Spring in the Mojave Desert is arguably the

most enjoyable season to take your dog out on a desert hike. Often we don’t have time to squeeze in a long hike, or we just don’t know where to go. If you find yourself in this situation, we recently tested a cell phone app that we think you may enjoy. The Clark County Health District created Neon to Nature, which aims to connect residents to hundreds of miles of trails, throughout and around the Las Vegas Valley. Trails on the app include urban trails as well as trails in our wild places such as Red Rock and Lake Mead. The app lists information about the hike, pictures, length, driving directions, and a map of the trail. For those of us with four-legged friends, it also clearly states the legal requirements for hiking with dogs (i.e., is a leash required). One nice feature of the app is a search for nearby trails. The rain this fall and water will provide a host of wildflowers in the spring. As you hike, look for the first two emerging flowers of the season; Brittlebush and globemallow. Brittlebush is a medium-size rounded bush with small yellow flowers on long stalks that emerge well above the silver-gray leafy stems. The globemallow is a desert tortoise favorite food, and they time their emergence with their blooms.

et’s face it. There’s nothing we can do to stop the aging process for humans or dogs. However, there are many things we can do to make our dogs’ senior years be their ultimate golden years!

will get pleasure from a safe swim with the owner and afterwards, savor the delight in a relaxing massage. It’s like a day spa for dogs! Perfect for our fur babies who are suffering with aches and pains!

True, they’re not going to breeze through the doggy park like they used to when they were a wee little pup. Their game of fetch might not last as long. In either case, that doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy life!

Our dogs love being with us, so even for those days where they are not up to being active, sitting on the couch with us is one activity they will love. If your daily routine includes watching television or reading a book, do so with your pup right next to you. Most dogs won’t turn down a belly rub, so take that time to let your pooch indulge in one!

They may have slowed down, but dogs still need that mental stimulation. If you had once taken your dog for two-mile hikes, perhaps take them for short walks each day. If they are up to it, take them for one short walk in the morning and one in the afternoon. Not only does this give them a chance to explore, but many senior dogs tend to put on a little extra weight as well. Keeping them as active as possible will help keep that weight gain to a minimum. Of course, as dogs get older, they can suffer from arthritis, so walking might be difficult for them. To keep their bodies in motion, swimming is a fantastic activity. If you have a pool, perhaps take a few minutes out of each day to take a dip with your furry pal! Even if they aren’t the greatest swimmers, you can purchase life preservers made especially for dogs and hold your dog while they relax in the water. It is a beautiful way to spend some quality time with your pooch, and even if they had Goldie enjoying a safe swim at never swum before, Canine Bodywork and Aquatics. they might learn to enjoy the gravity-free feeling! Does your dog love toys? Buy them a few extra and give your dog a different toy every few days. Sit on the floor and play with them if that’s what they enjoy! If they had once loved chasing tennis balls, perhaps sit across from them and roll it to them. They may not want to get up and chase it like they used to, but they may like the thrill of watching the ball “escape” and get rolled back to them to easily retrieve. When bedtime comes around, if your dog doesn’t sleep in your bed, make your dog more comfortable with an orthopedic bed. If they do sleep with you but have trouble jumping up, there are fairly inexpensive pet stairs you can purchase and place directly next to the bed.

Always keep a watchful eye for drastic changes in your dog’s behavior. If it appears that they are in pain or uncomfortable, speak with your veterinarian about pain relievers and other options that can truly make a difference in your dog’s quality of life! Dog sports have come a long way since the days of playing fetch in the backyard. Thanks to the creative ideas of many pet owners and trainers, our pets are now able to enjoy a variety of entertaining activities and sports. What a great way to keep your pup mentally and physically fit! Dogs of all sizes and breeds can now participate in many organized dog sports if they are obedient and well-socialized; getting along well with both people and other dogs. If you and your dog are looking for a new and exciting outdoor activity, Disc Dog sports, Flyball, Lure Coursing, or Agility may be just what you’re looking for!

