If you have a pet, you are undoubtedly familiar with shedding and the seemingly constant clean up it requires. Yes, it seems like pet hair is everywhere!

Both dogs and cats shed all year round, but they tend to shed more during the spring and fall. As the seasons change, our daylight hours either increase or decrease. It is primarily the length of daylight that cues their bodies to shed, not just the outside temperature. orses and humans have always enjoyed a unique partnership. Horses have enabled us to travel faster, hunt more efficiently, and transport heavier loads. In return, we have sheltered them, kept them fed, and ensured their safety. Even today, in our current high-tech world, the horse/ human partnership continues to thrive. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Mounted Unit is just one example of how well our partnership with horses still works.

Unit also fulfills a very powerful role in the community. The presence of the horses themselves creates curiosity and will often draw people in to admire them more closely. Questions and conversations about the horses can strike up a dialogue with people who would otherwise not talk to the police. While it may have been an unforeseen benefit, the Mounted Unit has proven to be an effective catalyst for communication between police officers and the community.

Since its inception on July 31, 1998, the LVMPD Mounted Unit has provided the Las Vegas community with an innovative and advantageous service. In addition to routinely patrolling the downtown and the Strip, the Mounted Unit has been beneficial to many special projects in which a large, visible police presence is needed. Protests, rallies, and large concerts are all events where mounted officers have been very effective. Undoubtedly, one of the most rewarding successes the team has enjoyed is their ability to find lost or missing children. While patrolling the neighborhoods, children will often come running to see the horses. Since mounted officers have a significant height advantage, they are able to search the streets and neighborhoods from a higher vantage point than officers in patrol cars.

In 1998, the LVMPD Mounted Unit originally began with two officers, two horses and a Sergeant. Now, after much success, the unit is comprised of seven horses and four full-time riders.

While such duties have proven to be a benefit to the police force, the Mounted 8

PLUS three wranglers who are essential group members, responsible for the ongoing care of the horses.

As with any successful team, training of both officers and horses is extensive. Seasoned officers must complete a 40-hour basic riding class, followed by a three-month training period that focuses on equitation. Similarly, potential mounts receive vigorous and ongoing training. Horses must display the ability to perform under stressful situations, even when many of the requirements force them to go against their natural instincts. They are required to go towards loud noises and must be willing to approach people and push them with their bodies. Only about 40% of potential mounts successfully make it through the training. After training, each officer is assigned two horses and must know their individual strengths and weaknesses. It is up to the officer to determine which horse is best-suited for the task at hand. With community support from the Friends of Metro Mounted Unit (a non-profit organization dedicated to financial assistance for non-budgeted expenses), the team is able to provide more training and purchase necessary equipment. GRYFF

he Las Vegas Metro police searched for months for a new addition to their Mounted Unit. Finally, they found Gryff – a beautiful black Friesian breed. His stunning beauty combined with his charismatic personality stole the hearts of the Unit. “Horses in general just draw people in, but this horse, I’m telling you, there is something about this big guy,” said Metro’s Sgt. Bret Ficklin. Sadly, just eight days after Gryff was moved to Las Vegas, he became very ill. Colic, a painful intestinal blockage, had Gryff down in his stall. After being examined by veterinarian Dr. Leslie Schur, the Unit had two options – emergency surgery or euthanasia. The decision was made to try and save Gryff. During the surgery, Dr. Schur removed three rocks from Gryff’s

intestines. The surgery, in addition to treatment for ulcers and a hoof condition, brought Gryff’s vet bill to more than $17,000. Thankfully, a generous donation of $10,000 from the Brenden Mann Foundation paid a substantial portion of the bill. Gryff is back at the stables now, but still has a long road ahead of him. The Unit hopes to begin training Gryff in the next six months.

Make sure you are prepared and have water and food bowls, as well as treats, on hand. You should respect the boundaries of others (human or otherwise). Some people may have allergies; some people may not be fond of any animals. Keep your dog in your cubicle or office rather than allowing them to wander around and perhaps leave a gift in someone else’s area. If your place of work has an open policy, check to see who else is bringing a friend and plan ahead whether it will be a good fit for all. If you are not a member of the lucky ones, you might point out at work that surveys have found that allowing workers to bring their cat and/or dog to work helped relieve stress and improve morale. It may be a “raise” to which your employer just might agree!

