he sign at the front of the building reads “Welcome to Paradise”. You look around to make sure you are still in Las Vegas. You walk through the open doors and are instantly surrounded by lush foliage. The feeling that you have walked into tropical bliss is intensified when you look to the right, see a Scarlet Macaw named Rio, and hear the raucous sounds of parrots. There is shading from the sun, beautiful plants and flowers, and stunning colorful birds; it must be paradise. Where in Las Vegas are you? You, my friend, are at 5311 W. Charleston Boulevard and have entered Plant World Nursery.

Make sure that you include on your travels through this wonderful place a visit to Delila, a 14 year old White Cockatoo, and Cool Whip, a 25 years old Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo. Delila loves to talk and Cool Whip loves to show off. They are considered the stars of Plant World Nursery and are just delightful.

Sweet Pea Plant World Nursery not only contains over ten acres of plants, trees and flowers, but it also serves as an animal sanctuary. Scattered among the meandering paths are over 50 exotic birds, 3 African tortoises, more than 20 Red-tipped water turtles, a school of koi fish, and 5 friendly cats! Secondhand smoke is harmful to our

is the leading cause of preventable disease and death and kills more people each year in the U.S. than alcohol, AIDS, motor vehicle crashes, illegal drugs, murders, and suicides combined – approximately 438,000 deaths every year, according to Campaign for TobaccoFree Kids.

Dr. John Reif, professor at the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, says that dogs with short noses have double the risk of lung cancer and long-nosed dogs such as collies have two and half times greater risk of nasal cancer from secondhand smoke.

There is no safe form of tobacco use.

Pet birds also are victims of secondhand smoke. A bird’s respiratory system is hypersensitive to any type of pollutant in the air, says Dr. Carolynn MacAllister, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension Service veterinarian. MacAllister said that the most serious consequences of secondhand smoke exposure in birds are pneumonia or lung cancer. Other health risks include eye, skin, heart, and fertility problems.

Secondhand smoke is also deadly, killing some 53,000 non-smokers each year according to the Centers for Disease Control. That’s our family, friends and community. There is no safe level of second-hand smoke. Now studies show that secondhand smoke kills our pets, too. “Research has shown that animals who live with smokers have an increased chance of developing diseases including lymphoma in cats and nasal and lung cancer in dogs,” said Meghan Scheibe from The Animal Foundation in Las Vegas. “We encourage smokers to be responsible pet owners and consider the health of their furry friends before lighting a cigarette,” said Ms. Scheibe. “Animals are particularly susceptible to the dangers of passive smoking due to the fact that they constantly lick their fur, which holds the residue of nicotine and tar,” said a spokesperson for a veterinary surgery quoted in Pet Business World. “This is especially true of cats, who are more likely to groom themselves. As a result, cats in a smoking household are 2.5 times more likely to develop cancer, specifically lymphoma, than a cat who is not exposed to smoke.”

Tobacco Free Utah said that animals are also at risk when they ingest cigarette butts that contain toxins. Digestion of as few as 1 to 5 butts can result in salivation, diarrhea, vomiting, cardiac abnormalities and even death. Malcolm Ahlo of the Southern Nevada Health District’s Tobacco Control Program says, “We need to start treating our pets as part of our family by not smoking cigarettes including e-cigarettes around them.” The good news is when smokers become aware that secondhand smoke harms their pets they want to quit. Get help at the Nevada Tobacco Users Helpline at 1-800-QUITNOW (1-800-784-8669) or the American Lung Association in Nevada at 702-431-6348.

