VETERANS Veterans Day is a day set aside to honor veterans of all American wars and to thank them for their service to our country. For far too many veterans their military service created sacrifices and suffering beyond what most civilians can imagine. Discharge from active duty marks the end of one battle and the beginning of another. Our returning heroes are battling serious physical injuries. Many are also dealing with the invisible wounds of war – Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and serious depression and psychological diagnoses.
H
onoring our Veterans includes honoring all their sacrifices and experiences. It is embracing all of their wounds: the visible and the invisible wounds of war. Statistics of Veterans dealing with PTSD:
• 11-20% of Veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars (Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom) • 10% of Gulf War (Desert Storm) Veterans • 30% of Vietnam Veterans
The numbers are staggering. Each statistic represents a person with their own story of suffering and struggle yet the pain, the sense of isolation, the unmanageability of their symptoms, and the inability to adjust to civilian life are common themes in their stories. We in the pet community understand the unique bond that exists between people and animals. The public is becoming more aware of the benefits of service animals. Service dogs are being used very effectively with people who struggle with the symptoms associated with PTSD and TBI. Two local veterans, Gary and Michelle, shared their stories with us:

When I was discharged, I was told that I wouldn’t be able to walk properly, go to school, or manage my finances. It was devastating to me. I was a NCO (Non Commissioned Officer) and in military life I supervised people; in civilian life I was unable to manage my own life. I lost my family,

my career, my health and my purpose. It was very scary. As I recovered from my physical injuries I noticed that something was different about me. I realized that I wasn’t dealing with my emotional injuries. I had adverse reactions to everything. My dual diagnosis of PTSD and TBI was made three years after my discharge. Prior to that I was treated for depression and took a lot of medications. Two years after my discharge in 2006, I was driving down a road and saw a hurt Pit/Lab mix dog running. I stopped and rescued him. I was at a really low point. I felt hurt and alone yet still thought I could prevail. It wasn’t working until Jake came into my life. I rescued Jake and Jake rescued me. Now when I get triggered by something I see – an accident or something on TV, and my symptoms start: clenched jaw, improper breathing, becoming nervous, fearful, and anxious – heart pounding, Jake nudges me, jumps on top of me – breaks my attention and that for me is important. He is in tune with me; he breaks the behavior. He taught me to love and to trust. Jake gives me a mission and a purpose. I am thankful that we found each other. The transformation in both of us is amazing. When you get back home as a veteran, you get a lot of “no’s” and not a lot of hope. Your life is defined by what you can’t do. Then I got this dog and now it is “I can”. I am looking forward to life. Jake gave me hope. He is my ONE CONSTANT – Jake is
always there for me. That, for a veteran is huge.
Michelle’s Story…
I served as a petty officer and was discharged in the 90’s. At first I was adjusting well to civilian life. I was awarded custody of my nephew and was able to focus on his care. In 2001 I started graduate school and was okay because I focused on my studies. Classroom teaching was very rewarding and enjoyable. However, the many additional requests and requirements associated with teaching overwhelmed me. In 2005 after being hospitalized, I was diagnosed with PTSD and my treatment included heavy medications. Life was becoming more difficult and I was not able to be in crowded places. The only thing that made me smile was my dogs. My doctor suggested that I look into training one of my dogs to be a service dog. I enrolled Truman, my cocker spaniel, into the training program. He graduated in May.

For the first time in over a decade I am able to go see a movie; I am able to fly in an airplane – all because Truman is by my side. My passions in life are to do more, to write, and to have more fun! And because of
Truman I know I’ll be able to passionately live my life!
How can we truly honor veterans? By learning more about the difficulties they encounter. We can learn more about the invisible wounds of war (psychological disabilities such as post traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD and traumatic brain injury or TBI). We can develop sensitivity and not ask personal questions about a handler’s disability or their need for a service dog. As pet lovers we can share the stories of how service dogs for veterans can transform their lives. We can support organizations that are actively involved in the training or the funding of service dogs for veterans.
The estimated cost of training a service dog and its handler is $40,000 to $50,000 including care for the dog and staff during the training period. Training your own dog or a rescue is an affordable option making service dogs available to more people with disabilities. reading this book would be like: “Wow, what a book! I think I was crying on page 3. The collision of man and dog, and the unbreakable bond they form, made my heart leap.” This truly is a “WOW” book. I managed to get to page 4 before the tears came. It is a powerful book that moved me beyond tears and sadness to joy and hope. The author courageously shares his story as a ‘combat-scarred veteran’. He lived in an almost permanent state of hyperarousal or hypervigilance. He often experienced periods of “graying out” where he found himself thirty blocks from home and unable to remember how he got there. Until Tuesday - Tuesday transformed his life: “He’s my cane. He’s my balance. He’s my alarm clock, my medicine schedule, my life coach and emotional monitor. He’s my companion. My friend. My ballast. My hope.” The emotional depth of the sharing about his experiences dealing with the physical and psychological wounds of war offers readers a unique opportunity to acquire a deeper understanding of the difficulties veterans encounter. Reading this was an investment of time and emotional energy that was worth every minute and every tear.