Life with a dog or cat that has special needs is a demanding job, but it is one that more pet owners are choosing. Thanks to advances in veterinary medicine, better nutrition and educated owners, companion animals are living longer. It is not uncommon for large breed dogs to reach their teens or for cats to live 20 or more years. While this progress is granting us more time with our animals, it has also created more pets with special needs. Animals that would have once passed away due to a chronic illness or injury are able to enjoy life with assistance from their owners and the new therapies and products available to them.

MONEY It’s hard to talk finances, but life with a disabled pet is expensive. There could be equipment to buy like a dog wheelchair or the pet might need rehab therapy or future medical procedures. It is essential to be aware of these future costs.

In 2008 I faced this situation when my dog Sophie developed a neurological condition that left her paralyzed. Her overall health was good and she was not in pain so I chose to be her caretaker. Sophie continued to have a good quality life for the next five years when she passed away at the age of 15.

ESTABLISH A ROUTINE Life has to be organized with a disabled dog or cat so establishing a daily routine is important. It adds to a pet’s wellbeing and overall health. For instance, a paraplegic dog needs a scheduled bathroom regimen to prevent urinary tract infections and pets with other disabilities might need strict feeding or medication schedules.

Some people are like me and become caretakers after a pet they have raised since it was young gets sick and others choose to adopt an animal with health issues. Whichever group you are in the decision to give a disabled pet the life they deserve is a big commitment. It must be weighed carefully and with sensitivity for the needs of the animal and yourself.

Here are 5 facts pet owners should know about life with a specially-abled pet. QUALITY OF LIFE The most important point to consider is the quality of life your pet will have with their disability. Consider the modifications you need to make to maintain that quality. TIME Disabled dogs and cats take up more time than able-bodied pets. They may need assistance in how they move or with food preparation, at-home medical procedures or extra veterinary appointments. Having enough time to properly care for them is important. 14

BE CREATIVE / HAVE FUN Life with a disabled dog or cat is not all work. Pets and owners need to take time for fun so it’s important to play games that keep them alert and active, even if it means modifying the activity for their needs. Disabled pets can become depressed if owners do not find creative ways to play. Las Vegas is a great city for pets with disabilities because of our resources. The Las Vegas Veterinary Specialty Center helps pets with neurological and spinal conditions and assists pets with heart disease, cancer, eye problems and physical therapy. Becoming the caretaker of a special needs pet is a personal choice, but it can be a rewarding decision. Flooring can be a challenge with different disabilities or age. When my Maddy went blind, to help her find the back door, I put area rugs inside and outside the door. I found the rugs needed to be the same, but also a completely different texture from any others in the house, otherwise she got confused. Older dogs have trouble getting up, so they need a tactile surface for traction. If you have tile or wood, use area rugs in their favorite places. Just make sure to use the proper pad or slip resistance tape underneath so they stay in place.

As our pets age they can develop disabilities just as we do. Whether they lose their sight, hearing or mobility, we need to re-think our home interior. Depending upon their specials needs these seven suggestions may be helpful for you and your pet.

Raised water and food bowls make it easier for older and disabled dogs to eat and drink. Lower bowls can be challenging and even painful. Pets with neurological conditions may lose their balance and knock over their bowls. Make sure their bowls sit high enough so they don’t have to bend over to reach it. If your pet is wobbly, consider weighted bowls which will make it more difficult to knock it over.

If you have a disabled cat they may have a hard time getting in and out of a standard high-side litter box. Instead, recycle an old plastic pet carrier. With the low-cut front lip they may find it easier to get in and out as well as steady themselves against the walls if they need to.

A hard surface is best for those who have lost mobility and are using assistance from a wheelchair or partial wheel support. Deep pile carpets may make it tougher to get around, so use area rugs in their traffic pattern areas and make sure the edges are secure so they don’t get caught.

They may still want to jump on and off things, so consider purchasing a set of stairs to provide them with easier access to their favorite places. If your pet is in a wheelchair and your home has stairs leading up to the front or out the back door consider a ramp. If they are having trouble getting in the doggie door because of the height, add a doggie deck like Dave from Las Vegas Handyman did for his client.

