Many people experienced sadness and the loss of family and friends, both human and pets. Other people experienced a fantastic year and look forward to another great year. For most of us, however, the old year included a full range of experiences: sadness, happiness, loss, grief, joy, promotions, demotions, etc. As we look back we are filled with gratitude for 2016 and look forward to the New Year with hope and excitement. It is a joy to plan each issue. We spend time thinking about our readers. We all have good intentions in keeping our New Year’s resolutions, but research has found that 60% of us fall short. But maybe this year can be different if we make them with our pets. Being held responsible to someone helps give us motivation to keep those resolutions. So what resolutions or goals are you looking to make this year? Here are four to consider to make this the healthiest year yet for you and your pets.

TOXIC FREE – Over the last couple years it

has been brought to our attention the amount of harmful chemicals in the everyday products we’ve been using. If you’re not already using green products in your home, the new year may be the time to reduce your and your pet’s exposure to these harmful chemicals. Vinegar and baking soda are great cleaning alternatives and mostly likely will cost less than what you are using. Along with cleaning products, what plants are toxic to your pets, as well as children? Your current and past pets may never have gotten into things, but each one is different. This is even more important when you bring a new pet or baby home. Four of the top toxic plants are: oleander, caladium, pothos and peace lilies.

2 SAFETY IN AN EMERGENCY

– Do you have an emergency card in your wallet? Most of us no longer have land lines. So in the event of an accident, it makes it more difficult for the emergency response team to contact someone for you if you’re not able to let them know. Is your pet microchipped? Is the information updated? Over time we move, get new phone numbers and forget to update their chip and tag information. If you travel with your pet, have a tag made with the address you’ll be staying. I also have a card in my wallet that lets people know that I have a pet at home alone with emergency numbers to call. Do you have a quick first aid kit with everything in one place? What about in your car? Most of us panic when an emergency happens. It’s important to know exactly where the nearest 24 hour or overnight pet hospital is. Don’t just have the address, drive to it. All veterinarians have after hour numbers and will come in, but it may not be quick enough for the treatment your pet needs. Where is their leash? I have one by each door. What if you 6

have to get out of the house immediately and their leash is not by the door you need to exit. Will you have time to get it from the hall closet?

3 KEEPING HEALTHY

– If there’s one resolution to make this year it is dental care, especially for your pet. Maybe you’ve been meaning to be better and floss every day. Instead of having it in the medicine cabinet, put it right with your tooth brush. For pets, any veterinarian will tell you that over 70 percent of pets will have some level of periodontal disease by the age of two. Studies have linked periodontal disease in both humans and pets to systemic diseases of the kidneys and liver, heart disease, lung disease and diabetes complications. Their teeth are no different than ours and should be brushed daily. I understand we all don’t have that extra time with busy schedules. I don’t have a normal 8 to 5 job so making a weekly schedule is a challenge. I strive to brush their teeth every other day with dental chews in-between. But I fall off the wagon too. This is one of my big resolutions this year.

4 LET’S GET ACTIVE AND IN SHAPE

We all know that 90% of us have this as one of our goals for the New Year. But it’s also the first resolution that gets broken every year. This year include your pet and you just might not be part of the statistics this year. Make it fun for both of you so you don’t look at it as exercise, but play time together. Walks are great, but what about mixing it up and going on a hike, running the agility course with them or enjoying some doga (yes, dog yoga is all the rage). Even if you just run around the yard with them for a little bit, is a start for both of you.

The ancient Egyptians worshipped cats for their beauty, power and mystique. Cats were revered yet they also served another important role – rat catchers and “mousers” in Egypt’s grain storehouses. They were also welcomed in households as “mousers” and pampered pets. In fact, cats were so revered that the Egyptian city of Pelusium was conquered by the Persian army in 525 BC by using cats as shields. The Egyptians surrendered rather than killing the cats. It is believed that cats were allowed on ships due to their mouse-catching skills and were able to relocate to all parts of the world. As World War I ended, cats were accepted as pets in American homes. Though their role as pets has evolved significantly in that time their basic behaviors and needs haven’t changed. In is only in the last 50 to 60 years that indoor-only cats have become common. Indoor cats depend on us to create an environment that meets their needs. Cats are born with instincts to chase and hunt prey. Indoor cats without prey to hunt will look for ways to express this natural behavior. They sometimes use their humans as prey. For example, attacking wiggling toes under bed covers (from my experience especially in the early morning) or pouncing on unsuspecting people. They also will climb on curtains or scratch furniture. Bored cats are not happy and neither are parents of bored cats. Our feline family members need toys and interactive playtime for their health and well being. They need opportunities to hunt, pounce, and “kill” their prey safely.

