Happy 1st Year Annivesary! Looking back a year ago to our “premiere issue” we said that we were excited to offer pet owners an interesting and educational resource; a high-quality publication that will be a valuable asset to pet owners and lovers. Completing one year of business is definitely a milestone in any business endeavor. It is an excellent time to reflect on our mission and vision and review our goals and plans. It is also a time to celebrate “our” accomplishments. The accomplishments truly belong to all of us. Each issue represents the combined efforts of so many people. It is becoming more than a publication or resource - it is becoming a platform for our shared passion – pets. It is in partnership with our readers, advertisers, rescue & adoption groups, volunteers, pet owners and fosters, and pet lovers that we are able to publish Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine. Our last comment in the Welcome letter in our 1st issue was: We hope you enjoy our magazine as much as we have enjoyed creating it. We look forward to accomplishing our goals and to the experiences we will enjoy along the way. One year later we still enjoy creating it and we are still enjoying the experiences. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

To the Pet Community of Las Vegas….

CAT TIPS

B

ringing a new pet into your family is not always as easy as it sounds. Cats are no exception. While your cat may experience anxiety about its new surroundings and the new people in its life, you and your family will be learning your cat’s personality, its habits, and its behaviors. This always takes a little time, along with patience and understanding on the part of the family.

Here are a few tips which may help make all of your lives more manageable and fulfilling with your new feline family-member: THE LITTER BOX:

If your cat is “missing” the litter box, there are several easy solutions that may help. All cat litter is not the same. If you have recently changed the brand or type of cat litter you’ve been using, your kitty may not approve. Try to avoid using litter that is overly dusty or fragrant. Changing the litter more frequently may also help. If you have multiple cats, you need to have multiple litter boxes. The rule is one cat per litter box plus an overflow litter box. Location of the litter box may also be an issue. Try different locations, keeping in mind that most cats prefer a somewhat quiet, private area like a bathroom or a laundry room. You may have to try several different locations. A trip to the veterinarian may be necessary as well, to determine if there is a medical issue. If your cat is not spayed or neutered, now is the time to get that done.

SCRATCHING/SHARPENING CLAWS: Cats that are sharpening their claws in undesirable places (like your furniture), may need their cat trees and scratch pads relocated. Cats like to be high up, with the ability to stretch both horizontally and vertically. They like to be in view of what is happening at all times, so their cat trees and perches should be where your family spends time together. Cats may be independent but they do love being part of the family. If your cat continues to scratch in undesirable places try using a squirt bottle or double-sided tape to deter that behavior. Nail caps can also be used to help protect belongings and still allow your cat to do what comes natural. See www.softclaws.com for more information. NEW BABY: The addition of a new baby into your family will be an adjustment for everyone, your cat included. After given some time to adjust, this can be a beneficial time for your child and cat to learn the importance of gentleness and trust together. Additionally, exposure to cats at a young age can help a child develop resistance to allergens and asthma. MOVING: It is important that you plan ahead when looking for a new place. You need to ask the right questions to determine if all members of your family will be welcome in the new home – including your cat. When looking for a new home, ask if pets are allowed before signing a lease. Most places allow pets but may require a security deposit. Once you have gotten through some of the rough spots, you will be rewarded with years of love and companionship. When given the chance, your cat can become a wonderful family member.

I

f you have ever watched the film “Marley and Me,” then you know the dangers of Bloat (GDV).

Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV), commonly called bloat, is an emergency medical condition that is seen most commonly in large and giant breed dogs. This is a life-threatening situation that occurs when the stomach fills with gas and/or food, expands, and then rotates, trapping gas inside the stomach. As pressure in the stomach builds up and cannot be released, the stomach can twist within the abdomen. Once this occurs, the blood supply to the stomach and spleen is compromised and the tissue becomes necrotic (dies) leading to bacteria being released into the abdomen. Expansion of the stomach also has a serious effect on the heart and lungs, causing difficulty breathing and abnormal heart rhythm. Most dogs will go into shock soon after the signs of GDV are seen. Death can occur within a matter of hours (or less). To prevent bloat some environmental changes that have been recommended include: feeding on a

What Are the General Symptoms of Bloat/GDV in Dogs? • Distended abdomen • Unsuccessful attempts to belch or vomit • Retching without producing anything • Weakness • Excessive salivation • Shortness of breath • Cold body temperature • Pale gums • Rapid heartbeat • Collapse 8

raised platform, feeding more frequently with smaller portion sizes, and withholding exercise for several hours after eating. These methods have not been proven so bloat could still occur. The good news is veterinarians can prevent this terrible disease with a procedure called a gastropexy. A gastropexy is where the stomach is attached to the body wall to prevent the rotation of the stomach when the stomach fills with gas. The procedure can be performed by either traditional surgery or minimally invasive techniques that are being utilized in human surgery.