Las Vegas, NV. – Rex, a six year old Belgian Malinois, and his handler, Lianne Shinton, have tied a World Record with their recent ‘Incredible Fetch It’ jump of 23 feet at the 2014 Purina Incredible Dog Regional Championship held in Huntington Beach, California on May 31. Rex also finished off the competition by winning the Western Regional Championship. In ‘Incredible Fetch It’ dogs take a running leap off a 40-foot dock into a 27,000-gallon pool of water to retrieve a bumper which is suspended 4 feet above the water at a minimum distance of 16 feet from the edge of the dock. The dog must fetch or dislodge the bumper within two tries in order to move on to the next distance. The bumper is moved out at 1 foot increments. The dog that knocks the bumper off at the furthest distance wins. Five dogs competed in the ‘Incredible Fetch It’ competition. Rex won the competition with a grab of 21 feet, earning him the title Purina Incredible Dog Western Regional Champion. Shinton and Rex were allowed their victory jump and they achieved a grab of 22 feet. Encouraged by the crowd to continue on, Rex attempted 23 feet with a successful grab, earning him the World Record. Rex did make an attempt at 24 feet and knocked the bumper but not dislodge it. “The sport is a blast for the dogs and very entertaining for the crowd,” said Shinton, co-owner of IQ K9 Training and member of Las Vegas DockDogs. “Rex grabbed the bumper at 23 feet in the finals, he really surprised me. The other competitors were tremendous and they gave Rex a workout.” Rex also qualified for the National Championships in St. Louis in September. We are hoping he will do well there and possibly have another attempt at 24 feet.

Zoonotic Diseases Diseases that can affect you and your pet By Dr. Matthew Brooks, MS, DVM

A zoonotic disease is a disease that can be passed from animals to humans. Actually, there are many of these diseases. The following article will discuss some of the more prevalent diseases that I see in our practice and some of the methods to protect your family. The website www.cdc.gov is a great resource for finding the most up-to-date information regarding the risks and prevalence of these diseases.

GIARDIASIS

One of the most diagnosed parasites in our practice. Recent analysis of our fecal samples show that 5% of our fecal sample are positive for this parasite. Caused by the parasite Giardia, giardiasis is the most frequent cause of nonbacterial diarrhea in North America and the most commonly diagnosed intestinal parasite in humans. It is transmitted most frequently through contaminated water. The most common sign of giardiasis in dogs is diarrhea, which can be acute, chronic, or intermittent. There are different species of giardia and some are unlikely infectious to humans. Nevertheless, proper hygiene and routine fecal examinations will provide adequate control for this parasite.

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Organisms Transmission of antibiotic resistant infections between pets and humans are uncertain. It is certainly plausible and it is important to take proper precautions. Our practice does diagnose certain methacillin resistant staph species (not necessarily staph aureus). Transmission can occur with general contact, scratches or bites. Humans and pets have staph type organisms on their body at all times but the drug resistant versions can be transmitted typically through a cut or scrape and appears in the form of a skin or soft tissue infection. The large amount of medical and veterinary use of antibiotics is the driving force behind the resistant bacteria. Please 14

follow all labeled instructions by your veterinarian to help slow the progression of resistant organisms.

Toxocariasis (Roundworm) Adult roundworms are an intestinal parasite that resemble strands of spaghetti when they are passed into the feces. Although an infected animal will shed the non-visible eggs in the feces which are infectious to humans. This is why picking up pet waste promptly is vital. Roundworms can cause vomiting or diarrhea. Children are more prone to contract roundworm as they are more likely to touch infected dirt or sand and then put their hands into their mouths. Children should wash hands thoroughly after playing in areas where pet waste may have been deposited. In rare cases, roundworm infection can cause an eye disease that can lead to blindness; such infections can be more serious in children than adults. Gardeners should wear gloves and wash hands after working outside.

Ringworm Ringworm is not a worm, but a skin and scalp disease caused by fungus. Ringworm usually makes a bald patch of scaly skin or a ring-shaped rash that is reddish and may be itchy. The rash can be dry and scaly or wet and crusty. Ringworm is transmitted by direct contact with an infected animal’s skin or hair. Dogs, especially puppies, can pass ringworm to people, so preventative care by your veterinarian is important. If you see any of these lesions please contact your physician.

Cat Scratch Disease

Cat scratch disease (CSD) is a bacterial disease caused by Bartonella henselae. Approximately 90% of CSD patients have a history of cat contact. Symptoms include: swollen lymph nodes, especially those around the head, neck, and upper limbs; fever; headache; fatigue; and a poor appetite. Kittens are more likely to be infected and to pass the bacterium to people. About 40% of cats carry the bacteria at some point in their lives although they do not show any signs of the illness, so you cannot tell which cats may spread the disease. To prevent CSD, avoid “rough play” with cats, especially kittens; this includes any activity that may lead to cat scratches and bites. Wash cat bites and scratches immediately and thoroughly with soap and water. Do not allow cats to lick open wounds. Contact your physician right away if you develop pronounced swelling and an infection with pus where you were scratched or bitten by a cat.