By Kelly Tantalo, LVT, VTS (ECC) Every day owners are surprised to hear that their healthy dog can be a hero and save a life by being a blood donor for the Las Vegas Animal Blood Bank. It’s true! Your dog can save as many as 12 lives a year! We supply blood to the veterinary hospitals in the Las Vegas Valley as well as our own Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care locations and Las Vegas Specialty Center. The only way we are able to do this is with the help of our owners and canine companions. Every day, pets are admitted to the hospital due to trauma and many life threatening disorders where they require the blood from our donors. Your pet could be one of those heroes! Not only will your pet be saving the lives of those in need, they receive their own perks for being in the program. We are always looking for new donors but we do ask that your dog meets the following requirements to be considered. ü Between the ages of 1-6 years. ü A minimum of 50 pounds. We love our giant breeds! ü Current on vaccinations (Bordatella not required). ü Not currently on any medications with the exception of heartworm preventatives. ü Has not had a litter of puppies. ü Has not had any previous blood transfusions themselves. ü Good temperament.

If your dog meets the requirements above, call the Las Vegas Animal Blood Bank and ask for one of our friendly staff on the blood bank committee. We will set up a screening on a day and time that is convenient for you. The screening takes a short 10-15 minutes, where we will pull a small amount of blood and one of our doctors will do a full physical exam on your pet. Once your pet is accepted, we will call you when we are in need of blood. Some of our owners are available anytime for emergencies, others participate by scheduling appointments only. This is an amazing opportunity not only for you, but for your dog to become part of something that makes a difference in those lives of the sick animals that seek our veterinary care every day. Canine officers are a valuable part of the team effort to keep the city and its residents safe - searching and locating people and narcotics. By Lupe Trujillo It’s a bright and chilly morning in Henderson, Nevada, and Lieutenant Hollie Chadwick and Sergeant Chris Smith get ready to greet the workday with optimism and excitement. Their responsibilities within the Henderson Police Department (“HPD”) warrant a special attitude as they are responsible for a unit of 15, which includes nine canine officers, whose job duties consist of searching and locating people and narcotics. Scattered around Henderson - Abby, Daisy (pictured on the front cover), Ajo, Rony, Vinny, Doerak, Master, Drake, and Jano are also preparing to contribute their services to the Department. All nine HPD canine officers have been certified by the California K-9 Narcotics Association, an independent organization that acknowledges that the canine is ready for street patrol, after completion of a 480 hour training course with their human partners (aka handlers), and passing an inperson exam. Each canine officer is certified as a Patrol Dog, Narcotics Dog, or a Dual Purpose Dog, having unique training to specialize in those areas. Daisy, a Cocker Spaniel, is a Narcotics Dog. Canine officers love to work and are bred for this life assignment with a price tag of $5,000-$15,000, dependent on training received by their breeder. When Daisy jumps into her custom kennel inside a K-9 patrol vehicle, she knows that the next time her door is opened, either manually or with a wireless fob by her handler, she is on duty as one of the most advanced search and locate tools the HPD has available. The customization of the K-9 patrol vehicle costs around $15,000 and consists of equipment that allows the vehicle to 12

