Hiking is a great way for your whole family- dog included- to enjoy time outside, get exercise, and work off excess energy! Around the Las Vegas Valley, we are lucky to have a variety of trails that lead to hidden canyons, ancient trees, and cold swimming pools. If you decide to explore the beauty the desert has to offer, first consider the skill level of your hiking group, dog included. Dogs do best on trails with shade but here in the desert that can be hard to find. Use the seasons to your advantage- in warm summer months, opt for the higher elevation of Mt. Charleston; in the cooler fall and winter months, Red Rock Canyon and Lake Mead are perfect. Other factors, such as health of your pet and trail conditions, should also be considered.

Bristlecone Trail

Fabulous fall foliage makes this a family favorite in September. Located at Mt. Charleston’s Lee Canyon, the 6 mile loop hike is moderately strenuous filled with breathtaking views and cooler temperatures. The trail begins at the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort, and winds through aspen groves and bristlecone pines. This trail is best hiked in summer and early fall. Duck Creek Trail The Duck Creek Trail at the Clark County Wetlands Park is a lovely “city” hike. Located on the east side of Las Vegas off Tropicana/ Broadbent, the Clark County Wetlands Park is a unique urban park with a variety of wildlife from herons to beavers. Dogs are restricted in the majority of the park, but not on this trail. Hiking distances can vary on the winding paths making it long or short as you like. This trail is best hiked in the fall and winter months. For more information contact the Clark County Wetlands Park at 702-455-7522. Pine Creek Trail Located off the Red Rock Canyon loop drive, this easy 2.4 round trip hike is a favorite for newbie dog and human hikers alike! The highlight for most four-legged friends is a shaded meadow area and creek located near the foundation of a historic homestead. Past the homestead more adventurous pups can continue up the canyons for a longer adventure. This trail is best hiked in the spring, fall, and winter months. Railroad Tunnels Trail This easy, flat, 4.6 mile roundtrip trail leads you through historic tunnels and has great views of Lake Mead! The tunnels were used during the construction of Hoover Dam to move materials and equipment. No longer utilized, the railroad ties and tracks have been removed providing a wide, flat hiking trail. There are 5 tunnels to hike through but the trail continues to the Hoover Dam parking lot making the optional roundtrip distance 7.4 miles. The trail is best hiked in winter. HIKING Safely with

As the weather starts to cool off, it becomes a great time of year to get outside and take your beloved companion for a hike. Great places to go around Las Vegas that allow dogs include: Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and Mount Charleston. Before you go, make sure your companion is adequately prepared in order to make the trip a success. Always use a leash and a properly fit collar/harness no matter how wellbehaved your companion may be. It’s the only way to ensure your pet stays safe from an unwanted encounter with another dog, human, or wildlife. Most parks require a leash up to 6’ in length. Always take along fresh, clean water. Just like us, dogs need to rehydrate with activity. Don’t let them drink out of ponds or streams, because such sources often contain pathogens. You may want to take along some dog food or treats depending on the length and difficulty of your trip in order to provide some extra fuel. Collapsible food and water bowls are light and handy to take along. You can even train your companion to wear a dog pack so they can carry their own supplies. 10

Poop bags are a necessary item, especially if you will be hiking in a State or National Park that allows pets (many do not). Most places provide them, but don’t rely on it. In addition to keeping the landscape looking nice for other visitors, cleaning up after your pet helps keep other dogs and humans healthy. Be prepared for the expected terrain. Any dog owner that enjoys outdoor activities with their four-legged companion will likely need booties at some point. Booties are great for protecting your pet’s paws from rough, sharp, hot, or cold terrain. Try them before you go to ensure they fit and to give your pet time to get used to wearing them. Excessive heat is an ever-present danger in the Las Vegas area. Hiking very early in the day can make a big difference. Always be on the lookout for shaded areas to take a break. On very hot days, consider using a dog vest soaked in water to help keep your pooch cool. NEVER leave your dog unattended in a vehicle – temperatures can soar to deadly levels within minutes. It’s also a good idea to have a small first aid kit to deal with minor trauma.

A few items that are sure to come in handy: triple antibiotic ointment, sterile non-stick pads, 3-4” gauze pads, elastic bandaging material, and 1” athletic tape. Flush wounds with water first and don’t apply elastic bandaging very tightly. Seek medical attention immediately in order to avoid needless suffering. When you’re done, having a towel handy to wipe down your dog really helps. It also provides an opportunity to quickly scan for fleas and ticks. These basic tips can help you and your companion stay safe and happy out on the trail.