DISC DOG If your dog enjoys playing fetch at home with a ball or toy, he may be a great candidate for disc dog sports. Throwing and practicing with a disc at home will help you determine if your dog is up to the challenge of participating in an organized disc dog event. Don’t be discouraged if your dog doesn’t make spectacular mid-air catches. As long as your dog enjoys the chase and eventually brings the disc back to you, he may be a great contender. All breeds of dogs can enjoy disc dog sports, although very small or large dogs will find it more physically challenging. Typically, it is the medium-sized, athletic breeds that excel at the sport. In an organized dog disc event, a dog and handler score points by completing as many catches as possible on a field with marked scoring zones in an allotted time. Distance and accuracy are the key components in judging the performances. In Freestyle, another timed disc dog event, a dog and handler team perform a routine of tricks, throws and catches using multiple discs, usually performed to music. If your dog is at least 1 year old and in good physical shape, the challenging sport of disc dog may be an exhilarating activity that you can both enjoy. FLYBALL As an alternative, if you have a ball-crazy dog who is smart and fast, then flyball may be the perfect dog sport for you! In a flyball competition, teams of dogs race against each other, taking 10

turns jumping hurdles and retrieving a tennis ball. To get the tennis ball, each dog must pounce on a spring-loaded box that ejects a ball. After obtaining the ball, each dog must return to his team before the next dog can start the course. Flyball teams are made up of four dogs, with a handler for each dog, plus a box loader. Flyball is a great sport for all breeds of dogs. While herding breeds and retrievers tend to perform the best at flyball, smaller dogs like Chihuahuas and Bulldogs may also enjoy participating. Since flyball is a vigorous sport requiring running and jumping, it is always a good idea to have your dog checked out by a veterinarian before beginning training. For most dogs, it takes three to six months to learn the game. LURE COURSING Another entertaining sport that is perfect for dogs that love chasing EVERYTHING is lure coursing. Most dogs love the thrill of a chase. Lure coursing allows them to experience this natural behavior in a safe, controlled environment. Courses use a mechanical lure (typically a white plastic bag) attached to a movable line positioned slightly above the ground. Using a pulley system, a lure operator moves the white bag in a quick manner across a field, simulating the unpredictability of a real chase. Dogs love it! FREE! AGILITY Although virtually all dog sports are growing in popularity, perhaps the most well-known competitive dog sport is agility. In an agility competition, you and your dog work together to master an obstacle course of jumps, tunnels, and walkways in a race against the clock. Working as a team, you must instruct your dog on what to do and where to go using only voice commands and hand gestures to communicate. At first glance, an agility course resembles a children’s playground. Bright colors adorn the various obstacles, making them highly visible for both dog and owner. Most courses include a bar jump, a tire jump, open and closed tunnels, and weave poles. Your dog will be depending on you to help him achieve the fastest time with the best accuracy. Besides being an incredibly fun sport to participate in, agility training is a great way develop better communication with your dog and keep him mentally and physically challenged. Even if you don’t compete, working with your dog at an agility course can be beneficial in strengthening your communication skills and deepening your bond with your dog. Challenging his mental and physical skills with agility training can help your dog build confidence and boost his self-esteem. With so many dog sports to choose from, picking the right one can be difficult. Think about which sport would be the most enjoyable for both of you, not necessarily the one you think you would be the best at. In the long run, it really doesn’t matter if your dog can catch a disc, jump over a bar, or win a competition. Accomplishing those feats is just an added bonus. Dog sports are all about having a different, more structured play activity that you can enjoy together. The real win in a competition is to see how much your dog has improved and seeing the joy on his face while he’s playing. It’s all about the journey, not the destination

WHAT IS IT?

Feline fatty liver syndrome is one of the most common liver diseases in cats. It is most common in overweight cats that become anorexic (lose their appetite). Cats were not originally designed to process high levels of fat in their metabolism. As fat is broken down to supply nutrients for the anorectic cat, the fat is deposited so rapidly in the liver that it cannot be processed. It becomes stored in and around the liver cells resulting in liver failure. The cat usually becomes yellow (icteric or jaundiced) in the whites of their eyes and skin. By the time it is noticed it requires fast aggressive treatment and hospitalization. Without treatment it is fatal.