GDV is a terrible life-threatening disease that gives minimal warning. If you know animals that are at risk for this condition please take precautions. Doing so will have life saving consequences.

A

s we age we often wonder if someone could put us in a home or dismiss us easily. For dogs that’s reality. Many senior dogs are discarded like furniture. Get to know some of our senior dogs. These sweethearts would have been put to sleep had we not stepped in. Now they are looking for their Fur-ever homes. BULL is a 7 yr old male beagle. He is large for a beagle, but completely docile. He found himself in a high kill shelter with severe ear infections. He was to be euthanized for this. Pet’ographique

OSCAR is an 11 yr old male beagle. Also found to be in a high kill shelter facing death for ear infections. He is completely lovable. Pet’ographique

ALBERT is a 10 yr old male beagle. He was dumped in the high kill shelter when his owner died. He was to be euthanized for being morbidly obese. He is a cuddlier. Pet’ographique

SKIPPY is a 7 yr old male beagle. When his owner was tired of him, they dumped him in the backyard and stopped caring for him. He came to us scared and with a big mass on his head. It is great to see him finally coming out of his shell. Pet’ographique

We can only imagine what these guys and many others have gone through. Won’t you consider helping others like them? If you cannot handle responsibility of ownership, perhaps you would consider providing a foster home for senior dogs which are harder to place into permanent homes. Southern Nevada Beagle Rescue Foundation will take care of the cost. You need not worry about their medical bills. Call us for information at 702-493-9779 or visit our website at www.southernnevadabeaglerescue.com and fill out a foster application.

We cannot save all of them but each of us can help save one. Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine • September/October 2012

NUTRITION FOR ALLERGY PLAGUED DOGS wy hG a r ebo By D

A

s an herbalist for animals, I see plenty of allergy related health issues in dogs.

What I’ve found is that there are very few dog foods available that target a sensitive animal. Most processed foods contain multiple protein sources. Red meat formulas often contain chicken, eggs, and/or salmon. Chicken formulas often contain salmon products and multiple poultry products. With the allergy testing we do on a daily basis, we’ve found several common ingredients that can produce ill effects. One of the most common is rice. Unbelievable as is sounds, rice is largely a culprit in candida overgrowth, excess yeast issues, itching and skin blisters. Whether it’s the hard to digest chemical makeup of the rice or the external contaminants of non organic rice is not clear. Rice is one of the most toxic

nn

coated foods in the world. It’s sprayed several times during growth and post harvest with herbicides and pesticides as well as chemical fertilizers and fungicides. One thing is clear, processed dog foods do not use organic rice in their formulas unless it’s specifically stated on the bag. We’ve also found is that if a dog has become sensitive to certain foods, salmon can exacerbate the problem. This does not mean a life sentence in most cases. When a dog becomes hyper sensitive, it’s very important to eliminate certain ingredients from the diet completely for a minimum of 6 months. Rebuilding the immune system is critical. When a dog gets to the hyper allergenic stage, the immune system is stressed and health issues are compounded daily. Herbs like Astragalus can help rebuild a stressed immune system very quickly and get a dog on the road to recovery. Adding coconut

Replacing proteins from meat with grain is just not in the dogs’ best interest. Your dog also needs a healthy dose of calcium every day. Good old fashioned bones do the trick and dogs still love them. Many of the local pet food and supply stores have very knowledgeable staff in this area. They can help people find just the right packaged food for their dogs. They are very skilled at reading allergy reports if one is available.

oil, which is an antibacterial, antifungal and antimicrobial, is a very inexpensive way to guard against virus, yeast overgrowth and parasites. Another thing to keep in mind for multiple dogs families is that all dogs are not created equal. What is great for one dog might just be making another dog quite miserable. If your dog(s) is having issues, it’s a good idea to find out where the problem lies. Sometimes the process of elimination works, sometimes not so much.

If you have a dog with serious sensitivities you might have to go the home cooked route for a while. Including fresh meats and bones, fruits and vegetables straight from the grocery store or farm is a great way to know exactly what your dog is eating.