Toxoplasmosis Approximately 30 to 40% of the world’s adults have been infected with the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Cats can shed the parasite in their feces; however, the cysts do not become infectious for 1 - 5 days after being passed, which is why daily cat box cleaning is recommended. Common everyday contact with a cat is not a risk factor.

Eating raw or undercooked meat containing the parasite is the most common way humans contract toxoplasmosis. Most people who get toxoplasmosis do not get sick, but some people will get swollen glands, muscle aches, and feel as though they have the “flu.” This zoonosis can be of concern to pregnant women as it can cause birth defects or miscarriage. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, have another person clean out the litter box every day and try to keep your cats indoors so they cannot eat infected rodents. Wash your hands thoroughly after contact with cat waste and after gardening, as the parasite can be deposited in the soil. Avoid undercooked meat, as it can harbor the parasite, and do not feed undercooked meat to your cat.

Prevention of Zoonotic Disease One of the best ways to prevent zoonotic diseases is to promptly clean up pet waste. Wash your hands thoroughly with hot, soapy water after playing with your dog or handling its waste.

If you have any questions about these diseases or concerns about your pet’s health, please consult your veterinarian. If you have concerns about your health, please seek medical attention from your health care provider. Take your dog to your veterinarian for regular check-ups (at least once per year), and if your dog exhibits any of the symptoms of these diseases. In the vast majority of cases, these diseases are treatable. While the risk of contracting any of these illnesses is low, the website www.cdc.gov is a great resource for finding the most up-to-date information regarding the risks and prevalence of these diseases. Note that many of these infections are the result of eating undercooked meat, fish and poultry, or involve exotic animals and travel. CLICKER TRAINING Makes learning FUN for the animal and the trainer too! – By Veronica Selco –

CLICKER TRAINING uses positive reinforcement paired with a “click” to teach your dog a new behavior. The “click” is a distinct marker that is nonverbal, consistent and clear. By eliminating the need for your dog to have to interpret verbal information which can also communicate your frustration, disapproval or stress, your dog can quickly earn a reward when she offers the behavior you want. You can use clicker training for teaching your dog tricks, life skills, service dog tasks or whatever behavior you want by precisely marking the desired behavior with a “click” then quickly offering a valuable reward. A reward can be a game of tug, playing with a ball or preferably a quick food reward. When you clicker train your dog you are setting the stage for a lifelong relationship of trust, fun learning and clear communication of the behavior you want from your dog. Your dog will learn that when she’s right she get’s a “click” and no click means she has another opportunity to try again.

How To Get Started There are a few skills you can practice on your own before you start to train your dog. You can purchase a clicker at your local pet store. A clicker is a small plastic box with a metal insert that makes a “click” sound when you press it.

There is no need for force or punishment and there is no need to tell your dog that she is wrong. Using punishment will interfere and slow down your dog’s learning, discourage her from trying again and provide inconsistent results.

Set up a cup on counter or chair a few feet away from you.

Have treats cut up in small pea sized pieces. Decide whether you will hold treats in your hand or have them in a pouch around your waist. Treats should be on side or back or in a position where it does not distract dog.

Stand or sit in neutral position, now find a comfortable way to hold clicker in your hand and find comfortable position for that hand/arm.

Practice “clicking” and delivering treat to cup until you find a “rhythm” that feels right. Treat hand should remain still until after the click.

Now again, in neutral and stable position practice this: Click, Pause, Extend treat hand and Deliver Treat to cup.

Now bring out your dog! Remember to click your dog while behavior is occurring not after.

– or CAN Your Cat Be Trained? We love our cats. We love their characteristics; they’re aloof and independent. They do not seem to have a strong desire to please us. We often joke about our cats – when we want to play with them they ignore us; when we’re too busy to play with them they pester us.