WHAT FACTORS CAN TRIGGER IT?

It is important to figure out why your cat stopped eating in the first place. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re lucky, the underlying cause has resolved (such as the cat was lost/starved and has now been found). It is important to keep in mind that even though lipidosis usually carries a fair prognosis, in more than 90 percent of cases there is a second condition that requires attention, one with a prognosis that might not be so fair. These conditions can include inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, cholangiohepitis, diabetes, environmental stresses (new pet in the house, moving), and cancer. It is important that your veterinarian addresses any additional factors that might have caused your cat to stop eating. Your veterinarian my recommend wellness blood work (CBC/Chem/T4), urinalysis, fecal examination to check for internal parasites, or an abdominal ultrasound to evaluate the liver and other internal organs, to name a few. 14

TREATMENT OPTIONS

This disease itself is treatable but requires that the cat receive nutritional support until their appetite returns. This is sometimes a slow process that can take up to 6-7 weeks. The cornerstone of treatment for fatty liver syndrome involves aggressive nutritional support. A high protein diet must get into the cat to reverse the metabolic starvation state. If this is done carefully, the recovery rate approaches 90 percent. Generally, by the time a cat has gotten into trouble with fatty liver syndrome, most owners have already tried tempting cats with assorted favorite foods and gotten no results. At the point where fatty liver has developed, the cat should not be given a choice about eating. Most commonly an esophageal feeding tube is placed by a veterinarian. It is easily placed with shortacting anesthesia and sewn in place, creating a feeding tube that exits the side of the neck. A bandage or padded collar is placed to hold the tube in position and keep it from catching on things. The cat can be mobile with comfort and the diet can be slurried. The tube must stay in place for at least two weeks but can stay in place for many months if necessary. The tube does not interfere with eating normally when the cat starts to recover interest in food.

PREVENTION TIPS

Many people are reluctant to place or work with feeding tubes and want to try feeding the cat at home. There is no room for tentative treatment when it comes to this disease. Keep in mind that fatty liver rarely happens for no apparent reason and in this case addressing the underlying cause is paramount.

Animal Laws Animal laws generally serve a good purpose and are passed to benefit people and pets. Many of these were written years ago to address very specific situations. In historical context most of them would make sense; some, however, just seem weird and wacky. We shared a few in our May/ June 2015 issue and thought it would be fun to share a few more with you. WHAT IS IT WITH BATHTUBS AND PETS? Donkeys in Arizona are not allowed to sleep in bathtubs. Here’s the story: The law was passed in 1924. As the story goes, a rancher who lived near Kingman, AZ had a donkey that slept in an abandoned bathtub on his property. Well, a nearby dam broke and flooded the town and surrounding areas. The flood waters took the bathtub and donkey down into a basin. It seems that the town had to spend a great deal of their resources rescuing the donkey. Apparently, they passed this law to prevent it from happening again. MORE BATHTUB LAWS: Donkeys and dogs may not sleep in bathtubs in Brooklyn, NY. Georgia also has a law prohibiting donkeys from being kept in bathtubs. In South Carolina, it’s illegal for horses to sleep in bathtubs. In Arkansas alligators aren’t allowed in the bathtub. Note: Presidents John Quincy Adams and Herbert Hoover kept alligators in a White House bathtub. A few states have unusual laws regarding how cats and dogs relate to each other. In International Falls, MN, cats are not permitted to chase dogs up telephone poles. In Berber, NC fights between cats and dogs are prohibited. GRAMMAR IS IMPORTANT - In Belvedere, CA, no dog is allowed to be in a public place without its master on a leash. Wonder if they’ve corrected it?