And, nothing says “Love” like a home prepared raw or cooked meal. Deborah Gwynn

So, what should you feed? First and foremost, eliminate grains to start. If the problem clears up, great! Grains are a huge problem for many dogs. Remember, dogs are carnivores. Their main diet should be meat. Adding fruits and vegetables is also critical as these are the healthy carbohydrates in the diet.

Arbor

Ve g a s ’ unofficial

Ambassadog

In April 2011, Arbor, a stray on the streets of Las Vegas without a family or a place to call home, was impounded at the Lied Animal Shelter. At only a year old Arbor knew she still had so much life to live and was hoping someone would take notice. Wanting to adopt, her parents, Jennifer and Bryce Henderson, visited the shelter that spring day hoping to find a life long companion. They walked from kennel to kennel, engaging various dogs, when they came across a black, white chested Border Collie mix. They had the shelter staff take her out so they could interact with her, and the three instantly connected. She was spayed the following day and brought home. Arbor’s high intelligence and eagerness to learn soon became apparent, mastering basic and advanced obedience as well as learning a variety of tricks with ease. Jennifer thought it would be fun to try something a little different... painting. “With lots of positive reinforcement she took to it right away,” says Jennifer. Since then, Arbor has seen her life make a total transformation going from stray to a local celebrity. Her talents have been featured on Good Morning America, yahoo.com, abcnews.com, AOL’s pawnation.com and most of the local news stations. Through her heARTwork for Aid project Arbor sells her paintings to raise money for various animal organizations locally and across the country while raising awareness about important animal issues. She recently auctioned one of her pieces on eBay for $453.00 while educating people about the use of gas chambers as a method of euthanasia. 100% of the net proceeds were donated to an animal advocacy group in North Carolina that still operates a gas chamber at their county shelter. “It’s interesting to watch her masterpieces unfold as she holds the paintbrush in her mouth swishing, dotting and swirling the canvas,” says Jennifer. Sometimes people have even commented seeing images in her paintings. “After a live painting demo on KLAS news numerous people approached us wanting to see the dolphin painting,” says Bryce. “Sure enough, when we went back and looked, there it was.” In addition to painting, Arbor has become Vegas’ unofficial ambassadog. Through her Facebook page, “Go Vegas Dog,” she shares pictures of herself at dog friendly Las Vegas locations and events. She also enjoys creating doggie cam videos that show people what Vegas is like from a dog’s eye view. Arbor likes to keep her Facebook page fun and entertaining, but also informative about animal issues. In the near future she will be holding a contest where you can win a limo ride around Las Vegas with Arbor the Go Vegas Dog!

Arbor hopes her story will inspire others to adopt when looking for their next companion animal. 14

TIPS FOR TAKING CARE OF YOUR PET One of the most important needs that all pets have is for… LOVE & ATTENTION – The more you love them, the more they’ll love you. They love hugs, kisses, and gentle pats. You can even show your pet fish you love it by talking to it, watching it, and feeding it special treats.

Remember when you were begging for a pet of your own - you promised you would take good care of your pet. You anticipated all the fun you and your dog, cat, hamster, rabbit or bird would have. Now you have to keep your promise and take good care of your pet.

It is really important to know what pets need to be happy and healthy. Here are few of their needs: FOOD – Your pet needs to be fed at least once or twice a day. Learn all you can about their diet and feeding schedule. Also, it is important for them to have a quiet and safe place to eat. WATER – Your pet needs fresh, clean water. You should change their water twice a day. If you have a fish or turtle remember to clean the tank once a week. EXERCISE – All animals need exercise and fun things to do. Dogs need to go on walks or play fetch with you. Cats love playtime with you as well as all those cool cat toys. For more helpful tips on children and pets, visit:

The Springs Preserve…

The Real Wildlife and Nightlife of Las Vegas By Linda Fredericks

T

hree miles from the Las Vegas Strip is a unique eco-island and eco-system called the Springs Preserve. Home to more than 250 species of native wildlife living in natural and restored habitats, the Springs Preserve provides interactive science and nature exhibits, botanical gardens, hiking trails and animal shows. The indoor experiences at the Springs Preserve include exhibition galleries, on site technically advanced learning centers and interactive museum exhibits. The Springs Preserve also hosts seasonal special events including concerts, art shows and special holiday experiences. The Springs Café, operated by the Culinary Academy of Las Vegas and the Nevada State Museum provides an extensive menu of culinary delights for hungry and thirsty visitors. The Origen Museum features the Living Collections exhibit which includes many native mammals, reptiles and invertebrates. These exhibits show how desert animals adapt to survive the extreme temperatures of the Mojave and include desert tortoises, kangaroo rats, pocket gophers, and Gila monsters as well as other wildlife. Exhibits within the Natural Mojave Gallery allow visitors to get up-close and personal as well as learn how these amazing creatures have adapted to the harsh and arid climate of the Mojave. Animal feeding experiences and tours are offered every weekend. Those of us who live in the southwest know this region is home to some amazing animal habitats. The Springs Preserve offers a unique environment where animals can be seen up-close and in action through live animal shows and demonstrations presented twice daily on weekends and holidays. Across the Springs Preserve Park, one may observe ground squirrels, nine different species of lizards and insects of many types including tarantulas and the hairy scorpion. A roadrunner perhaps will zoom by, or you’ll spot a phainopepla foraging for mistletoe berries, or a bobcat may also come into focus. Desert cottontails can be viewed from a domed window beneath their habitat. You can also view a harvester ant colony in three interconnected terrariums and a grotto where Gila monsters dwell. Snowy

Upcoming Adoption Events at Tivoli Village Sept. 1st, 2nd &23rd • October 6th & 7th From 11-3pm Petsmart – W. Charleston & Hualapai • Every Sunday from 10-1pm

Bandit, a 3-year old Chihuahua, was orphaned when both of his elderly parents died. No one in the family was able to take him so he found a temporary home with us. He’s loving and sweet; he gets along great with older children and other dogs. Bandit is great company; he loves to walk and would love to join you on your walks. He would be great as an only dog if you’re looking for that special one to share your life with. He would, however, be the perfect dog to add to an existing family of dogs.

Mr. Bean

Snowy is a stunning bull terrier/dalmatian mix. She is about 1.5 years old. Snowy was born deaf but that doesn’t keep her from living life to the fullest. She has learned to communicate with humans through handsignals, body language and energy. Snowy loves other dogs and children. She enjoys walks and playtime. She is very energetic but at the same time well behaved. Snowy would be a loving, fun companion for a family or a single person with dogs.

AHOME4SPOT.COM

Mr. Bean, a small lap dog, is looking for the right person or persons to share his life. He loves to walk, ride in a car, or sit in your lap. He can be by himself or with other dogs. He is a low energy, quiet guy who rarely barks. Mr. Bean would be perfect for a retired person who likes to walk; he does beautifully on a leash. He is treadmill trained and walks 20 minutes a day on the treadmill. He rides well in a car. He is a rescue from an area local kill shelter.

And, of course, Ottis, my love who longs for a family with kids. Whenever Ottis sees a family with kids he will not budge. He longingly looks at the family and wonders if they might be his furever family. He wants to be a part of a loving family. He can be a handful because he doesn’t get out much, however, he quickly calms down. His trainer, Danny, will spend a few hours with you and show you what a great dog he is. Is your family looking for a loving dog – Ottis might be the one for you!

box which the sport is based around. The Flyball box is basically a tennis ball launching system. The sport involves teams of four dogs working in a relay on an indoor or outdoor course. The course consists of four hurdles placed 10 feet apart with a Flyball box at the end. There are two racing lanes sideby-side. The dogs race to the end of the course and pounce on the springloaded box which releases a tennis ball for the dog to catch. They then race back, jumping the hurdles again. To see this sport in action, go to: YouTube.com and type “What is Flyball?” You will be highly entertained and informed after watching a few of the videos posted. Teams are generally registered with the North American Flyball Association (NAFA), which as of June had registered 214 breeds with 24,336 dogs, or the United Flyball League International Inc. (U-Fli), which was founded as an alternative to NAFA rules and sanctions. Flyball spans not only the United States, but also has a huge audience in countries such as Australia, Canada, South America, Belgium, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, and the United Kingdom.