We all have to make adjustments when our pet’s lives change. But it’s surprising how quickly they adjust. Disabled pets can live healthy, long lives, we just need to help them along the way.

Your pet might have a few more accidents, so consider fabrics that have stain resistant qualities or add a stainguard fabric treatment. Microfiber and microsuede are my personal favorites. They’re easy to maintain with soap and water. Crypton, a super stain, water and bacteria-resistant fabric is amazing for all pet applications as liquids literally run right off the fabric.

As we age, getting in and out of our own bed can pose problems. Heck, some days it takes me a bit to get up and get going. So for your little one, look for a bed shaped more like a sofa, with a high back and sides and a low front. This shape will make it easier to get in and out as well as cushion any slips should they become unstable.

It’s important to light the way if your pet has lost their sight as they will need help with depth perception. With Maddy, I added contrast with lighting and pattern. In my bedroom, I placed rope lighting underneath the bed. It gave a soft glow and didn’t bother us at all. In our family room I used a patterned area rug under the sofa.

CATNIP… feline bliss for your cat! Does your cat like catnip? Ever wonder why all cats don’t respond to its charms? It seems that only 50% of cats have an inherited sensitivity to catnip? If your cat is one of the lucky ones then one or two sniffs and they’ll be in feline euphoric bliss. The behaviors do vary; while some cats become extremely playful others enter a serene sedated state. The effects are short lived and last for about 10 minutes. Interestingly they require about two hours before they “reset” and are able to respond to catnip again. Catnip is useful for positive training such as encouraging appropriate scratching by rubbing it on scratching posts or sprinkling it on scratchers. It can also create renewed interest in playing by rubbing their toys with it.

WHAT IS HEARTWORM DISEASE?

Heartworm disease is caused by the blood-borne parasite, Dirofilaria immitis. This is a serious and potentially fatal disease that affects the heart, lungs and blood vessels of dogs and cats. The disease is transmitted by mosquitos which are part of the heartworm’s fairly extensive life cycle. We see the most incidences of heartworm infections in the south and southeast regions of the United States due to the high mosquito population. However, heartworm incidences have been increasingly reported throughout the United States and even several reports have been confirmed in Las Vegas.

Clinical Signs:

In initial stages of this disease some dogs show few to no signs at all. If signs are present, most common signs include dry cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, exercise intolerance and decreased appetite. In more advanced stages some signs include collapse, fluid in the abdomen due to heart failure or sudden death. Clinical signs in cats can vary from asymptomatic to very traumatic. Subtle signs include cough, vomiting, decreased appetite and weight loss. However, in cats some of the first signs can include collapse or sudden death.

Prevention and Treatment:

Like most diseases, prevention is the key! There are many different types of heartworm preventatives on the market and even some preventatives have additional medication that also protect against fleas and intestinal parasites. Due to the wide variety of products, it is recommended that you speak with your veterinarian to see which is the best type of medication for your pet. Unfortunately unlike prevention there is only one FDA approved treatment for heartworms in dogs and there is no approved treatment for cats. Intestinal Parasites:

Intestinal parasites are parasites that mainly live and infect the gastro-intestinal tract. Most common parasites include 24

roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms, whipworms, coccida and giardia. These parasites can be spread from animal to animal and some of these parasites have the potential to spread to humans. Infections can be acquired from numerous locations but especially places such as dog parks, pet “walk areas” or condominium/ apartment complexes. Dogs and cats can be affected at any age, however we most commonly see infections in puppies and kittens. The problems most commonly noted with small animals are a pot belly appearance, anemia (blood loss), vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, and scooting. It is important to test your pets every year against intestinal parasites for their protection and your own. The main way to diagnose these parasites is conducting a fecal test and most of these parasites are easily treatable when placed on proper deworming medication. You can reduce the risk of your pet acquiring parasites by practicing proper hygiene, staying away from “high traffic” pet areas, cleaning up your pet’s feces and visiting your veterinarian annually for fecal tests and physical examinations.