People get manicures and pedicures and pets with paws get pawdicures. The words come from Latin – Cure means attention or care. Man and Ped are the Latin root words for hand and foot. Manicures, pedicures and pawdicures are terms for care given to hands, feet and paws. Pawdicures are becoming quite popular as a way of pampering pets especially dogs. For cats it is more challenging since most cats do not like having their paws touched. Why do cats need paw care? One of the reasons why cats scratch is to remove or shed older layers of their nails. Indoor-only cats especially need help with this. Regular nail trimming helps remove the outer layers and prevents ingrown nails and infection. Also, when nails are too long they curl under and grow back into the paw pads which is extremely painful. Here are a few tips that I found helpful. Start slowly - it is important to spend time getting them comfortable with paw touch. This may take a few weeks. When your cat is comfortable with touch you can examine its claws. Cats have retractable claws so use gentle pressure to get it to extend its claw. Notice the darker pinkish area; do not cut clip close to this area. This is the quick and contains nerves and blood vessels. If your cat is still comfortable you can move ahead with the next step. Cradle your cat with its head facing away from your body. Gently put pressure on the paw until the claw is extended; carefully clip the nail. Hold the cat nail clipper so you’re cutting from top to bottom. If your cat becomes uncooperative just stop. Do one or two nails at a time until they become accustomed to it. Usually clipping their nails every few weeks is enough to keep their nails healthy.

FEEDING STRAY CATS? Talk to us about a no cost solution to spay and neuter these cats. There are estimated to be more than 200,000 feral and undomesticated cats in Clark County. The best and most humane way to deal with this population of cats is to trap, spay or neuter, and vaccinate them, then release them back to their original location where a caretaker will feed them. A number of people feed these cats in their area, even if they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t consider the cats as belonging to them. They will often start by feeding a stray cat that looks hungry. The Las Vegas Valley Humane Society encourages people who are feeding these cats to partner with us to have the cat spayed or neutered. This helps to control the population of homeless animals in our community. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re feeding stray cats, please consider having the LVVHS help you to trap and spay or neuter these cats. There is no cost to you.

7 TIPS TO REDUCE PET ALLERGENS IN YOUR HOME By Gail Mayhugh

When I found out that I was allergic to pet hair and dander I was devastated. I don’t have two-legged children, my pups are my kids. Since they weren’t going anywhere, I knew I’d have to make some adjustments in my home. I don’t think it’s possible to make your home allergen free with or without pets, but there are some things you can do to reduce the number of allergens in your home.

Take down those dust collector fabric window treatments. Any type of swag, ruffle, gathered, or pleated valance is bound to collect dust. We say we’re going to vacuum them monthly, but who are we kidding. If you love fabric, go for a simple straight valance or cornice. It would be better to go with straight drapery panels than a fussy valance. Get a fabric that can be easily tossed in the washer rather than one that needs to be dry cleaned. The best window treatments are hard finishes such as wood or faux wood blinds and shutters with smooth vanes. PVC vertical blinds that can be wiped down are also a good option, although not my favorite for design aesthetics. Stay away from any fabric shades; instead opt for vinyl roller shades. If you haven’t been shopping for window treatments in a while, you’ll be amazed at what is available.

If it’s time for new upholstery, stay away from any open weave fabric that will trap pet hair and dander. Faux or real leather is the best choice since it can be wiped down. I’m not a leather person so I have ultra-suede. I use a disposable rubber glove to remove the dust and pet hair; I find that it works better than the special pet hair removal tools on the market.

It goes without saying but I will say it anyway, hard flooring surfaces are the best. Vegas is such a dusty environment overall and adding pet hair and dander to the list can lead to sneezing, wheezing and itching spells. Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) is extremely popular right now; no grout joints and easy to clean. Time to de-clutter and simplify your accessories. I love having my knick-knacks around, but I limit them to behind glass, my office and my, “Me Room.” These are the places that I have my favorite things and where I need to keep up on my dusting. If you like more accessories around, consider glazed, metal or resin pieces that can be easily washed. I put mine in the sink and spray them down. I do have some faux plants (I’ve killed every live one we had) that can be easily hosed off in the yard. 20

Have some allergy-free zones where the little furry ones can’t go. I have friends who keep their upstairs bedrooms off limits. If you do let them in the bedrooms, make sure you have washable bed sets. Even if you take the bedding off every night, it still will have pet hair on it. Heck, I only take the dogs in the car to go to the vet and groomer, and there’s pet hair everywhere, and they travel in their pet carriers.

