provides the high fiber needed for this species. Timothy hay is best. They also need a supply of fresh vegetables. Guinea pig cages should be wide and long rather than tall because they do not jump or climb like other pocket pets.

Rats & Mice Fancy mice first became popular in Japan during the 1700’s due to their variety of colors. Collecting the mice became a such a pastime because many people experimented with new producing new colors. Their popularity soon spread to Europe and abroad. Just think of all the famous mice: Topo Gigio, Mickey and Minnie, Ratatouille, Mr. Jingles from The Green Mile and the rats in Willard (okay, not the best example). A mouse’s average lifetime is 12-36 months, wherein the rat’s is 26-40 months. Mice, particular the males, have a pungent, musky odor. They may be difficult to handle because of their small size and quick nature. They rarely bite unless provoked. Females can be housed together; however, males often fight and should not be housed together. Rats and mice are very prone to tumors, particularly breast tumors. You will need to check your rat or mouse frequently for lumps and bumps. Rats are very hardy when they are young, but tend to develop health problems as they age. Rats are usually very calms and do not bite. They are considered the most intelligent and most easily trained of the pocket pets.

With pocket pets, a little research and planning will go a long way. Housing requirements for each species varies. Bedding is important, but be sure to avoid cedar shaving as they have been shown to lead to respiratory problems. Shavings also need to be change frequently to avoid ammonia buildup and mold. There are special pelleted diets available for each species. A very common problem to these small animals is teeth overgrowth. They need to chew on rough materials to wear their teeth down, such as young tree branches. Again, be sure to research because branches such as cedar, plum and cherry are poisonous. As with any pet, these little critters need to be checked frequently for any change in behavior or appetite. With a little care and devotion, your pocket pet will be a delightful addition to your family. Be sure to check your local shelter before going to the local pet store. The shelters do receive various pocket pets from time to time and it would be wonderful to give a little one a new home with you. 10

KEEPING PETS SAFE DURING THE SUMMER By Dr. Kyle, DVM

As temperatures start to rise, and we reach the full heat of summer, there are several things we can do to help keep our furry friends safe.

At Home The hottest part of the day is 10:00am – 4:00pm, so if it is possible, keep pets indoors during this time of day. If pets have to be outside, be sure to provide them with shade from direct sunlight and plenty of fresh water. Water bowls can be ﬁlled with water and ice cubes to keep the water cool. Toys and treats can be frozen into larger blocks of ice to provide entertainment as well as help keep pets cool. The garden hose can be used to help cool off pets, but with caution. Water sitting in a garden hose can reach temperatures of 120 degrees or higher in as little as an hour in direct sunlight. This temperature is high enough to cause 2nd and 3rd degree burns, but this can be avoided by running the water for at least 2-3 minutes and testing it’s temperature before spraying down pets.

Most importantly, never keep your pets in the car. On a hot summer day the temperatures inside a car can reach over 140 degrees in less than 15 minutes.

Signs Of Heat Stroke When our pets get too hot, they can suffer from heat stroke. Signs of heat stroke include: excessive panting, salivation, weakness, listlessness, poor coordination, vomiting, diarrhea, shaking, collapse, and seizure. If any of these are noted, bring your animal to the veterinarian as soon as possible. While on the way to the veterinarian the pet should be cooled as much as possible with cool (not cold) water, fans, and air conditioning.

With the proper precautions, our pets can enjoy a safe summer!

Kiddie pools are another option for pets that are outside. They can be ﬁlled with water and ice to provide some summertime relief. The water should be changed at least once a day. If you have a pool in your backyard it should be fenced off to ensure your pet does not accidentally fall into it. If a fence is not possible, introduce your pet to the pool, and teach them where the stairs are located. This will allow them to get out of the pool in the event they accidently fall in, or if they try to cool off during the summer heat.