Dogs and cats are susceptible to a variety of different parasites including heartworm, hookworm, fleas, ticks and many more. All of these parasites feed off your pet’s body and cause major health problems if untreated. Fleas and other parasites can actually transmit diseases to you and your family as well. Parasites are preventable in most cases, so talk to your vet about the different ways you can keep your pet parasite free. Make sure to bring your pet in for regular check ups, parasites can often go undetected by pet owners.

Doggie Daycare Can Be a Wonderful Experience: But is it For Every Dog?

t’s one of the hottest topics for dog owners – daycare. Since everyone is talking about it, it must be something you have to do right? Wrong. Not all dogs need daycare. All dogs do, however, need, exercise, some level of socialization and, of course, bathroom breaks! Even if your dog has easy access to get outside on its own while you’re at work, dogs are pack animals and need interaction. Whether it’s great in groups or prefers alone time with one human, there are many solutions to get your dog the kind of care that best fits its (and your) needs. Here are some questions to ask and qualifications to seek in finding the best fit:

PICK THE RIGHT TYPE OF SERVICE - There are myriad formats for dog care. This ranges from individual dog walkers and pet sitters to a range of group settings – small scale (<10 dogs); mid-range (10-50) and large scale (50-150+). Some separate by size or breed. Others have breed restrictions. There also are “open play” spaces where dogs are intermingled with no separation. IS THE INDIVIDUAL LICENSED - In most cities, anyone running a dog care operation – even home-based – must hold a permit with Animal Control. A business license is not enough. This extends to dog walkers who handle more than three dogs at one time. PACK SIZE AND MANAGING IT – Some states mandate how many dogs there may be for any one “handler”. This is required whether a sole practitioner doing walks or a structured facility. Usually the dog to handler ratio is 15:1. Nevada has no mandated law. Note: many facilities promoting 15:1 actually are 25:1 or more so ask to see the groups in which the dogs will be playing. KNOW HOW THE PERSON OR STAFF IS TRAINED – If taking your dog to a facility or you find 28

a walker who takes dogs to off-leash play areas, make sure they’re qualified to manage that type of play. Managing off leash play is hard, especially when there is no size or breed separation or cages/crates/kennels. For walkers, make sure they have the skill to handle dogs in the specific environment where they will be walking your dog (e.g. someone who’s walked dogs at a shelter won’t have the experience to walk a dog on city streets). Ask about their training and look for those who have a working understanding of dog behavior.

KNOW YOUR DOG - Not every dog is designed for daycare. Dogs are pack animals but do not naturally play “in groups”. Most dog play is one on one or just a couple of dogs together (thus another reason large group play can result in fights and injuries and why handler training is so important). Some dogs prefer the company of humans. These dogs often do best with one-on-one care of a walker or pet sitter. Some prefer the company of just a few dogs, and so a small home-based solution is a fit. Some prefer no company at all, so get a dog door if you can and if that’s not an option someone to take them out for a short walk or two during the say should be sufficient.

here are a few important facts and some information that you need to be aware of before you do. I have been a bird owner for a little over 2 years. I adopted Sasha from the Nevada SPCA, so not an expert, but I can tell you about my firsthand experience. Some of you may know Sasha, she is our store bird and is a 19 year old African Grey Timneh Parrot. I have always loved birds and was particularly drawn to the African Greys maybe because my love for the Old English Sheepdogs. Both grey, just birds of different feathers! That is what intrigued me and piqued my curiosity so I went to visit Sasha at the shelter. I almost walked away deciding not to adopt her because I felt she was such a sad soul. Her feathers were dull and she had an overall sad aura and I was afraid I would not be able to provide the best home for her. I was also worried about my lack of knowledge regarding birds but a spark happened in my heart when I looked into her eyes. So the decision was made and Sasha was coming home with me! I cannot begin to tell you how happy Sasha has made me and as soon as she arrived in the store, her life turned around. It was as though someone turned on a light switch. I believe she was just not stimulated, kept in close quarters and bored. She is very happy now and receives excellent care from the staff and she gets an abundance of attention. This keeps her engaged and entertained. Sometimes I think she should be on the LV Strip because her favorite thing to do is people watch out the front window! Yes, Sasha does have a fan club also; they visit her daily and they spoil her with special treats. Birds need stimulation so please invest in toys. Safety is always first, so make sure the toys you choose are proportioned to the size of your bird as well as non-toxic. Birds love a variety of colors, textures and shapes. Another good idea is to rotate and change out their toys every other week. This way your bird will be happy and engaged. If you don’t think your bird is interested in toys, you have not found the right one! Try different textures such as cloths, ropes, leather strips, wood, cardboard, metal and plastic. A bird that destroys his/her toys is a happy bird. They will not last long, so have some fun and look into creating your own. Oh and Sasha continues to entertain us all and is a vision of health and beauty today! Also one last thought, birds have very long life spans so remember this is a huge commitment.