Other fabric areas to avoid are upholstered and natural woven headboards. Instead, choose a solid wood or metal surface. Look for ones without a lot of scrolling and small openings that will gather dust. Lamps shades are notorious for being dust traps, especially the pleated ones. Select ones made out of a material that can be wiped down. Light attracts the dust, so keep on top of dusting them. It’s one of those items we don’t think about when dusting. Wall tapestries are no different than having rugs on the walls except that we rarely think about cleaning them.

You may not think about artwork and allergies, but they love to collect dust. When was the last time you dusted them off? You notice when the glass is dusty, but not necessarily think about canvas pieces you have. Use larger size pieces of artwork instead of having multiple small pieces. It will make cleaning easier with less linear feet of frame moulding. When looking for framed artwork, get simpler frames versus anything too ornate.

And of course, keep your pets and their bedding clean. Brush them outside and change your clothing when you do. Otherwise, all you’ll be doing is bringing it all back inside. Pigs are gentle, kind and loving beings who can make for amazing family pets, but they have basic needs that are very specific to their nature.

Because pigs are not as common a pet as dogs are, people tend to be less informed about what to expect when bringing a pig into the home. For example, potbellied pigs typically live to be around 18 years old, weigh on average around 110 pounds, and can truly bond with their human companions. As with any pet, making a pig a companion is a long-term commitment.

Pigs are very social animals who enjoy the company of their caretakers, and other pigs. Many do well, under supervision, with other household pets such as dogs. Pigs are very playful animals who enjoy toys.

Pigs do great indoors, but also require access to a securely enclosed outdoor area with proper shelter filled with hay and blankets, along with a mud pool and dirt to root in.

Pigs do require occasional vet care. Pay attention to their hooves and make sure their eyes are kept clean. Regular grooming can remove loose hair, exfoliate dry skin, and improve circulation.

Pigs require pig feed, portioned according to their age and weight, along with fresh vegetables/some fruits, and a constant supply of fresh water along with Timothy hay. Never free feed a pig. hen Lake Las Vegas resident Mark Green asks his dogs Jett and Charlie if they want to go for a ride, he doesn’t mean a ride in the car. Jett and Charlie accompany Mark and wife Karen for regular rides in a golf cart that takes them to the golf greens near the Lake Las Vegas Sports Club. “Once we get to the course, we drive the cart back and forth and the dogs chase the golf cart,” said Mark, who takes his pups on golf cart rides often. “Jett carries his leash around with him, and if Charlie heads in the wrong direction, Jett will go round him up.” Jett, a seven-year-old German Shepherd, is savvy with directions, and if the Greens make a wrong turn on the way to the course, Jett lets them know. “If we go a different route, Jett gets upset,” said Green, who takes the dogs to Seasons Grocery to get them lunch meat following their workout. “My wife and I order coffee and then we take the dogs over by the water where they love to walk around.” The Greens inherited Jett and four-year-old Charlie, a golden doodle, from their daughter. “Jett was the inaugural dog in our home,” said Mark, who is vice president of Allied Esports International. Allied owns HyperX Esports Arena at the Luxor Hotel & Casino, among other entities. “Lake Las Vegas is a great place to have pets because there are so many places to walk to the dogs, and the restaurants at the village are so welcoming,” said Mark. The Greens have lived at SouthShore Country Club for seven years and take Jett and