Many humans practice yoga as a way to develop strength, increase flexibility, and improve muscle tone. People feel less stressed and more relaxed after yoga postures. The focus on breathing helps calm our minds. Plus it is good for our immune systems and overall health. Will cats and dogs who practice yoga receive the same benefits? Many yoga instructors believe that yoga can be as stress-relieving and therapeutic for pets as well as people. It also offers a unique way for people and their pets to bond. It is interesting that many yoga postures or poses were originally inspired by animals – so it seems only natural to practice yoga with your pet! Two common ones are the cat pose and the downward facing dog. One way to do pet yoga is to help your pet get into different postures or poses. According to pet yoga advocates it is about enjoying the relationship, however, rather than forcing your pet into yoga poses. Another way to enjoy yoga with your pet is to practice and invite your pet to join in. Some cats and dogs will be naturals and others will just enjoy participating in the experience with you.

v Art In The Park v On July 11th we lost our precious Rat Terrier, Schooner, to a coyote attack. As we had done every night for years, we let her into the backyard one last time before bed. Within 30 seconds we heard her agonized cries and rushed to discover she had been mauled. She survived the attack and the difficult surgery to repair her wounds, but died 24 hours later of a blood clot in the lungs. We want to warn others who have pets, or may have visitors with pets, so no one suffers the despair we feel. We’d seen coyotes in the area, but believed they were hunting rabbits in the parks nearby. We also naively believed that our 6-foot-high walls would keep our little dog safe. Coyotes are opportunists and will return if they know there’s a pet in your yard. We’ve heard that jingling tags on pet collars may attract coyotes. The size of your pet is no safeguard; we were told of a coyote bringing down a Rottweiler with a choke hold. Here are some things we learned, too late, to help protect pets from coyote attacks: KEEP PETS INDOORS FROM DUSK TO DAWN. If pets need to go outside during these hours, go with them. Even the hours right before dusk and after dawn are not safe; one man told us his dog was killed in his backyard after sunrise at 6:00 am. REMOVE FOOD SOURCES FROM YOUR YARD. Feed pets indoors, keep garbage in cans with tight lids, and remove fallen fruit from under fruit trees. Fallen seed from bird feeders may attract small animals that in turn attract coyotes. IF YOU WALK YOUR PETS AT NIGHT, KEEP THEM ON A SHORT LEASH. Coyotes naturally fear humans and should not approach, although they have been known to stalk dog walkers at night. Harass coyotes with loud noises, clapping hands, yelling, throwing rocks and waving arms to create fear. FENCES AND WALLS SHOULD BE AT LEAST 6 FEET HIGH all around to thwart jumping coyotes, but this is no guarantee. Decorative rocks, mounds, and adjoining retaining walls may help coyotes get into your yard. Consider adding extenders to the top of your wall or fence. Move objects away from walls that coyotes can use as steps. COYOTES WILL DIG; consider installing barriers 2 to 3 feet underground, or a buried wire apron to prevent tunneling under fences and gates if the ground is not paved. ou may think of Fido and Fluffy as your faithful companions, but did you know owning a pet has serious health benefits, especially for senior citizens? If you or a senior you know is looking to live a longer, healthier, and happier life, a dog or cat may be the best medicine! Adopting a dog or cat is way better than an apple a day! Medical studies show that owning a pet can help lower blood pressure and pulse rate, resulting in fewer trips to the doctor. Petting an animal helps reduce stress, and sharing your home with a furry friend can provide a sense of security and companionship. Having a dog or cat to take care of can also help seniors ease feelings of depression, isolation, and the grief of losing a loved one. Looking to get active and meet new people? Adopting a dog will provide many opportunities for long walks, trips to the dog park, and out-of-the-house activities. Plus, owning any pet often requires a routine -- feeding times, walks, litter changes, etc. -- that can be both mentally and physically stimulating. The additional exercise and movement will further add to the list of health benefits pet owners receive from their furry friends! Senior citizens aren’t the only ones who benefit from pet adoption. Adopting an older shelter pet gives the dog or cat a second chance at a happy, healthy life. What? Another Parenting Tip?

Everywhere you turn there’s parenting information and advice. Focus is often on the latest techniques to teach respect, responsibility and skills while complimenting individual parenting styles. It seems parenting, like teaching, is prone to everyone’s scrutiny and often your greatest critic is yourself. We probably all know the feeling of thinking we are the worst parent in the world when a child is ill, or injured, or bullied at school. As parents we try to keep our children safe while providing educational experiences.

A Child’s Perspective

Reminiscing about the time I had gone to the Berea Fair in Ohio as a child, convinced me that attending a county fair was going to be a memorable experience for our entire family. We had just moved from a large city to a smaller agricultural town. For the sake of hands-on education, I took our four children ranging from ages 4 to 11 to the County Fair. I can still remember the gasps as my very verbal 5 year-old pointed, half-whined, and screamed, “Mommy! Mommy, look at the baby cow! Ew, it stinks!” Speechlessly, I stood in the middle of the 4–H contestants about to have their pigs judged; yes, I did say, “pigs”. We made a lasting memory that day. Amid laughter from the crowd, I gathered my little herd, moved out of the way and discussed “baby cows”.