Away From Home When walking your pets this summer, remember that even as the sun goes down the asphalt and pavement can still be very hot, and unprotected paw pads can be burned. While hiking during the summer months, the rocks and stones may be hot enough to burn our pet’s paw pads. If possible walking or hiking should be done before the hottest part of the day. If pets are going to be out while it is hot, there are special boots they can wear that will protect their paws from being burned. Hairless pets, thin haired pets, and light colored pets are at an increased risk of being burnt by the sun. Sunscreen and protective clothing can be used to help prevent sunburns. 14

Humans are lucky. We wake up in the morning and follow the standard routine – brush our teeth, shower, and prepare for our day. Unfortunately, our dogs don’t share this same luxury.

I suppose we should be grateful, otherwise we’d probably find them relaxing in a cozy bubble bath, eating dog bones out of a martini glass and ringing a tiny bell for towel service – but they do need grooming.

enjoy valuable bonding time with their favorite person – you! It also enables you to feel any changes with your dog’s body, such as abrasions or bumps that may require medical attention.

Some may require a bath more often – especially if they are the type that rejuvenate in the comfort of a messy mud puddle every now and then...and a dog bath at home or the groomer is a great way to start. Since they do rely on us, however, they require a bit more.

But it doesn’t stop there. Their teeth need attention as well. Poor dental hygiene causes toothaches, infections, heart disease, and more. If your dog’s teeth need extensive work, your veterinarian may suggest a dental and if it’s not deemed safe, there are alternatives. You may want to inquire about antiseptic enzymatic gels or drops for their water or food and a toothbrush and toothpaste made specifically for dogs. Human toothpaste is toxic for dogs.

If you’ve ever been scratched by an enthusiastic pup, then you’ve probably realized that their nails can grow rather long in a short period of time and that they can leave quite an impressive scar! Clipping their nails keeps future injuries to a minimum. While some dogs don’t mind a manicure and pedicure, if yours likes to pile on the theatrics like mine do, a trip to the veterinarian or groomer will prove beneficial. They have the experience and manpower...plus your dog won’t hold you responsible! Next step – brushing. Dogs with thicker coats require daily brushing, while others may only require it a few times per week. This is not only good for their coat and skin, but they

Lastly, a dog’s ears are often neglected. Their inner ear should be pinkish in color and shouldn’t have an odor. If you notice your dog scratching their ears or shaking their head, that might indicate ear mites, and can eventually lead to infection or an aural hematoma. Your veterinarian can suggest a cleanser and can show you a proper procedure to ensure optimum results. Be gentle. While your pup may love the comforting ear rub, they usually don’t have the same predilection for ear cleaning. Puppies may adapt easier to a grooming routine than a senior, but the more it’s done, the more they grow accustomed. We can’t prevent every illness, but we can certainly make a continuous effort to keep our dogs as healthy and as well-groomed as possible. Note, if your dog is the type to voice their distaste for grooming by growling, it might be best to seek professional training advice. Seniors To The Rescue

No matter the age or ability anyone can help an animal in need. For a senior citizen moving into advanced years their pet is one of their most faithful companions. Their loyal dog or attentive cat ministers to their joy and contentment. Seniors from Atria Sutton on Flamingo making Snuggle Beddies.

In 2013, Gail Mayhugh had to make the decision to move her Mother, Terry into an assisted living community. Gail soon realized that Terry, who worked until she could no longer work, had few volunteer opportunities and was becoming idle and bored. She still wanted to be useful and have a purpose. As Gail met with caregivers and residents, she realized this challenge was common among seniors. Each had their own story and their own level of physical and intellectual mobility. Often she heard stories of their pets who meant so much to them. From the time she spent visiting, Gail recognized their lost connection to the community and their shared love for animals. The timing was perfect as Gail had become an animal rescue advocate, blogging about events and opportunities to help rescue animals and groups through www.VivaVegasPets.com. She learned of the staggering number of homeless pets and the overwhelming needs of shelters and rescue groups. Within weeks Gail and her Mother began Seniors to the Rescue, enlisting the cooperation of assisted living administrators. They formed an ever-growing team of senior volunteers to make Boo Boo Bags (first aid kits) and developed other goods to comfort rescue animals. Now these once-idle seniors find joy and meaning by helping animals in need and do so in memory of their own beloved pets.