Charlie to dine with them on a regular basis. The couple are partial to Luna Rossa Ristorante and Mimi’ and Coco’ Bistro, where Mark said the staff bring the dogs water and make room for them on the patio. “Every server knows them by name and comes over to greet them,” he said. “Jett usually lies under the table and watches people. Both dogs are well trained and enjoy the entertaining environment within The Village.” The environment at Lake Las Vegas is ideal for pets as the residential resort community is equipped with picturesque trails and scenic walkways that make taking the dog for a walk anything but a chore. “We have a big dog community at Lake Las Vegas, and we host a number of events and activities that cater to our furry friends,” said Andy Gil, marketing director for Lake Las Vegas. “During Lake Las Vegas Days in May we’re inviting everyone and their pets out for a pet parade and pet fair. It’s one of our most highly anticipated events of the year.” When he isn’t at home in Lake Las Vegas, Mark is hard at work delivering patrons the latest in gaming and esports entertainment on the famed Las Vegas Strip. As a volunteer you a VIP, a very important person. You’re part of the vast numbers of people who truly make a difference especially in our local pet community. Local animal welfare groups, organizations, and animal shelters/rescues need a core group of dedicated volunteers to accomplish their mission and goals. Currently it is estimated that approximately 77 million Americans engage in volunteer activities annually; they spend about 7 billion hours helping others in a variety of endeavors. Volunteerism is part of our country’s history; the early settlers survived by helping each other. They banded together to plant crops, build houses, and fight disease. Many volunteer organizations that exist today were formed in the 1800’s and 1900’s such as the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross. The ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and the American Humane were founded in the mid 1800’s. The most important reason to volunteer, of course, is to give back to the community and to help others. Yet there are numerous benefits for volunteering. It helps reduce stress, anxiety and depression; volunteering can provide a sense of fulfillment and purpose. Socially, it helps create meaningful connections with other people. Ask yourself the following questions: How much time do I realistic have to offer an organization? What are my skills, interests, and goals? What do I enjoy doing?

HERE ARE A FEW HELPFUL IDEAS TO CONSIDER:

TECHNOLOGY – Are you a techie? Rapid changes make it almost impossible for smaller nonprofits to keep up with technology. Website design is another area where volunteers are often utilized. Websites need to be constantly updated – pet events and pets available for adoption are always changing. WRITING –Is writing your passion? Pets need great adoption profiles to let people know how loveable they are. There are newsletters, ad copy, fundraising letters, grant applications. Your skills as a writer will be greatly appreciated. PHOTOGRAPHY – Love taking pictures? Do you know how to bring out the best in your subject? Do your photos capture your subject’s personality? Good pet photos on websites and social media sites make an enormous difference in finding forever homes for them. You can make this difference! Check out local shelters or rescues; review the volunteer sections of their websites or social media sites to see their needs. Attending pet adoption events or other pet events are great opportunities to meet staff or other volunteers to get acquainted on a more personal level.

The good news is that almost every talent, skill and gift can be used in meaningful ways to help others. Become a volunteer!

TRANSPORTATION NEEDS – If you have a car or van and love driving this might be for you. It is often overlooked. Shelters need drivers to transport animals to vet appointments and pet adoption events to list a few.

PET CARE – Are you a hands-on person? Consider taking shelter dogs for walks. You can offer to do other activities that help stimulate and socialize pets. Hanging out, socializing, petting and playing with shelter pets helps prepare them for their new homes. PUBLIC RELATIONS – Do you love publicity and social media. You can contact pet stores, veterinarian offices, and other places to hang up fliers to promote pet adoption events. Sharing adoption profiles on your personal social media sites really helps. Consider offering your social media skills to help a local rescue develop or manage their social media plans. 28