Hindsight

Any grandparent knows when we finally arrive at some competency of parenting, we wake up and the children are grown, gone, and on their own. In hindsight, one suggestion is to create family memories that inspire relationship. Someone once said that laughter is good medicine. This can be so true, especially when heartwarming antics of or with animals are involved. I still recall the delighted squeals of our younger children and their friend as they came through the front door one Memorial Day afternoon to discover the most charming friendly pup which my husband had just adopted. The ensuing initiation was filled with joy and laughter. This was a positive experience for all. Unfortunately, not realizing the advantages of owning a pet, we had missed the opportunity and benefit of adopting one sooner for our older children.

While not every child has the capacity to be consistent in the care of a pet and there are those children whose health simply cannot tolerate prolonged exposure to furry or feathery creatures, experiencing nature provides incredible object lessons. If adoption is not feasible, respect for animals, appreciation for the world around us, and responsible ecological outlooks can be fostered through volunteerism. Whether working with an animal shelter or rescue, helping at an organized fund raiser, or taking part in short-term fostering of abandoned creatures, young people can find purpose and contribute to society. It is in these daily activities of life that leadership is developed.

Oh, and the end of the story? The child that squawked about the “baby cow,” has fostered several animals and today, with her amazing husband, owns two rescued feline siblings. She also has “joint custody” of our dog, Tiger. Trying to instill healthy leadership skills in our children, whether through academics, fine arts, or athletics is very good. Additionally, when young hearts laugh, care, and serve, they leave a legacy.

You love your home and your pet, so it’s only natural that you want the two to work together. And while it’s important to find ways to make your dog or cat feel comfortable, there are certain aspects of home décor to take into consideration to keep peace in your home. So here are seven common home decorating mistakes pet owners make and solutions that can make your home a comfortable and stress free space for everyone, including your four-legged friends. Not using the proper pad under area rugs on hard surface. Whether or not you have an area rug under furniture, you need to use the proper pad. First, it will protect your floor and second it will reduce the chance of the area rug to go flying when you, your kids or your pets run across it. The rug can slide across a hard surface floor causing a fall and possible injury.

Mistake

Tassel trim on pillows. I love pillows edged with decorating trim, but any trim that dangles is an invitation to chew. The strings or beads can become a choking hazard. Instead get pillows with a decorative cord. Area rugs with fringe. Our pets like to play and chew, so just like pillows, be cautious with area rugs that have fringe. Dressing your bed in expensive, delicate linens. Who doesn’t like a luxurious look and feel to their bedding? But if your pets sleep with you or spend a considerable amount of time on your bed consider purchasing washable duvet covers. I know bedding can be dry cleaned, but that can become expensive if it needs to be done frequently. For one client I made duvets out of sheets. We had trouble finding something washable that also had matching sheets, so it was a perfect solution.

Mistake

Covering everything with sheets. Of course the obvious solution is to keep your pets off of the upholstery, but some of us like them to sit and cuddle with us. You’ve spent a lot of money for your upholstery and want it to last, but now you are keeping it covered with sheets. Life is short, you need to enjoy your hard earned money. Instead of sheets have slipcovers made. Yes, you’re still covering up your sofa, but at least you can now clean them and not have your home look tacky. Another solution, instead of fabric, purchase a leather or a faux leather upholstery.

Mistake

Installing high gloss and/or smooth wood floors and expecting them to always look like new. When you know your pets like to run around the house you also need to know that their nails are going to scratch any wood floor. Engineered wood is one of the hardest but it’s still wood. You decided to put in beautiful wood floor and then yell at your pets for doing what they do, run and play, which then scratches your beautiful floors. If you’re going to use wood, select one that is handscraped with a distressed finish. At least then you can use a stain stick to disguise the scratches.

Mistake

Thinking you can have a picture perfect home with pets. Putting in expensive and priceless items and then getting mad at your pets is not a way to live. The truth is, you cannot live impeccably with pets. You have to accept it and make certain concessions. Let’s face it, having pets adds work to our daily routine and life. If you’re someone who needs the picture perfect home, pets may not be for you, but we all know they are well worth it with all the love and joy they bring to our lives.