Since inception, the seniors of Seniors To The Rescue have volunteered over 200 hours. They’ve donated 275 Boo Boo Bags to rescues, which they use to help raise donations and 125 Snuggle Beddies (pet fleece blankets) to shelters, which give comfort to pets waiting for their forever homes.

The Reading with Rascal Program Reading to a four-legged, furry friend is a fun way for children to sharpen their reading skills. A child’s success in school depends on great reading skills and this program is the perfect place to accomplish this by reading to therapy dogs. Why does it work? Dogs are nonjudgmental listeners. They listen attentively; don’t laugh or criticize. They allow children to read at their own pace.

It’s FREE!

The program is open to all ages. Adults visit, relax, love the dogs, and enjoy the children and refreshments. Children bring 3 or 4 of their favorite books and many will read to every dog there. Toddlers come and enjoy the dogs. All are welcome to come and join us. No church affiliation is necessary. No reservations are required – Refreshments are served all morning.

We all love our furry four-legged, two-legged, winged and reptile kids. I’ve shared with you how to decorate with them in mind, but what about decorating with them? Now I’m not saying to have them stuffed and mounted, but incorporating them into your décor. Here are six ways to celebrate your kids in style.

For some of us they are our only kids and for others, the rest of their kids. They are a focal and important part of our lives so why not make them a focal point of a room. Christie loved to play especially with her ball, so Artist Bert Hornbeck brought her to life in this 36 inch by 42 inch oil portrait hung in her client’s favorite spot.

I believe in being bold in your powder bath and making a statement. Don’t be afraid because it’s a small space. You and your guest are in and out in a few minutes, so why not decorate with Miss Kitty in mind? Instead of plain old paint, wallpaper it with a great pet print. If that’s too much of a commitment for you, have fun with wall decals. They work on our textured walls as long as you purchase the ones that rub-on versus press on.

Celebrate your pet in style in a guest room. Go all out with your bedding and just have fun.

Dress up your guest bath with a bold and colorful fabric shower treatment. And even sneak in a painted Macaw perched on your mirror.

Wall galleries are one of my favorite things to do. I like to use different types of artwork, add shelves, and use rub-on wall words. It doesn’t have to be a large focal wall but that odd wall you’ve always wondered what to do with. You can do a gallery of all the photos you’ve taken and mix in quirky and whimsy artwork. Or just have fun with all different types of pet art. If you’re a sheltie lover, do a wall of different sheltie images on different art mediums: metal, wood, framed, glass, stone, canvas.

If bold is not for you, accessories are a perfect way to have fun in any room. Pillows, throw rugs, ceramics, metal sculptures and picture frames are easy ways to decorate with your pet. Group them together for more impact.

Forever In Our Hearts

To know Pele is to love Pele! His life was nothing but amazing and the power he had to touch so many lives was proof of that! He gave strength to children, helping them read, courage to someone to help them feel safe and no longer fear dogs, confidence to other dogs so they could find their forever home, and most importantly he brought happiness to everything and everyone all the time. Letting him go was the hardest thing I ever had to do. I thought my world had come to an end, he was my life, my everything, how was I suppose to go on without him? As the days go by and I find myself reaching out to touch him and he’s not there, I remind myself of the promises we made to each other. I promised him that as hard as it may be, I WILL be okay and he promised me that he will always be with me. He continues to bring happiness to my life by showing me that I am surrounded by family and friends who have given me nothing but love and support, all of us will have a special place in our hearts for each other and that will be forever. “The Golden Pit Crew” will continue on brighter then ever because Pele would have it no other way. I loved Pele more than life itself and I’m proud to be a part of seeing his “power” continue to change lives. He was one very special dog and will now be a very special guardian angel.