Cats like words of praise from us. In a soft gentle, affectionate, resonant, almost humming voice say “What a good kitty you are!” Some cats also respond to cat treats as rewards. Cats need play and stimulation. Kittens need play sessions several times a day; an adult cat needs to play about once a day because by nature they are hunters. Their predatory urges must be satisfied.

John Bradshaw in his book, Cat Sense, describes the dual nature of cats very well: Cats somehow manage to be simultaneously affectionate and self reliant. Compared to dogs, cats are lowmaintenance pets. They do not need training. They groom themselves. They can be left alone all day without pining for their owners as many dogs do… in a word, they are convenient. Perhaps though they are too convenient? Maybe their needs are not being met. Bradshaw also states that cats could live much happier lives if their owners understood more about what makes their cat tick. Could it be that our cats want us to train them? Gregory Popovich in his book, You CAN Train Your Cat, shares his secrets and practical ideas with us. The number one rule is to understand is that you can only train a cat to do a trick if it involves a behavior it naturally exhibits. Is your cat a climber, or a retriever, or a jumper, or a between-the- legs walker? Observe your cat; get to really know your cat. Design games that are based around their habits so it fun and rewarding for both of you.

Also it is important to use positive reinforcement – no punishment! Punishment creates stress and that is the most common causes for problem behavior in cats. Stress also compromises the immune system, making your cat more vulnerable to disease. It’s much easier to train your cat when you reward behaviors you want and offer him more attractive alternatives for behaviors you don’t want. Clicker Training also works for cats – see article on page 18.

For many of us it is a major change in our thoughts about cats to realize that they CAN be trained. Perhaps your cat wants to be trained; perhaps your cat is looking for opportunities to show off for you.

A few important tips: Always put the harness on away from the door and carry your cat outside. Otherwise they might try to dash out between walks without the harness on. Things You Need To Consider In Your Décor By Gail Mayhugh

For those of us who have birds or if you are considering adding one to your family, there are special things you need to consider in your décor – what kind of cage, ﬂooring, wall ﬁnish and placement of the cage in your home.

How about a different style or shape? There are plenty of options out there that are made for corners, look like houses, round and even themed to your décor. I just love the pagoda and arched cages from www.drsfostersmith.com.

In selecting your cage, the first and most important consideration is the proper size you’ll need for your feathered friend. Birds require spacious cages for both their physical and psychological health. There needs to be enough room for small, flighted birds to fly around and room for larger birds to flap their wings and like my Cockatoo, perform gymnastics and stunts. You also have to consider the length of their tails. They should never be touching the bottom of the cage. When looking for a cage purchase the largest cage you can afford and your home can accommodate so they have plenty of room to move around and play. Think if you had to live in one room for the rest of your life. How large would you want it? I know that the size of your home and where you are going to place the cage are factors, but please consider your bird’s comfort and well being first. Safety is another important consideration. Look at the bar spacing to make sure there enough room for bowls, perches and toys. Before purchasing your cage, you’ll also need to do a little research about the personality and habits of the type of bird you’re bringing home. Having a Love Bird is much different than a Blue & Gold McCaw. Why does their personality matter? If your bird is mechanically inclined or an escape-artist, like a Cockatoo, you’ll need more security features. For birds that love to climb, you’ll need a cage with lots of horizontal bars. With size and safety covered, let’s look at the décor decisions you’ll need to make. Cages come in a variety of metal finishes that will work with your décor. Some manufacturers will even custom color your cage so there is no need to paint a cage yourself to match your décor. It’s impossible to guarantee that any paint you purchase is absolutely safe around birds. Want your cage to be part of your furniture? Birds can be messy so you need to make a few other decorating decisions beyond the style of your cage, such as, flooring, wall finish and placement. It really goes without saying that hard surface floors are best, but if that’s not an option and Petey’s cage will be on carpet, consider buying a large plastic chair mat for under his cage. It makes it easier to roll the cage around so you can properly clean underneath and around it. Another option is a clear vinyl shower curtain. They’re inexpensive and can be thrown in your washing machine. You could build a wood platform tray to place the cage on. If you’re placing the cage against a wall the finish is very important. You’ll want a good scrubbable paint for those birds that are tossers. I don’t care for semi-gloss paint anywhere else in the house, but your bird wall is the place for it. KiKi, my Blue & Gold, somehow seems to get her bananas all over the wall. So along with semi-gloss paint, I’ve also tacked up a sheet of clear vinyl. You can’t see it and I’m able to brush off her mess, wipe it down and replace it every couple months. Lastly, where are you going to place their cage? Of course, watch for drafts, but more importantly, are they chewers? My Cockatoo loves to make chew toys out of anything within her reach. One day she grabbed the cord on my blind and pulled part of the blind into her cage. I’m sure she worked all day stretching her foot out as far as she could to grab the cord. I was not a happy Momma when I got home. But then again she is a Cockatoo and they are mischievous little ones. So consider anything within their reach as chew toys, whether they are in or out of their cage. Birds can be wonderful family members, many of which will grow old with you. So take a little extra time in making the right decorating choices for you and them to live happily ever after.