Backyard Safe

Whether that bundle of fur you brought home is your first dog or your tenth, you are in love and want your dog to be safe and sound. While you know the basics and have picked out food, toys, treats and a dog door, dog proofing your yard may be more complicated than you think. There are dogs that hold seances when you are not around and channel Houdini. There are dogs that must eat anything that smells intriguing. There are dogs that have a nose for trouble, and they find it all the time. Below are few things to consider before letting your dog out into the yard.
FENCING
PLANTS
Keep your fence or retaining wall maintained. Periodically, check for damage and the ground for any digging. Keep all items away from the fence. Dogs who have access to the yard all day can figure out how to jump onto items and then over the fence. Ideally, you should have two fences for your dog. One to keep other dogs, children and intruders away from your dog and another fence that keeps your dog tucked safely behind the first fence. A double fence is also better for dogs that have access to the yard through doggie doors.
Many plants are toxic to dogs. Here are just a few of the more popular plants that you should avoid: oleander, azalea, begonia, rhododendron, aloe, ivy, tomatoes, eucalyptus, and onion. Any type of mushroom should be removed from your lawn. Some mushroom species can cause liver failure.
Lock gates to the yard you use for your dog. If you are uncomfortable with locks, put a spring on the gate so it cannot be left open. You may want to secure the area where your meters are so if a worker leaves the gate open, your dog is secure away from that area. Monitor what happens in your yard. The safest practice is to never leave your dog unsupervised while outside your, even in a fenced-in yard.
LAWN There are many hazards when you have a grass lawn. Pet paws are often irritated by lawn and garden products. The chemicals are also ingested when your dog licks his paws and fur after being outdoors. If you must treat your yard with harmful chemicals, fence off the treated area and do not apply on breezy or windy days. Wait until the treatments have dried completely before allowing access. Try to keep your dog from ingesting a lot of grass; there is always the chance of chemicals. Licorice and cocoa bean mulch, while beautiful, are very appealing to dogs and can be very damaging when ingested.
Ant, roach, and other bait traps can be deadly. Lawn ornaments can be a choking hazard. Outdoor hoses may transfer toxic substances so it’s best to fill your dog’s water bowl using the inside faucets.
POOL Be sure your dog knows how to swim and how to exit the pool. Avoid leaving your dog unsupervised when he can get to the pool. Dogs can and do drown.
MISCELLANEOUS TIPS For basic safety, do not leave garden tools out. Dogs can step on that rake or hoe, and get tetanus from dirty scrapes. Secure your garbage can, compost and fertilizers. Sit on the ground and look from your dog’s perspective. See if there are any hazards, such as protruding nails, pointy branches or thorny bushes that can damage eyes and noses.
Perhaps most importantly, please make sure if your loved one spends any time outside that they are wearing a collar and have current ID with your phone number. A better idea is to microchip your dog and keep the registration current. You went through all this effort to make your backyard safe, let’s make sure he can be reunited with you if he does escape. M
y dogs, Pepper and Harley, have been part of my family for the last 10 years and the most important thing to me is keeping them healthy and happy. Pet owners play a crucial role in ensuring that their pets have a healthy, active life and one vital way of maintaining them in optimal shape is having regular Wellness Examinations. A Wellness Examination is also known as a ‘check-up’ or ‘preventative examination’ and is performed by your veterinarian. Wellness examinations are necessary at different times in your pet’s life. Very young puppies and kittens should receive a wellness examination every month, during their vaccination appointments.
Adult dogs and cats should have wellness examinations once a year and senior pets should have them every six months. The reason for this schedule has to do with the potential likelihood of disease depending on the age of the pet; younger and older pets generally being at higher risk of contracting disease or becoming ill. The goal of a wellness examination is to provide a valuable baseline of what is ‘normal’ for your pet at a given age and therefore help identify problems early on, before they become serious. Serious illnesses are much more difficult to treat, involve more testing, more treatments, and more medication and may end up costing considerably more than the preventative measures. During a routine wellness examination visit your veterinarian will ask you a number of questions to gather information on how your pet is doing at home; these include questions relating to eating, drinking, urinating and defecating habits, as well as activity, overall attitude, travel history etc. As an owner you know your pet’s normal behavior the best and sometimes even subtle changes may be important, so don’t hesitate to bring them up during your visit.