There’s a reason that dogs and people get along famously. Of course, dogs appreciate the magical way in which their food bowls are replenished each day, and the fact that their owners understand the importance of doggy belly rubs, but there is nothing more cherished to them than the sound of a human voice. Well, that and perhaps a delectable rawhide bone once in a while. Have you ever noticed that when you speak, your dog tilts their head just enough to fully hear you? To them, unless there’s a command given or a keyword involving treats, it’s not particularly important what you say, but more importantly that you’re saying something. Your voice is essentially music to their ears... even if you sing a little off tune or can’t hold a note. Dogs are soothed by the sounds of human voices and reading to them is one fantastic method of doing just that. These extraordinary moments are very beneficial, especially for nervous dogs who require a calming force every now and then. In addition, it can help socialize dogs with people when others take turns reading a chapter or two. Don’t fret, as it doesn’t matter what the genre or subject matter is; just that someone is reading it to them. It’s the perfect chance to not only bond with your dog but also to finish that captivating book that has been sitting on your nightstand! Dogs aren’t the only ones who benefit from this quality time, but children benefit from reading to your furbabies as well! When children are first learning to read or are shy about their reading abilities – inclusive of stuttering, confusing words, going too slow or too fast—they might not be so apt to read aloud. They may fear being pressured or judged. Giving a child the opportunity to read to a dog, enables them to feel

confident in reading at a rate for which they are most comfortable, and there is no pressure whatsoever to pronounce each word accurately. If they stutter or stumble on a sentence, they can correct themselves and continue without anyone interfering. There is no one rushing them along. It’s a wonderful technique to help a child develop enhanced reading skills and increase their self-confidence while also easing any anxiety your pooch may possess. Keeping in mind that no child should be left unattended with a dog, this activity may also aid a child who had previously been uncomfortable in the presence of canines. One doesn’t need to read for an extended duration, and it is a relaxing way to spend a few precious moments of free time. There is no need to limit reading to only your dog. as your other pets will appreciate the time spent with them as well. Cats will stay for as long as they want (and also let you know when reading time is over), and even your bird might learn a word or two! The advantages are plentiful for you, your child and any pet. The next time you find yourself snuggled comfortably on the couch indulged in a good book (or even a not so good book) why not invite your furry sidekick to join you and share a few chapters with them? They’ll appreciate it and will welcome this precious occasion with open paws!

Kitten season is really three seasons in one. It starts in spring, peaks in late spring or early summer and ends in the fall. This is when cats give birth and animal shelters and animal rescues have an overabundance of kittens available for adoption. Unaltered cats are driven by their hormones and tend to sneak outdoors primarily in search of a mate. Consequently, too many kittens are born. Remember: A cat can become pregnant at 5 months. At 5 months a male can get a female cat pregnant. Another outcome is that the chances that adult cats will find a home decrease because potential adopters tend to prefer kittens over adult cats.

Recently important changes were enacted that affect how the Animal Foundation handles cats that find their way into the shelter. A few highlights:

If your cat does not have a tipped ear or a microchip or identification tag it is exempt from the 72-hour mandatory hold period. If healthy, it will either proceed through the regular adoption process or be returned to the location where it was trapped after it has been sterilized, vaccinated for rabies, and ear tipped. Microchipped cats or those with an identification tag will continue to be held for 72 hours so that owners have time to reclaim them. After the hold period they will proceed through the regular adoption process. Please make sure your cat is microchipped and that all information is current and updated. If you cat does go missing contact your microchip company immediately. It is also recommended that your cat have a collar with an ID tag.