Everyone Needs a Little Pepper in Their Life BY RENA WINTERS

e had just lost a wonderful cat, named Lovey at age fifteen, a few weeks before my story unfolds. Our house was quiet, calm, and very lonely. Both my husband and I missed the loud vocal comments and the warm personal rubs, hugs and kisses that Lovey so generously shared with us. A friend sent an invitation to attend an opening of a new rescue place that would be primarily presenting dogs and cats. It was a storefront space converted into two sections featuring dogs and cats for adoption as well as selling healthy pet supplies. These animals had been micro chipped and given all their shots. Some of the animals had been rescued from the local kill center and others rescued from the streets. My husband and I visited the store on opening day. It was crowded with many families visiting. In the cat room I spotted a black cat with a white slash marking on her face. She was perched on the highest of the cat poles and seemed terrified of the people and the larger cats occupying the room. I reached up and petted her. She seemed to respond to the attention. So I lifted her down to take a better look. She was skin and bone. You could count every rib but she seemed docile and friendly. I really felt it was too soon to acquire another cat. So I placed her back on her high perch knowing that one of the families with children would certainly take her home 30

that day. Well two days later my friend called to say that the little cat I liked was still there and available. I shouted yes, and rushed right to the store to acquire her. My husband said, “she’s Mama’s girl” as she stayed pretty close to me the first few days but gradually took to my husband over time. I was concerned that perhaps she had been a feral cat and not use to a home environment. After a few days, I became convinced that this cat had lived in a home before and was extremely well behaved. Her name “Ms. Pepper” suits her. She is very playful, energetic and really likes high places, leaping up and down on her cat poles. She loves to play games with you with her toys, however, she is not at all interested in playing with them by herself. She wants you to participate. One month after acquiring Ms. Pepper, my husband became ill and was hospitalized, then came home with hospice care and died shortly thereafter. I was taken to tears to see Ms Peppers curl up and sleep at the foot of the hospice bed with my husband whom she did not seem to be very attracted to previously. Ms. Pepper and I have become very close over the weeks and months since. I am sure we were destined to be together. She would indeed become “Mama’s girl.”

Hi! My name is Willow. I’m a survivor of the South Korean dog meat trade. I am so excited to introduce myself to all of my fellow Las Vegans!

was rescued from a dog farm in South Korea in May of 2016 by my Grandma Nami Kim who runs a group called Save Korean Dogs. I’m a miniature poodle. I was someone’s pet dog but I got old and they turned me over to the farmer. I was destined to be used for soup stock or a medicinal tonic. Grandma wanted me safe so she asked my Mom if I could come live here. I arrived in September of 2016. When Mom picked me up I immediately knew I was going to have fun! She gave me fresh baked cookies and let me sleep in bed with her! However, she does make me wear these belly bands because going all the way out side to pee is a bit tiring! I have been spreading awareness on social media and making public appearances throughout the country to educate people on animal welfare topics - specifically the Asian dog and cat meat trade. I do this through nontraumatic and non-graphic ways and give resources to help more of my furry friends find their forever homes. I also work on impacting change through global legislative efforts. When Mom goes to Asia, she takes me in foam board form so that I am still involved but don’t have to go back! I have two sisters who also came over to live with me. Delilah, my goofy big Labrador Retriever sister, has her own weekly column in the Korean newspaper called “Dear Delilah”. to reach people on this topic was unique and effective and wanted to help me grow my platform. I really like these new friends who want to help me make a “pawsitive” difference! I have started my own foundation called “Willow’s Wish” and have sponsored 34 freedom flights for my friends from South Korea, China, Vietnam and even Egypt! I was also named the mascot for a newly created Animal Rights Club at a local private school helping students advocate for change in the classroom – how cool is that?!

In South Korea, dog farming is a financial livelihood – a unionized business. It is old and is starting to lose money since the growth of activism against dog meat consumption. I am helping Mom create educational tools and solutions to help dog and cat meat farmers learn how to farm healthier things instead of my friends! Book Recommendations FROM TWO LOCAL AUTHORS Goldie! A Day in the Life of a Blind Dog by Elizabeth Parker. The book is a heartwarming story about a dog named Goldie and her journey with blindness. It wasn’t an easy journey and the book is a loving testimony and tribute to her resilience and strength. It offers reassurance that it is possible for pets to adjust to life changing health issues. “Hold on! There’s a GOOSE under your truck!” I couldn’t believe my own words as three delivery men stood in disbelief. Trying to sweet talk her did no good as the goose backed away, refused eye contact, and cowered; all signs of fear. Carefully, the four of us ushered that timid feathered guest into my garage; a logical sanctuary from coyotes seen roaming the night before. In that moment I wished I knew some Goose Lingo! In comparison, communicating seemed easier with our three wide-eyed felines who sat goose-gazing through our window. Standing there, I realized there are behaviors our pets, that goose, and wild animals have in common.