The Wellness examination consists of a full body evaluation that will include all body systems. Your veterinarian will listen to the heart and lungs taking note of heart Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine • November/December 2013
rhythm and lung sounds. Your veterinarian will also pay close attention to your pet’s eyes, nose, ears, teeth, skin, hair coat, temperature, weight, ability to walk and move normally, to name a few. A wellness examination may also include screening tests which provide information on blood values and organ function; this can help detect disease even before your pet shows any signs of illness. Your veterinarian will then make recommendations on preventative measures to keep your pet healthy; these may include vaccinations, fecal testing, prophylactic dental cleaning etc. Wellness examinations are also a great opportunity for you to bring up questions or concerns you may have related to nutrition, behavior, oral health, and other important aspects of your pet’s health. Some clinics offer Wellness Plans or Packages that are paid on a yearly basis and include routine physical exams, vaccinations, radiographs and even dental prophylactics depending on the level of plan desired. A Wellness examination is very important. Call your veterinarian today and find out what examination schedule best fits your pet’s age and current health status.

Explore the Great Outdoors with your Pup
NOW ARBOR at WILLOW BEACH
that the dog days of summer are over, it is the perfect time to explore the great outdoors with your pup. Within an hour, in just about any direction, there are lots of lakes, rivers, mountains, and canyons your dog will love.
To the southeast, on the Arizona side of the Colorado River, I have made many trips to a local hideaway called Willow Beach. It is here where I first learned to swim, encouraged by some Mallard ducks that were taunting me from the river’s edge. There are beach spots, picnic tables, fishing, a general store, overnight camping and even motorboat rentals that are dog friendly. It’s about 50 miles from downtown Las Vegas, just head towards Boulder City, once you cross into Arizona travel 13 miles South on Hwy 93 ‘til you see the small green sign for Willow Beach. Bet you didn’t know dogs could give directions! Even closer to home is Red Rock Canyon just outside of Summerlin. Red Rock has numerous hiking trails ranging from leisurely strolls to uphill cliff climbing. To access some of the trails you need to pay a fee to enter the Conservation Area, but others can be found from points right off Highway 159. One of the more popular free access areas is Calico Basin. Here you can take your leashed dog on a raised wooden boardwalk that encircles a grassy meadow watered year-round by an underground spring. Getting a picture of your pup at this locale is a must! Looking to really get out of the desert landscape? Then, head on up to Mt. Charleston where you will find cooler temperatures, snow in the winter, and lots of great hiking trails for you and your doggie. Some of the trails even feature waterfalls. After you are done hiking, make sure to stop in at the restaurant at Mount Charleston Lodge where you will find dog friendly dining on their patio. If you find the desire to stay overnight, their cozy cabins also allow dogs. About an hour north of Las Vegas is The Valley of Fire State Park, which is also open to dogs. Take I-15 north for 38 miles ‘til you see the turn off. You will want to allow all day to explore the many different rock formations and hiking trails at this unique, picturesque destination. Fall and winter are great times to bring your dog as the weather is cooler and comfortable. Whatever direction you and your pup plan on heading, always let someone know where you’re going in case you get lost or hurt. Also, don’t forget to bring enough water for everyone.