Only put away your pet’s belongings when you feel it is the right time. It is your choice and you may never want to put the articles away.

 ALLOW SAD MOMENTS

Please allow the sad moments and tears to come. Tears are cleansing and will help you heal. The emptiness and hole in your heart will always be there but you will be able to move forward with your other life commitments.

 HONOR YOUR PET It is important to remember your pet on special days such 26

as your pet’s birthday or adoption, holidays, or other family events. These events are called triggers and are reminders that your pet is no longer there on special events. In spite of the sadness, it is important to find ways to honor your pet on these special occasions.

One autumn afternoon years ago my youngest child made an announcement. You guessed it. “Mom! Hey, Mom! I want to volunteer!” Of course we want our children to perform heroic selfless acts, but usually those words mean work for us. Volunteering at an animal shelter or rescue contributes to a child’s character, provides help for overworked staff, saves financially for the institution, and gives attention to needy pets while they wait for their forever homes. A few years later, with priceless parental pictures perched in my brain, I asked my girl what memories she had of volunteering. She described not the pictures I fathomed but warm fuzzy feelings. She went on to say, “I think it brought us together more. It made me feel like I was learning and helping in a safe environment because you were there.” Asking if she’d advise children to volunteer, she responded, “Always! It is the children who know how to cuddle best. Plus, if children volunteer, it’s almost like doubling or even tripling the number of volunteers because the parents have to come along too!” So, true. I am really looking forward to the day I overhear my grandchild say, “Hey, Mom! I want to volunteer!”

Good for Us in So Many Ways By Shannon Turpin There is something unique about horses that has intrigued mankind for thousands of years. With a magical combination of grace, beauty, spirit and strength, horses have unknowingly drawn us into a wonderful, mutually-beneficial relationship with them. We care for them, talk to them, and help them to stay happy and healthy. In return, they nuzzle us, listen to us, and allow us to enjoy the freedom of riding atop their backs. It’s a relationship that can’t really be explained unless you’ve experienced it firsthand. If you haven’t been around horses, or tried horseback riding, it’s an experience you should not miss!

Horseback riding is a physically and mentally healthy

activity that people of all ages can enjoy. Young and old alike will enjoy the thrill of the ride along with a surprisingly good physical workout. When riding a horse you will be doing much more than just sitting. You will be stimulating muscles in the dorsal and abdominal regions of your body which are seldom used in everyday activities. If you’ve been wanting to work on your “sixpack”, this would be a fun way to do it! Additionally, horseback riding is much less stressful on the knees and joints than other types of exercise like walking or even swimming. You will be exercising them, but without the jarring and stress experienced in many other physical workouts. Overall, most riders develop exceptional abs, leg and back muscles. Coupled with the physical benefits are the many mental and psychological benefits of horseback riding. Just being around horses has a positive psychological effect on us. Whether you’re grooming, feeding, or riding them, the mere presence of a horse has a calming effect. Being around horses is a natural stress reliever. There are also many psychological benefits to horseback riding. Learning to ride helps build self-confidence and helps to develop patience and focus. When you are learning to ride, you are also learning about your horse. You will need to be patient and focus

on developing that very special communication between you and your horse. Learning to cue your horse to do what you want will require patience and understanding. Your horse will also be learning to communicate and work with you. Mastering that unique language between you and your horse is a very satisfying and rewarding experience. If horseback riding sounds like an activity you’d like to try, there are many opportunities available. Many stables provide horses to ride for an hourly rate, or you might consider signing up for a riding class at a local riding school. If you’d like to start out slowly, you may want to try being around horses first. Volunteering at a local horse rescue or therapeutic riding organization would be a wonderful opportunity for some hands-on experience. The Local Equine Assistance Network (LEAN) is always in need of volunteers to help with the care and rehabilitation of abused and neglected horses. Visit their website at www.leanhorses.org. What a wonderful way to learn about these beautiful animals while providing a valuable service for them at the same time.