remain running without overheating, an infrared temperature gauge, automatic temperature control features, and a cellular enabled alarm system that will call the HPD dispatch station should one of those items malfunction. Daisy’s service is invaluable to the Department, so each handler has Dr. Randy Winn from the Black Mountain Animal Hospital on speed dial. Dr. Winn is on call 365 days a year to assist the K-9 unit, and also provides the team with regular and routine preventative care. This veterinary service continues through the canine officer’s retirement, which occurs variably dependent on breed and specialization (Narcotics, Patrol, etc). Dr. Winn has outfitted each K-9 patrol vehicle with K-9 medical kits and has given each handler training on how to triage their partners. In addition to veterinary services and food, the Department also provides kennel panels to each handler to construct a custom K-9 home at their personal residence, as Daisy goes home every night with her handler, Officer C. Landis. Upon her retirement, her last handler will be given the option to purchase her for $1. Daisy and Officer Landis have an unbreakable bond, they protect each other’s lives every time they are on duty. Daisy will go home tonight and will not play or interact with Officer Landis’ family as to not compromise her training, that day will come when she retires. Tonight she will dream about that big bust she made earlier in the day that prevented illegal drugs from circulating within our community. v

FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN An everyday use AGILITY COURSE for the Henderson Police Department’s K-9 unit. The agility course will serve a dual purpose with the City of Henderson’s Animal Shelter. The first fundraising campaign of the Friends of Henderson Police Department (“Friends of HPD”) is for an everyday use agility course for the Henderson Police Department (“HPD”)’s K-9 unit and comes at a cost of $45,000. The agility course will serve a dual purpose with the City of Henderson’s Animal Shelter as it will be located on the same premises, just north of the animal shelter building off of Galleria Street. This course will provide dogs waiting for rescue a place to play, exercise, and enjoy the outdoors. The K-9 agility course will include grass, sprinklers, and K-9 friendly flooring over the entire course. It will be enclosed with fencing and will have adequate lighting to allow for nighttime use, as well as an observation area with seating. Lastly, there will be an outdoor wash station and a permanent shade structure. K-9 agility courses are full of positive benefits for canine officers and their human partners. These courses are a healthy and safe outlet which combines cardiovascular work, communication, obedience, and coordination for canine officers and their partners. Most importantly, this course will provide HPD’s canine officers a recreational outlet while building the relationship between them and their partner.

The Friends of Henderson Police Department Foundation is a 501(c) (3) organization, whose sole purpose is to fundraise for the unbudgeted expenses of the Henderson Police Department and its officers. In addition, the Foundation works with the HPD to coordinate volunteers to assist with fundraising events and offer community awareness programs. The Friends of HPD was founded in June, 2016 and is made up of volunteers. All donations are used 100% for funding requests of the Henderson Police Department.

RATTLESNAKE AVOIDANCE Ways to keep your pets safe

t can happen in an instant. A rattlesnake bite inflicted on you or your pet can be a very serious and costly injury that deserves some habitual, precautionary measures to avoid. Living in the southwest, it is likely that you will encounter one of these venomous creatures at one time or another. Learning more about rattlesnakes and following some simple avoidance behaviors can help keep both you and your pet substantially safer. There are five snake species found in Nevada that can be dangerous to people and pets. All five are members of the Viperidae family, the pit vipers. They are the Sidewinder, Mohave, Speckled, Western Diamondback and the Great Basin rattlesnakes. These snakes all have broad triangular shaped heads and adults can range in size from 1 ½ to 4 feet long. Smaller juvenile rattlesnakes may look less threatening, but can actually be more dangerous than a full grown rattlesnake. Juveniles are fully capable of inflicting a venomous bite and can inadvertently deliver a large amount of venom because they have difficulty controlling the amount injected. Although all of these snakes are most active from March to October in Nevada, they may periodically come out of their burrows for brief periods of time in the winter months. If you enjoy exploring the outdoors with your pets, it is important to remember that rattlesnakes are exploring and trying to sustain themselves in the same environment that you are. When hiking or exploring an overgrown area with your pet, keep your dog’s leash short and make your presence known. Don’t walk quietly. Rattlesnakes are extremely sensitive to vibrations in the ground and will most likely rattle when they sense you are