ets fill our hearts and families quickly - and we want to snap memorable photos that we’ll cherish forever. However taking pictures of our furry friends is not always easy. It can be a tricky task to coax and encourage them into the perfect composition. We asked Las Vegas photographers for some tips on capturing fantastic pictures…
Try Different Perspectives It’s best to move around when photographing your pets. Try various angles, one of the angles that looks really good is getting eye level with your pet. The photo of the pet looking straight up at the camera is okay but try others by placing your pet on an elevated surface! Use Treats as a Last Resort Your noises and tricks should be the most interesting thing to animals during studio sessions. If owners give treats to their pets, the food is now more interesting than you and your noises. Use Natural Light when Possible Early morning or late afternoon when the light is softer is always best. Try to avoid the harsh noon sun. When indoors, find a room that is well lit by natural light or shoot by a window. If possible, bounce the light by tilting your flash up. Come in Close Just photograph the face. Come in close. Focus on the eyes and fill the frame with the face. Work quickly because as you get closer, your pet will undoubtedly move closer to you as well. Also, try angling your camera a bit so that the image of your pet’s face is not perfectly square to the lens. Create a Studio Picture at Home Clip a blanket up as a distraction-free backdrop and bend it at the floor toward you as a cat stage. Fill room with light to shrink the pupils and display the cat’s eye color. Hold camera at cat’s eye level. Have a helper lure the cat across the stage using a feather. Carefully Select Your Location Select a place where your pet will be comfortable and at ease. Consider the background and surroundings. You don’t want objects in the background that will distract from your pet. If shooting outdoors, shoot from an above angle and get your pet surrounded by grass instead of the people, buildings, or walls surrounding the area. Have Patience - Take Lots of Photos Digital photography is here to stay, and with that came some exciting changes! With film, patience and only the essential photos were taken. With digital, patience is still a priority, but take tons of pictures - let the shutter speed fly! Enlist a Helper When photographing high-energy dogs, it’s a good idea to have a helper if you stand a chance of getting them to settle for a portrait or to move in a certain direction. . I associate this word with so many wonderful things. Christmas, candy canes, and even....well.... breath mints. At times during the hot summer months, enjoying a peppermint candy can help take the edge off a long day, it at the least to freshens my breath. But somehow the thoughts of the cool winter months, and tranquil snowy days fills my mind. With all that said, what better essential can make my list for use around the holidays. Peppermint Essential Oil is the concentrated version of what is found in those delectable candies and mints enjoyed around the globe. One drop of this stuff, and it’s instant Christmas in July. With that kind of power... do we actually dare to use this oil on the actual holidays itself? Well I do, and here’s why. First, Peppermint Essential Oil not only embodies the scents of the holidays, but actually has therapeutic benefits as well. The scent alone can uplift the spirit, increase concentration, and clear congestion all in one swift red gloved punch from Santa himself, at least I think it was Santa, but I digress. This oil is both abundant and affordable, so it’s not difficult to obtain. And, finally , it has been reported safe for our fluffy four legged friends to be around!
So, I have an oil that screams Christmas, can help me knock out a cold, and even wake me up during the long wait for the local department store to open for black friday? Yes! And I ask now, have you given this fantastic product a try? If not, then.... well go get some! And share with your family and friends your experiences. There is a good chance you won’t have to tell them about it. They will ask you when they walk into your home smelling of a forest of candy canes, suddenly awake and alert. I will give a tip for those not familiar with essential oil use as I come to a close. This essential oil can be enjoyed both in a diffuser, or diluted with a small amount of a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil or fractionated coconut oil. For simplicity, I suggest going for the diffuser. The diffuser is going to send the oil straight into the air for that wake up feeling. Diffusers can be purchased online or at a local store, and go from very affordable to bells and whistles expensive. Be mindful that essential oils are very concentrated, so a little goes a very long way. What words come to your mind when you think of pets? Do you think of soft, furry, cuddly and cute animals? What words come to mind when you think of snakes? You probably do not think of soft, furry, cuddly or cute. Yet at least 1.1 million* people find them fascinating and choose them as pets. Perhaps you have always wanted a snake. Here are a few things to consider before getting a snake: RESPONSIBLE PET CARE – All pets require care. Though snakes are easier to care for and require less time on a daily basis than other pets, it is important to understand about environment needs and food requirements. HABITAT & ENVIRONMENT – You can use a glass aquarium that is large enough for your snake to move around. Make sure it has a secure lid because snakes can easily escape. Create a place for hiding. Snakes, like all reptiles, need heat to warm themselves so you need provide a heat lamp. Keep your snake’s habitat clean by lining the bottom with paper towels or bedding from a pet store. Cages should be changed weekly. It is important to monitor the temperature and humidity in their environment. FOOD & WATER – Always have a dish of fresh water for your snake. Most snakes eat once or twice a week. It is recommended to feed your snake pre-killed food from a pet store.