FORMS OF COMMUNICATION Verbal Scientists label human language verbal because of the use of creative symbols (such as alphabets and math signs) with advanced rational thought process.

Non-Verbal Experts suggest there are four categories of animal non-verbal communication:

1. VISUAL: Shape and color; and special effects like glowing lightening bugs 2. AUDIBLE: Barks, growls, hisses, whines, purrs, rattles 3. CHEMICAL: Scents of those who mark territory or protect themselves like skunks 4. TACTILE (TOUCH): Used to show affection, to dominate, or to comfort Within these categories can be found types of behaviors ranging from passive to assertive to aggressive.

can coax humans to provide breakfast at o’dark early morning. Has your Tabby meowed and purred nearly simultaneously? This tactic suggests, “I’m so faint, take immediate affectionate action.” Did you know cats rarely meow to each other? Those sounds seem reserved for communication with humans. When your cat or dog gives you the “I’m longing routine”, notice the body lingo! Tilting heads with big eyes following you is similar to a human toddler reaching up with hands in a grasping motion. These distress calls, like the human version, “Maaama,” simply means “I WANT!” The question your dog is asking is, “Will you give me what I want?” Of course, cats don’t ask, they assume you will.

After a few phone calls and some careful pampering, my new friend, Gooslina, went home. Thanks to the NLV police animal control officers, my afternoon visitor was calm, warm, and given a comfy ride to receive medical attention and be released back to its appropriate habitat. Kudos to those kind-hearted officers! And, thanks, of course to Gooslina for inspiring in this article!

or centuries horses have freely roamed across the USA, receiving the name “Mustang”, which originated from the Spanish word “mostrenco” meaning “Ownerless” or “Wild.” In the 1800’s there were over 2 million mustangs in our country. In 1971 congress passed the Wild Free Roaming Horse and Burro Act requiring the protection, management and control of wild free roaming horses and burros on public lands because they considered them “living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West”. The wild mustangs of today are an equine melting pot with many different characteristics. They descended from horses brought here by Spanish explorers, horses ridden by the U.S. cavalry, horses domesticated by Native Americans, and horses of our early pioneers. Generations of natural selection have created animals that are resilient, toughfooted, intelligent, and strong; they have an independent spirit. Having the benefit of life within a functional natural social unit, they are well socialized and savvy. The herd size can double within 4 years and this has led to overpopulation across the Western plains. Currently, there are approximately 82,000 wild horses and burros roaming the range land of 10 western states and approximately 46,000 currently in short term holding facilities waiting for adoption. Adopting a mustang or burro is rewarding and can be done for only $125. Funny Farm Mustangs (FFM) is a local non-profit organization that gentles mustangs and burros for adoption. FFM is a part of the Mustang Heritage Foundation TIP program. This program is a trainer incentive program where trainers take a completely wild horse or burro and gentle them so they can be safely handled on the ground for the new proud owner. FFM uses only least resistance training methods and practices “psychological horsemanship” while working with our country’s majestic national icons, both the mustang and burro. 46

Their newest addition is Lemon. He arrived on site after an observer found him abandoned by his band (horse family) in the local desert. He was emaciated, had cuts and an abscess in one hoof, vision problems in one eye and still had his umbilical cord still attached. When a herd is running because of danger, unfortunately a mother horse sometimes abandons her baby foal when it cannot keep up and endangers the entire herd. Under the steady care of Brian, Jill, and volunteers at FFM, Lemon is now able to socialize with the other horses and burros and amazes the humans with his inquisitive and entertaining personality.