near. This will at least give you a warning as to where they are and will hopefully give you time to avoid them. They will only rattle when they feel vulnerable or defensive, but they will not always give you a rattle warning if they feel they are hidden or do not detect your presence. As snakes travel in search of food and mates, they often end up along hiking trails, parks, and even on your own front porch. ALWAYS look before you open a door to go outside or let your pet out…always. Many times, rattlesnakes are found coiled up on the warm concrete right outside of a front or back door. When working in the yard, never reach in under anything that blocks your vision – under low-hanging bushes, rock crevices, or anyplace that you can’t visually see. These are all perfect places for rattlesnakes to hide out and stay cool during the heat of the summer. Unfortunately, these are all of the same places that “Fido” insists on poking his nose in for a good sniff. If you are with your pet, you can do your best to protect him from rattlesnakes. But what if you’re not with him? “Rattlesnake Avoidance Training” has been proven to be a crucial tool for dog owners. aking the decision to add a new furry addition to your family is a rewarding one and will provide you with years of happiness. Along with that happiness, however, does come a new realm of responsibility, as a pet requires almost as much dedication as having a child. The one main difference is that a pet will never be able to rely on its own resources or take care of itself. They rely on their owners to be their sole caregivers. This means they require much more than just food, water, and going outside once in a while. While some pets can easily amuse themselves and may even find enjoyment simply nestled in their favorite corner or cage, dogs need frequent attention and mental stimulation. It is important to make sure they get plenty of exercise and quality time with their humans. Failing to do so often results in an unhappy pet which can make for one unhappy owner! Exercising your pet will help curb destructive behavior that often stems from anxiety. In addition to exercise, it is important to maintain good health for your pet. While some have more health requirements than others, at the very least they should have be spayed or neutered to prevent overpopulation and also have an annual checkup and vaccinations. These checkups will help ensure that any minor illnesses won’t spiral into something serious that can’t be cured. While costly, preventative wellness checks are well worth the money. Your vet can also provide your pet with a microchip, which is an identification marker injected into your pet if they ever get lost. This chip is registered with a company, and if your pet ever gets lost, any vet will be able to scan them and find their owner. Unlike dog tags, this chip can never be removed and will be with your dog 22

for the remainder of its life. It is a great safety net should your pup ever decide to go exploring the world on its own! Also keep in mind that while it might not be necessary to have your pooch professionally groomed, it is important to bathe them every so often and have their nails clipped to prevent injury to themselves or to others. Along that same vein, especially for dogs with floppy ears, it is imperative to check their ears for mites or infection and clean them often. Ear infections can become serious if left unattended. And, of course, their teeth need to be tended to as well. For dogs with severe dental disease, your vet may suggest a professional cleaning. To maintain proper dental hygiene, most vets can supply toothpaste made just for dogs. It may take some time for your dog to get used to it, but some dogs learn to love it! Lastly, dogs need to be socialized to help avoid any aggression issues later on. If your dog already displays aggressive tendencies, it is best to get the advice and assistance of a professional trainer. This will prevent further headaches later on down the road, as you don’t want to be in the middle of a dog fight or worse, have your dog attack a human. Eyes are the windows to the soul. As cliché as this may sound, it can be very true – not

only in humans but in our four legged friends as well. Those puppy or kitten eyes can give us a lot more information than we think, much more than just asking for a treat. Here is a simple “how to” guide as to what to look for.

ooking into their eyes. I know this sounds cheesy, but you are the first line in noticing small changes that could indicate a much bigger problem is lurking below. Masses, color changes, and clarity could indicate a much more serious problem that could be caught and possibly treated by your veterinarian. Squinting can indicate a scratch on the surface of the eye – which can need immediate medical attention. Color change of the white portion of the eye or enlargement of the vessels can indicate inflammation inside the eye, or systemic illness which should always be examined by your veterinarian. Also checking your pet’s vision can sometimes be performed at home as well, using a series of tests. Menace response is a test that is performed by making a sudden movement in the direction of the eye, which should elicit a blink. This test should be done carefully and slowly, as not to injure the eye, touch the face/whiskers, or make a gust a wind which could alter the results. The cotton ball test is another test which can be performed at home where a cotton ball is dropped into the visual field to assess vision. Other vision tests are available, but should either be performed by your veterinarian or direct instruction of your veterinarian for proper interpretation and performance of these tests. Annual wellness visits. These are one the most important steps to ensuring nothing is sneaking up on us or them, and making sure their health is intact. These visits can also include early screening tests for internal diseases that can change the appearance of your pet’s eyes. During these visits a complete blood count, chemistry, urinalysis, thyroid screening, blood pressure and possibly radiographs may be recommended by your veterinarian. Even though these tests aren’t directly