Your Breed

It’s an amazing feeling when you’ve made that final decision to open your home and your heart to a new furry family member as adopting a dog is a highly rewarding experience. But, it can also turn into a nightmare if one doesn’t do the proper research on the breed.

hile each dog has their own unique personality, it’s important to find the breed that not only matches your lifestyle but is also a match for your training experience and ability. Their activity level is also something to take into consideration. Some breeds are quite content as a couch potato watching hours of television with their families, however, for other breeds, that same scenario will drive them to the point of insanity… and they will take their owners along for the ride. The next thing to consider is the size of the breed, as large dogs – friendly or not – are more difficult to manage than a three pound dog of a similar personality. Even the friendliest of large dogs can be extremely powerful and if not trained accordingly, the result is an unhappy dog owner and an unhappy dog. While it might not appear important at first, each breed has a different type of fur, which means that some will shed and require more daily maintenance than others. This can easily add up to a few hours per week on grooming alone.

As an example, one breed for which I’ve become quite familiar is the golden retriever. This is the breed with the award-winning smile and beautiful, golden coat. It’s also a breed that requires a bit of maintenance. Not only do they need to exercise daily but as affectionate dogs, a simple pat on their head won’t suffice. They thrive on attention. In addition, many goldens don’t realize that they’ve grown up – even as they reach their senior years – and, though they are gentle giants, they fail to realize their own strength. A golden retriever can easily knock down an adult human, even if their only intent was to play. As their name suggests, they enjoy retrieving things – including items that their owners might consider off limits. In fact, those are the items that are most enticing to a golden. Lastly, it’s necessary to provide frequent grooming and still, they shed a lot. If a pristine house is in your plans, the energetic and playful golden retriever might not be the breed for you. This is only one example, but

SLEEK and SCALY PETS

hen choosing a pet, we are sometimes overwhelmed with the number of choices we are faced with. While the majority of pet owners opt for the furry, soft-coated cat or dog, there are many people that prefer a pet of the sleek and scaly variety – a reptile.

Ball Pythons can sometimes go for weeks without eating, but typically need to be fed every 7–10 days.

Typically, their food of choice is crickets, but they may also eat mealworms, waxworms, or roaches. Unlike pet snakes, Geckos should be fed live prey. They enjoy hunting for themselves.

Reptiles have fascinated humans since the caveman days. Their quickness and ability to survive in the harshest conditions has always amazed us. With their graceful, yet precise movements, they can be fascinating creatures to observe and have as a pet companion. Reptiles make great pets for many people because they take up a relatively small amount of space and their care is not too expensive or time-consuming. They are not noisy or messy and they do not need to be fed every day.

Similar to the Ball Python, the Corn Snake is also a constrictor, but tends to be more slender with a bright orange skin tone. The Corn Snake is known for being docile, hardy, attractive, and easy to care for. It can reach an adult length of 2–6 feet and also naturally feeds on rodents, as well as lizards, birds and frogs. Like the Ball Python, the food of choice for a pet Corn Snake is mice or rats. Both of these snakes will require a warm, humid environment in a glass terrarium with a good latching lid. Since their daytime temperature needs to be between 80-86 degrees, a heat lamp or a heater with a thermostat will be necessary.

If you are looking for a somewhat larger lizard, the Bearded Dragon is also relatively easy to care for. Reaching lengths of 18–24 inches, the Bearded Dragon is a sociable, expressive pet that typically enjoys interacting with its owner. Like the Geckos, the Bearded Dragon is an insect eater, but also eats fruits and vegetables. It tolerates being handled very well and can be quite active and enjoyable to watch in its terrarium. Since these lizards are substantially larger than the Geckos, they do require a much larger terrarium. A Bearded Dragon terrarium should be approximately 40 gallons, while the Gecko terrarium can be a 20 gallon tank. Both the Gecko and the Bearded Dragon will need a daytime tank temperature of about 78–88 degrees, which will require a heat source. The Bearded Dragon will also need ultra-violet light for vitamin D3 production.

So, how do you decide which reptile is best for you? With several varieties of lizards and snakes to choose from, narrowing it down to a specific reptile can be difficult. A brief review of both snakes and lizards, and their specific needs, may be helpful. A snake can be a very entertaining and interesting pet. Two of the most popular pet snakes today are the Ball Python and the Corn Snake. The Ball Python, so-named for its tendency to curl up in a ball when it is frightened, can reach lengths of 3–6 feet. The smallest of the African Pythons, the Ball Python is a constrictor that naturally feeds on rodents, birds, and small lizards. In captivity, the food of choice is typically mice or rats. Lizards come in all sizes, colors, and temperaments and are also a very intriguing pet to have. If you are new to the “world of lizards”, you may want to consider a Leopard Gecko or a Bearded Dragon. Either one of these lizards could be a good choice for a beginner. The Leopard Gecko comes in many beautiful color patterns and will reach an adult length of 7-9 inches. These lizards are known for being non-aggressive, active, cute, and fun to watch. They are