Snakes SNAKE SELECTION – The following three snakes are frequently recommended for beginners because are fairly easy to care for and are docile:
• Corn Snake can reach a length of 24 to 72 inches; they have a life span up to 23 years in captivity. • Common King Snake are medium sized snakes reaching three to six feet. Their lifespan is 10 to 15 years in captivity. • Ball Python can reach a length of three to five feet. Their lifespan is typically 20 to 30 years.

ith gift giving season rapidly approaching, some people may be considering a cute puppy or cuddly kitten as a present for someone special. Although one may have good intentions, giving someone a pet as a present is generally not a good idea. Receiving a new pet that is unexpected and unplanned for can often result in the animal ending up at an animal shelter or humane society. Sadly, animal shelters and rescue organizations receive an abundance of cats, dogs, and other small animals during the first few weeks of the new year – pets that were given to someone as a Christmas present or holiday gift. As animal-lovers know, bringing a new pet into your life means taking on a commitment. Pets require attention, time, adequate space, money...and LOTS of love. When a person is simply given a pet, they may not be ready for that commitment or have the lifestyle, time, or resources to care for it. And, in actuality, most people would prefer to choose their own pet if they are ready for one. There is something special about finding and choosing that perfect animal to share your life with. It is a very personal choice, which is vital to the start of a long, mutually rewarding life together.
So what are some gifts you can give instead of an actual pet?
THERE ARE SEVERAL GREAT ALTERNATIVES TO CONSIDER: A book about the pet your friend or family member seems to be interested in. Nice photos along with information on care, training, and exercise requirements will help them decide if this pet is the right choice for them. Including a pamphlet from a local shelter may also encourage them to choose a pet in need of a good home. Pet supplies for a pet they already have or for a pet you know they have already decided to get. Water or food bowls, leashes, collars, toys, and beds could all be wonderful presents. A photo of a shelter pet with an invitation to visit and/or volunteer for a day. Shelters always appreciate some extra help and it may allow your friend or family member the opportunity to find that special, perfect pet. More importantly, it will give them a chance to see what kind of animal they might like and give them 32

some hands-on experience in taking care of them. If they’re not ready to commit to “pet ownership”, fostering a pet for the shelter could be another option. Making a special card to creatively “gift” your idea would be a one-of-a-kind, very personal present. Make a donation of pet supplies or money to a local shelter or animal rescue in their name. Take a photo of your donated items and create a certificate or card to memorialize your gift.
By choosing an alternative present, you will be giving someone the tools to make a prepared and educated decision on owning a pet. That, in itself, is a wonderful gift.

Can you believe that the holidays are already here? Where did another year go? As you’re starting to bring out your holiday decorations, why not include your pets in the festivities as well as keeping them safe. So here are some fun holiday decorations for your pets and pet-safe decorating alternatives.

Change their bedding to a holiday theme. Make a simple knotted fleece pet bed cover. Buy a couple yards of fun fleece, cut strips and knot. If you don’t want to store it, throw it in the wash and donate it to a shelter. Believe me the dogs and cats won’t care if their new soft cozy beds have snowmen on them.
Pets can find the smells and textures of holiday decorations very interesting which can make for a dangerous time. You can still make your home beautiful for the holidays; just remember to decorate with your furry friends in mind.
My pups love pillows; you could call them Pillow Princesses; so I switch out the plain pillow cases with holiday themed ones. If you have a covered litter box make it into a Gingerbread House. Use a large cardboard box to form the house and then decorate. Change their everyday food and water bowls to ones with some holiday cheer. Don’t want to fuss with changing their bowls? How about a fun mat? I use plastic placemats. They’re easy to clean and inexpensive to replace when they need to be changed out. Along with her pillows, my Matilda loves beach blankets. She is constantly balling them up until they are just right. Then when she’s done with hers off to her sister’s bed for a re-making. A quick and easy switch out.
All these things don’t have to have a specific holiday theme or traditional colors if you want to leave them out longer. Just look for designs with pine cones, winter scenes, or snowflakes.

Consider moving some of your decorations up and out of the reach of tails and teeth. I know if you have cats this can be a bit more challenging. Although I do have a friend whose little dog seems to be able to get just about everywhere a cat can. Have you ever decorated above your kitchen cabinets? My girlfriend does it every year and it looks wonderful. What about your pot shelves? Or what I like to call, dust bunny collectors. This also makes it the perfect time to get those things down for a yearly cleaning. Decorate behind glass doors. Consider adding some holiday cheer to your china cabinet, entertainment unit, or glass kitchen cabinets. I put out a few of my Holiday Barbie’s in my entertainment unit each year. I’m a bit of a collector so it takes a couple years before I see the same ones again. Holiday plants can be toxic and because they bring new smells into the house you have to be extremely careful. Instead of real poinsettias, use artificial. Pot your own this way when you’re ready to put them away, you can stack the pots inside each other and compress the plants for easy storage.