ack here at home, Nevada hosts at least seven teams. In fact, the Las Vegas team, Touch N Go, holds two world records for breaking into the 14-second barrier at a sanctioned competition. That’s right - these dogs fly the course in under 15 seconds! Jennifer Johnston, a member of the Fly’N Aces, another Las Vegas team, is passionate for the sport and her dogs. She began her journey with a hyperactive pup and a trainer who belonged to a Flyball team. She has been participating in this sport ever since. She feels this sport not only gives her dogs exercise, but also gives them a mental focus and purpose that can be lacking in today’s society, especially for the herding and hunting dogs. However, most breeds benefit from the sport. If you have a dog with a toy drive or a

sport drive, large or small, this sport may be just what the puppy ordered. Jennifer welcomes you to come watch the Fly’N Aces practice. Some of the other Nevada teams are Rude Dogs West, Atomic Dogs, Vegas Velocity, and RDWs West Coast Syndicate. Flyball is an exciting team sport, not only for the dogs, but for their humans. It is a great way to meet people and socialize your dog. It is also a wonderful family sport. Jennifer has seen children as young as six running their dogs. Meets are held all across the country. What a great way to spend quality time with your loved ones, dogs and humans. The next meet is October 27th & 28th at Washington County Fairgrounds in Hurricane, Utah, followed shortly by another meet here in Las Vegas. Check out the teams on their websites and become a part of this fascinating culture!

Soon, you might hear folks say, look ...

These little dogs are my “babies”! We “rescued and adopted” our 14 year old Maltese, Button, when she was 8 years old. We got Lacee, our Bishon Frise, as a puppy and she is now 9 years old.

They are both so precious and keep us laughing at their playful antics.

We know Lacee has kept Button young!

Rescue Success Story… This is Dolly Rebecca which is Dolly Parton’s birth name. She came to our home by means of a concerned third party. She is “paralyzed” in her back legs due to either a birth defect or an injury sustained shortly after birth. She also has a broken tail. We received a call from a groomer who found her in a back yard abandoned to fend for her self. The groomer could not tell the back of her from the front of her. Since being in our care she has improved “1,000+ percent”. Now that she has her wheels and can get around she has no idea that she is handicapped. Dolly Rebecca now – happy and getting lots of love. She is on her way to becoming a therapy dog. ~ Submitted by Sue & Cecil

Halloween Pet Safety Tips

TREATS: Your dog or cat may beg for some Halloween candy but remember that chocolate is harmful in any amount. Be careful about diet candies - the ingredient Xylitol is in many sugar-free treats and is a serious danger for pets. Another popular Halloween treat to avoid for pets is raisins. CANDY WRAPPERS, such as tin foil and plastic, can get stuck in your pet’s digestive track and them ill. Be careful about candles and lighted Jack-O-Lanterns. They can easily be knocked over by a swinging dog’s tail or by a curious cat. Keep your pets indoors on Halloween night. Animals are at risk for cruel treatment by Halloween pranksters.

5 Great Tips to make your home safe for a

your home your pets By Gail Mayhugh

Vision Impaired Pet Recently, my 13-year-old sheltie, Maddy, went blind quite quickly. It's been a difficult adjustment for her as well as for us. So I want to share five things I've done in my home to make it safer for her, but still keeping it attractive.

1. Soften all of the corners in

their path. I used lots of throw pillows and plants in the areas where she was getting stuck or bumping into.

2. Keep them away from

unsecure exits or areas where they can fall, like a sunken room. Instead of a plain baby gate I found a beautiful iron doggie gate from Frontage.

3. If your pet still has some

30

sight and is sleeping on the bed or sofa, you need to help them with their depth perception. There must be a contrast from where they are to the floor. I added contrast with lighting and pattern. In my bedroom, I placed rope lighting underneath the bed. It gave a soft glow and didn’t bother us at all. In my family room I have an ottoman coffee table, so I made a slipcover in a contrasting fabric from the floor. It has to be a dramatic contrast so I’d suggest a bold print. If you have a regular coffee, first I’d suggest moving it. I found she jumped farther out than before. Then add an

Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine • September/October 2012

area rug for the contrast. It doesn’t have to be a room size rug, just large enough for the front legs to sit on the rug to keep it from looking like a throw rug.

4. To help her find the back door, I

put area rugs inside and outside the door. I found they needed to be the same, but also a completely different texture from any others in the house, otherwise she got confused.

5. And this should go without saying,

but I will, do not move anything around. Even though things have been in the same place for 13 years it's hard to remember how to get there when you can't see. I tried it myself so I could see what she was experiencing and I bumped many times along the way. They need to learn how to map their area and be able to get through the house and to their bed and food by themselves.

We all have to make adjustments when our pet’s lives change. Vision impaired pets can live healthy, long lives if we just help them along the way.