On a hot summer day, what could be more relaxing than sitting in a cool room, gazing into a sparkling fish-filled aquarium? Having an aquarium is a great way to enjoy nature in the comfort of your own home when it’s too hot to enjoy it outside. Watching your fish interact and observing what life is like under the sea is both relaxing and educational. If you have ever considered setting up an aquarium, you may have been overwhelmed with all of the different types of aquariums there are. For fresh water fish, there are cold water tanks and warm water tanks. Another option is a salt water tank, which is a little more expensive to set up. Salt water fish generally cost a little more to purchase, but tend to be more colorful and larger than most fresh water fish. It really comes down to your own personal preference, given your budget and what you find desirable in an aquarium. For this article let’s look at two types of fresh water aquariums: the cold water aquarium, and the warm water “tropical” aquarium. When considering a cold water aquarium, one of the first fish that comes to mind is the Goldfish.

Although they are the most commonly recognized species of coldwater fish, there are also several species of Barbs, Tetras and Danios that can tolerate aquarium temperatures in the low 60’s. Guppies, Loaches, and White Clouds can also be considered for a cold water tank. Although some of the cold water fish may not be as brightly colored as tropical fish, it does eliminate the need for a heater. It is important to remember that cold water fish require more space than tropical fish and can get quite large. A Goldfish, for example, can actually reach 12 inches in length if properly cared for. While you may not have as many fish in a cold water tank, you will ultimately have large ones. To be fair to them, you may need to move them to a larger tank in the future. If you want a broader spectrum of fish to choose from and don’t mind the expense of an aquarium heater (about $25 - $40), then you might consider a tropical aquarium. In a warm water tank, you will be able to keep more fish per gallon than a cold water aquarium and will have many more species of fish to choose from. While some of the most popular fish found in tropical tanks include Angelfish, Gouramies, Tetras and Hatchetfish, you will have over a hundred different species to consider! You are sure to find a selection of fish that are intriguing to watch and pleasing to the eye. When deciding on which species to buy, make sure that they will be compatible with each other. It is also a good idea to choose fish that will occupy different levels in your aquarium. Some fish species will naturally gravitate to the surface area, while

other species will prefer the middle section. Having a few bottom feeders, like a Corydoras catfish, is always an interesting entertainment feature and can be very helpful in tidying up the leftovers that sink to the bottom. Both types of fresh water aquariums require basically the same equipment (except for the heater) and they each have their pros and cons. If you are considering setting up your own aquarium, take time to do some research. Visit a local aquarium dealer or talk with an experienced aquarium hobbyist and ask questions. Look at the variety of fish available for each type of tank and decide which one you find preferable.

Trouble 2002 - 2014 Wonderful companion protector. He was inseparable from pug pal Frisky for ten years and then Mischief befriended him. Even after diabetes and complete blindness, his disposition was still sunny and playful, adapting to any curve life threw. I learned so much from this smart, loving, adorable friend. A tumor took him. Hope his silly pictures made people smile over the years… we will miss him ALWAYS. Thanks Dr. Brooks/staff at TCAH for compassionate care. 

I was not prepared to say goodbye. Boss was an extraordinary animal who touched so many lives, not only mine. Boss was my diabetic medical alert dog (which he took very seriously) and he was always bringing smiles to children and comforting people in the hospital.