associated with the eye, they can sometimes explain why the appearance of your pets eyes are changing. Once the problem has been narrowed down to the actual eye itself, your veterinarian can recommend many different tests. Common baseline tests that can be recommended by your veterinarian include fluorescein eye staining, shirmer tear testing and tonometry. Fluorescein eye staining is a valuable tool in evaluating the surface of the eye, or the cornea. This test is commonly used to check for scratches or ulcers on the surface of the eye. Shirmer tear testing is used to evaluate tear production levels, which can be very important in diagnosing many conditions – most commonly dry eye. The test involves a specialized paper strip that is placed into the eye, and the tear production is measured over the course of a minute. Tonometry testing is performed to evaluate the pressures inside the eye. This tool is exceptionally valuable, and can screen for glaucoma and inflammation inside of the eye. Tonometry is a very helpful tool, however is commonly paired with one of the above mentioned tests, or even with further diagnostics to figure out the root of the problem. Don’t forget -many other tests are available, and there are even pet ophthalmologists!

All in all, eyes can be a pretty tricky subject, however monitoring your pet can be extremely helpful to your veterinarian. Remember to NEVER put anything in your pet’s eyes unless instructed by your veterinarian.

The Secret Language of Dogs Unlocking the Canine Mind for a Happier Pet This book held my attention from beginning to end. The author, Victoria Stilwell, shares the latest on new research in canine language and behavior in simple, easy to understand language with lots of practical tips that are easy to apply in our canine relationships. It is helpful to ask yourself what type of fish you find attractive or appealing. The type and number of fish you select will help determine the size and type of aquarium you need. There are many different types of fish available and they each have specific needs and requirements. Schooling fish naturally are more comfortable in bigger groups; they also need more length for swimming space. Community fish like Tetras, Barbs, Guppies, and Rainbows normally require less space. Cichlids need lots of bottom space.

Do you hear it? SILENCE – the call of the wild; that yearning within to escape the sounds of civilization. Years ago, David Henry Thoreau wrote, “In wildness is the preservation of the world,” Even more so today, it is essential to find places where we can connect with our primal “wildness” and reconnect to the natural cycles and rhythms of nature. In Las Vegas we are fortunate to have the Clark County Wetlands Park on the east side of the Las Vegas valley along the wash. Within the 2,900-acre park is the 210 acre Nature Preserve with six miles of hiking trails and offers opportunities to experience nature in all its wildness. There are viewing areas where you can watch birds and wildlife. The area has approximately 212 species of birds such as the Cinnamon Teal Duck, American Coot, Ruddy Duck, Great Blue Heron and Green Heron and more than 70 species of mammals and reptiles including beavers, coyotes, bobcats and snakes. It features quiet areas, ponds and plants including willow, cottonwood trees and towering cattails. What about dogs? Dogs are not allowed within the Nature Preserve but they are permitted on some trails and trailheads outside the preserve, this is to protect wildlife and their habitats. Dogs are permitted in three areas: Duck Creek Trails, Sunrise Trailhead, and the Wells Trailhead. They must be on a leash and under control at all times. Dogs have been domesticated for thousands of years but may still yearn for some wildness in their lives; they could benefit from time away from traffic and the noises of normal life. Though they won’t be able to run free they will benefit from the opportunities to enjoy new sights, smells, sounds and experiences. In her book, The Secret Language of Dogs, Victoria Stilwell mentions the importance of boosting cognitive health: “Exercise not only benefits a dog physically but gets the dog into a different environment that challenges and stimulates her senses.”

A few tips to make your trip safe and enjoyable: •

Wear comfortable walking shoes. Flip-flops are not suitable for walking through the terrain.

If you visit in the summer months it is best to go early in the morning or later in the evening. Though some of the locations provide water fountains it is helpful to bring water for you and your dog.

Nominated for America’s Great Outdoors recognition in Spring 2013, the Clark County Wetlands Park is free to enter at all access points. The Park is open from dawn to dusk every day. The Nature Center is open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm every day except New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. The Wetlands Park is overseen by Clark County Parks & Recreation and a dedicated, passionate group of staff and volunteers.
